Oh man, would completely fictional, not neccessarily based on existing weaponry, tank be allowed?!?! I've always wanted to just build a Mammoth (I think that's what they're called) from the PC game Red Alert. Quad tracks, BIG GUNS! Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

I haven't quite decided yet, but it will be something whacky...probably something on a T-34 chassis, but who knows. I have a couple of Nichimo King TIgers which really aren't worth building, so maybe I'll do something with them...

I figure we'd start June 1 and go until December 1st....

Anything goes, as long as it's ludicrous, whacky, or off-the-wall. It can be any era, any scale. It can be purely fictional, or it can be a feasible, believable platform of your design. The only catch is, you have to make up a story to go with the vehicle...

Concept ideas...

A Sherman with a Panther turret.
King Tiger AA tank
Krupp Protze with a quad 20mm or 37mm AA gun
M3 halftrack with a turret on the back...hmm...now there's an idea I like!!! (that's mine!)

So there you have it...something we can goof around with.

Zok, sure...anything goes, as long as it never existed as an operational or prototypical design...that's the beauty of this, the only rule is that there are no rules.

Sounds like fun to me...here's my concept...

The US provided the Russians with Lend-Lease M3 halftracks. Since their BA series of armored cars was a bit long in the tooth by 1942, they decided to mount a T-34/76 turret on top of a modified halftrack body....so there's my concept...

Tamiya M3 halftrack kit, old Tamiya T-34 kit, and lots of sheet styrene. I figured that if the Germans can mount a 75mm on a 251 chassis, the Russians could mount a 76mm on an M3 chassis...

sounds like a cool idea and it'd be a great build but i have doubts about practicality of such a design in real life. the 34/76 turrets were never all that comfortable. they were also well protected and required more resources than just the same gun in field artillery form. since the half track would not be well protected i don't really see an advantage of having a well protected gun mounted on a vulnerable chassis. the turrets were mounted on armored trains but those actually had armor.

on the other hand, the turrets were mounted on gun ships and i guess a halftrack with a turret would be just as good as a tank when dug in hull-down.

not criticising or anything, just got me thinking. any opinions?

Great idea !!! Perhaps take the concept of your " very own " Tiger,T-34,etc. ....
How would YOU modify it given the technology of the time, available parts,
captured materials,& of course,finish to taste. Think,win the lottery,buy
a WWII "hulk",& go wild!!! Just the thing to putter around in on your new
estate????

Goatmonkey, I oughta slap you. The whole point of the group build is to do something ridiculous!!!! Banged Head [banghead]

How impractical is a T-34 turreted M3 than a V1 Pz IV, or a MausV2 launcher?

Just for that, you're going to build a Long Tom mounted on the back of a DUKW.

i was thinking i could put a quad 50cal on a 251 hull with the m16 track suspension and no front wheels it could be a story of cut off germans building a vehicle a-team style in a time of need

There ya go!!!

It'll look whacky with no front wheels, that's for sure. I had thought about a series of tow-behind trailered weapons, was thinking about a quad on trailer towed by a CCKW that would act as the ammo carrier...

Lots of ideas, keep 'em comin'. Now, who wants to do the badge?

I was experimenting yesterday and I found something that is practical (possible experimental), therefore could validly pass as a whatif. Of course I'm not going to say what it is, but it will take some major modifications to pull it off. My boy already has grasped this build and he's all in. I think we have destoyed about 6-7 kits for this build.

i said that because the idea had a backstory to it and it sounded like a serioius one. I'm not too interested in the DUKW, how about an E-100 turret on an ME-262 instead? Smile [:)]

OK gang, we have a badge and a name...and we start officially on June 1, but I'm not holding anyone to it.

I do have a simple rule...since this GB requires a certain level of imagination and clever ideas, I would like to request that if someone is doing a Kubelwagen with an 88 on it, not to steal his idea and do a Jeep with a 105mm just because you couldn't think of anything on your own. That sound fair and reasonable??

I'll start updating the first post to reflect the members and projects they sign up for. The sooner you announce your subject, the less likely you are to get a copycat.

lol, of course...all you need to do is something to it on June 1st...maybe take it off the shelf and dust it...and there...you've worked on it within the allotted time frame!! :-)

Nice job, looks very intimidating, yet, the color says you'd rather head for the mall than engage in all-out warfare, but you're equipped for either!

That was a junker kit (the old Tamiya Panther) that spends it's life as a test bed for techniques. I wanted to see how hand painting something would go,,,,,I want to do a Korean War era tank from Operation Ripper. The ones with the Tiger schemes, but I didn't want to ruin a decent M46 or M4A3E8 kit

Don't have much money right now, but I might try for a flying tank of some sort. I have a crappy old kit of a bi-plane, and I can blend it with the something heavy like a panther, or TigerTongue [:P]!!!

