ok, i know i havent been here. i ve had some serious delays as you can see. i put this build on hold for a while (personally) thanks to a hitch in my layout of my dio. it may not seem like much but, im a rivet counter, so i had to deal with it. ive been doing some other builds in the meantime. im sorry if you guys thought this thing was dead. i just havent been keeping up with things.

panzer- the puma looks excellent. the paint has a nice faded look to it. post up some more pics.

price- i havent used my archers yet, but i have used other transfers before. you have to be careful with them, and position them exactly where you want them to go prior to putting them on, because once they're on, they're on. you use something called a transfer sheet to set the decals. using a pencil eraser or something with a blunt end, you burnish the transfer onto the carrying sheet. then you psition thedecal where you want it on the model,a nd burnish it on from the carrying sheet. you have to make sure that youve burnished all the decal completely before removing the sheet from the original sheet or the model, because otherwise youll be left with only parts of the decal, and itll be ruined like a water set thats shattered.

looks good overall price. I'd try to shade and highlight him a bit. try a general dark wash over the clothes, and a redish brown over the flesh parts, then use the color on eash clothing part that appears the most, or is the base color, lighten it, and use it to highlight the upper sides of folds. do the same for the flesh. hirghlight seems with a brush and the wash again, but this time, painting it onto the seems, and narrow regions like under the pockets, so as to highlight and pronounce them. that should really bring out what you've already done

Oh sorry gringe88. My bad. I have been painting figures for years. I have over 325 54mm figures and thousands of 1/72 scale figures. Plus I cast my own. Anyways, I used a small brush and regular Model Master enamel paints. Went with Panzer Olive Grun for the coat and some type of brown that I cant read for the pants. Tonight I am going to use some Red Brown and Green for the camo. Hope that helps!

Havent started with the weathering yet because I dont know what I want to do with it. I have a 251/1 thats sitting around and I might put the two together for a diorama. Dont know yet. As for the painting it was done by brush and spray paint using Model Masters Panzer Gray. Thanks for the kind words. I got the second coat on the figure's jacket and pants last night. He is going to have camo pants when I am done!

OK so I have been working on the schwimmy lately and had to wait for some paint to dry. I suddenly had a burning desire to continue building so I picked up the Kubelwagen. I started it 5 days ago. For me being this far is most excellent. All I have left to do is add the doors and top. Then I can weather it a bit after I touch it up. Not a lot really and plan to finish it by the end of the weekend. Let me know please what you think. I went with the old stand by of Panzer Gray. I ordered some Archer transfers that contain some 12 SS signs. They should be here by next week or so I hope.

Thanks for looking.

OK you can take those pins out of that effigy you've done of me as I've had nothing but bother with my back.
I Will post the pics over the next day or so, I've also managed to get a HitlerJugend figure from the club show which I will add to the 251/9 over the next few days but will place onto the vehicle for the pics.

pg- yeah, i found volume 1 of that same set at my local borders. a very nice storyline like you said, but not many pics. i picked up a new publication from a publisher(?) called Battlefield Europe, on Operation Bluecoat. lots of good pics. theres another book i have on the fight for Hill 112 another very good piece, with a diagram of the battle for villers-bocage, and pics and info concerning the 12 SS as well.i might do an infantry pair vignette about that as well.

gringe88 and others,

Thought I would mention that I was in Borders Book Store last night. There I found volume two of a book called 12 SS. Not a lot of photos but more of a story line about them. I might make a purchase in the near future. It is made by the same company who published Tigers in the Mud and Armour Battles of the Waffen SS. Anyways, there it is.

Hi. clint.
There's some reference pics of the 12th. using the Sd.kfz.7/1 in Normandy, but the only reference I've got is from the Battles around Budapest where they were used in both the AA and Ground roles.
Hope this helps you to decide.

thanks panzermann for the info. i miss-spoke, when i used the 251 designation. my main concern is the lack of photographic evidence of their use. if you or anyone else could help in this i would be very grateful.i have checked the books in the original thread above but couldnt find anything on this vehicle.
thanks again,

Hi.clint.
You'll find that the vehicle in question is not the 251 but the Sd.Kfz.7/2 as the 251 would have been too small to mount the 3.7cm on it . the other main AA carriers the unit used were the Sd.Kfz. 7/1 with and without the Armoured Cab ot the /2 also they had the Flak 38(t) along with some 251/21 Drillings.
Hope that this has been of some help to you
Happy Modelling.

