Ooops, sorry Joe, I just saw your post. I've consigned the Rot Komet to the spares bin, but thanks for your kind words. I learnt a lot about speed building from this build. If nothing else, use acrylics! Also, I realised that you just can't speed up sanding, it does take time and patience. Oh yes, and don't try and scratch detail a kit when your speeding, it just takes too long!

OK, well, this kit has taken me far far longer than I imagined! It's been fun, but, well, I've proven to myself that time is in short supply (except when waiting for enamels to dry that is, then time goes slowwwww)

As I didn't get beyond cockpit stage on the 24 hours, I added PE seatbelts (which really are worth it), repainted the cockpit, and filled in the gap behind the pilot. In prep for painting the wing roots were filled and sanded, and the panel gaps re-scribed.

However, the canopy behind the pilot just looks awful. Mine refused to sit properly, and now it's painted, it looks terrible (basically, paint can either mask or magnify problems). I think this plane will be put into the 'repairs or spares' box. The canopy was masked with Maskol.

Anyway, this is my last update report for this GB, and the last straggler signs off!

Here is a close up of the canopy that confounded me!

OK, so my joke of 24 days, not 24 hours seems to be about to be realised! Due to work commitments modelling midweek is difficult, and the weekends always are too short. Anyway, I'm going to try and 'Klear/Future' the canopies tonight, mask them, and attach, using Clearfix. Also, reattach the wings (yep, they came off). Assuming all goes well, it'll be ready for a first coat! Pictures soon...

Speaking of coats and decals, I went to my storage area, and there staring at me was the Heller kit, with the right decals for the red Komet. Cool!

Thing that gets me is this: I allow hours between each coat, and always apply two coats. The cockpit alone took ages because of this. I use enamels, I guess this means only acrylics for Mad builds?

Hey Calvin, don't worry about posting your pics. The camera has a wonderful way of hiding all of our mistakes (well most of them anyway). You didn't see any pics of the underside of my model now did you? There is a reason for that Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]!

Even so we all start somewhere and we can all appreciate something for what it is.

I hope to have my Komet pics up by the end of the week. Borrowed a cam from by bud but it's a newer version & my old sony cybershot cable doesn't hook up to the new one! Awesome looking models, everyone! I kinda dread posting pics of this hack that I got! - Calvin

update: I finally got the digital pics to the photobucket.Party [party] Unfortuately doesn't have the fully complete Komet but the one pic of the reputty gives you guys 'n gals an idea of what I had been up against!Evil [}:)]Tongue [:P]

I miss my own Cybershot! LOL - Calvin

You're not the only one! The missing section behind the pilot, and the large gaps at the wing root (plus a lack of time), are all proving a bit of a slow down. Is there a perfect kit, that needs no alteration or filler at all? Still, it will be nice to see everyone's completed Komets. Maybe someone who is good with Paintshop (or whatever) can make them into a collage?

Thank you for your comments frostygirl! I'm glad you liked 'cause I really enjoy ed building it! That's the neat thing about the Komet. No two are exactly alike, or so it seems. I can't wait for the next Mad Aircraft Day, whenever it happens. Thanx for re-posting my pics for me, too.Big Smile [:D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, I completely missed my first and second deadlines! Of course, without my decals (which I ordered though!) I can not complete the build... I did work on the cockpit and have started modifying a 1/87 Preiser figure. It fits real good in that little cockpit. A bit of Milliput here and there to change it from civilian guise to a German test pilot gear and I'll be OK.

Update: model is assembled, mostly! I'm not happy with the gap on the underside of the mainplane to the fuselage, so out with filler. I also need to build the angled bits behind the pilot.

Update on my build. The little pest is on it's wheels and all detail painting is done but I still don't have any swastikas for it. It really looks incomplete without them.

OK, here is the update. I have redone the cockpit, and added in some PE seatbelts (just those on the back of the seat). They're from a bf-109 set (see the BoB GB), but as they cover a later series bf-109, and look similiar to the Scottish bf-163, I think they are the same. The PE is from Airwaves, who always give extra. The colours are Humbrol 41 Ivory for the cloth, and a silver pen for the metal. The fuselage has been superglued and sanded, whilst the wings used normal glue. Unfortunately, there is quite a gap between the wings and the body, so, leaving that for later. Also for later are the rear section, and the canopy. I might add in the missing dividers behind the pilot, as per the original, made from plastic sheet. Anyway, here is my Komet to date. I think the PE belts really set the cockpit off nicely.

