Looks like I have everyone. Names are drawn, just waiting for last minute signups. Emails going out on Thursday.

For those that get giftees out of the US, I suggest either Amazon Prime and direct ship or buy from a shop in the same country and drop ship. Amazon is my go to as it works well and is cheap with prime free shipping.

I want everyone to remember the new rule!!!

ANY unfinished builds from past SSGB's are welcome to be carried forward into the existing one. Let's keep this thread busy with kits. Lord knows I have two to do this time, as I too, am behind. Love this time of year.

This year is coming together smoother than last year. We really have a good solid group once again and I think things are really starting to gel. Now that my busy season is winding down, just one more week. I can get back to hiding at the bench. Looking forward to moving some of these builds along.

I can confirm my gift arrived...last week.  It got mixed in with all the other Christmas delivery boxes that have been arriving and I didn't realize it until this evening while we were sorting out what arrived so far.   It is still unopened and will remain as such for 10 more days!

Ohh!  Very nice.  That should be a excellent kit, have the Revell version and from what I've read, the Tamiya is a superior one.

G'day all and seasons greetings. I hope all are safe and well given the terrible winter you are having. I apologise for not responding earlier, but my wife went into hospital with some serious health issues the week before Christmas and is still there. Then I had trouble with logging in, so I am now playing catch up. The range of gifts looks fantastic and I am very, very pleased with mine. Thank you Santa. I am hoping Jill will be home today/tomorrow and I plan to start my build next week.

Robert, that Zero looks fantastic. Probably a real gem coming from Eduard and not the old Tamiya kit. That is a real nice one. I am totally looking forward to seeing it.

Don't worry about working on it. Get your wife handled and if time remains then you can think about models. Family first!!

Work on last years gift (2022), the Panther, has begun in earnest. I am still planning on putting this one on a colapsed bridge dio. I am making my way forward so I can begin the zimmerett applicaiton. I've never done this before so it should prove interesting. Road wheels are done but I have left the suspension loose so I can set it once I have the position dialed in on the bridge. Then I can set the wheels and build the tracks.

I am planning on starting this years kit (2023), the Mercedes, next week. I am trying to finish up on more kit for 2022, a P-51B for Lewbud. Painting on it has begun.

Keep up the great work guys,

BK

Nice start on the Cat, Brandon.

I have a side question, I think you posted about some database software for model stashes.  Was that you and what was the name of it?  I tried searching, but the forum search function leaves much to be desired....

Got started on the Mercedes today. Mostly cleaning up parts and getting them ready for primer and some base coats. Most of the pieces have multiple colors on each one, so there will be tons of hand painting also.

I am still working on my LRDG truck but I just couldn't resist, had to open the He 219. Holly molly, this is going to be a big aircraft.

This is a very heavy metal part for the cockpit. Heavy enough to keep the plane upright, There are more frames but they are identical to these, just the other side of the plane.

Indeed a great idea. The Me-262 I built not too long ago also had a metal machinegun platform in the nose and the Salamander jet came witha heavy metal ball bearing plus a small bracket to keep it in place.

I noticed that with my Salamander as well. I'll agree that is a classy move by Tamiya, especially with a plane as large as the He-219.

The jet factory has opened fot the year, starting with the Phantom.  The office is nearly finished and the seats temprarily occupied for the photo.

I think the plane's stick is supposed to be molded into the pilot figure, since there is not a separate piece for one.  That or they molded him doing something unmentionable... Surprise

I think the plane's stick is supposed to be molded into the pilot figure, since there is not a separate piece for one.  That or they molded him doing something unmentionable... Surprise

Hi folks, this is looking like a great year, some awsome kits in there, if you don't count questionable behaviours of Phantom pilots....... Would never happen in the Navy......

Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Anyway, moving right along, as they used to say on Laugh In..... I have taken pics of the sprues for the Zero, as I thought you might like to take in the detail, so bear with me.

