I was meaning to ask something along those lines myself. What are we regarding as a "heavy bomber", since the definition has become rather cloudy since WW2?

Before and during the war, a "heavy bomber" was an aircraft that could carry more than 8000lbs of ordnance to distant targets, and were, generally, the largest aircraft around.
But then the lines of distinction started to blur as even fighters were capable of carrying the 2000lb of ordnance that previously categorised "light bombers".

More recently, the definition of "heavy bomber" has been regarded as an aircraft with a range greater than 8000km or capable of carrying nuclear ALCMs.

If we use the yardstick of ordnance payload or ALCM-carrying capability, many modern strike aircraft, technically, fit the definition of "heavy bomber". The F-15E can lift a weapons payload in the region of 24000lbs, although it lacks the "legs" to reach those distant targets. The F/A-18 is capable of lifting nearly 18000lbs and is equipped for launching ALCMs.

[As a side note, the practice of using aircraft as platforms for launching cruise missiles seems to have been abandoned, especially in the two most recent US offensives, in favour of using ship-launched and sub-launched cruise missles instead. Why waste jet fuel and risk pilots and multi-million dollar aircraft when you don't have to, right?]

However, if we opt for the basics of the traditionally accepted definition of a "heavy bomber" i.e. extreme range and large size, the list suddenly shrinks dramatically.

I opened the box a half an hour ago. I was amezed by the detail this model has. My Do 18 for the WW II GB has a little detail, so I excpected nothing, and what I see is really great.

I started to paint the cockpit. Pictures will follow, as soon as possible.

Well despite my initial burst of overzealousness, I haven't had a chance to even look at the Lancaster yet. I spent the weekend up to my eyes in Spitfire Mk.IX (WW2 GB), Kfir C-7 (that kit has been "in progress" so long that sometimes I think it just stays there to irritate and frustrate me), and an Su-34 thats nearly done. And then there's still an SR-71 and an F-117, both also "in progress".

I've realised that I just seem to have too many "in progress" kits at the same time .... so I'm attempting to clear the bench for my GB projects .... I really want to get started on the Lanc.

I have not even started on my build yet. I will start it tonight. I have been busy with my Birthday on the start date. I went and raced my 1:1 race car and had a pretty hard crash in the wall comming out of turn 4, with help from another driver. I am fine but the car did not fair so good. I will have to replace the entire rear end and the brake system to be able to return to the track. I will crack open the box on the B-29 tonight and have some progress pix soon.

Well this last week has not been good for me. As I posted at the top of this page my birthday was on the start date and I wrecked my 1:1 racecar. The I got a slow start on the build and on Thursday I lost my job and found out that I would have to move from my house. So I have been busy this weekend finding a new house and trying to find a new job. I have found a new house at this time that I have been working on moving into, but I have also made some progress on my build so here goes the cockpit.

I hope that you likethese shots.

Thanks for the good words for this build. As for I have said in my last post that build progress will come to an almost dead stop. Atleast until I have found a new job, and move into the new house. I will try to keep you all posted on progress and all. Thanks again.

Nice pics of the interior. Looks like you are building a b-29. If so, what scale?

Hey Sarge, I have two B-29A 1/48 scales sitting pretty in my closet. I lucked out and got them as gifts. Do you know of a good website I can buy decals for the 1/48 scale?

well, i finally did some more work on the lancaster again last night. and this time it actually involved glue! i'm hoping to get started in earnest over the weekend.

had a major disappointment this week ... some kits that my brother and i ordered from greatmodels finally arrived, and what i was expecting to be a nifty vacuformed kit turned out to be a "conversion" .... not sure what you're supposed to convert since it was a totally new design, but there you have it.

the airmodel ju288 (kit 235), and pretty much all you get for your $34 is the vacuformed sheet containing the fuselage, wing, and tail bits; a clear sheet containing the canopy and side bubbles; and what appears to be a small injection moulded sprue with a few spinner options and the raw plastic to create prop blades i.e. flat rectangles. and that is it! no cockpit whatsoever (despite the huge transparent canopy), no interior detail on the vacuformed fuselage bits, no landing gear, not even any of the guns.

the instructions even tell you that you might want to consider using the bmw radial engines from the italeri ju188 kit (since ju188e-1 and the ju288 shared that engine)!

talk about being dumped into the deep end of scratchbuilding! at least the included scale drawings appear to be scaled correctly and include 2 views of all the components required for building the landing gear. no such scale drawings exist for the cockpit or interior detail unfortunately.

ah well, after getting over the initial trauma, i must say that i'm really looking forward to my attempt at scratchbuilding the undercarriage for starters. the cockpit detail is bound to be far more "interesting"!

alright then .... work on the lancaster is progressing decidely well. pretty much finished with the interior details, props and spinners done, tailplanes are already attached to the fuselage halves, upper and lower wings are already joined together.

got hold of my brother's cybershot this morning, so i'll snap some shots this evening ... given up on trying to get the focal length right using a samsung D500 phone camera!

No, the would not let us. I was low on film so I had to choose my shots wisely. I shot the wheel well for reference on future builds. I got as much shots around the plane before I ran out of film. This was at the Galveston, TX air show last year. I plan on being there this year, but this time with a digital camera. I have been facinated with the b-B-17 for many years. I am building one for this group build. I am a little overwhelmed on the project. In the past I seem to start builds and stop because I am not satisfied. In partaking in these group builds I hope it will push me to finish the project no matter what. I am sure they will come out decent and maybe one day I will put out a show stomper. But I guess you have to start somewhere, right?

The Dambuster is nearly there ..... just a bit of cleaning up left before getting serious with the airbrush.

Unfortunately, its going to have to wait for a while ... packing this week for the big move over the weekend.

Hi All,

Well, I finally seem to have settled in, after a fashion at least, and am ready to start contemplating hauling out all those frozen modelling projects. The partially-built and completed kits handled the move quite well ... the only fatality was the SR-71 which suffered the seperation of both front landing gear doors (just have to reattach them).

I am ecstatic about my latest acquisition though .... gotta love the internet .... i managed to locate a mint AMT 1/72 XB-70 kit and an owner who is prepared to part with it!
