decals for RCAF 1 sqdn
Posted by jboutin on Friday, January 7, 2005 2:29 PM
Hey, here's a question for decal / marking experts.

I want to do a hurricane from RCAF 1 sqdn and I know the letter codes they used (YO*_) but I can't find any hurricane decals that have their codes, I just need the fuselage letters. Does anyone know of any aftermarket decals that would have the right size for 1:48 scale? I suppose I could paint them on but seeing as I am just getting back into modelling, that is probably beyond my skills at this point.

I've been looking all over the web and in some hobby shops close by (in Calgary AB, Canada) and can't find anySad [:(].

Maybe someone else here knows where to find some but failing that you could:

A) print your own by picking up a decal paper/kit from your LHS or
B) there is a guy here in Winnipeg at Spare Time Hobbies who will print them for you (for a modest fee). He has a web site http://www.sparetimehobbies.com/. I haven't used him myself but I hear his work is first rate.

Good luck!

You can get the decals you need from Decals Carpena and they are available from quite a few places. I'm not sure if you need the 24", 36" or 48" serials so check your references before ordering.
Here is the link to a place I have used in Australia a number of times. You can also get these from Hannants in the UK.

Thanks, darson and razordws, I'll look for decals carpena at one of the local hobby shops. I'll have to check on the size first though. I think for my first kit back, I'm going to try a basic OOTB build, from some of the reviews I've read, the Hasegawa kt is excellent for "in the box" details. I think I'm going try to get that kit.

Looking forward to building this.Tongue [:P]

darson, at the end, is there going to be pics posted of everybody's finished aircraft?

Hi all…

Here is my kit I’m using for this build. After I finish my current project I’ll be able to jump in and start with you guys. I will probably start on Wednesday maybe sooner. Cool [8D]

jboutin, I have the Hase Mk.I Hurricane and it's a really nice kit. If I get the Spitfire done in time and I'm not up to my lower lip in other projects I might just do that for this build as well. About the only issue with the kit is there are some fairly prominent ejector pin marks in the wheel well that would be very difficult to remove. Aside from that it's a great kit.

As to posting pics of everybody’s builds, I certainly hope so. I want to see lots of progress pics and then see the finished product when it's done, but it's up to people to post their own pics for everybody to see.

Cheers

those who don't post pics are weenies.... er.. well that's what Tweety said, in case you wanna get mad and beat someone up or something Wink [;)]

Well got the cockpit in, exhausts on, just waiting till the AM to put the fuselage on the wings and I will post some more pics... gotta look at some more resources for the underside color of my aircraft.. some say sky blue, some say sky gray... one ref says the sea gray didnt start till very late 40/early 41 the other earlier... I will see what I can find, if nothing else I will paint it with what I have..

I *do* have to get the sky for the tail stripe... (duck egg green) a little detail but I wanna get the paint right...

for this model the overall looks are what is important, not the interior.. (you cant see the interior without a flashlight and magnifiers anyway so doubt I will ever do interior PE on this one)

BTW: for those who joined late I am talking about my martlet...

I got it around 2 months ago, and have used it very little to be honest.
The missus went a little nuts, considering I already have 3 SLR's, (love film!)

ok Sean, I looked it up and it's a decent cam indeed! you should be able to do macro from about 10cm...

(not to sound like the missus, but....) did you read the manual? you need to set it to macro mode, then WITHOUT the zoom, all the way tight in to the least (zero) zoom move the camera in on the subject till you are as close as you wanna be... might throw a shadow on the kit but as long as it doesnt darken what you wanna show you are ok...

press the button to autofocus then shoot! Plenty of light and a steady hand are good for this!

if it has trouble focusing then it needs more light... also, try cropping the pic to just include the subject (like your instrument panel) it automatically blows it up for ya... brings it in real close.. I will see if I can download the manual tomorrow and read on it... the camera itself is ok!

I will crop your instrument panel pic tonight or tomorrow and show you what I mean...

---edit---

ok here is yours:

and the one I just cropped:

darson, Ultracast makes a really nice resin replacement for the Hasegawa Hurricane wheel bays. Gets rid of those Censored [censored] injector pin marks.

Thanks for the advice on the camera, I will give that a go soon.
And whats this about 'reading the instruction manual'Question [?]
I dont wanna hear anymore nonsense about reading stuff, ok.

Geez, like there'd be any info I could use in it anyways................................Tongue [:P]

Well, tonight I am doing the camo scheme on the 109 so hopefully it will turn out looking good first go.
(pfft, yeah right!!)
Gonna paint up the radiator grills and other external bits in the mean time, and I even had a thought of trying to paint on the black cross, just for s***s and giggles.

Rick You beat me too it, I was just going to recommend the Ultracast part! I'm about to order that and the replacement seat, and flight surfaces from Ultracast, and having read the reviews on Hyperscale, I'm really looking forward to using them.

I did a dry run with the Hurricane last night, and all the parts fit beautifully, I can't see there being much need of filler with this kit!

I got your email Jules, and sent the info to ya.
Thanks again

Darren, ta for the pics. One of them shows alot of detail as far as the weathering goes on the front cowl, around the oil cooler.
And that Hurricane would have been a pig to fly with that much damageShock [:O]

Sean, you sound like me... always wanting to try this or that... not sure about hand painting insignia for me yet tho... these old hands are a bit shaky... and don't worry about reading that manual... once you're through breaking the missus' camera, she'll need it to whack you around with... Wink [;)]

Karl and Rick, reading about that reminded me... usually one of the parts I like least in a kit is the seat... I may have to invest in a set for the next kit I do to see how it works...

