Ok I have a few Navy figures for a dio to do. Have had them for a year now and haven't done anything with them. Going to use this GB to motivate me! Time to get started. Gotta run down later and get a poc of my LiveResin figures for this. Will post that up shortly.

Dodgy, you have an interesting sense of timing. I'd recently been thinking of taking some time to work on some 15mm Brits for wargaming, and here is a GB that is the perfect motivator! I'll check what still needs be done - it may just be a platoon or two, or it may be most of the force - before making a firm entry.

Hey Mach1, glad to to have you onboard, sounds like you're going to be busy!

ikar01, you can't possibly make more of a mess than I did when I started out. It's going to be lot's of fun, even if you have to grind your teeth when you say it!Confused

Littletimmy it's been a couple of years now since I finished a figure, so you're not alone. I'm sure I can remember how to paint them. I think, I mean I have done them before...... Haven't I???????

Incidentally, if anyone out there has any skills with creating badges for GB's I would appreciate some advice.

Hi Dodgy, I bought a set with an idea in mind, but didn't want to ruin them. This very timely GB is a great idea and this would be the place to start on them looking forward to it. I posted some figures I've already started on purely to see where I am. I'm on my phone now and the pictures won't load. I'll use my computer at work tomorrow to add them on they are the Bronco Models WW2 British/commonwealth AFV crew set and a British crewman "Tea time".

Thanks

this will be my first time working with them. They come with some special instructions on priming and prepping them but it doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary actually. The level of detail on that is unbelievable. They're actually done with those pads and 3-D imaging work like they use in the movies. So they outfit these guys and capture their whole body and then print it. It looks pretty crazy and so exact!

Great stuff there guys!!! Love those conversions Real G and I have that Dana Murphy figure around here somewhere Ikar.

I picked this up tonight- the Japanese horror movie 'Ringu' will scare the living @#@# outta ya- or at least it did me. Seems it started a whole line of creepy Japanese ghost girls with their hair in their face. Yes this is a bit of a spoiler- she climbs out of a guy's TV near the end of the film...

This figure was so weird I had to have it it when I saw it. Maybe I'll build it for the GB, haven't made up my mind yet- it should be here from the slow boat from China by then.

Samara says 'seven days'.  Scary movie.  And yes, asian children and water seem to be a scary thing culturally.  The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water... I love these movies because western horrors typically resolve in the end where these don't necesarily.   Fun  stuff.

Thanks,

Oh Gamera, you have GOT to do that figure!  And light the TV screen with eerie static.

I went to the Ring attraction in Japan when the movie was screening.  It was like a haunted house walk-thru.  The funny thing was that none of us saw the movie, so we were as clueless as a topless girl in an American slasher flick, standing in an open doorway going "Hello?  Is anyone out there?"

One of the first rooms had a phone, which started to ring.  While we were arguing over who should answer it, the girl quietly emerged from the closet behind us.  I was going to pick up the phone, answer it by cheerfully saying "Hai, moshi-moshi, Izumi desu", and then hand it to her and say "Odenwa desu yo" (telephone call).  But we just started laughing and started arguing over what to do next.  The girl didn't know what to do either, so we all just stood around.  So awkward!  Gaijin are so crue-ress!

But the walk thru was really creepy.  The morgue was especially good, because we could not tell which of the cadavers was a live actor.

Yeah, when I saw the Judge Minion on Retrokit's website, I mashed the "buy this" button immediately!  As Sophia Vergara said "Yes!  Meenions!  Oh I love those leetle yellow guys - you cannot understand anything they say."

I wanted to try the cel-shaded painting method on the Hikaru figure.  If I can pull it off, I also have Misa and Minmay to do.  I hope Plamax does Roy Fokker and at least a Zentradei soldier.

I think Japanese horror is like ice water slowly dripping in a dark cave.  American horror is basically a really loud roller coaster ride.

Gamera,

Yeah that's basically it. Plus Hollywood's obssesion with the endless remakes and now making live-action versions of animated films has bummed me out on them.

Even with American and British horror I find the whole creepy atmosphere sense of dread to be much scarier than jump-scares and gore. I watched 'Night of the Demon' last night- good solid British film from '57 that just keeps ratcheting up the sense of fear.

Overt vs covert.  Differences in culture.  Americans are known to be loud and clueless.  The Japanese will stab you in the back while smiling and exchanging pleasantries, and you would not even know it.  AND, they will stay right behind you, whispering over your shoulder, asking how much it hurts while slowly twisting the knife.  My Japanese aunt told me that.  Indifferent

My favorite scary scene from a US horror movie was the crawling steak in Poltergeist.  Oh, and when the little psychic lady reveals that the thing that has the family's daughter is none other than the devil.  My hair stood on end when she said that.

Please do the Ring "Look ma, I'm on TV!" kit.  So where did you get it?  I have friends that LOVE that kind of stuff.  So now, in addition to my aunt, my friends are scary too.  Tongue Tied

Yeah, I agree completly on movies. Except the Japanese horror/black comedy films 'The Machine Girl', 'Robo-Geisha', and 'Dead Sushi'. They felt like having my throat ripped out by a chihuahua... in a clown suit...

The 'Ringu' figure was from the Chinese site Ali Express:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3256804421140900.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.21ef1802Y72Eag

They have another figure of Sadako climbing out of the well. I picked that one up too:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3256804421167611.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.21ef1802Y72Eag

Enter 'resin figure 1/8' or 'resin figure 1/35' or whatever scale and you'll get a boatload of figures. My female cyborg came off their site. Looks like they're making 3D CAD models of lots of subjects and then 3D printing them off. Pretty slick, no inventory, just print off the figure in whatever scale when you get the order.

They're a little questionable about copyrights - they are basically swiping other people's intellectial property. But it's not like you're going to see a Sadako figure anywhere else though.  I'm not crazy about giving more money to a communist country but hey everything else we have is made there so what's giving them a little more money? Huh?

I don't do much with this site as of late, I find posting photos a bit clunky, especially when social medias are so much simpler.  I will probably play alone with this one, though!

I've got all sorts of figures in the works.  Not sure what I will do, though.  I'll keep ya posted.  Whatever it is, it definitely won't be pirated work, though...

Hello!

I'd like to join, too, although I would start to work on the actual figure in about a month or a little more... My entry would be this one:

M79 Grenade Gunner

Verlinden Productions | No. 630 | 1:16

I might also show some WIP on a fantasy figure I would work on with my daughter - this one is not quite clear yet.

