Hal, nice job on the Hurricane pit.

Ok, I took the Hase He 111 out of the cupboard to have a look, and before I knew what was happening.....

I've tried to replicate some of the detail in the Eduard PE set, with PE from the spares box and some scratchbuilt details such as the trim wheel, and throttles.

I started off the interior painting with an overall covering of matt black, followed up with RLM02 and various colours for the details.

All now Futured and awaiting the application of a wash.

I've also assembled the wings, engines and rear stabs.

As for the Do 24, only the engines are left requiring painting, the t having been Futured ready for masking up for codes and crosses. The only decals on this one will be the swastikas on the tail fins.

Laugh [(-D]  I just hate it when that happens to me Karl.  Looks great though! Thumbs Up [tup]

As for everyone else I'm enjoying all the progress pics.  Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  Wish I had some of my own but with holidays, company and home renovations I'm waaaaaay behind schedule.  I hope to get my current build finished before the end of the month and then I can start the Br 20M.

Cheers

Guys, glad you like the He 111 so far.

Tec, what happened with the resin then, that you had to re-paint it?

Dave, I was only looking to take a look at the parts breakdown! Better leave the Hase 1/32 Fw190 well alone in the cupboard.

Progress Update

Applied a burnt umber and black watercolour wash to the interior of the He 111 last night, now it just needs dry brushing followed by a matt coat.

The Do24 is now ready for the application of the red crosses and serials.

Karl Had to do a repaint as I had actually forgot to prime the parts thus finding that the paint dried to a kind of satin sheen rather than matt. foolish me

Thanks all!
Karl, people think I am nuts for working on 1/43 F1 cars, but if I know my kits that He111 is 1/72 right?  I bow to you sir, Bow [bow] very nice work on a small subject.  The Dornier is simply awesome.

Nice c/p Hal!

Karl, excellent work as always but that is one uuuuuuugly Dornier.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Dornier must have been the beholder of a dozen beers when he thought that one up!!

(said with dodgy German accent)

'......ooond ve take dis bratwurst oooooond stick da rooler on top..........'

Well, the fuselage halves are together on the 109.

I feel quite good about this Tamiya kit, and after coming off the Magister kit it's nice to have things that line up like.....................the WHOLE kit!!!

Got the LED in place to illuminate the radio compartment. I hated the thought of folding the PE and it being to dark to see anything after the halves were together.

ATM I have a couple of bare wires hanging out at the wing root and was thinking about how to run them to the base where the battery will sit.

Then it hit me.......................... brake lines!

I'll use them as brake lines and poke them through the wheels after I drill a small hole in the bottom of them.

Gawwwd I'm a thinker eh

Sean, like the brake lines idea, stroke of genius.

Were you sober at the time?Wink [;)]

I actually think the big D, and it is big, is rather elegant, especially when viewed from the side.

The RAAF operated them during WWII, very handy with their 20mm turret guns!

Progress Update

Application of the crosses and codes has not gone well, with much bleeding of paint, and gnashing of teeth.Disapprove [V]

Due to the size of the serials I used 2'' masking tape, trouble is it just can't cope with an AB!

So now having applied all the serials, I'm having to mask them off again, to paint out the bleeds!

Nothing doing on the He111 for obvious reasons.

Dave, Karl & Hal (& anyone else who's work I have viewed and envied over the last couple of days)-very nice work guys.  Karl-sorry to hear about the painting issues.  Been there, done that....and continue to do so.

Sean-great idea on using the brake lines.  I find it frustrating to spend a great deal of time on the cockpit on details that will never be seen again.

Question for the group-I picked up some MM acrylic for the RML (or is it RLM....) 65/02/71 for my bf109.  The 65 (light blue) looked almost white.  OK, it does look white in the bottle.  Stirred well, hoping that it would turn light blue.  Since I was going to paint a 'practice' model (an unbuilt Monogram 109) to test various 'sponge applied camo' for Wick's plane, I painted away.  It is white.  Whitter (is that a word) than the primer that I was trying to cover.  I'm assuming that I got a bad batch...at least I hope so.  I'm going to go to a different LHS tomorrow and view their selection.  However, to be safe, I may go with Tamiya paints.  If so, what are the corresponding Tamiya codes for 65/02/71?

 Thanks in advance.