Yep, beautiful, Dave, just beautiful!

Osher, you have a nice cockpit there!

Have started adding my decals; lots of little stencils on this kit! However, I have no svastikas, and the kit's wing crosses do not suit me, so I'll have to order some. Blast!

While I wait, I can now turm my full attention to the cockpit, hoping to get something as nice as Osher's!

I'll post progress pics tonight.

This Huma Me 263 was not a good choice for a one day build. Fortunately I have had this week (and a couple moreBig Smile [:D]) off at work and have been able to finish up so without further ado...

I had to add my own pitot tube and the decals are from my academy kit, except for the swaztika which doesn't really match but will have to do for now. The kits original decals for the prototypes were completely disfunctional so we have an Me 263 with operational markings even though it never made it into combat. I look forward to your comments. 24 hours? Er, for me more like 24 days! Actually, it is difficult to model during the week due to work (but, hey, it pays for the models!), however, I managed an hour or so today. OK, so... the model cockpit was ready for a few instrument colours to be added, and then Dullcote (as it is rather shiny, being Xtracolor). However, looking at the East Fortune Me-163 for instrument colours I realised that the side walls were a sort of dirty brown... As I'm now rushing the build a wee bit slower, I repainted the sidewalls (which is harder than it sounds, due to the seat being in place, oh dear!), blacked the clocks, added some colours, and am now waiting for time, so I can Dullcote the model. Oh yes, and added some strips of masking tape for belts. I was tempted to add too a spare trim wheel from 1/72 bf-109, but decided it was going too far for this model, and would wasted.

When I see how far others have gone, and with more scratchbuilding too, it makes me embaressed! Looking at pictures of the Schlepper, it seems that I overdid it with the rust, either that or the Germans just photographed those in good condition! Anyway, here is the picture of the model so far:

Now, that is something I've never though of, Frosty... Using pastels to accentuate panel lines..! Why not!! It sounds good, gonna have to try that! Has anyone else ever tried that!?

well then, voila ma petite oeuf de mort :

this is what i managed 2 get done during MKD...

cockpit closeup ( i added a few little bits of styrene strip, rod & wire in there,
also seat harness made from masking tape )

Me-163b w/ scheuchschlepper
i had 2 redo Balkankreuze on wing topsides because one of
'em lifted off during handling & disappeared... Dead [xx(]
the kreuze w/ outlines look more sinister 2 me 4 some reason...

another look, still need 2 mask & paint canopies & add the nose prop / beanie ...
& do a bit of paint touch-up here & there...
i added some chalk pastel 2 accent panel lines, & sprayed clear flat over that.
& that's where it's at now...
this is a fun build, the academy kit fits really well & builds up pretty easily.
thanx 4 proposing this GB, Domi !
as always, u r a most gracious host, & i learn a lot by participating,
not 2 mention getting something close 2 finished !

best wishes 2 all, i'm looking forward 2 checking out more MKD builds now !

Well,
I got mine painted today and am letting it dry good ,I'm at work tonight and will
probably not work on it again till thursday. I did pretty much oob like I planed but
did a little xtra in the cockpit I used a seat from a Hellar me109K added some
seat harness and the little support bars for the armored glass and the little air
intake tube thingy I may go back and add the cstoof lines next to the seat when I
get a vac canopy. I added needle gun barrels and a resin antenna.
Good Hunting,

Update on my V21 Komet: all is proceeding well; two light coats of Future/Klear have been applied tonight; I have now a nice smooth finish to apply decals and a discreet wash in the panel lines. Still hunting for a decent figure I can modify though... I must look at my spare decals for a pair of small svastikas..

I didn't quite make it Sunday night but I managed to get the mottling done and decals applied. All that's left to do now is the flat overcoat and paint the bottom skid and axel. Thank you djmodels for organizing this build! It was quite an experience and I enjoyed it. I'm amazed at what I actually accomplished on the model! I'll try to post pics of my progress ASAP and then I'll finish it.