Anyhow - I'm looking forward to it. Good luck with your builds and have a nice day

Once again "cross-contaminaton" goes both ways!  Gamera, I HAD to Google "Dead Sushi" - and I instantly regretted it.  What a train wreck of an illogical, incomprehensible story and bad effects!  Stick out tongue

If only the writers had wiggled in a little more plausibility.  Like some shadowy lab working on a military contract to develop a drug to keep mortally wounded soldiers from dying.  An unscupulous mega-food corporation, seeking to dominate the sushi market, steals the drug to make their sushi keep fresh for weeks.  "The stupid customers won't know that they are eating OLD sushi!  We'll crush the competition!  We'll make millions!  Mwu-ha-ha-ha-ha!"  But the company realizes too late that the drug actually zombifies organic matter and...well, cue the animated, flying sushi.  But WTH, how does egg sushi reanimate?!

Nope, not gonna watch it.

Real G, yeah it's awful but I loved it!

Then again I'm the guy that paid real money for a Blu-Ray of 'Battlefield Earth' - one of the worse abominations of cinematic trash in history. And Lord knows if they made a garage kit of John Travolta's Terl I'd buy it.....

Pawel, Haven't heard from you for a while.

When it comes to Verlinden products I usually get a bit skeptic with some of his products.  In the case of that figure I can see the colors are off in respect to the uniform and equipment.  If you want I'll take some shots of what I still have laying around here.  The uniform I have is still fairly new and the markings naturally won't match but the belt, helmet, boots, and some other things will give you an idea for color.  You will have to decide how much wear, tear, and dirt to add.  I'll try to get the shots done tomorrow and post them.  As far as the M-79 goes, take a look at some good color shots.  If I remember right the stock wasn't black or wood, but the barrel was a sort of metallic grey similar to it bring parkerized, and not very thick. I'm not sure about the weapon because it was a long time ago and the only ones who used the things were the guys in the sector morter pits.

Hi,

I think I might like to join this group build.  I just bought an 1/8 scale Astronaut model figure and think that I'd like to try and build him as some sort of Space Force Moon soldier (or I guess "Guardian" is the actual term they use Stick out tongue

Hi,

For the most part the astronaut figure is molded as two parts, front and back, for the torso, each arm, each leg, and his backback.  They all went together very easily, but will need some additional sanding and puttying along their seems.  I've taped the arms and legs to the torso (and head) for now to see how he looks.  Even though the box says the kit is 1/8 scale, I'm still a little surprised what that builds up to.  I think he ends up being about 10" (250mm) tall overall. Surprise

Hello Bob!

Good to hear from you. I'd be very glad to see your photos! Thing is, it will take a few more weeks befor I actually start building this. I will also make a separate build thread for it, like I did for that Marine captain last year - I'd love to have those photos there.

Now this won't be the first Verlinden kit I'm building, and I know they are usually riddled with problems, but with friends I have here on the forums ironing those problems out are pure fun.

Have a nice day!

Hi,

Here's my 1st cut at a base coat.

1st Cut

I am currently planning on using this shade of gray as one of the two main colors for the space suit.  I'm trying to go for something a little like this image from Wikipedia, but in shades of gray.  I'm also thinking about making the two main color areas in relatively large in area, and not adding as many of the small "chocolate chip" markings, but I i'll have to see how everything works. Stick out tongue

Desert Camo

Pat

PS.  While I've found a number of images online from the show "For All Mankind" showing astronauts holding rifles, I haven't really seen much in way of how those weapons might be carried when not in use.  Because of the large space suit backpack and limited mobility that the astronaut likely has while wearing a space suit it doesn't seem like it would be easy to try and "sling a weapon over your shoulder", but a rifle seems to big to try and attach anywhere else Surprise

In zero gravity the recoil of a rifle could really ruin your day...

Your "chocolate chip" patch made me think of last year's figure fun:

Hi,

I'm thinking something kind of similar to this, but I haven't figured out how to paint it yet.

Right now I am also trying to 3D print an M4 Rifle/Carbine to see how it would fit with the model. Smile

Hi,

I found a 3D model of an M4 Carbine on the internet and 3D printed it.  It turns out that the model that I used may not have been meant specifically for 3D printing and was kind of complex (with a hollow stock).  Overall it printed well, and looks quite detailed, though the stock did crack when I was removing the print supports.  I was able to glue it though so I hope it will be OK.

I'm thinking of maybe trying to somehow affix the gun across the astronauts chest when not in use, like shown in the 1st figure.  One main issue will probably be too make sure if doesn't intefere with any of the life support hoses though.

In the 1st picture you can see a small ring on the gun stock that the printer was able to depict and in the 2nd figure you can actually see how my printer was actually able to show the barrel opening. Smile  Overall I have been very happy with the capabilities of the printer.

PS. Please ignaore the paint job on the astronaut's face for now.  I've been experimenting and haven't gotten things quite right yet.  He kind off looks like he has space cooties or some form of "acute progressive zombie-tosis" right now Surprise

After much debating and staring at the busts in my collection (no, not that kind of bust...the resin and plastic kind...wait...moving on) I flipped a coin and opted for War Daddy:

Young Miniatures 1/10 2nd Armor Division "Hell on Wheels"

I assume for to avoid licensing fees, they couldn't actually call him War Daddy...but I certainly will.  Now I will need to watch Fury a couple more times.

G'day all. Please accept my apologies for not checking in over the last couple of weeks, but domestic duties have kept me way to busy to get to the bench and computer. Then I picked up a bad gut bug. Knocked me flat for a couple of weeks and now I'm playing 'catch up'. Not that I'm needed, Crying Real G and Gam your fascination for Japanese horror and oddities was very entertaining! I know nothing of this subject, but Gam, you have to do that girl coming out of the TV! Awesome figure.

Great to have you on board Pawel! I will add you to the roster.

PFJN2, great to have you join us too, but you were a bit quick off the mark old son, the GB isn't supposed to start until the 1st of December. However, if no one has any objections, we can get underway now.

Glamdring, I will update the roster with the details of your choice. Looking forward to your build, the Young Miniatures range are superb.

And I got this cool videotape, but I don't have a VCR any longer. Hmmm, maybe I could make a copy to send to you Real G to translate for me????  I'd need it by the end of the week though...

Thanks Dodgy!

I will say the original movie is well worth watching. The two sequels and the pre-sequel are best avoided. They have a few good scenes but not many. I found them pretty much a waste of time.

There's a Hollywood remake too though I've not seen it. I've heard it's good though.

G: Just pulling your leg a little there. I had an old VCS tape lying around so I dug it out and wrote 'SADAKO' on it. I don't think there's anything cursed on there just a twenty year old copy of the Babylon 5 TV movie 'Thirdspace' taped off TV that's probably almost unwatchable at this point.

Yeah, it was my all time favorite TV series. I need to blow the dust off my DVDs and watch them again soon.

There's supposed to be a remake coming up but the rumors have all the hallmarks that this will be a massive disastor. I hope the thing is canceled...

Hi,

I am progressing slowly, but making some progress.  Here is my attempts at the base camoflage.  I still need to add the black and white spots, and then maybe give it an overall black or gray wash to darken it a little and help pick out some of the folds, creases and seams.

I;ve also rotated his hands about 90 degrees since he will not be reaching for a ladder like in the parent kit.