Question... i have a TO&E that states the 12th had a verry limited number of 251s with the 3.7 AA. unfortunaly i cant find a pic. so i am asking for a ruling, should i go with the TO&E or pick another sub. i havent started yet because of the research ,so if i start over
no big deal.. thanks for any input and comments in advance

sure snegron, a jagdpanzer is perfect! they had those. nice snag on the book too. i put up a list of books and sites that could be useful on the first page down a little. i also found another title i might put up:

SS-Hitlerjugend: The History of the Twelfth SS Division 1943-45
by Rupert Butler from Casemate

picked it up at NOREASTCON. a nice book, not too many pics, but still a good read.

[edit]- BTW, scott you using two names here?

Nevermind, my goof! I was thinking Battle of the Bulge was the topic and not the 12. SS. How about a jagdpanzer IV? I have both Concord books (Battle of the Bulge and Panzers in the Ardennes), and well as the original (signed by Hubert Meyer:) Fedorowicz hardback (12. SS-Panzer Division). There just aren't many photo's of 12. SS armor in the Bulge. Option 2 is a jagdpanther, but again, no photos!

I'm going to visit my friend Hans Naas Saturday. Unfortunately, the only photo he has is of himself!

the deadline is to whenever you can finish, but preferably to late august.

as far as my references tell me, the 12th never used any king tigers, unless they were issued some for the ardennes offensive or the offensive into Budpest in the last year of the war. otherwise, the heaviest armor they had were panther A's and D's(?) and Mk. IV's of the H/J variety

Hi. All.
It's update time from overthe pond,
Have finished the L24 main gun decided not to use the metal barrel will keep it for my Dragon stummel have only to add a few pieces of etched to the safety cage of the gun and new mounts for the spent shell cases.
The Eduard set is neat as it also includes masks for the veh. numbers only downer is it just replaces the one supplied with the kit decals.
Happy Modelling to all.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] ive got the archer dry-transfers set which im planning on using. its a good set, made up of the unit emblem of the 12SS in varying sizes. and yea man, stop dragging your feet and join already!!

Scott Negron- Hi! i just gotta ask one question. what do you mean by 100% done? if you;ve already built the model, then im afraid you wouldnt be able to use it for this GB. the point of the GB's is so that you can build the model during the time of teh build.

Never the less, I'd be glad if you could join in! if you cant use your panther, then maybe you could enter in with another model. hope you can join in.

Hi. tankmaster7.
The best thing to do is to get hold of the SS-Pz.-Divs. from Archer Fine Dry Rub decals as they have a good range of various markings and the Unit insignia's come in diferent sizes on the one sheet, you get about 7 - 8 different SS units on the sheet.
Hope that this helps you.
Happy Modelling.

Scott_Negron,

Joining is up to gringe88 as he is running the show. What do you mean its 100% done?? Just a question but why join if you finished it already?? So did you make the tank after the commander's tank?? If so, that is cool.

Hi.All.
Just about time for an update, I've replaced some of the Tamiya items with parts from Dragon's 3 in 1 251 Ausf. D as I'm not going to use their /9 version so the Ammunition box has been replaced as the Tamiya one was molded closed also the interior was lacking to say the least, have replaced the radio and frame as the Dragon version has a speaker included on to the side of the frame, also the power relay for the radio, the radio operator's folding seat, the ready round box this is fitted to the R/H/side just to the rear of the mount.
The only thing on the Armament to be changed is the gun barrel for a Jordi Rubio barrel.
Eduard PE is being used along with the tracks from Dragon. all lockers are staying closed as the Vehicle will be heavily cammouflarged with long grass secured to the sides with wires from the tie-downs.
Happy Modelling.

hope that this helps .

hey thanks a lot guys!!Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D] i entered my Pz. 38(t) ausf. B and my 82nd Airborne two man bazooka team in normandy. i won with the Pz. 38.

the concord book is nice. i don't care much about the color photos, i already have several sources for uniforms, camo's and etc.etc. what i like is the resource of period photographs. in particular the info on the Pz. IV's and such. very nice. i also like such pics because of their inspirational value. an interesting item or gun positions or way a knocked out tank looks can be very useful when planning out a dio, and the fact that they're from the region and unit you're building a dio around makes them handy in confirming aspects of a piece prior to construction.