A Mad Spitfire Weekend could be cool! I think also a Mad Mirage Week could be OK. There are many kits of this aircraft, and many variations, plus the Israeli Nesher/Dagger and Kfir derivatives. There is the Easter long weekend coming up too... Anyway. I enjoyed the Mad Komet Day. Thanks for organsing it.

Glad you enjoyed it, Joe. That's the main thing about the hobby, no..?! There are 2 MAD days coming up, one at the end of the month, for 1/35 kits (a week end built in fact!), and another one at the end of Feb, another week end build for Armoured cars. I'm still hoping to run the Mad Matchbox Day in mid-March and the Mad Leopard Week in May. As far as aircraft are concerned, there nothing MAD-like in the pipeline...

I wonder if a Mad Skyhawk Week end would be popular..? Or a Mad Spitfire Week end..? Or a Mad X-planes Week end..?

Hey All,
I didn't finish either. The mother in law took the kids aand my bride had other
ideas that didn't include building a model,(More like try to break the bed....)
I got my plane together spent to much time getting those little side windows in!
The seat was way small but I had an old Heller ME-109K and its seat was almost
perfect. As I said I got everything together and I'll paint this afternoon and maybe finish
tonight. I will replace the canopy later with a vac but the kit part is OK for now.
This was fun and it got me off my tail and building (I did start my DR-1 but haven't
finished yet) again,
Good Hunting,
GW

Joe, Congrats, brother! I hope the paint damage is not as bad as it reads because your Komet looks really good, and indeed you may have been the only one to complete on time! Well done..! You have won a prize: Karl will send you a paper Komet to build..! LOL Kidding apart, you did really well!

Dave, above all, sorry to hear about the crashes... Hope you can repair the Essex properly... That is a nice Airfix Komet you have there! And your tractor do look good too. Can't wait to see more pics of the 'being built' Komet..!

Josh, good start my friend! Are you having troubles with the side windows too, or is it just me!?

Dan, that is a beautiful yellow. Quite poetic!

Bs, have you ever tried to do the mottling with tiny bits of sponge?

Osher, I'll endeavour to complete my build by Friday (I'm too busy next week end to do any modeling then..!)

I-beam, thanks for your interest!

In a week or so, I'll do a new thread with the final pics from all. I'm expecting some reports from a few other fellow MKDers today or tomorrow, and of course there are those who like me still need a few hours to complete!

As it happened, I did work some more on my Academy kit yesterday night. I literaly shaved plastic off the side windows to make them flush with the rest of the airframe. I still need to buff them back to to point where one can see through rthe windows, but I'm feeling better now. I'm hoping to give the Komet another coat of paint tonight, and I may possibly add the decals too. I only noticed yesterday that the kit hasn't got its svastikas.. And I'm not certain I've got spare ones..

well the time is 9:05pm here and i am finished. and none too soon. got the decals on and they did not want to sit right. pul a decal solution on and when i thought it was dry i hit the bird with a dull coat. wow talk about reaction. five min after there were visable cracks, ten min after and it looked like it had been to battle and lost. but ahh well i did get some pics early.

there we are. white 14, a bird that was only used for demonstration.

it was fun all. thanks for having me.

Progress report: The main part of the paint scheme is done. However, my airbrush is acting up on me today so I'm finding it very difficult to paint. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the mottling done. I've still got 3 1/2 hours left so I'll keep plugging away. I must admit, I am getting tired and I'm not totally thrilled with my build. As I don't have a camera available at the moment, pix will have to wait 'til tomorrow. Cheers.

Okay guys, seems like everyone is having a problem or two. It has been a frustrating day for me as well. lots of interuptions with family stuff and while I was upstairs visiting with some friends that dropped by my daughter and her friend were chasing the cat and it decided to try to hide in my workshop dumping my Halifax and the Essex I've been working on for the Pacific GB onto the floor. The Essex will survive but the Halifax took some major flak damage. Sad [:(]Sad [:(]Sad [:(]

Anyway, I have made some progress so here are some pics starting with the tractor from yesterday. No weathering or anything yet.

I threw my old Airfix Komet in the last picture to show a size comparrison between the two. Just letting the glue dry now before putty work begins. Doubt I will finish tonight either but I still have 6 hours so we'll see.