Hi,

I added some small spots to the camouflage and then gave it a wash or two.  I started with a Velleho Grey Wash but it was kind of light, so I added a second coat using Testers Black Enamal Wash.  In general the Testers stuff seems to always come out a little dark on me and I often let it sit for a minute before rubbing some of it off.  If it is still too dark I will sometimes brush over it with enamal thineer and rub it down again.  Unfortunately, in a few places, the combination of the wash, thinner and rubbing ended up rubbing off my base acrylic paint, so I will have to go back over the figure again and do a few touch ups, but the figure below shows how he looks right now.

I've rectified that oversight!

Gamera, glad to know I'm not the only one with an on air VHS recording of the Babylon 5 pilot and just like everyone else, the complete series on DVD.  One of my all time favorite Sci-Fi TV series!   Apparently they remastered the series but I've only seen it available as a digital purchase. Sad  It would be interesting to see how the quality differs.

Pat, your astronaut is coming out amazing.  Like where you're taking it!

Phoenix: Cool! I hadn't even heard about the remastered series. Personally the old CGI still looks okay to me, not great but okay.

Dodgy: I'm currently working on a 23cm/9in figure of the elf maiden Deedlit from the anime 'Record of the Lodoss War'. Is it any issue if I were to post photos of her here?  The Deedlit figure I've already started on and is about 1/3rd done. I'm building her as a Christmas present for an old friend so I had to start early and keep going if I'm going to meet the deadline.

But since Ben has already started his maybe I can just post the figure as motivation for when the GB starts in earnest next week? I'm still building the Sadako figure for this GB- Deedlit would be just for the heck of it.

Here's another idea for that astronaut.  If you ever read the original book "The Planet of the Apes" lke I did back in the late 60s, at the end you find that the story is being read by a space crew in orbit of earth after they find a book drifting near their ship.  After they are done having a good laugh with it the book goes into storage while they wonder how it got into orbit in the first place since they were supposed to be the first space mission, and the story line has got to be rediculus in the first place.  Then the crew prepare to re-enter the atmosphere as they use their feet to grip holds while they put on their helmets.  Care to guess how or why they do that?

Sure were.  I read that book back in about 1968 when the first ape movie came out.  Until the very end there was no indication that they were, you just had the impression that one of our current capsules had found something that must have been forgotten by some alien ship that had visited earlier.

The book had been written by Pierre Boulle in 1963.  Planet of the Apes was our title and the British called it Monkey Planet.  I checked for this part of the info and found that the book can still be bought on ETSY and probably other places and as a audio book on Amazon.

Cool, never read the novel. I'd heard it had the apes in a modern technical civilization but in the movie building all that was deemed by the studio to be way too expensive.

Hi,

Everything is finally coming together.  I have everything glued in place except the helmet visor, and the gun (which I don't intend to glue, it kind of rests in place on the chest control unit thing).  Right now, I mostly need to;

  • Clean up that white "hose connector" behind the rifle site (I'm just waiting for the putty to dry)
  • Work on the face
  • Give some thoughts as to whether I can tint the helmet visor a little darker
  • Maybe try and accent some of the seems and edges a little more
  • And add some markings/decals.

I have recently recieved some eyball decals from eBay and am interested in seeing how they turn out.  And I also found some low vis American Flag markings that are a little small, but should be OK.  I also have some of the exisitng markings from the original kit, and I think that I can steal a "Name" for a name tag frommaybe one of my airplane kits.  Other than that I would like to try and add some rank markings and maybe some sort of Space Force marking and/or unit patch.

If I make the astronaut an officer instead of an enlisted person, the rank markings might not be two hard to do (just a solid, or hollow, bar for a Leuitenant - I think).  But a Space Force logo is probably beyond my capabilities at this time.  I may take a marking from some other kit and put it on the figures shoulder to represent some sort of made up unit patch or something though.

It's really starting to come together Pat. As for a unit marking, have you considered using an existing unit patch, as such things don't tend to change much over time, or taking something from the internet and making a decal? (Don't ask me how to do this, but I know others do it). As for the eyes, be careful of showing too much white.

The camo on the astronaut turned out really well!

I cracked the seal on War Daddy this evening, just to get whet my whistle.  I need to lop off the casting gate under his neck, clean up that connection point, then hope to prime tommorow and start painting this weekend.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback and recommendations.  I just ordered the Astronaut decals and am looking through my spares for something that looks good for a unit patch.

Thanks Dodgy and Gam.  This is a great bust, I think I will enjoy it as I go along.

Made some progress, not much.  Just a base coat for the skin and a start to the eyes.

Don't be fooled by the shadows and highlights in this picture, that is just my lighting.  I think I will be referencing this picture when I start shading...they don't show up like this in person!

I also gave Fury another watch this weekend for inspiration, unfortunately this took my attention away from the painting.  Oops

Started on my two figures so far I have only removed the casting blocks and some general cleanup. The arms and heads on both figures are just tacked on with some poster putty.
Here is the Leutnant of the 44th Flieger Bn.

This figure represents a former Lancer Regiment trooper commander who has transferred to the flying battalion. The figure is still wearing the 1910 lancer field tunic along with the regimental piping that is also on the field cap. This figure is already an ace since he was the Pour le Merite (Blue Max).

This figure represents a platoon commander of the3rd Prussian Fusilier Guards Division. The officer’s field tunic has been customized with a high collar. The figure is armed with an artillery C96 Mauser. This figure came with three head choices a soft cap, one wearing a M1916 stahlhelm or gasmask with stahlhelm.

Wow this is already a spectacular GB. The work here is inspiring. Well Dodgy, I finally made my mind up on what I'm going to build for this GB and it's going to be really spartan.

Not "spartan" as in sparsly, or severely simple and without ornament, but instead "Spartan" (noun) meaning a person from the city of Sparta. And considering one Spartan warrior would be nice, I thought three would be even better! Perhaps some of you might remember the Hoplite figure I built a couple years ago (?). I decided to purchase several figures when I bought the Greek hoplite figure and these three Spartan figures were in that group.

SPARTAN HISTORY:

Here is a short history about Sparta according to Wikipedia. Sparta was a prominent city-state in Laconia, in ancient Greece. In antiquity, the city-state was known as Lacedaemon, while the name Sparta referred to its main settlement on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. Sparta was unique in ancient Greece for its social system and constitution, which were supposedly introduced by the semi-mythical legislator Lycurgus. His laws configured the Spartan society to maximize military proficiency at all costs, focusing all social institutions on military training and physical development. Spartiate men underwent the rigorous agoge training regimen, and Spartan phalanx brigades were widely considered to be among the best in battle.

Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece. Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the leading force of the unified Greek military during the Greco-Persian Wars, in rivalry with the rising naval power of Athens. Sparta was the principal enemy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), from which it emerged victorious after the Battle of Aegospotami. Modern Sparta is now the capital of the southern Greek region of Laconia and a center for processing citrus and olives.

