Nice finish work on the tank, Robert.  Not too far to the finish is it?

Here's the finished Dinah. What a great kit, a real karma cleanser after the recent Hobbycraft CF-105 and the Italeri B-26K.

As you can see in the pictures with the A6M2b, the Ki-46 was a rather small airplane, it sits next to a Tamiya G4M1 Betty in the display case and looks like it hasn't quite grown up yet.

Great finish. That really came out nice. I had no idea it was so small. Seeing it next to the zero you get the idea that this thing must have been a screamer with small airframe and two engines. Very cool.

Looks like some fine work has been taking place since my project was set aside.  Very nice builds to all!

I dove back into the Type 16, using 3 separate rattle cans.  OD green on the underside, a coat of JGSDF brown as a base, and then plenty of masking followed by JGSDF green.  I love this shade of green, I will have to bookmark it for future builds.

This has been my first experiment with a camo scheme, outside of hand brushing a couple 1/72 tanks, and I think it turned out reasonably well, all things considered.

Thanks, Ernie.  I have a pretty good selection of sets and sols, don't really know why I go with Microscale stuff first except that it won't hurt the decals if they don't like strong solutions.  If I get really mad I've got some Walthers.  The decals have settled in pretty well now.  The panel lines are very fine on this kit.

Wait, there's more!

The painting is done and weathering has begun.  The wing markings were painted on, but I used decals for the aft fuselage and tail markings.  The decals were Scalemaster Invisiclear in this kit.  I sometimes have issues with Invisiclear decals but not so far, although they haven't reacted much to Microscale red bottle after the first application.

The paint looks very good John. I find Set and Sol useless on decals. Have been using Solvaset for decades and works every time in giving the decals a painted on look. Love using the product.

I got all the glass masked and painted IJA grey on the bottom.  Used some Floquil IJA Light Grey over a mottle of Model Master Dark Sea Grey.  I hope the light grey is dark enough.  This is the first IJA airplane I've built, after many IJN birds.  The bottom is almost all masked so maybe tomorrow I can get to the top side.  I plan on using Tamiya XF-13 for that.

I'll get it out tomorrow and have a look.

I put the glass on the Dinah tonight.  Unbelievably I had to touch two of the small windows up to get them to snap in like all the rest.  Where is their quality controlBig Smile

Looking good, John. Don't beat yourself up on the instruments, the camera picks up far more than our eyes do. I find I like my work until I see it in pics, then I kinda hate it. Really does look nice.

Looks good John.  Do you have any experience with the LS 1/72 kit? Been thinking of getting that one...

Thanks, Cliff.

More progress to report on the Dinah, the major parts are together and a lot of minor parts are painted.  The engines and exhaust are Tamiya XF-56 metallic grey.  I added a brown wash to the engines but doubt it will make much difference as the cowls are pretty tight.  I intend to mess the exhaust up a bit after assembly.  I filed flats on the main wheels to give as bit of a weighted look.  The main gear struts will eventually be aluminum.  Not all that happy with the area in front of the instrument panel, just looks messy in the pictures, and the area closest to the panel should be very dull and it's not. Angry.  The parts breakdown on this kit makes assembly and painting very easy.  (Casts a frown toward the in progress Hobbycraft CF-105).

As re Shiden/Shinden I mixed 'em up a few times at first until someone, I don't remember who straightened me out!

Dodgy, the Ki-46 II had a stepped windscreen, while the Ki-46 III had a windscreen that faired smoothly into the nose.  The Ki-46 III Kai went back to the stepped windscreen and also had armament.  The Ki-46 III was a pure recon airplane without armament.  There was also a trainer version also with a stepped windscreen and a humped greenhouse.  That version is almost not pretty.

This kit is just falling together, there are not that many parts and they all just click together.  I did add some of the Eduard set but not much, but still it seems worthwhile, especially the instrument panel.  I did almost completely cover the seams in the gear wells and if I had worked a little harder putting the parts together it would have been less work.  Probably will never be seen again.  The wing to fuselage fit is particularly good.  As is my usual, I modified the propellers and engines with music wire and brass tubing so they are free spinning and removable. I've never been able to get the props to be free turning with the provided black bushings that Tamiya and Hasegawa kits have.

I used Gunze Mitsubishi interior green for the interior with a little dry brushing with aluminum for wear.

Good pick up John. I live and learn. Nice start to your entry. Is it a different model of the Dinah?

It's almost right on the roster--not sure who this 'cbaltin' guy is..

John, nice catch, all this time I thought I built  a Shinden... Surprise

jeaton01

Cliff, you have it right on the first page, I was referring to the posts while CB was building.  Just my warped sense of humor in view!

I think I'll get those seams to disappear, probably after several hours of fill and sand.  It's a challenge now.

John: I went back and looked and I put down Shiden for CB. Or at least I think so, I'm getting a little senile.

I built that kit a few years ago, it's a great kit. Not sure what to do about the seam, I think you've done the best way to fix it. I don't remember how I fixed mine or if I even did. Not sure about the different cement, I've never used it.

CB did a great job, but if he wants credit for doing a Shinden, he's going to have to build another model!  It's really confusing because the names are so similar but CB built a Shiden, which is Violet Lightning in Japanese, George to the US.  The Shinden is that late war pusher, and the Japanese called it Magnificent Lightning.  I don't think the Allies gave it a name.

I made a start on the KI-46, which is a Ki-46 III, the smooth nosed recon version.  Here's a bunch of pictures of the kit and the little I have done.  I don't plan to use much of the PE, mostly just the instrument and radio panels, and seat belts. Mr. Color Mitsubishi interior green.  The wheel wells have a seam running right down the middle, I got them as even as possible and scraped the seams, and used a dremel with a burr on the domes for the tires.  I put thin glue on to melt the join, and will probably have to add some filler.  The Tamiya glue is a different type I have not used before, it is supposed to be a resin and is rather heavy bodied.  Anyone have any experience with it?

Looks cool Ferg! Love those old vintage kits!

Brandon: Thanks! I'm thinking of just spraying the PE fret with the same grey I'm using for the ship and then cementing everything in place with Gator Grip and touching up any places where the paint chips off.

Sorry I haven't been around. My back is fine. The pollen has been giving me a headache though. That and one of the guys at work has been taking a lot of vacation/holiday time so I've been working some weird hours.
