I made the mistake of visiting the IPMS Nationals in Telford UK, today. I visited the Airfix stall and saw what they had done to the Hawk, straight from the box. It was okay, but only that. I then saw one someone had built with the Neomega resin cockpit set...outstanding.
I decided that I would invest in the resin, my thinking being that I can enjoy spending the time on the painting and getting the outside of the kit looking right.
So there it is I've bought the resin...out with the razor saw and on with the build.
Thanks guys!

fiasco... One of my favorite quotes is "build what you like, like what you build" I myself have only recently started trying to detail my models and have been for along time an OOB builder. If the kit was a POS the my build reflected that. So far Ive only done things like use fishing line for antennas, scratch building some antennas and using a bent needle to replace an ejection handle. All these little things while being little made a big difference in my opinion how the model looked and boosted my confidence as a modeler. Im not one of the modelers who think companies are making things too easy for us and still pray for shake and bake kits when I buy them but if you can see obvious room for improvement, have the talent to do it Id say go for it. You feel better about the build in the end and the thus "like what you build"

Fiasco I'm building my F-84 pretty much out of the box just adding a little detail using bits of plastic and wire. You could make some belts using tape and wire for buckles.
When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

Well, I've started on the 1/48 Red Arrows Hawk.
I've put the ejection seats together. What a disappointment, poor fit, no harnesses. I'm really tempted to get an AM set but the cost is prohibitive.
Question is do I go all out and add the extra detail or straight out the box?
I know if I start adding detail it'll take me ages to complete, but will I be satisfied as is?
What do you guys think I should do?

Mkhoot, if the rest of the plain looks as good as the office area, I cant wait. I wish I had the skill to detail a cockpit like that.

Hey guys...wondering if I can join the build. This will be the first time I've join a group build....it should be fun...looks like you guys are already having fun!

I'm going for 2 kits. First will be the 1/72 Has. Blue Angels F/A-18. It will be OOB, but I will be building a matching Gundam robot...more on that later. Second kit will be a Canadain Golden Hawks kit...my wife was in Toronto years ago and I build this kit. I loved it...it got destroyed in a move and I recently found the same kit again, so I'm really looking forward to it. I will post pics as I get them done. I'll probably start on the Blue Angels kit sometime after the Christmas holiday. Glad this one is open-ended! LOL!

Later,
Taz

EDIT: Hey! I got the badges to work...that took a while, but I got it! I swiped the Sabre badge, I hope you don't mind! It is perfect...I love the box art from that kit!

Just started mine today also. Building Revell F-84 as a Skyblazers plane from 1952. Kit looks nicely detailed should be a fairly simple build.
When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

I got started on my kit today. Mostly inspecting peices and seeing what Im gonna have to do. This kit is terrible. Lotsa flash, Injector pin marks every where, thin poor quality plastic, lack of detail. POS decals... This kits only saving grace will be that by dry fitting it seems to go together well. How I dont know. The fuselage is broken down into 6 PIECES!!! 2 nose, 2 main body and 2 tail....
I think Im gonna go ahead and do Revells 1/72 Red Arrow at the same time I do this one. I eventually plan to build all 9 arrows and try and do em in an inflght formation.

DJ, did you get the email with my snail mail addy's?

mkhoot, I made two badges for you so you can pic. I used the photo you posted as I have a feeling this may have some kind of sentimental value for you? if not I have another pic I like more. Its up to you. No sore feelings if you dont like the one I used. I can wait to see this one built :)

No worries Maikong sadly my current job puts infront of a computer alot more than Id care to be with little to do but surf the net. This is actually kinda fun for me. Now if I could only convince my NCOIC that I would be more productive building models at work. The badge is further back in the thread where I posted the others.

Awood23,
Thanks for the offer! Maybe a lot of work for you to do it for everyone? Here's the best I can do.

If its too much for you, I'll be happy to generate my own using your theme.

The toss up between Sabre and Vampire. Both aircraft are appealing.

Welcome, John! You're "viewing experience" goes back a long time, early '70s by all accounts! I wish I had seen the Blues with their A-4..! Looking forward to seeing your Hornet...

Hey Fellow Aerobatic GBers,
Please include me in with Hasegawa's 1/48 F/A-18A in Blue Angel markings. I've seen the Blues and the Thunderbirds from Phantoms to A-4s and T-38s to F/A-18s and F-16s. Haven't had the pleasure of seeing any of the foreign teams, but I'll bet they're great! Looking forward to this build!
Thanks, John

This is the kit I'm contemplating...

Frems' 1/48 Aermacchi MB339 PAN..

(view of the side of the box)

It looks good in the box, the only concern being, maybe, panel lines that are a bit deep.. If you're interested, I've found this short review of the kit in the Frecce Tricolore markings:

Tankamaster, Feb is as fine as anytime in this GB. There's no finish date... It could go on forever.. Mwoaaaaahahaha!

Fiasco, yes that Tiger Meet F-16 comes to mind. Revell had it in its catalogue both in 1/72 and 1/48, I believe... Daco Products have a number of decal sheets for other 'anniversary' Belgian Air Force Mirages, F-16, F-104, Alpha Jets, C-130, SeaKings,...

Alas, I have the perfect model for this GB, but unfortunately I have other models that need to be built first. But if I could start in like feb. mebbe I could join. When is the start and finish dates for this thing? (BTW I would theoretically and hypothetically be building a mig-29 from the Ukrainian flight demo team. If I was joining that is. Which I want to but can't.)

Yes, the ones that spring to mind immediately are the F-16 Tigermeet schemes.

Didn't someone manufacture a kit of this? Was it Revell?

Yeah, the Russian Knights are perfect for this! Join in whenever you feel like it, Tankmaster!

Coming from a smaller country, I've seen how budget cuts can affect Aerobatic Teams... The Belgian Red Devils have been gone for years and all the Belgian Air Force can really afford is the odd special decoration for such or such anniversary. Having said that, there's been quite a few of those over the years..!

Sentiment comes second to budget. Just look at the Black Watch Regiment in Iraq. UK government are threatening to merge them with other Scottish regiments, but they're quite happy to send them to the front line...makes you think!
Slightly off topic...sorry
Tankmaster, I reckon the Russian Knights would fit in this GB just fine.