FIGURES and MODELING:

It all started years ago when I found an advertisement that turned out to be a web site called AliExpress.com . It is very similar to Ebay except it is based in China. While I knew nothing really of the site, its guarantee along with its use of PayPal made it appear to be safe. After checking it out through on-line sources I found it to be legitimate. The two main things I kept hearing was to check out both the product and the vendor carefully; in this case high feedback with American and European clients.

The product is made of resin and represent three 75mm or 1/24 - 1/25 Spartan warriors. They arrived in a simple 4x4 cardboard box. Inside the box was two zip-lock type bags with around 45-50 resin parts attached to sprue and resin blocks. There were no instructions, images, paint guides, just the resin in two bags. The quality of the resin was good (very little seam work or flash). There were no pin holes and it had the correct smoothness or texture where needed. Still I found it strange not to have any of the previously mentions documents.

(SIDE NOTE) After digging a little deeper and through some new friends in the PlanetFigure (modeling) forum I found that many of the figures sold in AliExpress are actually copies of legitimate figures that were sculpted, manufactured, and sold by real model companies. Many of those copied figures did not get permission to produce them and do not compensate the legitimate model manufacturer. While some of the figures are made completely by China, others are pirated copies. I looked for the origins of these figures but cannot locate them through any regular hobby sources. They may be China originals, but they may also be copies. Because of this information I no longer purchase figures through AliExpress. That is my way to better support the hobby and those legitimate people or companies in the modeling industry.

Back to the figures, after dumping the product out of the bags you could see that each Spartan was molded in several parts. These included the head, upper torso, lower torso, individual arms and legs, capes, and equipment. Initially it was not obvious which parts went to which figure. So to assist me in identifying how the parts are to be paired Jarrod and I copied images from one of the AliExpress modeling vendors sites. Here is how they are suppose to look if built my a skilled figure modeler (not me).

Image

Image

Image

Image

And here is a photo of some of the parts though much of the build has already begun. In the photo you can see the distorted spear shafts, swords, and spear tips. We will replace the spear shafts with aluminum tubing. Other items like the swords are also bent but we've been able to warm them up and bend them back to a straight position.

Image

Image

As I mentioned, the mold quality is actually pretty good, with some crisp details.

Image

Image

As Jarrod and I were cleaning the individual parts we found that each part had a unique key and slot assembly (as in the photo above). That helped a great deal in figuring which parts go to each Spartan. With that said, there was still many instances of the product bending or warping. Still with careful removing of the parts, cleaning and gentle reshaping, the parts fell together easily. Here is an example of cleaning out the hand holds designed to hold the spear.

Image

After a long afternoon me and my helper (Jarrod) were able to get the body parts assembled to the point of painting. Normally I clean and then prime my 120mm figures before my initial base coats, but I was a little worried that the numerous layers of paint might obscure many areas of fine molding in 1/25 scale. So in this case we simply washed them good with common dish soap to remove any oils or release agent used when making the molds. Next was to drill a hole into the keyed area where the head will fit to insert a holder which allows hands free painting and subsequent support away from anything else while drying. My thought is the initial base colors will also act as the primer(s).

Here is a photo of some initial painting. Our method normally starts with the darkest tone of the final color and then lightly layers. This could be darker shading of the base color such as the deep folds within the material, or a dark skin tone and later progressively lighter shades to create a forced perspective of sun and shade on the person, clothing, and equipment. Note the old file we stuck into the torso's neck to hold the figure while painting as stated.

Image

In the photo above, the dark brown looking thing is the base coat for the base of the figure. The wadded up piece is the cape that he will be wearing (see completed figures above). And here is the base coat for the cape, believe it or not that is actually flat insignia red. It's going to definitely need some dull coat to quiet down the color.

Image

We did continue adding the various base coats on one of the figures as well as some basic shading in the molded cloth-like material. I did that because it would prove difficult working on the recessed areas after adding paint to the raised portions; work from the lower recessed areas to the top raised areas. The arms were left off to make the painting of all components much easier. Check out some of the mold details here.

Image

Image

Image

That's where we are at right now. We hope to be able to show the other figures base coats along with some of the detail painting in the next update. Time now for a steady hand and small brushes (and my good helper - Jarrod).

Thanks Gamera,

And I believe I found the original manufacturer (in Spain), still working that out. I agree that you really can't argue with the quality as the fine details, poses, and general fit are wonderful. I just feel bad that I bought them when I was ignorant to the pirating issues. So to give credit where it is due...

The concept art was done by Pedro Nunez. The wonderful sculpting was by Hugo Gomez Briones and Jesus Ruiz Lopez while the original figures were painted by Ruben Martinez and Jaime de Garnica. I found them marketed in Spain by Big Child Creatives. As I said, I'm reaching out to them concerning my purchase on AliExpress (now that I know). Perhaps they can connect me to the original manufacturer (?).

Image

On with the build, The figures base coats were completed based on the photos of the originals.

SKIN: After the darker Vallejo base coat (a mix of dark tan and warm skin tone) I began bringing out lighter shades for the skin using both Vallejo figure paints and Tamiya flesh on the top coat. It was a challenge trying to made the feet look dirty while still blending them to match the rest of the skin tone. My final paint was nothing more than a very light dry brush coating of the Tamiya flesh tone to gradually bring out the skin pigment while still keeping them a little dirty.

UNIFORM: For the material of the uniform I painted it Model Master Flat Signal Red enamel than added a diluted wash to the recessed areas. Even after the wash the Model Master flat Signal Red Enamel was far to glossy. My solution was to dilute a mix of Vallejo Flat Cherry and IJN Hull Red then wash that over the Signal Red and the shading; the transition was remarkable. My last application was a mix of the Cherry Red to the raised / sun exposed portions of the uniform material.

ARMOR: The gold tone armor was nothing more than a simple application of Molotow Gold marker. I thin it has the extra super fine pigments and curing method to make it look like natural metal (not paint). The spear tips were painted with silver Molotow marker. The remaining belts, slings, straps, and ties were painted various shades of brown and dry brushed with light sand to pick out the raised details.

BASE: Originally it was dark brown. After lighter shades and progressive dark washes they were dry brushed in Vallejo Dark Earth, MM Flat Brown, Vallejo Desert Sand, and several shades of flat gray. Afterwards Jarrod and I applied some Model Railroad landscape Lychen. Here is one of the bases in the process of painting.

Image

Here is what they look like at this moment. They are fully assembled and waiting for the clear coat over the gold to fully dry. They still need the final details picked out, the skin dulled and final adjustment, etc. I'm also going to make the "V" on the shields then nick and dirty them up afterwards (along with the armor). I'm not sure If Jarrod and I will use watercolor pencils or oils for the final details.

Image

Image

Image

We are also working on some kind of display base to show all three together. I hope the next update can show the final reveal with better quality photos, we will see.