Bob, sounds like you got a bad batch. I use MM Acrylic regularily and RLM 65 is definitley not white. Sorry, don't know the Tamiya equivilants. The one gripe I have with MM Acrylic is the size of their printing on the bottles. I've picked up the wrong can of paint by accident more than once. (guess I should start carrying my reading glasses with me when I go)

Bob you have a PM inbound.

Also the colors you are after are as follows:

RLM 65 = XF23

RLM 02 = XF-22 + XF-49

RLM 71 = XF-61

If you can get them, try Gunze acrylics they provide an excellent set of RLM colors OOB.

Karl you are putting us all (well me anyway) to shame.  Please keep posting more pics they look great.

Oh and a quick question, what scheme is the Dornier going to end up in?

Cheers

Darren-thanks.  You have a pm coming back also.  btw-is the RLM a 50/50 mix of XF22 & XF49?

Karl-yes, I just turned 50 and have to take my reading glasses whenever I go to the LHS!  I'm heading out now to a different LHS and see if their MM RLM 65 is correct.  If not, I'll go the Tamiya route.  Unfortunatly, MM acrylic & Tamiya are my only two choices (really don't want to go the enamal route.)

Darren, this Dornier will be the death of me!

If I'd known it was going to be this bloody awkward I would never have started it.

Here's a pic of the scheme I'm aiming for.

It's not a particularly accurate profile of the AC I'm building, but it gives you an idea of the overall scheme.

I second everything you've said about Gunze, definitely the best acrylics for my money.

Bob, hope you sought out the RLM 65, it should be a fairly bright blue. Bright that is compared with RLM 76!

Progresss Update

The Dornier is currently hibernating!!!!

I've touched out all the bleeds, now I need to remask the letters that need retouching, but that can wait a few days, or it'll all end up in the bin.

Here was the Big D as of last night.

The Heinkel's fuselage is together, following a matt coat to the interior.

Just looked at the already assembled wings for the 111, and realised that none of the panel lines on the front of the wings match up, despite the engine nacelles fitting perfectly? I feel some filling and rescribing coming on.

Looking real good on both builds Karl.  Don't let the Do actually kill you... that would be badWink [;)]

Slow progress on the 109.  Weather has turned a bit cooler and it’s has been hard to get thoughts of, and partaking of, BBQ chicken, beer ( if you only ken how long to took me to type this so someone could read it) and cigars.  But here is a little progress.

LG and doors done... pre-shaded with a Sharpie.

And detail added to the new rear deck.  The hinge for the storage compartment is a piece of stretched sprue softened with Tenax and textured with a knife blade and the latch is a PE goody that was in the Aries set.

Karl & Marc-nice work guys.  Very good progress.

I was able to find the properly mixed RLM 65 @ my 'second choice' LHS-they have a better (newer) MM acrylic paint selection but are 40 - 50% higher on their kits  (and not as good a selection).  Shot the proper paint over the test model-disaster (even though it is a test mule)-no adhesion-makes me think the first bottle was clear gloss acrylic.  Nothing that some Windex and more primer won't fix.

Karl-Seeing your sea rescue Dornier reminds me of a story I read in a Battle of Britian book (Time-Life series).  Seems that the British took to shooting down the German sea rescue planes (red cross & all).  Hitler order the Luftwaffe to shoot at parachuting British pilots at that point.  Adolf Galland refused and ordered the pilots under his command to not shoot at the parachuting pilots either.

Marc, that's not a gun sight, it's a fly you've speared with a toothpick!Wink [;)]

Kidding aside, that is amazing.

You really are working wonders with that Eduard 1/144 109!Wink [;)]

Bob, the RAF took to shooting down Seenotedienst, ie SAR aircraft after they started shadowing coastal convoys.

One He 59 shot down was found to contain cameras which had been used to take photos of ships engaged in convoy operations, presumably for intel. purposes.

There were a few instances of RAF aircrew being machine gunned by Luftwaffe pilots while descending in their parachutes, however there were instances when RAF pilots returned the 'favour, particularly the Poles.

Progress Update

The engines are now attached to the wings of the He 111, and I've assembled the undercarriage, which took a little trial and error as Hase's instructions are somewhat vague on the exact placement of the various components.

I've also scratched a new IP using my new punch'n'die set. It's not up to Eduard's standards, but it will look better than nothing.
