                        Ako, this build officially ended October 31, 2004. All in all I think my first GB idea went OK. There is/was talk of another Budget Group Build. I have a lot of group builds I’m participating in at this time so will not be starting any new ones. If anyone wants to take the idea and run with it feel free.

                        I think your build caught the essence of the build as well as anyone. Good job on it.

                        After reading through the thread I realized I didn’t post a final picture of my Vette. Here it is for alls enjoyment. I didn’t have any money in my budget for decal solution so the decal didn’t sit down very well. Notice the splits.

                        Anyhow I thought it was a fun build and did enjoy it.

                        Yes this GB is coming to an end soon. Maybe we’ll do another after the first of the year. I think a “Revenge of the Budget Group Build” or “The Cheap Kit I Got From Grandpa Dan For Christmas GB” might be in order. It would be the same basic premise with a little tweaking of the rules.

                        I will be posting the completed picture of my Corvette very soon. I had a couple disasters with the decals but overall I am pretty happy with my build. This was my first car kit in probably 30 years.

                        i just found this thread and think that this is a really cool idea, and its a shame i just found it ( i also have some nice kits i got off ebay for cheap i could have used!). just wondering if there will be another??

                        Hi;
                        Just checking in to see how everyone is doing? My wildcat is assembled and waiting for testors spray paint. I got 2 cans for 150 each at a local candy store that used to sell models and gave it up. I build my plane while I am working at the Fire Dept. 2-24hr. shifts per week Between calls I usually get a total of 1 hr. building time.
                        (more than at home with two young girls 3-5 and a working wife) hope to have pics and info by late next week

                        What a great idea for a GB! I have a Monogram wildcat that I paid .98$ in "78" I would like to build it in the Atlantic ASW scheme So I still have 24.02 to spend !! I'm in!.... Do I need to sign a form or give a blood sample ??? what is the procedure for joining a GB??

                        Here are a few pics of my finished model. It had two different paint schemes, all black, the one I did and grey upper and white lower. The decals for the black version where red and looked terrible, that and I spilled some liquid on them late one night, so I went with the decal for the alternative. Hope you enjoy.

                        Almost finished image above. You can now see the discarded flexistraws inserted for exhaust. The discarded bic lighter bits and pieces in the rear area. The atmosphere electromagnetic frequency receptors attached to front are from broken clock and lighter. Mosquito screen from local construction site pile. This was fun to work on. I asked to join this GB with this already built project because I thought it would fit in well. Model Grandpa wasn't sure if it would be appropriate, so that's fine. I'll just post for 'show off purposes'Wink [;)]

                        quick update. i had painted and cleared the car a few weeks a go and had let it cure completely. i started looking at it today, and lets just say that i have never seen so much orange peel in my life. so i decide to wetsand it. after letting it air dry for awhile, i just couldnt stand looking at the scuffed post-snd look on the paint. so i dig out a can of clear, and go to paint it. well, i sprayed, and i noticed that a lot of paint came out at once, but of course i didnt think anything about it. i left it outside in the sun to flash over, and the clear bubbled! it wouldnt be so bad if this wasnt the third bodie in a row that the clear has bubbled on. im really starting to get annoyed. and it hasnt been very humid here this summer, so i have no idea what the deal is. well, guess what. more sanding left! omg this sucks.

                        New picture with some decals. Had to see how the red decals were going to look. I will hold off until everything else is done to finish decaling. Also when I dug out the decal I had to add to my left to do list. I need to install the windshield and mirrors.

                        wouldnt you know it, the person i traded it for didnt even ask anything in return. hes only on the SA forum, tho. it had a Wamalart clearance sticker on it for like $3.50, so i dont think he missed it too much. now that ive been thinking about it, ill proably have to go back and change my list. im going to make this a diorama of the car right after the light goes green. i know i have a dirver figure somewhere. not sure where i got it in the first place though.

                        Ok…so one thing I have learned in a budget build is do not pick a subject that’s primary color is gloss white. Finally got a fairly smooth gloss finish from the rattle can. I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Need to install the side pipes, repaint the wheels, touch up some paint and apply decals. Looks like I'll be done before the Oct. 31 deadline. I may build slowly but I more then make up for it with inaccuracy. I know old joke.

                        Progress report. I have the seat harness made and the interior tub detailed. Little touch up to do on it then I'll set it a side. The engine is now mounted to the chassis. Next up is putting the finish on the body.

