G'day Folk's,

I'm still here, after sorting out our website design and the other things that we are involved in, Having built the aircraft in the fore ground of this photo for the RAAF OTS.

I'm doing another of these DB-7a's, but this time it's for a decal project for a similar aircraft coded 'G' George, but the name on the aircraft was 'Japanese Ghost Producer'
Sadly the aircraft was lost

Also
Roy did the emailed pix arrive

Guy's,

I haven't been slack, or snowed under with countless models to complete, I've been loosing a bit more of whats left on top, in the last week and a bit, I have been working close to 10 hours a day on our website, thanks to one of my fellow 'Pirates are Us' aka 150man, who is about to be short changed to 1.50 man. The site is not up and running as yet, it is still in the editing stage, as the stuff from Glen, fell off. I have to get him to reformat it so it will stay on the page. Yes Joe this may get him off the nest and onto the net, sooner.

Jason,

I sent an e-mail re the decals.

Roy,

What is the site you posted your pix on

Jason,

I have some 48 scale Dauntless Decals that I don't need.

The kit decals are for the Hasegawa SBD-3's of:
VS-2
VS-5
VS-41

All from the Pacific. As I have built but not finished this model as an A-24 Banshee, that was based in Darwin Australia in early 1942.

Build the Ki-46 Dinah, it looks good.

Paul: the SBD looks great! I can't wait to see it finished.

Lobbie: interesting builds. That Duck with the crane must have been a lot of work.

Jason: I would say build them all but I wouldd do the Dinah Ki 46 first just because it is something different. Lot of glass to mask though.

Gdarwin: looking forward to those pics.

Rob, thanks for the complements. I am pretty happy with progress to date. A bit of learning has been had - thats what each model should be Wink [;)].

I am happy with the decal placement for the other decals - its just the placement of the wing decals that I am unsure of their accuracy.

Thanks for the offer of other RNZAF aircraft as well. I may well take you up on that in the future. My next build if the Catalina, but I was sent SP48-10 paint guide and decals for that one, so sitting pretty sweet for the next couple of months, thanks.

cossack the dauntless looks good so far. I have the AM sbd-3 but have to find some am decals for it and it is not going well.
Lobbie the gun and duck are very nicely done.

I would like to take a poll on what to build next.
1- 1/72 ki-46 hasagewa
2-1/48 F4-F tamiya
3-AM sbd-3 dauntless

Paul,

Your SBD is excellent so far, as with the AeroMaster SP48-10, what info do you need for the Dauntless ? just the decal placements ot other info ?.
What other Kiwi stuff are you looking for as I have some wartime B&W shots of RNZAF birds here also.

Here are some realy interesting models, these are modified from current kits to Aussie wartime specs, these models are not mine, they belong to a friend [who built the small Chev truck], from the Tamiya LRDG Chev kit, these are the only pix I have of these models, to me these models show a great deal of pride, effort and determination for a person with a handicap.

OK ... public holiday (Australia Day) gives some good time to catch up a little - especially in the posting department!!.

The SBD is nearing completion of the paint job at least. I am have a little minor assembly to do, but thought these pics would show you quite the way I have attacked this build.

As you can see, I am missing the main canopy. Through Robs help, this is being recovered as I type. I have also tried dry-fitting all the canopies - I want to assemble with the rear and main canopies open. The fit is very tight, so I might actually exclude one of the rear canopies so I can make it all fit together.

Next step will be Futuring, decalling, and some minor weathering. This particular aircraft actually did not see a lot of action, so it won't be fully brow beaten. But some panel enhancement, and I also want to try some exhaust staining (some to play with with the new airbrush Wink [;)]).

Just as a quick question - if anyone has the Aeromaster SP48-10 they may be able to help ... Hasegawa show RNZAF roundels on both upper wing surfaces, but other kits I have seen show them on just one (port side) only. Can anyone elaborate?

Many thanks ...

Paul,

I've not looked at the kit as yet, I can say that it's boxing was 1973, when I do get to check the kit I'll let you know, as to what my thoughts are.
On another note, the Trumpeter kit of the Spitfire is a newer moulding and it is not a copy of the airfix kit, as most people had originally thourght.

I'll update this post with my so called review of the hurricane

Lobbie,

Will be interested in your thoughts on the Airfix Hurricane - I have the 1/24 Airfix Spitfire coming, so quality is top of my mind at the moment.

Guy's,

I've been slack in the model building side over the last 2 weeks, it seems the management side of my organization started earlier than planned, along with the introduction of another set we now have running. I've been adding the finishing touches to our 'new' website, which we hope will be online in the next couple of days.

We started on two projects in September last year, with two different manufacturer's, both of which have almost completed their masters and artwork. so alass the modelling had been shelved because of this.

On a modelling note I was given 4 x 1/24 scale aircraft kits, they are the Mk I Hurricane and Bf 109e from Airfix, a Bandi type 52 Zero, the 5c version and an Fw 190 A3/F5 from MPC. I think I've been told [by the person who gave them too me], here these are for you, sit and build them.

Roy,

The weathering techineque could be used on any model subject, only thing about the remark towards Tamiya, is because we had some laying around the shop at the time, [left over from various repairs, when I was working there], you should be able to use any spray paint can or even sprayed through an airbrush.

With WW II armour I'd use a dark metalic [like gun metal] as the base coat, in relation to the Lvt 4. My sujestion would be the gum metal colour as a base coat and work from there, once the top cam and decals are finished and sealed, just apply your interpretation of the chipping effect.

I know in the days when I drove M113's, the scratches and stuff we got in most places along the sidewalls, would show the aluminium base metal. The heavier the tree branch the more scratches and sometimes the bow plate would show signs of wood showing where the paint had been scracth off.

Wethering Techineque of Catalina aircrfat:

This was how I did the weathering to the 'Cat' apply the silver base coat and let dry over night, mixed my Black paint for the lower main wing and fuselage on a 1 to 1 basis, when this was finished, both the Grey and Blue cam was applied again mixed too the same ratio and left until the paint was touch dry to handled, I then applied the decals to the model, using a decal solvent to sit them down, once that was dried, I then rubbed the Black from the lower wing with an emery board.

With the fuselage I repeated the same rubbing principals to both the paint and decaled area's, then repeated the same process on the upper main wing, I used an Acrylic thinner to wash the model of excess shavings from the emery board and applied a coat of Dullcoat to the entire model, when that was dry I them used a medium grey pastel for the canvas area, of the main wing and a darker grey black mix for the canvas on the tailplanes and rudder, the exhausts stains are amix of black red brown and dark grey pastels, I then sealed the pastels with a sealer [workable fixative spray - most artist supplies sell this spray sealer].

Applied the Dullcoat to the model and allowed to dry before fixing the trailing antenia array, from wingtip to rudder to opasite wingtip and from centre main wing to rudder.
The PBY Catalina model I had built, was based on this this wartime photo, as this was the instruction of the Officer Training School, this model was built for.

I've heard of modeller's using salt as a weathering technique, but I have never tried it on any of my model subjects.

Hope this helped a little.
