QUOTE: So Eric, any progress on Wittmann?? I looked at the site where you had the pics posted this morning. Just wondered how you made out with him today.

Eric,

I have the bodies sanded and primed. The faces and hands have the base coat of Desert Yellow applied.

I am also beginning to weather the Tiger Evil [}:)]

We have wash!

Well, before I started, I created some "Battle Damage" to the rear. I also did the same to the side fenders. I added the bullet holes afterward and then was ready to apply the wash.

For the rear, I used Lamp Black Artist Oil and mixed it with a bit of Brown pastel chalk. This gives a more "built up" appearance of dirt, grease and grime. For the top engine access panes and screens, I used a straight wash with no chalks.

The next step will be to add the Burnt Umber wash. This will be done to the entire Tiger:

Eric: Great job so far! I'm watching your progress closely as I have a Tiger I want to weather also, and it will be my first time. Mine is painted the factory grey. I've read so many articles on how to do it, but yours with the pics is the first one showing step by step procedures for a tank, which helps a lot! Spraying the buff really gives it the dusty look, but does following it with the gloss for the wash defeat the purpose of the initial buff? Does a gloss really need to be applied before the wash? What effects would you get if it's done on a flat finish? Also, for the rear wash, what thinner did you use and how much of it vs. the black oil paint? Could you have used an acrylic black paint instead? What proportions are you going to use for the umber wash? Lester Bow [bow]

Sorry to interupt your Build Group Guys.
Does any body know of a better speed controller for the RC 1/16th Tigers.
The Tamiya alternatives I have found are all for RC cars which give a scale speed of around 90mph!

Thanks for the compliments. Ok, let's me answer your questions:

1.The gloss coat will not affect the buff. The gloss coat is only a surface medium for the wash to flow on and will be taken care of in the final stage when I Dull-Coat (I use Testor's Dull) If you apply it after the wash, you will have white specs on the wash itself.

2. I use Gloss coat because it lets the wash flow evenly into and around details. It also makes removal of unwanted wash easy. If you would wash with a Flat or dull coat base, the wash would be difficult to remove because the surface would be "rough"

3. As for thinning, I use 100% Mineral Spirits. As for how much to use, it's a matter of how dark you want your wash to be. I usually use about 75% Spirits to 25% Artist Oil. I have a small pallette that I use and if it's filled with the Mineral Spirits, it only takes a bit of the oils (about the size of a BB to get the correct mixture) You DON'T want it to be a paint. You want it very thin, so it runs around details freely.

4. As for using Acrylics for a wash, I have never done it. I have used Enamels for my washes (diluted about the same as stated above) Acrylics tend to dry too quickly and don't get a chance to really set around details. 1 Tube of Artist Oil paints, cost about $3.00-$4.00 and will last about 2000 models! Tongue [:P] They really go a long way.

5. I use basically the same amount for all the washes 75/25. Again, you want it to look very thin and not be a paint. A good example for the Burnt Umber is, when thinned, it will look like a strong coffee color.

6. I almost forgot to mention this [:0] With the Gloss Coat on, now is the best time to apply your decals (after you have finished all the wash) Decals won't stick very well to a flat surface and once dry they will have a Silver appearance. Get your decals on then spray your Dull Coat!

Good Luck! If you have any other questions I will be glad to answer them (If I can)

Keeps on looking better Eric!! Loving the progress pics!! Big Smile [:D]

So here's mine for today. I finished up the jack for my Tiger. The handle isn't attached yet as I need to get the mounts done to see what position it should be in.

Here is the Tiger with the Burnt Umber wash applied. Once it's completely dry (overnight) I will decal then Dull Coat. I can begin rusting various areas. Tracks will be on soon. I want to first spray a bit of light Brown, on the underside, to simulate dirt and mud.