                        I have made a little progress on my build; I just didn’t have enough time to go around this weekend. Spent the last 30-45 minutes working on a harness for the seat, I did not like the results and will try again later. The interior “tub” is just sitting in the chassis, as is the engine. I haven’t decided if I’m going to attempt to wire the engine, it would be hard to do with what I have to work with.

                        Walmart! Believe me I looked around, Michaels, Craft Warehouse, LHS, swap meets...had to go with Wal*mart for this build.

                        And as I like to say at the poker tables as I push my last $4 into the pot, "I'm all in!"

                        Add: $1.47 for Super Glue and $1.97 for more paint brushes from Walmart for a new grand total of $24.11

                        I'd like to join into this Group Build with a sci-fi recon shuttle that is already completed. It fits into all the rules and procedure for this GB. I can issue a supplies list and a few in progress images, as well as a completed image. This GB attracted my attention because I built that model in a restricted budget situation while overseas. I should have been paying rent and buying food, but the model hobby head took over.

                        Let me know if it's cool, I want to attend the party, not partry poop! Clown [:o)]

                        I'm back and fully re-charged, I lie, 4 days of walking around paris is a very tiring experience. I am rearing to go and will post some Pics of how I'm getting on. I had a look at the kit again on saturday and i think it will be a quick build (3 spurs of parts 2 coloured and 1 of clear parts)

                        Here are a couple pictures of my progress so far. I have a little more done then what is pictured. The ring on the outside of the de-chromed wheels is actually a darker “gray aluminum” color I created by mixing flat back, flat white and “chrome agent” from the Testors paint set. The engine has a couple different custom colors on it.

                        This build has shown me that I’m a little rusty and need to work on my skills. Wish my pictures were better but my camera is getting old like me.

                        I am making progress on the Corvette and will have some pictures very soon. Believe it or not it’s the first time I have used a rattle can to paint a model, went from a paint brush to an airbrush.

                        I have to admit that when Mr. Hansen dropped by with his note, that it did "encourage me" a bit. That and the fact that the cockpit detail is seriously lacking....decals for the instruments, but oh, well.

                        I'm doing the subassembly thing as well...The 1/4 oz bottles will last (it's 1/72 scale) and the two rattle cans will be more than enough for the rest of the plane. I've found a few pics and I have a Cougar at NAS Oceana a few miles down the road. I'm planning on taking a few (hundred) photos this weekend, if it ever stops raining. I plan on running most of the cabling for the undercarriage with single strands of the 22 gauge wire....Now my only problem is trying to figure out how to make a decent base. I have a couple of ideas.....I may be able to get a small sheet of 1/4" or thinner plywood or wait until after the homebuilders around here leave for the day Pirate [oX)] and see what they've left behind for scrap.....

                        I have to admit, this IS a lot of fun....and I think that the others will certainly be surprised at how these thing finish up...

                        Nope, because I'm stealing my kids white glue to glue the windshield onto my corvette (when I get to that point a month or so from nowSmile [:)])

                        I'm working in sub-assemblies to save time when I go to primer and paint. I was going to build it "curb side" but with Mr. Hansen having an interest I have decided to open the hood (so detailing will be required) and may scratch build a jack stand and remove a front wheel, which will need a scratch built brake rotor/caliper etc. Also been removing chrome plating from some of the parts, the wheels should be black and natural aluminum not chrome!

                        It been a fun project so far. This will be the automobile I have built in about 35 years!

                        This is how I did the seat.....

                        Belts: Regular old masking tape, but cut to size with scissors

                        Oxygen bottle: Front half of 22 gauge electrical connector pin (it was a screwed up crimp job by a student at work)

                        Oxygen hose on seat: two strands of aforementioned 22 gauge wire, twisted by hand...

                        Face curtain and crotch ejection handles: two strands again, cut with fingernail clippers and bent around a toothpick

                        Painting:

                        Top cushion - 2 parts Camo Green and 1 part Dark Tan (best approximation to Olive Drab I could make)

                        Center cushion - Straight Camo Green

                        Bottom cushion - 2 parts Flat White and 1 part Camo Green

                        Top Belts: Dark Gull Gray

                        Middle Belts: 2 parts Dark Gull Gray and 1 part Flat Black

                        Bottom Belts: Camo Green

                        Tips: 1 drop Silver from a toothpick.

                        The green, black and yellow all came from the 12 pot Testors set, which includes handy mixing cups in the center of the tray...