Just a quick update I've replaced the Tamiya's L24 and I'm using the one from the Dragon 3 in 1 for the 251Ausf D as this is a better representation of the gun also the detail is more crisp and I'll be adding the missing radio operators folding seat it also comes from the 3 in 1 wil post some pics later when I've assembeled the lower hull and running gear.

Just got the new Concord book on the "Hitler Jurgend" has got some good pics but the colour art work is terrible as two pages are taken from the box art of the Late Panther Ausf.A and the SS-Pz.Gren.Regt.25. which I feel is a bit of a let down if you look at the other two books on the SS by Concord.SoapBox [soapbox].

gringe88,

Good deal. I would also highly recommend the book SS Armor by Squadron/Signal publications. I just saw it on Ebay. Super book. Better than Steel Rain in MHO. Let me know if you need anything else.

Update on my progress....there is none. I had found a Kubel and then lost it due to it not being In Stock. Then Panzermann hooked me up with one and I got the "In Stock" one finally. So just waiting for them to arrive. Hope everyone is doing well with theirs.

I wouldn't bother with the Trumpeter figure set as it's not one of their best.
Dragon do a set of SS-Pz.Gren.Regt.25 also try getting hold of their Arnhem figs as they are also in SS garb,

Yep found you your Kubel it was part of the reccon set up.
Also Dragon does a set of figures for the SS - Pz.Gren.Regt.25. in Normandy also you could use the Figure in the NormandyTank Aces set of figures who is dressed in theU-Boat Leathers. can't remember the Numbers sorry but you could also use the new LAH Russia 43 as they have the one piece overalls on.
Hope that this is a help.

gringe88,

Put me down for both the 234/1 and a Kulewagen. Tamiya for the Kubel. The book I have is SS Armor by Squadron/Signal publications. Pretty good with a lot of photos. Has some nice color drawings of armor from various SS units as well as color drawings of figures from various units. I also have SS The Blood-Soaked Soil, SS Loyalty is My Honor, Armor Battles of the Waffen-SS and SS Steel Rain (maybe). I recommend the SS Armor. I might get the book you suggested by Concord.

ok guys, you're up there. if you do change your builds just let me know and post'um up. now on to other things....

panzerman- could you check that source of yours to find out if the 12th also used a kubel with a radio set up in back? im planning on using tamiya's kit and a conversion set from tiger werke for mine. it looks pretty cool. as of yet, I haven' found any documentation for it in the 12th, but then again, I haven't found any documentation of it in any other units either, so it may just be something they overlooked. It doesn't seem to be have been anything special in my eye, perhaps just used on low level works, its fairly simple looking. (the kubel using this set up was designated the type 821 instead of the 82, just for reference.)

I don't think DML made any 12SS figures, but I do know trumpeter does. but, you don't need the figures to be labeled as from the particular unit. Just take any from the time period and local (DML does have several very nice fig sets from Normandy ) and use them. If you want it all to be stated as from the 12SS, check out archer or go oneline, and buy or print out some of the hitlerjugend armbands (like what's on the 65x65 badge ) and use them. u could even use armabnds from the 1st SS (Leipstandarte Adlf Hitler I believe ) as many of the NCO's and officers were from that unit, and just kept their armabnds. keep in mind though that not every man had the armbands or immediately identifiable designation marks other than rank and such, so really any good fig from the time period could be employed.

As for kits, like i said, DML does have some nice one's; trumpeter is coming out with some stuff; there are several smaller resin kits from companies like Warrior, Verlinden, and Royal Models; or you could take whatever works.

also, thanks a lot for the info panzerman. i posted up some stuff earlier on the first page, including a couple sites and books Ive found that are pretty good.

BTW- price, which book do you have? I just wanna know, im inquisitiveWink [;)]

Anyways, I think I might pony up the money for the Kubel as the SS Armor book I have has a nice color drawing in it. Not sure yet. Building a 223 and had hoped to use that but I dont think they had any. Panzermann found out that they had a 232 that I have but I might save that one. Just dont know!!!

