Oh, progress update. Most gaps filled with my newly discovered gap filling putty. (It's soooooo much better than squadron white.) Will be ready for apint by monday. At which point it gets put on the back burner while I finish up my SA-2. Plus school's always getting in the way.

Heehee I'll leave you in suspense as to what this new miracle putty stuff is.

nothing wrong with enamels... Thats all I used to use... I prefer the Vallejo line though, go on smooth, mo waste of paint and they smell a lot nicer too!

and yeah it does suck... I was finally getting motivated! I think I need to take tomorrow off and go to the model store... drown my sorrows in plastic and acrylics...

That sux Tom. And what's wrong with spraying enamels? They're my favorite kind of paint. They go on soooo smooth and they are extremely durable.

Sorry to hear that Tom. I had the same thing happen long ago & it does frustrate. I took a small piece of 2X4 & drilled 2 appropriate sized holes & use that as a holder for the Microl Sol & Set bottles. Otherwise, they are easily tipped.

ok.............................. the Stuka is no longer with us, it has ceased to be... it is an EX-Stuka....

I had less than half of the fuselage decaled when what happened? I carelessly knocked the bottle of MICROSOL I was using over on the sheet of decals... now you may thing no prob get more decals and finish it. But I think in my own best interest I will put it aside for now and go on with another build. I am wishing I had Vallejo Middlestone to do the Martlet but all I have is enamel and I don't feel like spraying it... so it will have to wait till Tues or Wed or so until some arrives.

The Ju87 may end up either a paint hulk or I may finish it later, regardless I am buying another one soon as it was a fun build and was shaping up nicely!

If I had British desert yellow I could do the Quad tractor... maybe I'll make the LOOOONG trip to the HS that carries Vallejo and see what I can cook up!

I forgot to add the look of shame on my face right now... ----> Disapprove [V]

Tony, don't give up on it. Just wrestle it to the ground & come up with a show stopper.

Rick I'm looking forward to finally getting this thing into the paintshop too!!!!

Best of luck with sorting out those fish eyes, I'm looking forward to seeing your 109.

Tom I've taken a few as I work, mainly as I discover new inaccuracies!

Progress Update

Spent the afternoon scribing in all the missing panel lines, and there were a lot of them. While doing this I sudenly realised that HC had the fabric undersurface of the fuselage extending too far forwards, by about 5mm!!!!! Shock [:O]

Oh well another job to getting on with!

Pictures tomorrow, I promise.

Karl, looking forward to seeing the bird painted. I had a small disaster on my 109 when I got some fish eyes after painting. Must have been some contamination on the model surface, although I cleaned & primed as usual. Need to let it cure for another day, then sand the trouble areas & repaint.

Tanky I use a watercolour wash, applied over a coat of Future.

Just get a couple of tubes of artists water colour, I use black and burnt umber, and squeeze some into a dish. the colours you use are up to you, and dependent upon the subject.

I then add some water to the dish to get a thin wash, and simply daub all over the panel lines etc. The beauty of water colours is that because they wash off with water, it doesn't matter if you make a pigs ear of things.

Just let them dry, then wipe off with a damp Q-tip, or piece of kitchen towel, at 90 degrees to the direction of the panel line. This should leave you with paint in the recess, and nowhere else. Any excess can then be wiped off the panels.

Finally seal the whole lot with a coat of the appropriate varnish.

Like Rick said, more difficult to explain than actually do.

Progress Update

Finally finished the wing root joint. Now scribing in all the panel detail that HC left off! Which is quite al lot!!!!

At this rate should be ready for primer by next weekend!

Tanky, if you use a wash on a gloss surface it shouldn't smudge or stain the paint as long as you use a dissimilar paint for the wash. If you use an acrylic over Future, it can smudge, but oil or water color shouldn't. Maybe you were putting it on too thick or heavy.

Hmm, my problem when I try an oil wash is it usually smudges a bit. (I've tried that method twice already) Maybe I'm not letting it dry long enough. I usaully wait 20 minutes, but it usually discolors the paint anyway. Maybe a mechanical pencil would work?

ok right now I feel like Kremps has parked her big behind on my head and is attempting to squeeze my sinuses out through my ears...... I've had this sinus infection every May ever since I got deployed out to the desert... in fact that's where I got it the first time... Uncle Sam's gift to me I guess...