Hope you're feeling better Rick!

Thanks heaps Rick and Karl, but I already have the Ultracast Wheel well replacement as well as their Hurricane seat with armor plate (I'm a bit of an Ultracast junkie actually).

Darren I've not used Ultracast before, but looking at that seat online this morning, it looks truly stunning. I especially like the molded on harness and hose, as me and PE belts just do not seem to get along!

The Hase wheel bay is a real dog's dinner, what on earth were they thinking of when they designed that mold?

I look forward to receiving the Ultracast bits in the post, having ordered them this morning along with the right paints, I know mine's a night fighter and therefore mainly black, but being predominantly a Luftwaffe builder I don't possess such things as Interior Green!

Ok, got the o2/71 camo applied to the fuse and tailplanes (which are just sitting there, not glues yet)

Yes they are blurry, I had a dog of a day today, so I just pointed and snapped.
But, it's now drying in the booth after being Pledged, and hopefully Sunday will start out a better day than Saturday. If it does, then I will try the rest of the camo along the side.
Fingers crossed.

Looking good Tweety. Nice progress. I got the basic painting done on the pit for my 109 & waiting for it to cure before detailing & weathering. Since these AC hadn't been in service for very long, will probably not do much heavy weathering.

Good point Rick.
I first thought weathering would be pretty extensive given the amount of fly time these planes would have had during BoB, but it wouldn't have been to severe.
Maybe some heavy exhaust stains and cordite burns, but thats it.

One thing that is certain about the 109's, they leaked oil something fierce!

Apparently, after about 1 month of use, they just started belching out oil, and it would leak from the rear section of the cowl, all the way to the tail wheel.
Not very environmentally friendly!

Looking good Sean! I'm hopeful to have mine to that stage tomorrow. today I got the fuselage joined and am working on the engine now.. will stick the cowl on then it's time to paint!!! Party [party]Party [party]Party [party] I'm hoping to get the base coat down tonight so by tomorrow evening I can get the camo on... after that by Fri I should be finished (even though it's only a few parts after this, I dont have much time during the week.

Going to finish up some on the SBD in a little while...

got the fever for my Martlet right now tough... a really enjoyable build! Also a recommended build for new to intermediate builders... not a whole lot of parts, most of the detail is molded in versus small parts... but enjoyable and detailed enough to look good!

in the middle of my engine now... need to coat the ignition wires a bit more for coverage and touch up some overpainting I did... a 10/0 brush and a size 10 hand don't mix well at times Wink [;)]

got the body primered so should be dry for the bottom sky gray tonight, left port wing special night tomorrow morning and hopefully the upper overcoat tomorrow, camo will have to get done some time during the week...

Hey folks, I'm just new to the forums (okay, well, as a poster, been lurking for a bit) and amm interested in getting involved in this group build. I've never done one before, but the deadline's gonna be good for me :)

Like jboutin, I too want to do a 1 Sqn RCAF Hurricane, only in 1/72. As I'm using the Airfix kit, I was wondering if anyone might have some after market recommendations (Does Ultracast make the resin parts in 1/72?) for the Hurricane Mk I--I can't find any at Squadron.com.

Very cool work BTW folks, I hope that I can make mine look half as good as the rest of you ;)

hey Whytwolf, (would call ya Sean but the other Sean gets all red and throws things when someone tries to join a GB and has the same name as his... other than that he has a heart of gold Wink [;)])

(last time he set his Bf-109 on fire and threw it in the neighbors driveway) Shock [:O]

I checked on greatmodels.com as well and only saw ultracast in 1/48 for AC... I am interested in trying out some of their stuff as well after my two esteemed modeling friends here gave such good reviews of it...

the only thing I was able to find for you was from Jaguar, who I haven't used before but perhaps someone here has.. it is the resin detail setr for the cockpit in 1/72... looked pretty good from the pic! it is set: ja67202 Hawker Hurricane, just cut and paste that and search on greatmodels.com it will pull it up for ya! It's in stock too, which means it will ship almost immediately to ya!

Welcome!!! And looking forward to your build! Post some pics! (Just watch out for the other Sean...) Wink [;)]

Rick, it's not that I am that far ahead of ya... this kit just went together really fast.. now I understand why it was so inexpensive for a Tamiya... not that it lacks in detail so much but there is less parts than the Corsair I built awhile back... my next one whichever it is won't be as easy I am sure... probably the Hasegawa He-111.

Razor, thanks! the engine looks ok, it is a LOT smaller than I am used to trying to detail... not as good as the one on the Accurate Miniatures SBD, which has about 6 pieces to it versus 2.... (including seperate wiring harness which made it easier not to slop red paint on the cylinders like I did on this one) I am really looking forward to the painting on this one.. it's going to be interesting to see this aircraft in another countries clothes! a reall focus point mixed in with my WWII USN collection...

Hi Whytwolf. Airwaves do a nice kit for the Airfix Hurricane, including a replacement seat. I have one sitting in my 'to-do box', and it looks quite good, although a lot of folding. It even includes a PE seat! I haven't build it yet though.