                        One thing I've learned so far is how much mixing is involved to get the right FS matches from just black, white, dark gull gray, dark ghost gray and light ghost gray. And camo green and dark tan too... geez...

                        and I had to borrow some of my daughter's Silly Putty to fix the Martin Baker Mk V ejection seat in the Cougar....

                        You know what I have found difficult now that I have started to build? I want to automatically reach into the drawer and pull out a tool or supply item that I didn’t figure into my budget.

                        Looks like I’ll need to figure in more thinner (and I haven’t used any yet), fine sandpaper and I still want my CA glue.

                        Ewc2003, I would favor a non-animated badge, I like the idea of having the words over the dollar sign but maybe with the red circle/slash thingy over the dollar sign. Just my humble opinion.

                        Hey all I have some good news and some bad news. First the good news Even though the build has not officially started yet I have finished my Spitfire. Now the bad news it has now been turned into a IL-22A Stinson by my imagination. I kinda made a new type of aircraft with it when I couldnt fit the wings on right without putty. I could post some pics once I paint on the insignias but I hope this does not mean that I am out of the build.

                        About that dullcoat, I'm curious if anyone has tried hairspray for a dullcoat yet, haven't tried it on a model yet, but I remember that my friends and I were playing with a can of hairspray when we were children and we used on a mirror, which turned "frosty".

                        Ofcourse, I have no idea on how the paint will react to it.

                        Guys,

                        It can be done.

                        I had this 1/72 A-37B I got for 6 bucks at the LHS. A spray can of Gunship Gray, and a pack of military flats in the 1/4 oz bottles, and a 12 pack of Testor's acrylics in these little plastic "buckets" and was out the door for under $18.00. I used acrylics, because I can use alcohol as a brush cleaner. For decal setting, I used Future. It works great and isn't costly, since I have hardwood floors Big Smile [:D]. I brushed Future on after bombing the model in Gunship Gray, and it worked really well to give a satin sheen to it. Now to figure out a cheap dullcoat.

                        Anyhoo, here's a shot of the decals on the tail, so you can see how the Future works. It eliminates almost all the silvering (the decals were pretty crappy) and will allow the decals to conform really well. Gotta be quick though, the Future gets tacky really quick. After the decals set, I'm gonna brush another coat of Future, then weather (with the thinner sludge), and dullcoat. We'll see. By the way, this is just a test, I don't know what I'll do for the challenge...

                        yep, still going and getting paid for whatever it is i am supposed to do whilst i am there, LoL. i have scored a real biggie too but can't use it for this build (cos i ain't including my compressor - even if it was a freebee thought this would be cheating somehow), there was some old boxes and stuff that i was told to throw out, i asked should i look through it first and was told "no just bin it". guess who found a devilbiss spray gun in the pileBig Smile [:D]Approve [^] the rule at work is if its scrap we can have it.... its been used but its in very good condition and i use this type of gun every day and can get the spray quite fine.(its going to come in handy when i build my B52 me thinks Tongue [:P])

                        Hmmm...very interesting. I was wondering if there was a common household product I could use as a substitute for the decal solution, I guess this is as good as time as any to experiment.

                        Have you ever noticed how similar Micro-Set and vinegar smell? I've used vinegar as a decal setting solution and it worked great. I was using acrylics, didn't bleed through, and the decal settled in over an AV-8B wingtip just fine.... just my My 2 cents [2c]

                        Seems to me that every time i make add up my list, it will come out perfectly, and then i will notice i forgot the knife, or the brushes. Every TIme.
                        Pretty muche everything has fit onto my list, except for the glosscoat and dullcoat.
                        I have got to find cheaper replacements.
                        I'll keep looking for cheaper stuff. Its harder than it looks!

                        Also do We have a start date? If no maybe we could start in the last week of July? I was also thinking to myself, if I have Limited supplies, it will take me less time to build because there will be no detailing. Just my Idea. THat Date might Not work for some others though.

                        Hey count me in and to fully make this a challange I am going to use the 1963 1/48 Monogram Spitfire MKII, so it will be more like the old times.


                        $2.00 per can of paint (Tamiya), so I will use 8 cans of paint which is $16 worth of paint, and the kit was $7, and $2 for a wal Mart craft brush pack. Which is what I use because they are really nice belive it or not and are very cheap with about 20 different sizes, with brushes in it with sizes from fine detail work all the way to a large coating of paint like for and exterior. So total is exactly 25$

                        So am I in?