Afs of 2:00 PM all filling and sanding is complete and clear parts are installed. There seems to be a slight step around the rear windows but I'm not sure if this is more Heller's molded in framing or not. I think I may just mask the glass and sand down the ridge and hope for the best. Other than that, there's no gaps around the clear parts. Still no paint on the model though.

My second coat to the cockpit is still wet, so I can't paint the instruments and bezels, hence I can't complete the fuselage. If I only I had started in the morning... Anyway, on this note, I will finish the model for the day. So, good luck to everyone else! Maybe we can have a follow up next weekend, to see how we finished post midnight? I want to see DJ's Academy model especially! If we do agree to have a follow-up next Sunday, I'll get my model finished and photographed.

You made me laugh, Karl. Sorry to hear about your disaster day, though!

Joe, I can't wait to see your pics!

After painting (see above), I'm really not happy with the look of the transparent part representing the two side windows and a part of the airframe. It's perfect on one side, but sticking out on the other, and I've decided to take some more time to correct the problem, that is sanding down the offending 'step'. That will of course mean repainting the model after... I need to let the Tamiya paint dry properly before attempting this. There will be some re-engraving required, and that rules out a completion by Midnight. I'm beaten too.

In any case, work continues on the smaller bits (skid, wheels and dolly in particular) and on the base.

Over to you!

Wow!!!Shock [:O] I can't believe how much all of you have acheived in such a short time.

As for my all paper 263, a complete an utter washout I'm afraid. I'm man anough to know when I'm beat, and this paper stuff certainly has. I tried twice to get this thing together, but I'm convinced you need some form of magic to make this thing look like an Me263!!

Here's a pic from when it still seemed possible, or about 13.55 GMT........

......and this is from about 19.00 GMT, alternatively the point at which all will to complete this Censored [censored] thing was lost.

I still haven't ruled out burning the thing in the garden. As you can no doubt guess this saga has given my wife and kids much amusement throughout the day!!!

Look forward to seeing how everybody elses turn out.

Osher, it does not look bad from over here! Did you add a drop of vinegar and a drop of dish-washing liquid to your inky wash? Both help getting better results with water-based washes!

Bstrump, Mad Schlepper Day was Saturday, but only Osher went ahead with it, and as you can see above, it's not quite finished either. Looks like the tractor was harder to build than the aircraft! LOL

Here's my Komet with a fresh coat of Tamiya Sky Grey. With a bitt more than 4 hours to go, I really doubt I'll get this MKD build finished on time... Main problem is the pilot, really. Should have looked for one before! Oh well...

So far, I'm quite happy with my Komet.

Here is the weathered tractor, less wheels. This is the first time I tried using inks...and it was a failure. It just re-coloured the tractor, not washed. Was the wash too thick? Anyway, also the first time I tried using pigments. Using a brush wasn't so good, but when I used a finger, it came out quite nice, and looks like a rusty tractor. Over-did it a bit with the silver pen though...

Some progress to report on the build. As of 11:00 AM PST I have the the Komet assembled and the joints puttied. In about half hour or so, I should be able to start sanding and painting. Given the age of the Heller kit, I'm amazed at how tight the seams actually are. One thing I'm unsure about is whether the tractor is part of the build. If it is, I'm hooped!

Moving. I don't have a way to post pics but go to a friends when I'm done.
As I said I have the old Heller and have decided since I've always been
Red Baron "fan" I will build mine as the red v-41 flown bt Spate. And a quick
spray can coat of red will save me some time! This no super detail w/pe but
a clean oob build! (Well hopefully claen!)

Whoopie! Finally reinstalled PSP, so can post images. OK, so a second layer of RLM66 has been applied. In a while I'll add in instrument colours, then assemble the fuselage. Meanwhile, I'll mask the canopy (using masking tape I think), and weather the tractor. Not sure I'll be finished by midnight, but I should have at least the Komet assembled, and maybe a single coat of red.

DJ Second attempt is on the bench now. This certainly proving an interesting experience!!!

Luckily my wife is a scrapbooker so I have access to a wide variety of things to stick paper with. Having said that staples are looking good right now!!!!