Those look like two interesting build in the works, I like the look on all the Germans and Spartans!

I have been spending far too much time massaging the Vallejo for the shadows and highlights on the face.  Considering I plan on going for the look in the early parts of the movie when his face was covered with grime...it is mostly going to be covered anyway...

Oh well, part 1 and two after after the hair was painted in.  I included the historically accurate bleached blond highlights worn by Mr Pitt.

I am going to add in eyebrows and let the head sit for a couple days to see what else it needs, but will be moving  on to the uniform now.

Time to begin the Mandalorian.

Way more parts than I expected!!!

Stickers are supplied instead of decals.  I won't be using those.

I am an aircraft builder.  This is my first figure.  With this kit it is obvious that I will need a different approach.  The kit comes molded in the various colors of the character, but in the end it would look like a GI Joe figure.  So I'll be painting.  I have assembled as many like colored subassemblies as possible.  I'll paint them and then work on final assembly.

Starting with the Beskar Armor.  I picked Alclad Chrome as the Mandalorian is quite shiny compared to say Boba Fett.

Laying down Alclad's gloss black base.  (First time using this base.  Love it!)

And finally Chroming.  Happy with the finish.

Thanks for watching!!!

An astronaut commando, Fury's Brad "War Daddy" Pitt, numerous neat 1/32 and 35 crews, fantasy, then a sci-fi bar scene, and now The Mandalorean... and lets not forget about the creepy spirit coming out of the TV, wow! Keep it coming everyone as this build string is out of this world and the subject matter is as diverse as anything I've seen in any GB.

It's been some time since our last update. Since then we've been working on the Arado AR196 Seaplane but we can only go so far until the remaining detail items arrive from overseas. Along with the three Spartan figures that we started, Jarrod and I also began working on another figure and completed it while waiting on craft items and our idea to become clearer for the Spartan figure base.

Yes, that's right, another figure too. Just to toss everyone off guard for a moment, here is a sneak peak of the other new figure's base in-progress (this is only four pieces).

Image

As shown in earlier postings, the individual Spartan figures are molded separately and placed on like bases but they do not lock together or even mate up smoothly. Trying to make them link together brings the figures unrealistically too close to one another for the poses they are in. So Jarrod and I wanted to make something that would allow the fit to be more to scale (space for each figure) yet seamless. And since we recently had a couple pine trees chopped down in the yard, we decided to honor one of them by using a slice of the trunk for the figure base.

Image

I know they would still look a little off just adding them to the wood as they are. Now comes our attempt at trying to make them appear near seamless. We started cutting a base topper from rigid 1/4 inch foam. Next we used it to cut a second layer that would lay flush to the wood base. Then, using the figure bases as patterns, we cut into the second level of foam board around where each base would be posed. Now came the fun part; Jarrod and I began cutting small pieces of foam at multiple angles to try and create a rocky terrain similar to that found on the resin figure bases. Here it is as a work in progress.

Image

Our goal will be to level the wood base, stain, and seal it. The foam stone / rocky base will be painted separately and built up with colors, small sifted rocks and stone from the property and then add some lichen for greenery (like on the resin bases). One the foam is done it will be fixed to the wood base.

We are not sure if we're going to permenantly fix the figures to the base or allow them to be removable so they can be viewed individually (time will tell). Here is where we ended today, still much more to do with the base leveling, staining, sealing, continued foam build-up, painting, detailing the figures more, etc.

Image

Till next time... And since I did not make a work-in-progress string for the new figure Jarrod and I created it as a separate posting under the "Figures" subject, check it out!

I should not have to say it, but your feedback is always encouraged.

FOAM BASE: (Still Work in Progress)

FIGURE SITTING IN BASE:
Image

I'm still not totally satisfied with it all, but at least my idea has progressed from my head to the model. I still have more detail work on the base to include watercolors and pastels (more earthy colors). Jarrod has shown real patience during the building up of the base because I know his real enjoyment is in the figures.

Last week we applied clear gloss over the shields and armor then attempted a dark enamel wash. Evidently the clear did not completely coat the metallic because the dirty wash started to bleed into the gold behind the first shield. Today we applied a second coat of gloss and will begin working on the figures again, hopefully tomorrow.

We plan on adding another coat of stain to the wood and then a couple thick clear gloss coats to seal it all in. The final touch will be felt pads beneath the wood base. Hopefully we can wrap this up in our next update....

Ben and Jarrod that base looks like it's going to work a treat and I love the figure. As far as the GB goes I'm amazed at the response and the variation in subjects. When I first proposed this GB I thought I would be lucky if 3 or 4 responded, now 25 modellers have put their name forward, several who have never attempted a figure before. I'm really blown away.

Hi,

I'm tempted to call my Space Force soldier done for now.  I have temporarily misplaced two small decals, and there may be one or two small spots where I want to touch up the paint, but those can wait.  The only other main thing that I am not sure of right now is whether I should paint or cover the face sheild in Gold or leave it as is.  I am still going back and forth on that, but plan to leave it as is for now.

PhilliePhan - That chrome really pops on the kit, great idea to go the route of painting it.

Drums - I think the base looks great.  The project is progressing nicely.

PFJN2 - Great job on the Space Force soldier!

As for mine, I am calling the torso done.

I am simplifying the unit patch and gun handle.  I fear ruining them by freehanding the little icon in the middle of the patch, and girlie picture on the handle.  He will just have to settle for an ivory handle.

Pat: That looks superb!!! Not sure about the face shield, I'd be afraid I'd screw it up with painting over a clear part.

Robert: Great job there too on the shirt and tanker's jacket!

Phan: Love that, the metallic worked out great! I had a Molotow pen but it dried out, guess I need to pick up another.

G: Whoa that's cool!

The Mandalorian is looking great, and those fantasy figures look like they are nicely molded. I'm looking forward in seeing how the come out when finished. Nice work all around!

Well, an update for the Spartan build string is over due, so.....

The foam base was enhanced with numerous model railroad terrain supplies along with sifted dirt and rock from my property. There was also a plethora of enamel and acrylic paints used to achieve the colors (more than whats shown).

Image

Image

Image

Here is how the foam base ended up. The open areas are where the figures will go. I decided that the figures would be posed together, but they can also be taken out to be seen individually.

Image

The pine wood base was stained in medium oak twice and then clear coated. And here is the completed base.

Image

I was also asked about the gold color used for the armor and shields, well here it is. Much like molotow silver, but in gold. Just a word of caution, it also reacts much like Molotow, so clear coating is a must.

Image

The other delays were figure related, specifically detail painting, finishing the multicolored textures on the capes, designing and painting up the shields, and weathering. Speaking of shields, after some research Jarrod and I chose the following Spartan Shield designs.

Image

Image

Image

And here are a couple of the templates we created and used to apply the design to the shields. A modeling friend explained to me the origins of the design. Regarding the shield, though, it's a lambda, Λ, the Greek "L". It stood for "Laconia", Sparta's country, and "Lakodaemon", an ancient name for the city itself.