This kit is simply awesome, but be aware, a good study of the instructions and colour plates will pay dividends. I have chosen to do an aircraft of the Tainan kokutai at Buna in 1943. Now spending some time looking at references. Thaaaaaank you Santa!

That does look like a really nice kit, Robert. Certainly has far more parts than the old Tamiya kit. Should build up awesome.

Progress has been made on the Phantom.  The fuselage has been sealed and the wings installed.

The seams needed some work, but I think they are set.  We'll find out when I prime it.

I am thinking of making this an in flight display, if the wheelwell doors have a good fit and don't pose too much of a hassle.  Do any of you experienced aircraft builders have recommendations for a stand?

Dear Lord, I love Phantoms!! Sweet to see it coming along. I've always liked the look of jets in flight with the clear acrylic rods coming out of the nozzles. You would have to find some and bend it up, but it would look epic.

Starting to make some headway on the Mercedes. I have the nose piece glued in and filled. The kit part just adds this where the real car the nose is all one piece. I have filled the gap with CA and putty. I primed all the parts and found the nose to still need some work. More sanding and she is looking ready for more primer. Filled some pin holes with CA again. I have also started to paint all the small parts. I hope I can paint the body this weekend, but I'm not gonna rush it. I want it perfect. That's it for now.

Clear acrylic rod would definitely be the way to go.  Need to put a brass rod in the phantom to accept the clear rod.

Thanks for the tips for a display base.  I have been watching a number of youtube videos on the matter, and some indeed used acrylic rods.  We'll see....

Assembly is bascically done on the aircraft itself, this was the state of it last night.

Today's build session was spent cleaning up the intake seams, priming, and chasing other seams.  I ordered a Vietnam War jet paint set, so painting will take place later this week, hopefully.

Just when I think I'm ready to glue the canopy on and call it done, I overthink the weathering and delve into a mess. This is controlled chaos I promise.

Nice work on the office Castel.

Good luck Mopar!  LOL

The Phantom has the camo based in, still working on some clean up spots, and trying to figure out why the metallic has bits of the basecoat showing through that I can't see with the Mark 1 eyeball, but show up on the camera.

Next up, detail painting, the external stores, and eventually the in flight display base when all those supplies arrive.

The Phantom looks really good. I can't see the issues you're mentioning, so I would not stress about it. It looks great. And that F-16 looks amazing. I have always wanted to do a jet like that with the rod and base. I need to add that to my list of must haves. Super cool.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT !!

Just a quick announcement for all the wonderful peeps that join me every year in this super fun build. After this year wraps up I will no longer be doing the SSGB. If someone wants to take up the mantle and run it and do their own thing with it, they are more than welcome to do so. Sign ups are pretty steady over the years, but actual participation in GB's is at an all time low and I'm getting tired so I feel it's time to pass it on and move on. FSM seems to be dying, I don't know why, but it shows big time in the GB's over the past few years. This year is the worst I've ever seen. We will continue to have fun with this one and watch as everyone builds those super cool gifts.

I hear you and don't quite know what to say. There was that discussion about bleak GB scene. I sign up here and there but few topics get my attention, even if i really enjoy GBs. But I build what gets my attention, not just for the sake of building something. Danno re dying FSM...maybe. I don't have a subsription, there is nothing there that one can't get here for free. I checked other modeling forums but they all look somehow disjointed, way too many sub forums, sub-sub topics etc. Just can't be bothered to figure them out, FSM is very easy and well organized.

I don't mind hosting GBs but it is quite disheartening to have bunch of people sign up but only few finish.

Either way, thanks for hosting this one, it is much appreciatedSmile

I feel like I am a part of the problem in that I am now seeing this this two weeks later when going to post an update...yikes.  Thanks for putting these together over the years BK.  It is a true story when I say that the SS GB was what drew me back to the FSM forums after a multi year hiatus.