Not sure I'm going to bother with the U/C, not convinced paper U/C legs will bear even the weight of a paper model.

Well, the bed is repaired, the cous-cous ready and the Mrs back at home safely.

I've managed another 1/2 hour and I've re-done the vents at the back of the fuselage, supposedly typical of the earlier Me-163B... I've also painted the inside where the side windows go, and have added the claer part that features part of the top fuselage and the said side windows. The fit there is not that good, possibly due to my efforts at 'furnishing' the inside..? Wonder if the other MKDers with the Academy kit have the same problem.. Anyway, nothing a bit of Milliput could not fix. I think I'm ready to paint the kit now... I still have the dolly to do, and of course all the inside of the cockpit plus the pilot, who must be quite aenemic, given the width of the Academy seat!

Karl, do not give up. Looking forward to seeing how the second model comes out!

Lodni, at least we've learned that Condor kits are no good for a Day Build..! LOL Take the next few days to complete it, my friend! We'd like to see your efforts!

Dan, this is indeed some serious flash!

This is mad but quite fun!

I wish I could start over w/ an Academy kit. The Condor kit had a decent little P.E. fret but no one can see anything in the cockpit & the rudder control arms (?) and wingtip skid bumps are a little underscale me thinks. Well, gives me some practice since that's only my second attempt at P.E. The dolly come out nice, though! LOL

Back at it after 6 hours of sleep.

Now here’s some flash. These are the small detail parts from the MPM J8M1 kit. Glad I’m only using the fuselage halves, tail halves and tail wheel from the styrene parts. Well, maybe the “take-off” wheels if I have time.

Thanks to Calvin I now kown it a take-off dolly!

Good to see everyone making progress.

I printed off my paper 263 an hour ago, anf have spent much of that hour cutting out the main assemblies. This is harder than it looks, so far I've managed to cut out a chunk of the fuselage that I shouldn't have, so that the lower portion has fallen off!!!!!!

I thought a paper kit would be the easy option!

Will post some pictures soon, only it means faffing around unplugging from the net due to a lack of USB ports!

Looking good, Joe! You've made some real progress there! As far as I'm concerned, the main assembly is completed; I've used jeweller's files and sandpaper to sand down a few seems, and have added Milliput epoxy putty in a few little places where it was needed. I've kind of re-worked the area behind the cockpit so that one can not seen sideways through the aircraft anymore. The epoxy putty will take a good hour to dry (I used very little!) and I'll continue on the bird there and then. I'm gonna have lunch and start on the base in the meantime.

This is how things look 12 hours into this MKD. There's actually about 2 1/2 hrs of work in there.

ok the time is almost 3 am here. made good progress and the kit cooperated very very well with what i wanted to do. the construction is almost complete. only the wheels remain. tomorow first thing is to mask the canopy and then i can spray this bird.

pics.

first up of course is the start photo. i began late as the computer would not cooperate with me.

first up for construction was the cockpit. first painted then assembled.

then up was the fuse. but i did something unusual for me i glued the wing halves and the tail halves together before attaching to the fuse. then i put them all together.

when that had a chance to dry a bit i put white liquid paper over what little seams there were.

the canopy was last and now the entire assembly has a chance to dry. going to head to bed now and hit it again in the morning.

night all.

Well 2 1/2 hours and thats it for me. Got the cockpit and Landing gear assembly together and thats it. Got to let the glue dry before I try to put the fuse together. The plastic on this kit is super soft. If I didn't know any better (and I don't) I'd say its one shade shy of vinyl. Its going to be interesting when I start sanding seams (and I have little doubt that there will be seams).

Looking forward to getting up in the morning and seeing everyones progress. Calvin should be done by then shouldn't he?

Lots of clean up needed on the styrene parts. I've got some craving, filing and sanding ahead of me. It's going to need a lot of gap filling super glue. A quick dry fit and it doesn't look so good. I don't know how well the resin tub's going to fit in the upper fuselage. Good thing there's not a lot of parts to this airplane.

I'm off to bed for a few hours sleep.

I'm back ! Have to drive the Mrs to work, and will need to find the time to prepare supper and repare the bed (don't ask!), but all in all, it should be OK.