Image

And above all, here is my helper who assisted in many of the steps of the build process, my son Jarrod.

Image

Finally, after numerous applications to both shields and capes we are calling these figures D-O-N-E.

SCALE: 100mm

MATERIAL: Resin

PAINTS: Tamiya, MMaster, Vallejo, LifeLike, watercolors, and pastels.

OTHER: Base and spear shafts made from scratch

Please used the first photo for the GB final... THANKS! And thanks for providing the opportunity and allowing us to participate in this GB. The huge diversity of subjects made this a very fun GB to follow. We will still be following along as there are some wonderful builds in progress that we want to follow through.

Jarrod and I are happy with the results, but as always we think we left something undone. Thanks for following along, your motivating comments through the build, and please remember that your feedback is encouraged.

While waiting for supplies and figuring out the Spartan base Jarrod and I got another "figure done as well; "WW2 German Street Fighter"

I think the title line pretty much sums up the model. Sold through Andrea Miniatures, this figure has a wonderful sculpt. The pose and facial expressions are superb. To add to the overall image is a wonderful base. The city sidewalk, both walls, and window frame make up the majority of the base. Sorry, No work-in-progress thread for this one.

Jarrod and I added the German propaganda poster from an real WW2 on-line image printed to scale, torn, and weathered. We also added glass shards to the window frame along with broken pieces on the sill and ground. On the figure we used lead foil for the MP40 sling and the gas mask canister strap. Other items we added to the kit include a metal wire for the folded shoulder stock, shoulder, collar insignia, and Iron Cross award ribbon on button (Tamiya decal spares), and a metal / PE Iron Cross on the left *** pocket (spares).

Paints used were from Tamiya, Vallejo, MMaster, and LifeLike. Additional colors added with pastels, washes, and water colors.

His final home will be in a clear display cube. We are overall very happy with the results.

Ikar: Great start there on the fire giant, he's coming along really well. And the CAV pilot, I think her name as given by Reaper is Dana is looking good too!

The only thing that I didn't like about this kit were the fit of the weapons into the various hands.  So you'll notice his spear and gun are holstered.

Wow, but there is some awesome work there.

PhilliePhan the Mandalorian is stunning, you have done a superb job there. If I may ask, where do you get the liquid chrome from, model retailers or art stores? Also which pic do you want me to post?

ikar01 the fire giant is looking very impressive. Love what you're doing with the face!

Ben and Jarrod, what can I say? Truly stunning work! The base is fantastic and I love the idea that each figure can be lifted off individually. Beautiful figures superbly painted. Which pic do you want me to use? The German trooper is brilliant as well.

I must apologise to everyone for my recent abscence. My wife was admitted to hospital before Christmas with some serious health issues and is still there. Then I have had some major issues acessing the site. Anyway, here is what I will be working on.

In closing I'd like to wish everyone a safe and happy new year and I hope you are all ok in this terrible winter weather that is being reported on our TV.

Thanks for the kind words Dodgy!  Sending prayers for your wife.

I have seen the Molotow chrome pen at both my local hobby store and art supply stores.  To be clear the armor was achieved with Alclad chrome.  Only the buckles and design on the thigh armor were done with pen.  For such small metallic detail it excels.

That Mandalorian kit turned out great!

Looking forward to your build, Dodgy.

I finished off my project last night with a base.  Nothing special, just a scrap wood block with a hole drilled in it.  As I delve deeper into the world of resin busts, that is my one gripe: none of the kits I build had a base.

All in all, a fun kit and I will be starting something new in the near future that will fit into the GB....

How about the first Spartan photo with the white background and the center commander coming at you. As for the German street fighter, I kind of like the fourth one which shows a full view of the structure and his uniform.

Thanks again everyone for allowing me to participate in the GB. Like most GB's I've learned something from my peers and was happy to share my little contribution. Hope to see more accomplishments posted here in the future.

Well the clean up on this bloke is just about done. A lot of very fine mold lines that run deep and are hard to remove. They have also run across some of the fine detail and merged with it, so a bit challenging. Next is undercoat and paint.

Hello everybody!

Very nice work being shown here!

Ben - I like the Spartans a lot, and the base is very nice, too! The German is very good as well.

PhilliePhan79 - The Mandalorian turned out great, the metallic coats stand out!

Dodgy - that's an interesting figure you got there. Funny thing, I'd say "Ulan" is a Polish word, but "ulans" are mounted soldiers. Good luck with the assembly and I hope your wife gets well soon!

As some of you know I started my entry at last:

120mm (1:16) Verlinden 630 US M79 Grenade Gunner Vietnam

I've also got a separate WIP thread here:

https://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/5/t/191708.aspx

I started working on the parts:

120mm Verlinden US M79 Grenade Gunner Vietnam by Pawel

First thing to do would be to correct the pose a little - to place the stock of the grenade launcher in a place where it could absorb the recoil without hurting nobody. When I looked at the box first I thought we have to do with careless assembly here, but no - there's a hole in the shoulder of the figure (pointed to by a red arrow) to make you put the stock exactly like on the photo. Well the hole will be filled and I already pinned al the joints to help me make the pose better. I'll be using milliput for that, pics coming soon!

Thanks for looking and have a nice day

Dodgy,

I would like to throw in with a weird one - a next-gen fighting suit from the Maschinen Krieger line:

Everything about it is weird, from the "Soft Shell" name to the kit manufacturer (Love Love Garden).

Not many parts to the kit:

A little waprage to the optional helmet.  A dunk in hot water should fix this.

A comparison to a "normal" MaK armored fighting suit.

This kit is all about seam cleanup and painting, typical for a figure kit I suppose.

Yeah, it looks like the padded areas would have some kind of tough, flexible outer layer of ballistic/ablative anti-laser material with artificial muscles underneath.  The helmet has a solid visor, so it has a similar indirect sight as the Mercenaries' SAFS suit.

I know this is all sci-fi, but this fighting suit concept seems more practical than a bulky mechanical exoskeleton.  I can see the army developing something like this in the near future.

Okay, the kit I'll be doing is a 1/35 Djiti's Production US Soldier with Kid (pic 1). However, in a twist on the kit, I will be making a war correspondent who is giving the Bible to a child. This means my man the soldier will have to lose his gun and have a "PRESS" insignia stamped somewhere on his person. Now, this doesn't seem too complicated overall; but it could be a pricey change. For one thing, I need to get a replacement 1/35 right hand because the man's right hand is molded to his gun currently. Furthermore, I wouldn't mind placing a camera in his new right hand, meaning I'd have to get a set of modern cameras, too.

Anyway, off to the races:

Here's the kit and some of my initial paint work...and that hand molded to a gun. Coming along alright so far. I'll probably slap the PRESS insignia on the man's helmet since the shear amount of stuff this guy's carrying makes it hard to get it on his vest. And I know ammo pouches probably aren't the best to leave on a correspondent, but they're molded to his body. So, I'll just leave those on him and pretend he's carrying some extra camera parts or something in 'em.