The Phantom is on a break, and I was out of town for most of last week, so I decided to start the F16.  Unfortunately, it seems my camera corrupted some of my early WIP shots of the Falcon.  Angry

I had a chance to get started on the GT 40 this weekend! The Wright Field Scale Modelers have a build day at a local hobby shop and I thought it would be perfect to open the box there. This is a really superb kit. The body is so smooth that it is gonna paint up really nice. I think I'm gonna do Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi 1968 powder blue and orange scheme for it. I don't like any of the standard red blue white black that they do now.

Since we're working on a folding table i focused on subassemblies. Here's where i left off...

more to come. I've got some great MCW Enamels to use for the paint scheme!

Always great to see WIP pix. Here is the latest from Hans and Fritz...

On the side of the pic and on the top of the paint jars are 2 of the 5 radar antens. They are thin and fragile and attached to the sprue at 5 places. So one has to do 25 very careful cuts in order not to break them and then 25 more careful trims. Phew, made it without breaking anything.

Wow! Hans and Fritz have been busy. That is quite a scheme there. Those look super cool when done but not so much fun to actually paint. Great work on the paint and congrats on the successful surgery on the antennas. Well done.

Gotta love those surprises in the mail.  My Santa delivered this week!  The wonderful Eduard P-51 early-version (Without the tail fillet)

I'll post some pics shortly when I can pry my phone away from my son.

The downside?  I'm still several weeks away from my workshop being completed as part of our basement reno.  While they're 3-weeks ahead of schedule, we're still waiting on flooring, paint and electrics.

Nice finish, Chad. That is awesome. For an older Revell PM kit it is really nice. I wonder if this is someone else's kit reboxed. Excellent finish, gorgeous!!

BK

Edit, nope. It's a PM kit from 97. Great kit.

The Falcon finally looks like a plane jet:

And it has it's color too:

It is now at the same place as the Phontom...I have a lot of decalling to do on these two birds now.

G'day mates I'm back and I have really missed you all. I've also got a lot to catch up on. Chad that's a beautiful job on the 410. BK I'm truly sorry to hear about your decision with the SSGB, but I fully understand. I have not been doing a lot for obvious reasons, but just before Jill passed I received the 1/48th scale workable tracks for my King Tiger from last years SSGB.

My goodness, those are some sexy tracks. Good thing that's a King Tiger in 1/48 because any other kit in that scale would be a nightmare in size to work with. Well done my friend. That is one good looking build.

Thanks Chad, I agree the F16 is growing on me.  It is like the go cart in the fighter jet world...and I think the Wisconsin ANG flies them out of Madison so I may try and find a decal set and build another.

Dodgy, glad to see you back at it, well done on those tracks!

Thanks fellas, the tracks require a lot of patience, but the detail is beautiful. Now waiting on paints, Tamiya and Mr. Colour, to finish the King Tiger and start the Zero. I'm told they may take some weeks! It seems to be getting harder and harder to obtain supplies out here and considering where I live, it's not like I can just pop into a shop.

No worries. Glad to have you active.

As far as supplies, yup, even here in the states some things are getting harder to get and I don't have any shops around me at all. I've been stocking up on many things in the event we can't get stuff I'll be ok. Keep on trucking.

I may change my mind by the time gets here. I'm just feeling burned out and the energy for this one just seems to have died. I'm sure It's something I have done or not done, I just haven't been able to put my finger on it and that frustates me. It kinda sucks the life right out of ya. Hopefully, I can get it figured out and continue. "it remains to be seen" indeed.

I don't think it is something you have or have not done. I think when you put time and effort into something and then the participation is just not there it is dishearthening/demoralizing. I bet you would feel much more energized and feel appreciated if there would be more WIP updates, more participation etc. Just my thoughts.

As my WIP has been lacking due to a basement remodel, I am excited to say I just wrote the last *Gulp* check to my contractor, and now have a completed basement which includes a brand new work-shop for modeling.  I even took it so far as to add an Epoxy floor (like the ones used in garages).  Now the task is pulling all my tools, paints, and accessories out of storage.  I hope to break sprue on my P-51 within the week and join the GB in full.

Hi all. Castelnuovo that 219 is awesome. Top work mate!