Joe, likewise I'll will not be adding much in the tub, mostly because the pilot will hide quite a bit of it.

Calvin, sorry to hear about that. I've just done some dry-fitting of the main bits and mine seems really good in terms of fit. Wonder if anyone else has experience of that Condor kit..?

Dave, the Academy kit will be for another time, not to worry!

Aw shucks!!!! I had to go and open my big mouth and insert my size 11 foot. There is no way I am going to be able to do the Academy kit as well as the Huma. Shoulda looked a little closer at the Huma before I started braggin'!! Ashamed [*^_^*] I knew the Huma was a short run kit but it looked pretty good on the sprue, and there is only 30 or so parts, how hard could it be right?? Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V] I'm an hour and a half in and I finally glued the 5 parts that make up the pit and thats without scratch building a new control stick which is what I really should do. At this rate I'll be lucky to get the 263 done never mind the 163. Oh well... live and learn. Reality bites!!! Sad [:(]

Report from Japan: All has not gone well! My example seems to have been mis-molded or something. There is a large gap between the wing/bottom fuselage & the top parts! And the exhaust doesn't line up at all! A considerable amount of filler had to be used. About to paint the exterior. I wish I had thought about setting up my MSN and/or Yahoo chat. Thanks for the offer of the wheel or tractor, but I think I'll find the wheel somewhere, and it's a good excuse to clean behind the computer (usually the one place in the house that really needs it!). I'm determined now to make the tractor I built into something nice. Just needs work, patience, and, delicate fingers.

Thanks for joining me on Mad Komet Tractor Day! Like you, I completed and painted the model, except the wheels. Of course, I'm now missing a wheel (I'll need to move the computer to find it). In reality, I wouldn't mind stripping the tractor, and repainting it, as I botched the paint job. I'd changed the settings on my airbrush and compressor, and forgot I did so... Really, I should have tested it first on scrap, but I didn't, and result was the paint went on with too much pressure, and too close to the airbrush. This meant that the paint shifted (I think possibly a bit too thin too, but that should not be a problem) after application, due to being blown into corners. This certainly makes the tractor cry out for weathering! At least the settings are now correct for the Komet.

Speaking of the Komet, the clear parts are in Future/Klear, and the cockpit is being cleaned up for assembly and painting.

About 6 ½ hours before the start time for me. I did make it thru the ice to the LHS and got my paints and some square styrene for the stand. Also made a quick stop at Lowe's Home Improvement Store for a tile that I will use as a base.

Here is the J8M1 I am going to try and reproduce,

First repport before the first break, as I need the glue to dry before attempting any filing/filling in with putty...

Here's my 'start' picture....

And here are the main sub-assemblies glued together. I'll paint and detail the cockpit later...

So far no problem to report. I'm a bit confused though by what one can see through the side windows... Even the box art shows some details that are not in the kit... May have to research that a bit more. Those box art details are on the Airfix and Heller kits... Why not here??!

Well, just under 5 hours to go for me.

I just couldn't let osher do his Mad Komet tractor day all by himself though so while I was out running errands today I picked up Academy's kit and started on the tractorBig Smile [:D]. Am I pathetic or what!!!! Ashamed [*^_^*] It is all put together and painted (the tractor that is) except the tires and tracks. I went with a dark grey colour because I didn't have an appropriate yellow.

It's a great looking kit and I am now wondering if its possible to do two kits in one day???Shock [:O]Shock [:O]Shock [:O] (someone did two kits for Mad allied day)

Well, it's just past midnight here, so time to start! The tractor is almost finished, except weathering and wheels...yep, one of them decided to make a break for freedom, and is behind the computer somewhere...

Not sure what seat belts, if any, the Komet had. Any good websites with pictures?

OK, this is what I have in mind. Me-163B V-21, as piloted by Rudy Opitz on 20, 30 and 31 July 1943 from Peenemunde. The aircraft is light grey overall, with no markings other than the national insignas and the little V21 'stencils' on the fin.

My task is made a touch more complicated by the fact that I want to represent the aircraft taking off. I've got to find a pilot, modify it a little (because Opitz wore a camera strapped onto his forehead!), and find a decent way to represent the exhaust flame and the white smoke coming off the bottom of the fuselage. As far as the kit itself is concerned, there's little changes from the 'basic' Academy kit: a new set of vents on the tail, canon tubes protruding from the wing/fuselage and removal of the 'later' type of pitot. I'll try to give a better look to the landing skid's shock absorber bits.