I went back and studied the movie. The flesh tone on Sadako-san's arms and hands is pretty much normal skin tone. Her nails are torn up and bloody from trying to climb out of the well she died in so I did add a little reddish brown wash to her fingernails.

I've got some flickering LEDs for the TV and they look pretty good inserted inside. Will get photos of it up when I get a little more done on it.

PS: The nightgown is still in grey primer. There's some rough areas in the 3D printed model I'm having to fill and sand out. I'd thought the gown was all ripped and torn and so I could skip some of the cleaning up but on rewatching the film the gown is pretty pristine and perfect. Odd considering how Sadako died trying to climb out of an abandoned well....

Hey Gamera, even at this early stage the creepy factor is cranked way up.  Looking forward to seeing more!

Hi all. Obviously I have been absent for some time. When I last posted I thought I was ok and dealing with things, and then the bottom fell out. Due to my grief I have not been near my bench, or even looked at the FSM website for months. I now have a better handle on things and have started building again.

I would like to offer a big vote of thanks to Gamera because it seems like he's been holding things together here, for which I am very grateful. I would also like to thank you all for your patience and commend you for the fine work you have been putting in. Hopefully I have updated everything, but if I have missed something, please let me know.

Hello Dodgy!

It's good to have you back with us. I've seen you put my M79 gunner on the front page - thanks a lot! What are you working on now? Have a nice day!

I'm sorry to hear about all you went though Dodgy. I hope maybe we can take your mind off things.

And I've done nothing really, just plugging along on Sadako-san. I'm still working on the TV. The thing about 3D printed is you get the straitions though everything and I'm trying to sand the worst of them out.

Grief takes time.  I've had my share of losses and give yourself time.  The other thing is you can be chugging along doing okay and something blindsides you and tanks you again.  Time my friend.  The only solution.

Thanks,

Sorry to hear about what you have been going through mate. Having people you can talk to, taking time and acknowledging grief can help on a long road.

Take care mate.

It's good to have you back Dodgy.

Some great work shared so far.  I've only recently gotten started on my figures.  An early shot of the two characters at the bar.

progressreport

I haven't done a figure before (only tabletop game miniatures) so it's slow going.  I'll probably create a WIP post in the Figures forum and provide occasional updates here.

There is some great work going on here.

Drums and Jarrod, the Spartans are amazing, so good.

Glamdring Fury man is very cool

Ikar, that is one scary dude there

Pawel, nice job on the launcher man

Pat, good work on your space cowboy marine

Phillie, Mando looks all business. Can you take the helmet off?

I have had the Aussies on sticks and primed for a few months. I am converting a tankman, and I was not happy with the lack of gear on board so I did a mould around another figure to cast some of their gear.

The mould being formed

And the gear in place on the figures, ready for more primer.

Progress of the bartender.  Test fit the head and arms with blue tack.  Not sold on how his beard looks. Plenty left to do with the face and body.  Unfortunately much of the detail on the bartender turned out to be rather soft.

bartender

Sadly they only included that one section of the bar top.  Thinking of scratchbuilding a couple more sections to provide sufficient room for the figures to be posed as intended.  Getting started on his human partner.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. This is truly the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with.

Moving on, Lost Again, the way you moulded those packs was really clever and informative, thanks for sharing.

Phoenix, I'm loving the bar tender! What is it about the beard you don't like? If it's the representation of a beard, have you thought about working it with a hot needle? Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but a needle, blunt end first, is pushed into a cork, and then you can heat the other end to work on refining beards and hair.

Thanks Dodgy!

I did not know about that trick with the needle.  That is worth giving a try.  Adding it to my book of tips!  While I do think the beard is lacking in physical texture, my comment was more about the coloration of the beard.  I've continued to play with it as I put him together.

oldbaranother

Hopefully the two images will post side by side so it's easier to see the differences in coloration.  I drybrushed a couple layers of different colors onto it.  Final dry brush is a metallic copper, which suprisingly didn't leave a metallic sheen to his beard.  I think it's made it look a bit more natural.

The fourth arm won't be attached till I finish up the wine bottle.  I want to print a label for it and have it pouring.

To mimic beverage pouring I stretched a bit of sprue that I'll attach and finish shaping to hopefully help create the illusion. This was my first try at stretching sprue.  It was surprisingly challenging to do.

sprue fail

This guy is slow going for me.  Spend a lot of time thinking about how to do the next step.  Not as comfortable with building figures and because of it, tend to over think everything.

It's hard to express how gratifying it is to hear how the little guy has sparked the imagination! Smile

He does appear to be a barkeep of dubious morals.  Perhaps, he might add a little something special to the drink of a particularly well heeled customer.  That it might ease the efforts of certain partners of ill repute, as they relieve said customer of the burden of their valuables. For a percentage of course.  Smile

I certainly hope the magic remains as he moves to completion.  His human partner had to be taken back to plastic after an unfortunate series of events left him looking more like a cousin of the Toxic Avenger.

Painting skin is hard.

I got some more work done on Sadako. I hope (and the operative word here is HOPE) I'll have her done by Halloween. I still need to do the white highlights on the robe and the TV base is still in grey primer.

I've got some printer downloads for tatami mats to try to get a little closer to the movie scene here...

Such a scary movie.  Looking awesome!

The thing I like about eastern horror films is that things don't work out.  Western films always have closure.  In the ring, you would figure once they found her sekeleton in the well and put her to rest that her spirit would move on.  NOPE just evil!  So fun.  Curious though how many eastern horror films involve children and water...  Great stuff

Thanks,

John

Is it possible to Dremel out the TV and place a bright, flickering LED inside, to create backlighting?  That would look absolutely nuts!

Hello guys, sorry been a little under the weather but I pulled out Sadako this evening and got a little more done.

John: Yeah, most Hollywood horror movies don't really scare me anymore. Too much gore and jump scares. As you say Asian movies are just creepy though! I loaned my copy of the Korean horror film 'The Wailing' to a friend and he really liked it. Very disturbing movie. I'm not totally sure I understand the ending but it's just creepy as hell...

Phoenix: Thanks, the tatami mats aren't perfect, about a third or so undersize from what Real G told me but I wanted to get the thing done so I just went ahead with what I had. I can always pull them up later if I want to redo them.

G: My friend I think you said something about the lights before. Or someone did. Anyway I found these really neat tiny flickering LEDs each slightly smaller than a grain of rice. I kinda wish they put out a little more light. I'm not sure I should have painted the screen of the TV or not since they looked good before but after painting I have to dim the lights a little to get them to show well.

Anyway Sadako-kun complete:

The whole shebang with the screen lit:

With the lights dimmed:

I wish I could capture some the flickering action but I'm not sure how post it. My phone's camera will capture video footage but I'm sure how to put it up.

