Leon,

Nice pix of the Wildcat, [maybe we could do an Atlantic GB, that covered a large area of the conflict].

Have you tried Squadron for these decals ?

I found it!! Hannants has them. The link http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=8TM48050. I have never ordered from them or from overseas. Is it a hard thing to do? (money exchange and all)

And a picture.

Also, I appologize because we have ventured into the wrong ocean here, but here are the best two pictures I could find on the VC-13 squadron's wildcats. Right now I am thinking of doing an avenger and a wildcat from the squadron and placing then on a carrier deck.

Hope all is well with everyone. I am at the painting point with my buffalo. (Sadly, I am not very proud of the build I have doneSad [:(] )

G'day,

Bob,

Nice Wildcat progress, I helped a friend do a 72 Academy in the Atlantic Scheme, I can get some sideviews from him if you need them.

Leon,

Some Tamiya kits have decals that are so thick they don't look anything like decals, just painted paper, AM decals are a safer way for Tamiya and some Hasegawa kits.

I've been MIA on other projects in the past few weeks, with a local decal producer and with the Italeri Company, so much for retirering, for the A20b/c Havoc/Boston, yes the old OOP AMT kit is comming back under the Italeri name in the second quarter of 2006.
Along with another 2 P-40's for the P-40 GB, both in Middle East region and different bases. One is a P-40b in RAF 112 Sqn markings, the other is a P-40f in RAAF 3 Sqn markings when based on Malta.

The wildcat looks great Bob. That Tamiya kit is sweet. I, too, have one in the 'future build' pile to wear the atlantic scheme. I am trying to find decals with the little cat giving the bird (I think it is vc-13 and I know I saw it somewhere online, but I just can't remember where).

Lobbie-Great work on the Jill. Very impressive.

Landing gear is on the Wildcat-I definatly needed the assist of reading glasses & extra light. Tricky, but this Tamiya is such a fun build and with so many variations (thinking Atlantic paint scheme next time) there will be others.

Still need to mask & paint the canopy, weather the landing gear and get some dull coat on the wheels & tires.

Jason,

Thanks for the kind words on the 'Rex' and 'Jill'. As for the wing fold it's as per kit option of folded or level flight, the 3 hinge points on each wing have 2 p caps for the centre hinge to fit into, the braces the wings sit on gave a problem when securing the wings.
A/. Nowhere to hold model when attaching wings.
B/. Can't see where to fit wing braces.

But the build went well enough for the project and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

G'day Folk's,

Thanks,

Bob and Roy for the kind words on the builds.

The "JILL" is completed, as this Hasegawa kit has an optional weapons load of either the Torpedo or the Bomb Rack, [interchangable by means ofpoly caps], the undercarriage is also held into the wing by meands of poly caps. The entire model is OOB, complete with folded wings. The enamels are from the Xtra Colour range of IJN paints, the yellow theatre band is cut from a Yellow decal sheet.

the model:-

Bob,

The Tamiya re-issued kits and in some cases their newer kits have decals that are thicker [almost as thick as the backing paper], I tend to susitute them whenever posible, it's just the minor hickup that Tamiya's printing system for decals leaves us with countless applications of decal solution to make them sit properly.

On another note I've been approached by a Decal Manufacturer [the new owner of Hawkeye Decals], here who plans to expand his decal range into RAAF W.W. II subjects, this particular decal company produce their decals so thin they seldom need decals solutions applied to them.

Thanks guy's for the kind words on the Martlet, I plan to build a couple more in the near future.

I have often wondered about this. Ever since my first Tamiya kit (corsair) and incredible difficulty with the decals, I have gone with aftermarket. It is too bad that such amazing kits can't have great decals too. Your wildcat looks great, though, and it seems that your extra work with the decal solution worked.

Lobbie, love the martlet. They look very cool and I too want to do one after seeing yours and some others posted on the site. The kingfisher looks great too!

Lobbie-nice Martlet. I have two Ultracast seats (order was late so I used PE belts) for the F4F, so I might just have to build a Martlet in the future. Actually, no doubt about- I'll have to commit to one here in the near future.

Bob,

I did my F4f-4 as a RNFAA Martlet V a sub patrol aircraft in the Bay of Biscay [Royal Navy] Gibraltar Convoy prtection, as the undercarriage is assembled prior to it being fitted to the fuselage, the lower bracing was the fit problem on mine.

I've added some pix of what mine turned out like.

I read you used a lot of decal solvent on your bird. Did you use the Tamiya kit decals ?.

Bob,

Nice progress on the Wildcat so far, I also had encounted a fit problem with the undercarriage legs on my Martlet

Here are a few pix of the RAAF's 3 OTU Kingfisher.

I have yet too put the yellow bands on the black underwing band.

Wildcat has been Future'd, decaled & Futured again. Tamiya decals were a handful to work with-had to use enough Solvaset to melt duct tape....

Ended up going with a F4F off the carrier Enterprise for the Battle of Midway.
Also, found a different antenna in the kit-doesn't appear to be as long as the one I lost, but it will have to do for now. Still need to work on the landing gear, wheels/tires & mask/paint the canopy, along with an oil wash...maybe...

Thanks all. With a little luck, I'll get the Wildcat Future'd this weekend and maybe an oil wash next week...if I get brave enough. I've always used either acrylic wash or pastel chalks before.

Jason,

Thanks, I'd been getting most of my Axis birds info especialy on IJA/IJN from the website, on these types.

I have this idea of another Mk XXI Beaufighter, to put into model form shortly, pending some help:

Some months back I was approached by a decal company asking me for help in extending their decal range to include almost all RAAF W.W. II birds, the idea is to include my resin components to their decals.

This is something I painted while waiting for something else to dry and the sideviews of the aircraft I am basing my model on.

Rob your welcome. Its funny to think that I can help someone with the skills you have. The book is called Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific war. and it covers all planes with lots of photos. It is really amazing how few are chipped in the way people like to model them.

Bob,

Very nice Wildcat, I like the scheme you painted [did a similar scheme to a Kingfisher], nice detail you added.

Jason,

Thanks for the info on the 'Frank' I have the Tamiya kit of this bird in the stash.

Bobbaily The wildcat looks great the color came out nice. I love your paint stand.
Leon the kit is 48th it went together great the only word of caution is that on the real ones the flaps where in the closed postion while they were parked, but it looks neater in the opened. Here is a pic of a real one sitting on the ground from my book.

Bob, The wildcat looks good. I really like the lego base :-)

Jason, I like the frank. Is it the 1/48 scale. I just picked that one up a week or so ago. Any words of caution / advice on it?

Made some more progress on the Wildcat. Engine done, paint applied. Not brave enough let to add white/blue-grey mix to 'fade' the finish-will do that with chalk pastels later. Lost the radio antenna somewhere.....such is life....