We shall see!

OK, well, assembly of the tractor (less wheels/tracks) took around an hour. No real problems, except the seat seems to sit (excuse the pun) badly. Putting some more pressure on it to sit better resulted in the spike poking up! A liberal dosage of glue, and patience, and it now seems OK. Other than that, no problems, although 4 hands for assembling the rear section is useful. Now for a final sanding down (I seem to have missed a few bits here and there), then ready for the paint shop. Hannants recommended (and it seems right) Humbrol 94, a sort of browny yellow. Of course, I should have done this, this morning, but somehow the day zipped past, so only started at 8pm! Later, some MIG pigments (rust and dust), plus some chipping to be added, and a burnt umber wash. Pictures too I hope! All ready too for the main build, the Komet. Not started anything, but at midnight...

Ten and a half hours to go! This is gonna be fun! It'll be interesting, too. I haven't been able to get to the LHS in quite a while so I'll have to make do with the paints I've got on hand.

Osher, Humbrol 93 or Revell 16 would be a good start. After a wash and a drybrush, it won't matter much anymore. But 99 and 154 are definitely not 'ochre' enough.

Having said that, now that you only have 3hrs and 30mins to complete the tractor, it might not matter anyway either! Just kidding!

Lodni, hope everything is going well for you. By the time I start, you should be really well into it!

Thanks for the update, Dawn razor. I'll update the records accordingly!

Dan, wishing you luck with both the Komet and the other half!

I'm gonna take a short nap before getting started!

Less then 12 hours before I can get started. Just told the wife that I was participating in another “Mad” build starting at midnight, I forgot to tell her sooner. Seems she forgot to tell me she was going on a trip as she’s in the bedroom packing her bags.

Going to be great fun, still have to get out to the hobby shop for some paint, nothing like waiting until the last minute. Trip to the LHS could be complicated as we’re having a bit of an ice storm right now. Oh well, traffic should be light.

Oh well, just me, and it's now (by 6 minutes) Saturday! Just 23 hours and 53 minutes left to finish in. OK, seriously, can anyone recommend a blend to produce the 'dark yellow' finish of the tractor? I've got most Humbrol paints, as well as others, and best I can think of is 99 (lemon) or 154 (pale yellow)

Well, the 24 hours to build the 'schlepper' starts in 14 hours and 20 minutes! I'm going to do mine in mustard yellow, use some burnt umber ink for washing (I've never washed a model before, so, should be interesting), use a silver pen for edging (scratches), some MIG pigments for dust (again, a first time), and a silver light dry brush generally.

Is anyone else going to join me for the 'Mad Komet Tractor Day'?

Here's some more info on camouflages for Komets... (from D Brown on HyperScale):

"The slow production and delivery of the Me 163B resulted in it wearing a variety of camouflage colours from the time of the first deliveries (December 1943) to the cessation of production (February 1945). It is known from the many published photos and other documentation that most of Ekdo.16's aircraft were Me 163 BVs (V: "Versuchs", or test/experimental) and many were uncamouflaged, being painted in either RLM 02, or more likely, RLM 76. Other aircraft are known to have had very dark, low contrast upper wing colours, which do not suggest the 74/75 greys, but more likely the 70/71 greens. Their fuselages are interpreted as being painted in 76 with a mottle of 75.

The well-photographed aircraft "White 05" is thought to be a Me 163 BV variant, as it and other similarly painted Ekdo.16 aircraft appear to be missing their Werknummern. However, photos indicate that all V-aircraft did at one time have their Versuchsnummer painted on the tail in black, but given the dark colour of these aircraft's tails could be difficult to see. Alternatively, if the aircraft were delivered directly to the unit initially in overall 65 and soon in 76, the number could easily have been over-painted at the unit level when the camouflage colours were applied.