I will now be concentrating on the equiptment and the crew Wink [;)]

I need to get a shot of it tomorrow morning. Bad lighting for this pic Sad [:(]

You could try a resistor in the motor lead to reduce voltage. If you are using the mechanical speed controller (not solid state) you could shorten the linkage or limit its travel so it can't go all the way to the "high" contact. You could also use a potentiometer in the motor leadafter the speed controller, this would allow you to "dial in" the speed.

Great work Eric .... now that you have this done you'll be able to get the Tiger up on blocks in the back yard with the rest of your vehicles. Wink [;)]Wink [;)]

Yeah, but ya know Robert, German Shepards aren't known for layin out on or under the porch, so he'll always be missing something.

And ya know, the black forest does have several large trees big enough to hang his tanks engine from while he's "workin on it".....

Frieda.......pass me another beer would ya....

Well, with just little detailing and weathering to go, the next progress pic you will see, is when this beasty is done. I will still be putting up the step-by-steps on the website.

Hi Guys,

Add me to the list of those that have'nt started.

I've made it to step 3 or 4 and have completed 1 front PE fender but now I've come to a scretching halt.
I can't make up my mind.... to Photo-Etch or NOT to Photo-Etch .... that is the questionBanged Head [banghead]
I just can't make up my mind. I think about how long the PE will add and read some of the posts here about parts falling off and such and then I decide "Thats it, NO PE" .. save it for a possible static model or sell it......but then I see the GREAT pics here of those who DID add em and I'm back at the same problem...aaaahhhhhhhCensored [censored]

So if you don't mind, can you guys give me some advice and hints or tips please? I really wana start on this. I'm already waiting on parts from Willy, my metal tracks and a CD with lots of Tiger info so that I can decide on color and things like that, nothing that will stop me right now.

Right now there is no one near me that I can battle with (maybe 1 but not sure yet) so most running will be just me and my daughter once I get my Gepard running again.

Thanks!

Hi guys,

I know I've been gone for the past few days and I've missed out on all the progress you've made. Erock, that paint job rocks! I can't wait to see her all finished up. I gave my Tiger a "dirt" wash with thinned buff/black and she looks great. I'm off to the website now to see all the progress!

Hello Again,

While I'm at it (the begging for info), Is anyone willing to also give me some help with weathering and stuff like that? I am NO WHERE near as good as you guys are and have never really done much of this. I have bought LOTs of supplies based on what I have read here and other places but still not sure just how to do this. I bought 2 varity packs of pastel chalk, weathering powders, washes and rusting checmicals from Micro-Mark, I have a CD "how too" on my x-mas list (but that's geared tward trains and I'm hoping it will help with my tank) , burnt umber and one other color of oil-based paint and I have a few books or mags (but most assume you already know some).

If anyone feels like writing something HERE or sending me a email please let me know!

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

If you go to the Tiger group build site (the link is in my signature) you will see that I have a pretty detailed step-by-step on the wash & weathering process. I believe it's around page 4-5 in my build pages.

If you need more info or more detail, I will be glad to email you with an answer.

Taking a break from the detailing, I decided to look through some older copies of FSM. I just happened to pick up the April, 2001 issue. It has a chart of Tiger Colors. BAM, there it was.....

Tiger 1's starting year 1942, Base of Dark Yellow (check), Camo of Red Brown and Dark Green (check), Numbers with white outline (check) and in remarks.....

Ambush scheme worn by "Normandy" tanks. I now am on a quest to find out (if possible) how or if, the #S04 was in Normandy, made it's way to Italy then to Russia. If it did, that's one heck of a fighting record!

Claymore, GingerWeir:

No Resistors! All that does is waste your batteries. Either adjust your top end with the endpoint adjustments on your radio, or else use fewer cells in a battery (like 5?)

The way we R/Cers tackled this was adding a gear reduction. Check out Willy Loewer's site: www.CustomRCModels.com , ~but~ you need to know which model of gearboxes you have.

Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me if ya have any further questions.
