AIRCRAFT - 'It Floats and Flies Group Build' - Feb 1st 2005 to Sept 30 (Gotta finish sometime!)

I've never seen a 'twin' otter. This is looking good.

I'm going to have close my fuselage to the mavis with a missing control wheel. I busted one trimming it off the tree and busted even more trying to fix it. It was a real
' ARGGGGH!' moment. I've spent the last 3 days trying to do micro-surgery on a part a few millimeters across. Enoughs, enough. I'm closing the halves tonight so I can at least mount the wing assembly by the weekend.

Oh yeah, that Otter is looking to be very interesting.

Looks like the Twin Otter is taking shape very nicely. Keep us posted.

So after a long delay, here's some progress on the Matchbox DeHavilland Twin Otter. To this point, assembly has gone pretty good except that there's been a fair bit of puttying to do on the engine nacelles and the wing/fuselage joints. However, I was quite pleased that the floats assembled to the fuselage without any fuss at all.

I was gonna post pics of my completed(?) Seiran and voice my depression that it turned out pretty bad frankly. Then I read RODC's post and realize that a crappy model isn't such a bad thing. RODC - my most sincere sympathy to you and your family, and I join Rick in supporting you in prayer.
Instead of posting a number of pics, I'll just post a few to proove that I've done it. This was one of those kits that I started with the highest asperations but nothing seemed to go right. I'm not happy with the fit, colors, or cockpit - other than that it is okay!

It has been a while since I posted anything regarding my CL215 build for IFFGB but my family has had quite a tragedy this week with the loss of my 15 year old son to a hit and run driver. He was just getting into building kits, mostly auto (ironically) when he was taken from us.

I want to continue my participation but I will obviously be taking a hiatus to spend time with my wife.

The Walrus came out nice. How'd you train the fish to perch on top of the wing?

Well while my closest Home Dept carries porc-a-fill, there wasn't any in stock. I've got 2 more Home Depot in my area to check out. I just got a new memory card for my camera so I'll get some 'as-of-now' pictures of the Mavis up by the weekend.

While I've been fiddeling with a scratch built radio set up for the cockpit, I just may can it since after a test fist of the fuselage halves and canopy, it's barely visible (and would be even more so once the frames are painted). I'm just not happy with the scratch made radio dials I made for it so I'll give it one more shot before I decide to close up the fuselage halves.

Here are links to the 1/72 Matchbox (1973) Walrus MK-1 model I have built.

(My first ever model!!)

After researching the Walrus, I became aware that most of the manufacturers of the Walrus model and minature kits are inaccurate because of the natural 2degree angle of the push-power Bristol Pegasus engine. Model and minature manufacturers of the Walrus have never allowed for the engine mounting at the correct angle.

With this said, (even though the Matchbox kit is not entirely accurate), due to my inexperience in model making, I ended up with the engine on an angle anyhow.

I also have not wandered into the 'rigging' world of this aircraft, for the same reasons as Harrowbeer.

Wow! I've sure missed a lot in the last couple of weeks! Harrowbeer, that Walrus looks fantastic and Rob, you're making fine progress on that Mariner! Those Mach2 kits sure provide lots of modeling "pleasure" don't they. Anyhow, you're really bringing it together nicely! I have a Mach2 AJ Savage that I've been working on for two years and have only gotten to the stage you're at.
As for my own project, the Twin Otter floatplane, it really isn't any farther along than the last time I checked in but I'm just finishing another GB so I'll have more time available. Between work, the fire dept and the gym, bench time has been at a premium the last little while.

I plan on getting some tonight to give it a try on the 'Mavis'. How much was it and does it come in a tube or a tub?

I haven't come across any pieces that have actually fit together. Every piece has required more than the usual sanding and filling. The nose turret was a nightmare and I am still not 100% satisfied with it but it will have to do, especially since I already CA'd it in(along with my finger :). I'll try and get some close up shots of the rear stabilizer to show some of the holes that need putty. This will sound wierd but it is actually the most enjoyable kit I have built regardless of the problems. I know when I finish it and give it to my grandpa he will be blown away with it.

Looks good, Rob. Seeing it with the wings on realky makes me consider the Mach 2 kit. Let us know how ugly it's been (if it has) with fit problems and all.

a little suggestion, if u don't mind...
maybe use a panoramic camera 2 take the background shot next time,
then u can have a nice curved background instead of the seam between

I should have more pics of my PBM by later this evening. Fixed the nose turret to the best of my ability. I have most of the plane temporarily assembled and held with weak glue and tape so I can see what I need to fill. I also need to go searching through posts in the "airplane" section. What else do people use to fill seams besides squadron putty? It's been working very well for me but I remember someone else used some kind of porcelin(?) filler or something similair?