Tanky - another method very similar to Ricks is to get either artists oils or watercolors. thin with the approriate thinner... then using a 3/0 or smaller (I use a 10/0 for most panel lines, 3/0 for flaps and larger areas) dip the brush into the wash, then touch it at the edge of the panel line... capillary action will pull it along to a certain extent. wet and pick up where the line stopped etc... it is a bit tedious but you can get your lines in without changing the look of the paint... let it dray and presto! for areas where it gets out of the lines refer to Ricks instructions above...

----edit----

actually that might have been what he said.. it sounds the same after I read it...
there you have it... 3 different ways... have fun!!!

I'm going crawl back in my hole now... Disapprove [V]

Easiest way is to use artist oils thinned with mineral spirits & applied over Future. Don't do a sludge type wash, try & keep the wash in the panel lines. You will get some out side the lines but don't fret. Let it dry for a while & then use a soft cloth or Q-tip moistened ( NOT WET ) with mineral spirits & gently wipe off the excess. If You happen to remove some of the wash from the lines, just repeat the procedure. Harder to describe than to do.

Quintin Superp looking figure mate, looks greatThumbs Up [tup]

Darren no worries mate i'll update page oneThumbs Up [tup] BTW the guy at my LHS opened up the box and let me have a squizz at the Tamiya Kublewagen, looks like a great little kit, what didn't make sense to me was they got a whole heap of them in at the LHS with the latest Tamiya stuff but no 109 E4/7's came in with it...........

Tony welcome to the GB mate, and don't worry we'll keep you entertained and motivatedThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] i've added your name and build to page one.............

Tanky cause i preshade all my models i like to just add the wash in the panel lines as well, i use a watercolour pencil, they are designed for kids to colour in like normal and then dip a paintbrush in water and go over the colour, once the water hits it it turns into watercolour paint, anyway i crush up the pigment into powder and then add water until it's real thin, then i use a 00 brush and carefully go over the panel lines, the excess just wipes off with a damp cloth and leaves no staining on the model......
BTW Derwent watercolour pencils are the best to use.......

Question for you guys- I want my bf-109 to have a panel line enhancing wash, but I do NOT want to achieve a weathered look with it. I want it in the panel lines, and onbly in the panel lines for a clean enhanced look. How would I do that?

Quinten, Very nice painting of the Foxy General. But where are the famous goggles Smile [:)].

Darren, I have the Tamiya 1/48 Kubelwagen kit, but haven't built it yet. Plan to incorporate it in a small vignette some day. I'm with you on the Jeep. Keep hoping Tamiya will release one, but nothing in the works so far.

Hi Everyone,
I've got a Tamiya Daimler Dingo I thinks it's actually a Daimler Mk II) armoured car. I've started it, but not progressed very far. It's a very old kit, and a tough build, to say the least. I even bought an Eduard photoetched set for it, and still couldn't get motivated to get on with it. Maybe you guys would care to push me along a bit, in other words, can I join in the festivities here ?
Thanks, I hope.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Matt that looks awesome, congrats on a superb job Thumbs Up [tup]. I can't wait to see it finished.

Tanky great looking progress on your pit.

Quintin Wow awesome job on your figure, I really admire your skill especially with the face and eyes Thumbs Up [tup].

Jules the Tamiya Matilda is looking kinda doubtful at this stage so could you please update by builds for the GB to be the Tamiya 1/48 BF 109 E4/7 Black 8 JG27 and the Tamiya 1/48 Kubelwagen Type 82 DAK JG27. Oh and Jules I really like your idea of giving a page reference for the completed builds.

:::Progress Update:::
I have been having a really fun time pottering with my Tamiya 1/48 DAK Kubelwagen. I've finished all of the assembly now I just have to paint it. I tell you guys what. If you are looking for a relaxing quick build, you could do a lot worse than the little 1/48 Kubel kits from Tamiya. All they really need to do now is release a Jeep.

Cheers
Darren

Hey all!

I managed to finish my 1/16 Feldmarschall Rommel over the weekend! All that needs to be done, is the base and a final coat of matt varnish.

Here are a few pics in the meantime!

Cheers!

dont listen to them, good looking office my man!!! I do wish that I had added an AM pit to my 109, that would have completed the piece wonderfully. The kit one is nice but aftermarket is always so much better.

Good first pics of the pit!!!!