                        Gotcha... I'm an electronics type in the Navy and our lab has tons of "discarded" wire, etc, that would normally be dumped....nothing big, just lots of 20/22/24 gauge wire.....

                        Can we use "liberated items" from the workplace? Since this is not only a challenge in budgetary management, shouldn't we be able to use our resourcefulness in other ways? I'm not talking about heavy duty stuff like air guns, etc... but little bits of wire, etc... for detailing, maybe?

                        Alright, so ill exclude the paint. What about using my sisters paint brushes, she is sort of an artists with oils, here brushes were the ones i first used, secretly.

                        About sanding sticks and paper, my mom has nail files, and we have, always, alot of sand paper in our shop, so does that count as a household item. let me know. either way, im still in. This is going to be sooooooooooooo much fun. Just to see how much of a difference the tools make, or skill level.

                        Very nice build and a perfect example of the spirit of this challenge! Hope it will inspire more builders to join the BGBC (Budget Group Build Challenge).

                        It’s also food for thought. Alternate building materials, I have been scrambling trying to fit the cost of the kit and supplies into the budget, this should help with ideas on how to stretch our dollars.

                        i have scrubbed the gun mettal paint and one brush from my list, going to price up some "green stuff". if this will send me over budget i can use some kids modeling clay called plastercene that the kids don't need anymore (at least thats my excuse for pinching it from them LoL) and seal it with gloss paint (either the red or green). i will be using the white as a primer to check that everything is smooth then the black to undercoat the silver on some panels.

                        Yep gregers looks like you might have to sacrifice something to get under budget.

                        This is going to be tougher then I thought. It’s been a little slow at the shop today so I’ve started working on my list; I have had to cut some items I really wanted to use, like my super glue.

                        aw hell, i forgot about sanding stuff. i have some sandpaper of various grades that i use on cars (real ones that is). i'll also stick to just using one brush though god only knows how because i also need some filler. i will have to sort that out price wise. probably will drop the gunmettal from my paint list too because i can mix that from the others on my list.

                        Also, I painted figures before my first model, i know that i had A set of testors military colors, steel, silver, red, and gold. So i had the paint for the details. I aslo had a testors hobby knife and assorted paint brushes. no sanding sticks thoughSad [:(]. so do I have to include these items in my budget?

                        If yes... then I will probably not paint with the testors, if no.....I will paint wit the the testors. It really makes no difference to me.

                        BTW, I paid $3.00 for my first airbrush at a yard sale. One of those that takes the propellant for about $6. My father in law worked at a dump and brought home another Badger 150 that was a little rusted, so I cleaned it up and I use it the most. So I think you can airbrush on a tight budget.

                        My last build was a Monogram 1/48 B-25.
                        Kit - $8.99 from Hobby Lobby 1/2 price sale.
                        Paint - $1.89 can of Krylon Olive Drab
                        $1.89 can of light grey primer
                        Hobby Lobby "Americana" acrylics (IMHO better than MM) .58 cents each on sale, needed soft white, safety yellow, safety red, grey, and aluminum. Came to $2.90.
                        Bottle of Amboid liquid glue - $3.39
                        $19.06 + $1.55 for tax = $20.58

                        Some other items I already had - Tube of Spot Putty from Walmart automotive section, a roll of masking tape, and a bottle of Future all coming to about $8.

                        We got hit with some huge med bills and taxes this year plus a cut in pay, so I'm back to living like a kid again and found this can be done, and is quite fun.

                        Kits can be discounts, close outs, garage/yard/sidewalk sale/flea market finds, second hand store, LHS sale table, mail order (including postage), Walmart etc. My kit will probably come form either a garage sale or Goodwill (second hand) store. Just be honest about what you paid and list where it came.

                        It's part of the challenge, your going have to buy and "think out of the box." I just know that there can be some great builds on this budget.

                        Let's see:
                        $2.50 - MM Flat Black - needed on just about everything
                        $2.50 - MM Flat White - for details and to lighten other colors
                        $2.50 - One other color (TBD)
                        $3.25 - 1 Spray bomb of any base color
                        $1.20 - Tube Glue (although, I refuse to make spiderwebs with tube glue again!)
                        $2.75 - Brush
                        $1.20 - Small bottle of thinner, doubles as brush cleaner

                        $15.90 so far, and haven't even mentioned a kit yet.

                        I think I'll have to pass on this one.