I need to finish the GBs that end soonest first, like the YG gb ends in early June, and I barely have that done.

sure, long as it was used by the 12th its good! they were also deployed in the offensive to break the russian siege of Budapest. after that debacle, they were sent into eastern Austria, where they eventually surrendered to the Americans

for my dio, im startin with tamiya's type 82 kubel. i got a conversion set from tiger werke to make it a radio communications version. its got a large radio set up in the back seat. i also got a detail set from verlinden for it. im also starting the figures for the dio. they'll be a collection of tamiya, ertl/esci, dragon, verlinden, and warriors. the flakpanzer is going to be made from the tamiya marder III M kit, converted folr the job with italeris 20mm flak 38. ill have to scratchbuild the rear compartment forit.

it wont be a sizeable diorama, but itll have a lot of detail. ive been collecting up dio pieces for a while now, while i was on other builds. ill gfet some pics up once i got some more done on the kubel

yea, it has the 20mm set up almost in line together, like machine guns. the flakvierling has the four canons stacked, two on each side, one over the other. ive never seen a 251 with one of those on it. sounds like a cool idea

I am pretty sure it is the flakvierling. I am not exactly sure what a "drilling" is, outside of the old elephant rifle. Confused [%-)]

I think I am going to do a Sdkfz 251/4 with the quad 20mm. I cannot find anything that states if they used this version or the 37mm. Any help would be appreciated. If I get ambitious I will do another Sdkfz 251 as well. Both are Hasegawa 1/72.

starts march 30, or 31, it doesn't matter to me, 24 hours doesnt really make a difference

if youve just started your research on the 12th and wut vehicle u'd like to use,
here's some recommended resources for ya:

http://home.att.net/~SSPzHJ/Org.html
-a very good site on the 12 SS, including an organization chart, info on vehicles, personel, general unit history, and more

http://spearhead1944.com/gerpg/12ss.htm
-another page on the units organization, along with the type of weapon/vehicle used by each level of the division and how many of them were in a particular company, etc.

http://www.hitlerjugend.net/Index.html
-a good site with good pics and more info

http://www.12hj.com/welcome.html
-another reenacting site with more info

http://web.telia.com/~u18313395/normandy/gerob/gerob.html
http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~grempel/tours/normandy/battle.html
-some very good sites on the 12th. you can thank beav if u see him for these ones

http://panzersinnormandy.tripod.com/
- this site isn't specifically about the 12 SS but its got some pics of the unit's vehicles. its also just an excellent site about the normandy battles

there are also several books out on the 12 SS, including
the latest book from concord publications
Hitler Youth and the 12.SS-Panzer Division 'Hilterjugend' '33-'45

The 12th SS Panzer Division - HJ
from Schiffer Publishing by Herbert Walther

one from Osprey titled The Waffen-SS (3) which has info on the 12 SS along with several other SS divisions. this one is fairly ligther on the 12th though

Meyer: History of 12 SS-Panzerdivision "Hitlerjugend"
by Hubert Meyer from J.J. Fedowicz Publishing

along with several other books. the first three here are available from GreatModels.com. I only have the title from Concord, and it is very good with numerous photos. the books from Osprey is fairly general, and doesn't have many photos or info. the other two I suspect are just textual sources, but should go very in deepth. if you're looking for more info, just search on yahoo or google, there are a lot of hits.

NEway, those are just some of the resources I will be using/ have found. If u find NE others with useful info, please feel free to post them up!!
hope it helps!!

I would also like to take part in this build with the Italeri Puma kit. I did not know if it was used by the 12ss recon (I posted this early in this GB thread in armor) but I found 2 references that show that the Puma was used.
SS Reconnaissance Battalion 12

BN HQ Armored Car Troops: Unavailable (short) Probably 2x222 light and

1x232 heavy armored cars

Armored Car Recon Coy

2x222 Armored Cars, 1x232 Armored Car
and a reference on a Missing Links article on the Italeri Puma.

Bernage, George and Meyer, Hubert, 12SS Panzer Division HitlerJugend. Editions Heimdal, 1994.
(An excellent factory shot of a production Puma, showing the gun cleaning rod rack)
Sorry for the lenghty post but I wanted to show that the Puma was used.
Anways, I'd like to do the Puma.
Edit: For the badge I think it should be the 12ss symbol (the key and such) with whatever words you guys choose. The German of Blood and Honor would make it more interesting I think. My two cents

I'd like to sign up for this one if I may. I am not a very good armor modeller, but it will give me a chance to improve...I have a couple of different kits that I can dig out and build, so give me a day or so to figure out what I can do. I understand completely where you are coming from with this build. Thanks.