And thanks guys, ya'll are too kind. Guess I'm my own worst critic, the more I look at the TV screen the better it does look. Our IPMS meeting is this Thur so I'm going to take her with me, I like to have something horror related in October- I brought the Kappa last year, and see what they think.

Gamera,

I think I took your cold!  I was feeling off since last Thursday, and it turned into a full-blown body ache, stomach ache, congested lungs, sore throat, and headache.

I should have known something was up when I went to a jobsite wearing the wrong shoe on each foot!  I was wondering why my feet hurt, but didn't look down until I was rounding the corner heading back to my office.  Now, how did I even fit my shoes that way I will never know.

I hate getting sick before the weekend.  I slept all day on Saturday.  I wanted to work on a model, but was too wiped out.  I tested myself for COVID, but it was negative.

Now you watch, I'll feel better on Monday.Sad

Yuck, I hope you feel better too G!

Not sure if it's the same thing. I had horrible diarrhea and my head felt like a church bell Quasimodo was swinging from. No sinsus, throat, or body aches.

Frankly a healthy day at work is better than a sick day at home- at least for me, your mileage may vary.

Crossing my fingers you're feeling better soon! And put sticky notes on your shoes with a 'L' on one and 'R' on the other if you have to!!!

G'day fellas, sorry to hear that some of you have been crook. It's a fair bugger when you want to do stuff but can't find the motivation because you've been laid low by a bug. I have been away for a couple of weeks on some voluntary work that I do for our veteran community, so I haven't been able to check in.

Phoenix painting skin is the hardest thing to do when modelling figures, so don't be discouraged. I have been doing it for years and I'm still trying to get it right. My approach is to undercoat the flesh areas in a dark redish brown enamel. I let that dry and then start working up the various tones. I work in oils and blend the various shades as I go. Good luck mate, I'm sure you'll get there.

Gamera, Sadako is world class mate! The effect with the lighting is awesome. Have you considered putting it in a simple shadow box? Honestly mate, you have nailed it.

Cheers,

Dodgy

Holy frijoles, it's been a while since I posted.

If all goes well I should have a completed bartender to post some pictures of in the near future.

His partner, not so much.  I've taken him back to plastic three or four times.  I think I'm expecting too much from my current level of skill.  The decision has been made to make this the final attempt and take it come what may.

Dodgy, the words from your last post must have stuck with me because my recent attempt is exactly the method you outlined, but in acrylics.

Hey Gamera,

Glad you like how the bartendar turned out.  I was pleasantly surprised by that myself.

I find painting aliens easy.  There's no wrong way to do it.  Well, there's a lot more creative latitude at least.  Painting a human is something I challenged msyelf with.:)

Apologies if I made it sound like I was getting frustrated with painting the companion to the bartender.  Was trying to share some of why it has been slow going.  I'm not very skilled at painting earthlings and it's been a rewarding challenge learning how to paint this guy.  In the process I've learned several ways of how not to do it.  Big Smile

Here's a sneak peak of how things are going.happy couple

I almost have the wine bottle finished and will be then be able to focus my entire efforts on that poor incomplete human bean(being).

LOL, I think you may be onto something there.  I was going to say he had a really bad case of space measels as a youngling.  Yours however fits better with the bar theme..  :)

The bartender is completed and I think I'm going to call the face and hands done on the barfly.  I am content with the curent product which means I can move onto completing the assemblage of his outfit.

I thought I was almost done but after seeing that...  The sides and back of his head were even worse.  Like I said, Space Measles.

So I figured, heck, adding more paint can't make it worse! LOL!

So add more paint I did. I think I hit him with a sepia wash and drybrushing of something.  Then gave him some pupils.

Judge Doom

Better, but now he reminds me of Christopher Lloyds Character in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".  Adding more paint seems to work, so time to throw on more! More drybrushing, I think it was some shade of grey.  Then a gloss coat. Then another wash, I think it was thinned burnt red mixed with white... maybe. By now I'm totally lost and I'm just throwing s**t at him and hoping what sticks is an improvement.

Did I do that?

Holy cow by some miracle it worked!  Apparently my magic formula for painting skin is 60% dumb luck + 39% perserverance + 1% skill.  LOL!

Exactly!

I should know by now that every model goes through an ugly phase when painting.  Just have to push through the mental revulsion and keep at it long enough to reach the beauty phase.  Wink

Then I have to resist the temptation to tweak one more thing.  That's the most dangerous time.  The moment where everything can be undone because of the obsession to make it just a little bit better.  I've come to near ruin simply because I couldn't leave well enough alone. So, I tell myself "be content, take it as it is, and appreciate what's been accomplished".  It can be challenging to do so, but getting better at it. :)

Well Phoenix I reckon you've done a fantastic job on both of them. Congratulations mate on some top work!

John, I'm happy to let this roll on if you still want to have a crack. I haven't done mine yet either.

Thanks to all of you for your support, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Dodgy.

The Strange Company Couple are done.  Met my (adjusted) goal of completing them before the end of the year.  Finished pics are below

Whew, this build was both a fun and challenging one to do. Learned a ton about painting figures.  Couldn't be happier with how they turned out..

Thanks Dodgy for putting together and running the GB.  And thanks to everyone for their advice and words of encouragement.

It was my pleasure Phoenix, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I have not been as involved as I should have been, but it's been a difficult year. You did excellent work mate and I love the photos. Which one do you want me to post?

Regardless, I think you've been doing a bang up job.  Hope we get to see a few more completions.

Let us use the last photo of the lineup for posting.

Some fantastic stuff being done while I have absented myself!

Phoenix G, great work on the happy couple, they have come out really well there. Love the alien's colouring, and his mate has come up really well.

Gamera, Sadako is super! The flickering TV screen is a great compliment to the model.

I have been very sporadically getting to the bench this year due to life stuff, I have been advancing my Diggers slowly, but I have neglected to take photos as I went. So this is where I am up to, they are done in desert Auscam, with occasional standard auscam bits of kit here and there.

They look fantastic Lost. Painting cam uniforms is an art in itself. I will get back to my figure next week.

They're looking great!  Like the camo.  I've not done anything like that before.  How long did it take to complete the three?  It's giving me inspiration for how I might do a post apocalypse figure I have in my stash.

Thanks all, the diorama is on the backburner as I am going for a new job, and just got back from a Japan holiday.

Phoenix, I have dragged this out over a very long period due to life not totally going to plan last year, with concentrated effort probably a month or two.

Plase do take inspiration where you can get it and thanks for the support.

But I am calling the figures complete -

The big thing Phoenix is to take your time and I would advise some practice on an old figure first. Shadows and highlights are quite difficult with cammo uniforms, but if all else fails a dark, (not too dark), wash or weathering, will often work to blend the various colours.

Gamera, sorry for the delay mate, but I've finally posted the photo of your figure.
