Gearbox oddities
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 6:17 PM
WhiteWolf: Do you mean then that the type 1 gearbox will not fit the static Tiger 1 chassis because of this one hole? But the Sherman gearbox will fit? What about the new gearboxes(type 4)? So if I have a static version of the T1 and want to put the gearboxes in for RC, I would have to drill an additional hole for each gearbox or use the Sherman gearbox? Would the Sherman gearbox work? Maybe Tamiya did that on purpose to make retrofitting the static kits difficult so one would go and buy an RC kit instead, which means more $$$ to them? Angry [:(!] Lester

I'm not sure... this is what I found with my Early Type 1's. I'm going to ask the other tankers who have Ones to look at them , as later editions might have been altered to have the added bolt-down point .

TTYL, had a ~very~ bad day , and just got back from Emerg feeling like I'd been run over by the ambulance.

Hey Lester,

I have put the Type 4 gearboxes in my Tiger I and I they offer varying configurations with multiple holes in the base plate. Of course, this might or might not help you if you don't have the corresponding holes in your chassis.

Yea, I'm ok.

Just a little complication because of my stupid f'in pain meds (little as in could be tackled in under a day) This has been a possibility for YEARS, and now that its happened I've got the leverage to push on the docs (and its something only a masochist would plan on)

As for the Gearboxes:

Its just the Early Type 1's, as far as I know. I guess they made the holes in one place for one kit, issued it, and then decided changed their mind and instead of two different parts with everything the same but mount holes, they just added an extra mount hole. Mebbe in 20 years these will be one of those Tamiya rarities...

The only other one that won't fit in anything else is a Type 3, because instead of the final ratio being in the gearbox, its outside, and the output shaft comes out one hole sooner. It ~would~ make it perfect for a T34 or Panther, as they both use that external final ratios (thats why my bets are on those instead of a Leo 2A5, as well as the fact a 2A5 won't have any use for a TaBU... )

On the Type 1 boxes:

Its ok guys, the Type One 'flaw' I spotted was only present on the first issues ones (probably long gone by now). I discussed it with Willy, and he found the same problem. So if you're box-swapping (like i am) beware!

The easy way to tell them apart is to look & see if you have three brass stud-mount holes in the underplate of the DMD casiing, or four: 3 = first-issue, 4 = universal.

If you got Type 1's with your Tiger, they are what I'll now be calling 'new' Type Ones, as they can be fit into any tank. The 'old' issues can only fit into Sherman & KT, because the bolt-mount pattern for the Tiger1 is different. The center offside bolt had to be relocated as it interferred with one of the suspension arm sockets.

Odd that Tamiya didn't think of using an adapter plate like they used to mount the 'toy' gearbox into the static Tiger (and is an alternate way to mount DMD's into an old Leopard, Gepard or KT)

I apologise for spooking a few people... myself included.

WhiteWolf (who still wants a set of ~new~ Type 1's, though I could use olds in a pinch)

OK folks, here is the scoop......

I only have the commander figure to finish up. It's hard to get the shading right on the Black uniform. I can post pics of the almost complete project, if you want.

I think that, it shouldn't be but until Monday until I get my Wittmann completed.

PS....I think the other figure I completed came out sweet but, you will be the judges Wink [;)]

Awesome job Eric!! I got a little more done on mine. I've completed all the parts for the rear of the hull now but am waiting to attach them later so I don't keep breaking them off! Tongue [:P]
Here's a few more pics.

First is the bolt lugs added to the rear hull for attaching the exhaust guards.

Here's the exhaust guards rolled and ready to go.

And here's the air pre-cleaners with chain added.

Thanks Eric! Okie, I used a mini blowtorch on them to aneal (sp?) the metal and make it a little softer and easier to roll. I think I didn't get them hot enough actually but the piece was so big it was warping as I was heating it and I got nervous! Tongue [:P] As it was they rolled ok, just took a bit of convincing. Big Smile [:D]

Here's a couple pics of the first fender I just finished. Only 7 more to go Tongue [:P] unless I decide to leave a couple off.

Bottom view.

I have officially started mine.

I got it last Christmas, but due to having to move my family, I am just now getting back to it. Not a lot of progress to report at this time.

I'm building Tiger 405 of Liebstandarte during the Krakov campaign (Feb. 1943). I've been able to scare up several pictures of this tank during this time period and during April of 1943.

I've laid out the extra cash for the Aber Photo-etch set and the main two S&T figures.

I'll post pictures as some real progress gets made.

Thanks for putting this thread together. It'll help me with this build.

RC Note:

Those of you wishing RC assistance and read my former referrals, ~recind~ one. The RC Armor Forum has become a site for the Danville crowd to abuse others as it sees fit. Kirk (the forum manager) refuses to enforce the rules he's emplaced, and even participated in the ridicule.

In lieu of the forum, please go to ArmorNutsRCArmorHut:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/armornutsrcarmorhut/ or
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/customrcmodels/ for RC assistance, as Justin will enforce the peace.

Dirk's Parts:

Willy's talked to Dirk, and things are on hold until Early January until Dirk gets settled in his new home. Feel free to join DP-Thema and add your 'order' to the list we're collecting. Willy is also still trying to talk Dirk into getting PayPal... so keep yer finger's crossed.

Hey all,

Erush.... do you mean to say that that fender was once totally flat, and you created it by bending and folding??!! (Stuttering in disbelief) If that is true, than my hat's off you and anyone else utilizing the full Aber set. Holy cow!

Yeah Roy it was flat, but the braces underneath are seperate pieces. The fender itself just takes 3 straight folds and then the braces are glued to the bottom. It's really not that hard after you get the hang of it.

Latch66, welcome to the build! You're going to love this model. Do you have the full option or the static kit?

I've got just the static kit.

I'm looking forward to getting it built. It's going to be a little more involved than I originally thought. Tiger 405 came from an earlier production lot than what the kit represents, so I will have to scratch some of the earlier parts. And it's also a command Tiger with the additional antenna on the upper hull.
