Eric: Great look with the roadwheels! Bow [bow] Did you flick the mud on the wheels while the dull coat was still wet to get it tostick? Shooting the second pass of dull coat, did it tone down the chalk effects, so did you have to lay it on heavier than it looks in the end? Man, I am so eager to see how this turns out! Approve [^] Yeah!! [yeah] Lester

WhiteWolf McBride Thanks for the scoop. I haven't done much with R/C most of my electrical experiance comes from work. If you want to use a 90 VDC 1/2 HP motor (sure would beat an RS 540 eh?) for your tank Dart makes an excellent controller if you have a 120 VAC source handy...Big Smile [:D]

You'd be doing wheelies...well trackies anywayTongue [:P]

Thanks Lester!

Yes indeed, I flicked the pastels on while the Dull Coat was still wet. I also gave them another coat to seal it.

Just to ease my curiosity, I had to test fit the tracks before weathering them. Now it's time to dirty them up Evil [}:)]

Hello Eric,

I have always had a yen to do a Tiger 1. So doing some research on the web about the Tiger I stumbled across your website and others via Fine Scale Forum. I am very much impressed with the work that you have done. so much so that I have jumped off the deep end feet first and bought the Tamiya full r/c kit and the Aber 16 k01. I may have opened Pandoras' box with the Aber kit. I am presently assembling information before I start because I'm not sure if I want to do the tank the way it is or update it to an intermediate version. I have been doing model trains for almost 20 years so any suggestions or advise anybody has will be most appreciated. I am new to this whole Forum so I hope that I have postd this in the correct venue.

First off, Welcome to the forums, irontrail!

I agree with, the best way to begin (for me anyhow) was to gather as much information as possible. I have many Tiger pics and books but still did a lot of research before I began.

If you do decide to upgrade, Okieboy (Roy) did a tremendous job of converting his to a later series Tiger. If you go the our Tiger Phobia site, just click on his name at the bottom for his progress pics. Erush has some awesome detail pics of the working fenders he has done and some fill work under those fenders (again, available at the bottom of the Tiger page)

It's also a good idea to plan out, before you start with the Aber PE. I thought that I would have used much more from it but, Tamiya's attention to details was pretty much on the mark. There were still just a few things missing though (especially the detail on the rear of the smoke dischargers)

Would love to see your progress once you decide!
Good Luck!

Guys:

Starting to think I should add my 2¢ to the photo pages, with the RC tips (with Erock's clearance of course)

No advance on mine, gonna tackle the reinforcement plate plans today so I can hand them to the neighbor for cutting. Then its finish those damned side-skirts, and start on something else... (PE-wise, that is)

Nice job on the paint & weathering Erock Bow [bow] makes me feel ~very~ inadequate Sigh [sigh] ... lets see if I can handle a basic camo job come the spring with my Paasche. Got a lotta work to do over the winter.

Oh, on another note , Dirk's got my order (& the helmets *wink*) ready to go, so it may be here before Xmas. And I realised I have a set ot track hangers coming , for both T1 & KT! And at long last the images are sorted as well. I hope the CD will be with my order so we can post the updated list and images for everyone.

Thats about it from me for now... hope to have more by the end of the week.

Great idea WW. If you want to write something up, I will create a seperate page to deal with the subject. Also, if you have some pics of your build, I will get them posted (make sure you have a description/comments to go with the pics)

I would say that, by this weekend, my Tiger will be let loose. Doing the final touches now and gonna' finish up the crew.

Jeff,
Thanks for the compliments. I hope I helped out somewhat.

Eric, nice job bro! I can't wait to see what you do with the white wash. Hey
White Wolf, thanks again for the order to Dirk. I'm looking forward to getting those helmets on!

Note: To the guys putting metal tracks on their Tigers... The founder of Mid-Atlantic Armored Division (MAAD) has done considerable research into the gearboxes that Tamiya uses in their tanks and the effects that certain things like metal tracks have on them and the abbrevisted version is that metal tracks will greatly increase the wear and tear on your gearboxes, so you'll have to baby it. Participating in tank battles with metal tracks will chew them up.

Guys:

Sure, I'll try to start catalogging all the RC tips into one file , with pictures if I can.

I've done the blueprints for Tiger 1, King Tiger & Sherman plates, but let me get mine made before I say how accurate they are. I did do one thing with mine that may seem odd: I put my Sherman plate ~inside~ to avoid all those cutouts for the suspension mounts.

Gearbox oddities:

I discovered something with the Static Tiger 1 chassis and the gearboxes: the holes for the 'toy' mount make use of the holes for the DMD gearboxes, but the last hole does NOT match my Type 1 boxes.
It ~does~ match up perfectly with the alternate hole-mounts for my Type 2 Sherman boxes though... Why?

I suspect its because the 56005 Sherman & 56007 King Tiger Porsche boxes were ~different~. They did not have the alternate stud-mount holes! Yet another thing I have to watch out for if I order Type 1 boxes!

Erock, that looks great!
I'm kinda hoping you DON'T whitewash it!
It looks too good as is!
Your decision, though. I'm sure I'd be looking for my socks again if you whitewashed it!

No Whitewash!

The Tiger is COMPLETE! I am now working on the crew and the entire project will be finished. I was actually figuring that, I would be done with the project in January (January 14th, to be specific) That's the day Wittmann was awarded the Knights Cross. However, the excitement of completing the build is too much, I cannot wait! Tongue [:P]

Pictures will be posted sometime this weekend.

Erock:

Why not put a very light whitewash on, as in its partially washed off with a rainstorm or was scrubbed off, after fading the paint underneath (like a bleach-job)? That way you keep the good camo with the whitewash effect too.

Just a random idea...

Guys (& Gals?)

A friend has told me he has some 'pre-release' decals for the Tiger 1 that make up for inadequacies in the stock Tamiya decals. I'm asking you guys if any of you would be interested in them (or suggestions on other units to be made)

They are for the s.Pz.Abt. 502 (Mammoth Heavy Panzer Battalion) who fought for Army Group North on the Eastern Front. This battalion was home to famous commanders Otto Carius & Hans Bolter.

One sheet of waterslide decals offers the markings for seven of the Tiger 1s of the 502nd, and even offers a myriad of 'balkenkruse' cross variants used throughout the Russian campaign. They even got the sizes right (one of his objections to Tamiya's) And they have the cross on a square black field as was used in the summer-fall of 43.

( if this set sells, the company will be making others. My friend has suggested the next be the 503 (They served on both fronts & were the first to get the KTs). He thought this would help them appeal to both the T1 & KT folks.

So, any takers? The price is $19.95 & shipping, and I think he only has two sheets available. I wanted one, but I'm short at the mo. E-mail me and I'll forward his addy to you.
