Salty your Corsair looks top knotch mateThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]BTW i can't see any dust on her at all..

Tom, misting water around eh, sounds like a pretty cool idea to me, will try it out next time, dust is a constant pain in the A_ _ for me, must be a problem for you in Texas as well........
I still have no progress to report on the Hellcat, all of my attention has been focused on the Spit MK1 i'm building which should be finished in a week or so, then i'll finish off with the finishing off on the Mustang and then the Hellcat will have my upmost attention........Jules......

Tom, i got a corsair, SBD, and a Hornet sceduled for this GB, i'm gonna have to drop one of them for sure because of the move. the Hornet is still in the box, but MAN, i'm on fire to put her together!! just tired of prop jobs, kinda want a change. who knows, time will tell. i just want to build it straight OOB. later.

been there done that... recently I was building an OV-10B... realized halfway through the camo didnt extend below the read elevators... hd to TRY to match it back up on the back end...

good luck to ya scott! although what you are facing should be handleable...

and I got to say this... after reading a little about the SBD's I have to respect them... sank more tonnage than any other warbird... shot down countless Japanese a/c etc... one tough if slow aircraft...

actually got a little building time in today... not much done... finished my "homegrown" seat belts <took forever it seemed, especially bending the buckles with 2 xactos>and while they are ok they aren't great.. but from what you can see of the interior once the canopy is on (even in an open position) it is more than fine...

got the upper cockpit deck on and the radio set in place.... next step? glue the cockpit up into the already joined fuselage and then put the wings on!!! almost to the painting stage... and I cant wait to get there... it's my first USN Blue/Grey plane yet... so looking forward to figuring out the weathering on this thing...

looking forward to seeing everyone elses pics... me and Chris are starting to hog all the showtime haha...

thanks guys. pingtang, i think its just the pic, of course, it is a very dark sea blue, but i don't get too elaborate with progress pics. maybe one day i'll have enough room to leave a photo set up in place at all times.

thats a good idea about the misting water Tom, may be worth a try. later.

looks goof Chris! and yours soaked up less dust than mine! I am going to try something someone mentioned in another topic... I'm gonna mist around my work area with water before I paint next time.. see if that helps settle the dust down...

Your Corsair is looking good Chris. I have the same problem with gloss paints. Every time I do a gloss finish I have more problems with dust, it must just be more visible on gloss surfaces. The paint looks very dark (almost black), is it just the picture that makes it look so dark? The finish looks very smooth though.

well its been a while since I checked in here, great looking stuff so far everyone! as for me, I suffered from a little bit of airplane fatigue after my stealth build, so I did a T-34 for a change, and then felt like I could get into the Wildcat. just about done working on the undercarriage, wheels and cockpit. hopefully within a few days time I'll have some pics with actual progress visible, but for now I think theres not much to see. The roadblock I can see coming up at me is masking the tiny canopy with all that framework.
On another topic, the other night I was looking over what to do next and noticed that sweet Tamiya 48th F4U-1D sitting on my shelf... so maybe I'll dive into that one afterwards for this GB, who knows. it sure looks good in the box though, so much detail compared to the 72nd kits Ive been doing of late. Actually, quite a lot of detail even compared to most 1/48th kits! Anyways, I'll keep you posted!

well boys, this is the 3rd and final coat of MM Enamel Gloss Sea Blue on my F4U-5N. i'm still gonna coat her down with future before attempting the decals. i wish i would've bought flat Sea Blue, this gloss was a pain in the A--. is it me, or is dust just more attracted to glossy finishes?LOL MAN i got one spot that just seems to whistle to any dust bunny within 50 miles. later.

Yeah me and Saltydog are both building one, I am doing the dash-2 and he is doing the dash-3... I built the dash-5 previously and it is a charm to build... I think you will get a ton of enjoyment out of that kit! Especially the cockpit area, lots of detail withut being cramped and not too hard to get together.

General fit is real good too...

Merry Christmas!! Wink [;)]

Sounds great reggie- I hope your uncle shows up with the camera. Well, Christmas came early from the sweetie: Accurate Miniatures 1/48 SBD-5 and TBM-1C!!!! I think she did pretty good! I didn't even ask for them nor did she request a list. Apparenltly more is on the way- these came by way of Great Models. She won't tell me so I am hoping it'll be here soon. I think someone here is working on the SBD so I am hoping it is a good build, though it'll be a while before I get to them.

Daniel i said it before and i'll say it again Great buildThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]
I'm not sure which A/C i'm doing, there's only 2 different types on the decal sheet so i'll go with one of them, but i'll definately go with the tri colour scheme.....
One thing that suprised me was the size of it compared to the 109's and Spits i normally make, this thing is huge by comparison.....
Cheers jules.........