As Me 163 production slowly increased, aircraft with moderate-contrast schemes suggestive of 74/75/76 begin to appear. Aircraft with such schemes (or variations) have been documented during the restoration of these aircraft and faithfully reproduced (Merrick and Hitchcock, 1980, pp.48-49). There is also colour photographic evidence of Me 163s painted in the 81/83 scheme (Merrick and Hitchcock, 1980, p.50; Sheflin, 1983, pp.18-19). What is unknown is when this change-over to the late-war colours took place and if it was officially documented. The date of this change could not have been any later than February 1945, as production of the aircraft ceased during this month with a total of 364 aircraft completed and delivered to Ekdo.16, I. II. and IV./JG 400 and IV./EJG 1 (Smith and Kay, 1972). It is thought likely that an order authorizing this change must have been issued sometime in late 1944-early 1945."

Note that Mr Brown only says 'use of schemes suggestive of 74/75/76'... Since the wings were delivered painted and attached to the primed (RLM 76???) fuselage, it is possible to think that at one time, maybe for White 14, the mottled camo consists of 74 and/or 75 over 76, but that the wings are still 70/71, either with 76 (light grey) or even 65 (very light blue) undersides...

Well the thing is, Joe, this guy is only giving away his own theory, given that the Komets operated from bases where older bombers where used, hence the 70/71 on the wings, and possibly the fuselages of the Komet... The 74/75/76 combo could be right but there are few - I can't think of any - representations of Komets showing a two tone grey camo on the wings... But who can say..?

In any cases, the 70/71 combo would only have been applied on early Komets while White 14, the one you want to model, is a later production aircraft and may have had a later green camo of 81/83 (mauve/green and bright green kind of colours... ).

Difficult...

Osher, to answer your question about the tractor, yes go ahead and start it now if you want; as it's not a feature of all Komet kits, I can not expect the tractor to be part of a 24hrs build for those who have the Heller or Academy kits..

As to the glossy red, I'd be careful not to make it too glossy. In 1/72, high gloss will make your model look toy-like. I'd go for a mat red (covers better too!) and give a one or maybe a couple of Klear/Future coats to give it a 'hint' of a shine.

Yep, makes sense. I think I'll build mine with just the crosses and swases. It was painted in a hurry, so it's reasonable to assume they wouldn't have bothered with everything else (there again, it's just as reasonable to assume they might have!). I'm going to assume too it was finished in gloss.

Yes, there are some open-ended possibilities offered by this red Komet as there are apparently no photographic evidence and only the word of its pilot... Since it was done a bit as a joke, I'd have thought the markings (other than the national insignas) and stencils would have been covered up... Can't even think they would have left the V41 on the fin either... But the Heller decal sheet is obviously based upon the 5 view drawings in the Profile booklet and this shows all the markings. I have the Polish book (shown above in the original post) that's much newer than the Profile and that shows on the front cover another profile of the red Komet with all its markings and stencils, plus a touch of weathering that can't just be right...

I think when it comes to the decals for V41 I have 3 options: create my own, using a generic decal sheet of German lettering; find my old Heller kit (or buy one); or assume that the lettering was left out when it was repainted (which luckily could have happened, and can't be disproved!). Unless that is, someone knows of a good decal sheet? Hannants don't have one.

On another note...I guess it's not cheating to build the tractor unit before the MKD?

Can't wait to see your Komet, Osher. I've been reading that info on the Red Komet and found it quite interesting. Obviously, since the red was soon removed after the first operational flight, it's got to be a very neat, clean scheme!

I think I'm gonna go for V21, in a light grey overal scheme, wearing just the crosses and the svastikas and tiny V21 'numbers'. It does not wear any of the large black letters near the fuselage crosses, which I do not have anyway with the kit or even in my decal bank... That will leave me more time for what I have in mind... V21 was the aircraft used for the first flight with the engine running.

Osher, I suppose you're reffering to the overall-red Komet. It was prototype V41, identical to the production B model as far as I know but I'm not certain it carried any armament...

I also got the Academy kit, probably do the B version. What version was the famous 'rot' flight (the most famous colour scheme only ever used for one flight for any aircraft?)?

A good choice, Josh. I don't think you can go wrong with the Academy kit...

Little over a month away and I’m still looking forward to this build…about the same way I’m looking forward to my next root canal. Just kidding, I said it before these “Mad” builds are a lot of fun so grab a Komet kit and join us other mad builders!