The story could be something like, The army's need for air support took another roll when general NAME came up with the idea of the flying TANK OF SOME KIND. The concept became a raging succes and hundreds were built!!

scratch it. cut a wide vertical slit in the front of the turret and put the mortar into it. all you need for the mortar is two tubes that fit into each other snugly, there's your barrel. add some little tubes and wires for coolness effect and you're set. Smile [:)]

Back with an update. I had some rectangular pieces of plastic that came with my tamiya pz 2 so I took those and was wondering how on earth i was going to attach them to the turret when I thought. Why not do zimmerit? So I did and well its my first time but im not as picky since its not on a "real" model. Ill get some pics of my progress shortly though.

That's a funny badge!

I can't wait to start on my own build -- which should be a fairly straightforward modificaton (he said, moments before taking that step that plunged him into the abyss) ....

I'm building a flak Maus -- a Maus with one or maybe two 10.5 cm flak guns mounted on it.

Don't laugh -- I wouldn't be surprised if the Germans thought of it.

An alternate idea was the Maus Infanterie Panzer -- a Maus except with one machine gun mounted as the main armament, in honor of the Panzer I. Tongue [:P] At least I can display the Flak Maus with a straight face ....

I think I'll join this build. My hobby store has tons of old, cheap models I can scavenge from. I could tell you what I have in mind, but then I'd have to kill you. So, all I need is some duct tape, a U-boat, various chopper parts, and some torpedo tubes. Actually, I have no idea what I'm going to build. Wait....... wait, an idea's coming; nope, I lost it.

Hey guys. Is this still going on? If it is, I'd like to join in. I'm not sure what I'd build, though. Maybe a towed gun with a blown hemi? I dunno. I'll think of something. Later.

Sure, we're still on...welcome to the build...instead of keeping track of the list at the front, just swipe the badge and use that instead.

I'm in the middle of moving into a new house, so my building time is minimal right now, I'll probably jump into this in July/August. I need to procure a HEMMIT and an M109 from Evilbay or a swap meet, so I'm not spending huge amounts of money on this one....

Started building my Flak-Maus last night. It may or may not be as just-not-right as I wanted it to be, but so be it. I've got the Dragon 72nd scale Maus, and it's quite a sweet little kit -- of course, this being the Maus, it has a million wheels, but they are cleverly engineered to go together smoothly. I put together most of the bogies in only around 25 minutes (I was pressed for time last night). And once that's done, you are virtually finished building the kit. The Maus was a big box, basically.

I've got two of the cheap little Fujimi 10,5cm AA guns that I'll rig somehow to put atop the Maus -- luckily they give you the dummy-weight turret, and I think I'll use that as a form of kugelblitz-type turret for the FlakMaus. Since they give you that in addition to the "normal" turret for the Maus, I'll probably build both up and display it mostly with the real turret, taking the flak turret out and putting it on the kit and cackling maniacally when I am all alone (scary thought, no?).

If this and the E-100 are any indication of the direction Dragon 72nd scale kits are going in, then I am very pleased -- these are both very handsome and very fun-to-build little kits. (Well, actually kind of big kits.)

I think I may have just had a stroke of genius. Does the build have to be based on actual tank parts, or can it be on something else, say a tractor? Because I saw a Cat 75c and was thinking about how cool it would look with a Panther(or something) turret on top in place of the cab. Just for visualization, heres a pic of the Cat. Later.

Pretty sure it was the Maus, but then again it never made it into production. Of the production types, it was probably the Tiger II or the Jadgtiger.

Hey, no one ever said it had to be in production. If they had a kit of one of those giant German tanks that were propelled by four U-boat sized engines, I would use it. The bigger, the better.

You might try this turret: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=MKR35903
It would be a lot cheaper than buying the whole tank.

Well, you asked what German tank was the longest, and as far as I can tell, in order for something to be a German tank, it had to have been a German tank.

I keep picturing something like a 'slammed' Jagdpanther. Low profile wheels and tires instead of road wheels, wide tracks (from a larger scale?), ground effects, the lot. BIG exhausts coming out from under the chassis, bold graphics (in tasteful shades of camo). Gotta have a wing on the back deck, and extra points for under-chassis lights. A couple of nitrous oxide tanks attached T-34 style to the sides of the hull would also be fun.

Think 'The Fast and the Furious' meets the Waffen-SS.

Sorry, but I'm not going to build this; if someone out there does want to, go for it!

I like it: "Pimp my Panzer". I can see it now. Also, I will lift my veil of secrecy surrounding my project. For those of you who haven't figured it out, I plan on building a "Bewegliche Kometstartrampe" (Mobile Comet Launch Pad). In other words, a Maus capable of firing a Me 163 Komet. Does anybody make a launch-ramp for a V1 rocket (preferably plastic)? I know Accurate Armour makes one in resin(?) but that's too expensive.

Who makes an available Willy's jeep or any jeep for that matter in 1/72 If I get ahold of at least 2 i'll try to throw together a "stretch limo" willy's. I know theres plenty in 1/35 but I don't want to do it in 1/35

Someboby once asked what colour scheme a friend of mine was doing his porsche king tiger in? He replied "Gulf" and proceeded to tear out the turret ring and place in a racing cockpit from a 1/24 car, that answered that and Steve Mc Queen would have loved it for Le Mans!