I have finished assembly of the tracks for the Tiger. This afternoon I hope to fit and paint them. Have also started on the Zero, but it's such a good quality kit that I'm frightened of stuffing it up.

Made progress on my Polikarpov now that summer is basically here.

Scratchbuilt seatbelts with tin foil and used a small bit of wire for the frame to attach two of 'em to.

Working towards getting her airbrush ready!

Thanks, guys. I've got some more pics to share with the bird painted. Unfortunately, PostImages wasn't working this morning; so, I'll just have to try again. Only have to throw on the wheels, canopy, bombs, and decals now for my I-16 to be technically done.

I've opened the Mig and have been making slow but steady progress. The plastic has great detail and the fit is fantastic. I am making the Czech scheme from the box art, but there are also markings for two Polish aircraft in a more standard camoflage.

Looks like a nice kit. Your pit looks really good. And slow progress is at least progress. The end result will be stunning for sure and we are all looking forward to seeing it. Can't wait to see more.

Hi folks, sorry for my long abscence, but just when I thought I was getting a grip on things, everything went to hell. Until a few days ago I hadn't been near my bench for months.

John I love the the Polikarpov, awesome job mate.

Stu your P51 is outstanding. Top work fella.

A couple of pics to show where I'm at. The pit bits of the Zero have all been sprayed silver and coated with hairspray. Next step is to spray the cockpit colour and do some weathering. The Tiger needs some adjustment work on the tracks, some adittional bits added and then it's just about finishing the painting and weathering.

I wasn't really happy with the blue, but as no one will see it, I decided not to waste time re-doing it.

Those are both looking very nice. The camo looks excellent, can't wait to see the chipping with hairspray. Also, the Aotake looks very good. My understanding on it was that it was not too consistant across various manufacturers, so it looks great to me.

I have been super busy this year and also laid up for the last month. I have not been on the forums much and I haven't built at all in months. My back is bad atm and I can't sit for long, so forums and building have been sat aside. I hope to be back at it soon and get my gift completed. I really want to work on it, but like I said, pain stops me in my tracks. Keep all the great stuff coming guys, I really do like to see it come together.

Great looking work, John. She looks like she's going mach 2 sitting still.

I'm finally feeling better after 3 months laid up. I am going to get back on the Mercedes very shortly. Can't wait to paint it.

Calling this one done.  Had a bunch of issues - mostly my fault plus some experiments that went south.  But thankyou so much secret santa I really appreciate the thoughtful gift.

She's a tail sitter ( again my fault ) hence the blob of clay under the tail.

She's up on the shelf with my trainer squadron

you might have had problems John, but no one would know it. A beaut job mate.

So my bench time has been very hit and miss, but I have been working on the cockpit of the Zero and I'm just about to close it up. Have also been doing some work on the Tiger II and will post pics later today.

Hi Fella's. The Zero is a beautiful kit, thank you Secret Santa! I'm just hoping I can do it Justice. Unfortunatley I lost a couple of parts to the carpet monster, so I have halted production until I find them, or can replicate them, meanwhile, a couple of pics of the Tiger. Almost there. Just need to add some minor bits and do the weathering.

Thanks for the positives folks.

I'm typing this now for the second time because the bloody site dropped out. I should have known better because I've been caught like that before on several occasions and then couldn't bring myself to repeat it all again. Moving on.

Thanks for the positive words fellas, but BK I owe you a huge apology as I've let you down. The Tiger is finished, but the Zero is not. I will finish the Zero next year in a WIP on the aircraft thread. I also apologise to the donor, it will be built and not go into the stash, or the shelf of doom. It is a magnificent kit and I love it, it's just that life, my shakes and a reduction in motivation that I put down to grief, got in the way. 2023 has not been a good year for me.

BK I have loved this GB, even though it's only been my second year. So many good models and mateship. Good on yer mate, you've done a great job, but I can fully understand why you won't be doing it again in 2024.