Mate, I don't mind at all, I appreciate the compliment. There is more pics of it on hyperscale if you want more pics. Are you doing the same aircraft or just the same tri-colour scheme? Good luck with your build.

Here's the pics of my Hellcat. I built it a few months ago but It's US Naval aviation so I''ll chuck it in. http://www.hsgalleries.com/gallery04/f6f3dk_1.htm
That's my contribution to the GB so far, now I've just gotta get past some exams and I'll have the corsair done.

LOL, Tom, you of all people should know how fanatical the Navy is about painting!! the ship i was assigned to had atleast 25 coats of paint on it by the time i left.!!

Stilll looking for it Chris, had to do some rehab on the computer over the weekend, was testing something for work and was lazy and decided to do it on *my* computer... everything went well until I tried to uninstall it...

anyway... I'll look for the pic... this was a WWII photo so the real thing... I know what you mean though... I remember how many nights I spent till 11pm on that @#%@ buffer making that floor shine... only to do it the next night... thats why I dont go for a lot of weathering on USN/USMC aircraft... I remember a Ch-46 kicked some FOD off the beach once and ruined its pretty paint job. There was Marine air crew up till about 0200 working on making it look right...

Well.... The corsair's just about ready for a priming. I've given the wheel wells and other areas a coat of micro-mask and am waiting for it to dry. I've still got a bit of wiring on the engine to do and a bit more sanding and I'll be ready to paint.

Jules- What scheme are you doing your Hellcat in? I'm interested because it's one of my favourite aircraft. I'm interested to see how your build goes.

Tom your work looks good to meThumbs Up [tup]i'm lookin forward to seeing everyones builds finished............
Speaking of pits after seeing Saltydogs 109 iv'e decided to give the Hellcat a rudimentary pit, reason being once it's all built with the canopy closed your not gonna see much of it at all, i wiil add a PE seat harness though......
And as far as weathering goes i'd like to keep it kinda clean maybe just dirty it up around the exhausts and guns.......Jules.....

I know the feeling scott, was there recently until I put the other kits back in the box, took a few days off and started the SBD build. I think I needed both less builds on the desk and a little more challenging of a build. I love those AM kits for that... especially the cockpit. I would love to see them do something like a Ju-88 with all that glass where you can really see th pit... it would look so nice. The Monogram Promodeler one isn't too bad and I know there is stuff out there for it, but AM makes em look nice and clean, just enough detail without clutter...

Nice progress on the SBD Tom. Looks like we should have an SBD build eh? I'm just about done with my 5 model for the AM build. Should just change it over to this one, that way I'm not so pressured to finish the Wildcat (although I really need another cat on my shelf, the other one sheds and breaks too many models). Anyway, I did a rather stupid thing. I'm doing the tri-color blues and after a week of painting, brought it up stairs and set it on the table and after a day or so looking at it, I began to get a strange feeling something wasn't right. Well, I forgot to paint the tail with intermediat sea blue.Banged Head [banghead]
So, back to the paint booth. This is what happens when I have too many commitments going on at the same time. At least I didn't forget to put the cockpit in it after closing up the fueslage like I did with my BF109 last summer.

I saw a good pic of exactly what you are wanting on that SBD... I'll see if I can find it and post it.. basically it would be reverse weathering... spray the blue grey or sea blue... put some liquid mask in a few places then NMF over it all and use tape to put a little of the NMF off in a few places.... thats how weathered this plane was... just a few specs of paint on her...

Tom, relax friend, non of us are "accomplished" modellers, we're here to have fun. your radio panel looks great, and the picture quality has improved as well!!Thumbs Up [tup] i feel your pain on the SBD pit, all that work and you can barely see any of it once the fuselage halves are joined. i'm gonna "wear" my SBD out!! i want it to look like she's on her last mission.........and she's showin' her age and what salt air and brutal sunshine can do over time. i want to focus on the dive flap system since it will be more visible. she's next in line after the corsair. later.

thanks brother!

been experimenting with this build, maybe I should have tried all this on a non GB build but I thought maybe this is best... go through all the new stuff so people can see it... I'm not an accomplished modeler by any means... but people can see the gist of some of the stuff I am doing and maybe take it for what it's worth!

Some of it has been kinda fun and I imagine when I perfect it (or get close) it will be worth its weight in salt!

cool! looking forward to it Chris! I'm having fits with the buckles on those seat belts so I might wait till another build because I am getting close to the painting and weathering phase too... the part I like...

here's a preview of the radio rack... after looking at it I might go back on a few areas and touch up but ya can't even see if inside so I might decide it's at a good stopping point...

---edit--- after looking at it a little I realized what's missing. I need to fill in the inside of those silver dials/meters with a whitish grey... the backs of dials aren't black... everytime I post a pic I see more to do!