Ok, to the Tiger. I apologise for the quality of the photographs, the lighting is crap and I'm a crap photographer. My own opinion is that the paint job is too dark and there are several problems with the tracks.

After paint and glue the tracks became very brittle and broke so easily whenever I handled them. Eventually, I just decided that regardless of any issues, I would leave them as they were. On a positive note, the kit itself is a gem and I loved building it. I added the cable for the front headlight, rubbed graphite around the muzzle brake to represent blast compounds and mixed white glue and green food dye for the vision ports in the hull and the commanders cupola.

Thanks again BK. As a GB it was a lot of fun and much appreciated.

Oh yes....... I forgot about the decal on the port side of the turret. It broke up and hence is missing a bit. 008 might find itself with a minor hit there....

Dodgy, well done!!! That Tiger is killer. I don't think it is too dark, I think it looks correct. Too bad about the track troubles, but it looks wonderful. I think you did a amazing job on this and I hope one day when I build one I can make it look half this good. Amazing work.

Don't worry about what you haven't gotten done, just about everyone had something go on this year that prevented them from getting more done. That's just how it is.

Great finish!!! Bow Down Beer

Resurrecting this to prove I did not lose my projects...and have actually made recent progress on them.

I have all the decals on the F-16 now, and the F-4 almost done.  Just the underside decals to go for that one.  All I have otherwise left are some paint touch ups, ordinance installation, finishing up the bases, and then sealing them.  I am hopeless with giving timelines, but I am getting antsy to get these wrapped up so hopefully no more than a week or two.

I retrospect, my life would have been a lot easier, and these would have been done last Spring,  if I had left the wheels down rather than going with in flight displays for the first time, but live and learn.

BK, can I continue to post my Zero work on here? It could be March before I finish it though. I was going to post the continuing work in the aircraft section, but I would prefer for you to see it finished in this section, as I reckon I owe it to you and the donor to se it done.

Finally!! An update on my SS build. Man, being knocked out of building completely due to my back injury really sucked. I am, however, finally back at it. This kit is an absolute joy to work with. Everything fits perfect and the kit has no clean up.

At this point I have 99% of the decalling done, primary paint is on and wet sanded. Now I need to move on to clear coat on the body. There is a TON and I mean a TON of detail work to do on this and progress seems slow, but I make progress everyday and I am very pleased with it thus far. I have reached a point in the build now where I am beginning to add the wiring and plumbing the kit does not have. This will take a bit, but it will add just that little bit more to an already stellar kit. This has to be the finest quality auto kit I have ever laid my hands on, and I've build a ton. Great pick there SS.

I'll post of more soon as this one is on the way to competion.

PS I added carbon fiber to the seat, wing and some other bits as the real car has this. It really makes this kit pop. Enough blabbing, here is the pics.

Okay, quick update. I am getting there. At this point I have to polish the clear, cut and buff and do some minor assembly. Then on to final assembly and any touch ups I may need and the glamor shots. Man, what a spectactular kit this is.

Okay gents, she's DONE!! What a great kit. Easily the finest, best fitting kit or any kind I have ever laid my hands on. Unparelleled in its quality and fit. One quick update real quick. As you can see by the image below we have a full set of tires. The upper two are direct out of the box, while the lower two have been media blasted using a small airbrush style media blaster that shoots super find abrasives out. It takes the shine out of the rubber and makes the tires look far more real. I used Aluminum Oxide 200 grit in this instance. The tool was about $60 US, Chicago Neumatics brand, for the full kit. Tool, hose, media, everything. Great investment.

Now off to the glamor shots. It was painted with Scale Finishes Metallic Silver and 2K clear. I sanded and polished the paint using Micromesh from 4K-12K and then used Novis #2 with a dremel and soft pad to finish it off. The paint is like glass and the lighting does not do it justice. Thanks for looking and THANK YOU SS for this great kit.!!

Ok, some updates from me. Cockpit tub is finished and the fuselage closed up. Tonight i will get the wings on and hopefully things should speed up from there. The cockpit in this kit has to be seen to be believed.
