You know, I just noticed something. I have the distinct impression that as this group build progresses, the models themselves are going to get more and more detailed and technically advanced. Which is good in my view. (I'm just relieved in a way to be finished because I could never fold all that PE!) I am, however, looking forward to seeing how the rest of the "battalion" turns out.

It's going to be a while yet Eric, but I'm working on it!! Big Smile [:D]
Here's the latest, front hatch with working latches. This took almost 2 full days. Lots of pieces on these but they look good when finished. I'll worry about the periscope later...my head hurts. Tongue [:P]

latches in open position

latches in closed position

hatch mounted on deck.

I'm fixing to start cutting the front fenders. Then I'll be adding the PE fenders.

I'm not going to do the inside of the front hatches because mine will be closed.

But, you've done a sweet job on them. Allmost makes me want to do them too!

Thanks guys, I think the hatch was the most painstaking part so far with the Aber set.

latch66 I have a suggestion fro you. Don't attach the p/e fenders to the hinges on the hull until you're almost done with everything. I've broken my front fenders too many times to count by forgetting to watch for them when working on the back etc. Could save you some grief. Do your fitting and all but leave them loose to pull back off.

Robert My littlel 1/16 driver will lock the latches of course!! Tongue [:P] Big Smile [:D]

Beav The hatch will definitely be open for viewing!

Here's one more to show the inner part of the hinge and "spring".

Oh M'God Eric! You are the man! Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow] The inner hinge and spring mechanism, did you scratch build that, or did it come that way with the PE set? Is it functional? Holy Censored [censored], my mouth is dropped opened with a Dunce [D)] look on my face! Way to go Eric! Lester

Erush :

Jeeze, that sh*t would sent me screaming down the street. In Winter. In the buff. Looks gorgeous though. Now we know why that set is classed as a museum quality set, eh? Bow [bow]

Bet my static set won't look as good once its painted (and its not functional)

lrdhsktr

The first real pages of the Aber instructions, 7 thru 18, are all on those hatches. 12 pages out of a functional 46, thats over 1/4 of the bleedin' manual, mate!

The first page is the cover, then next 3 are the plate & part images, 5 is the bibliography & legend (as its multi-language) and page 6 is the tools needed. Yea, I took my full manual to Staples and blew it up to 8.5 x 11 (130%) to keep a full copy. Tempted to scan the pages too.

I'd say the fenders are the easiest , thats why I started there, though those screens seemed easy... Banged Head [banghead]

Hopefully I can get my butt motivated over the holidays to finish my fenders, and start on something else. I don't wanna start anything else and have the whole kit half-done, eh? At least if half the whole kit is done, I can use/display it.

And the front/rear fenders and deck accessories are the next two candidates, though the turret bin hatches look interesting.

Thanks guys. It is 1/16th though, if it was 1/35th then it would be impressive! Tongue [:P]Big Smile [:D]

Lester, that's what comes in the Aber set. The "spring" is just copper wire wrapped around the brass rod, one of the easiest parts actually. The hinges are all functional though. It's not all that hard to do this stuff, it just takes a lot of time and patience and that's why I'll probably close the other hatch and not fool with it! Tongue [:P] Now I just have to do the periscope for this one and see if I can do the top half for the other hatch and not the whole thing.

I'm just glad to know I won't be having THAT madness to worry about!
I decided long before I bought either the kit or the Aber set that she'd be buttoned up.

Ya know, I'm still kinda surprised somebody hasn't put out a mondo-super deluxe interior for that big kitty.

If that ever happened, I would have to buy another! I'm already thinking about doing a 1/16 Static King the way it is Wink [;)]

A full interior would be sweet! I'd be glad to leave the motor out to do a full interior on this baby. I would probably go insane doing all that along with the Aber however! Tongue [:P] Big Smile [:D]

Arrgg. Fahgedaboudit!

Ok, anyone want 90% of the small parts out of an Aber set (or what remains)?

I've just tried to make the eyebolts. I do NOT advise anyone to try this unless you have the eyes of Inspector Gadget on 300x mag, the steadiness of a precision microscopic handler, and the patience of a saint of ANY denomination.

Why? I tried them. Thought cutting some off and adding them to those still on the sprue easiest. Ruined four only have one half-made of the three-part ones. You have to place the pieces together ~exactly~ the first time out, or you ruin the part as the eyes of the bolt wont line up. And forget about reaming the eye afterward, the metal wont take it.

And protect the rest of the fret when you do it... my chains for the smoke launchers are also ruined. They are THAT fragile!! I expect this puts paid to all of the latches, and probably any functionality of the fenders. I should have stuck with ~just~ the screens.

To anyone considering the Tiger Aber set:

Unless you've use PE before and have ~both~ super-steady nerves & unlimited patience, DONT buy the whole set. Get just the fenders, & any of the large pieces you want, and then get the 'bonus' pieces from Dirk.

... watching another $200 US go down the drain...

WhiteWolf (wishing he has come alcohol in the house)
Happy Fraggin' Holidays

PS: don't say ~anything~ about how ~easy~ it is unless you're volunteering to put my smaller parts together... FREE.

Yes it is Tongue [:P] and that's why I finished up the periscope for the driver's hatch Big Smile [:D]
here's a couple views.

Uughh, that was a chore. A lot of little things didn't line up once it was all built and I ended up glueing it shut, it should have been able to open and pull the pericope halves out Tongue [:P] I am going to have to figure out how to get some mylar or something in there for a lens once I get it painted. I'll have some time to think that over though!!

OMG. Eric, that thing is absolutely amazing. I don't think I would have the patience you all have for this kind of detail. Great work!

I gotta ask...

Its been bugging me since I saw the first PE pics... Why are the damned things ~silver~? Erock, Erush?

Mine are all a copper color, apart from the S-mine frets that are a brassy color. You doing something odd to them to make them that color, or is that just a thin silver undercoat for the later paint? (or not)

[red]Side fenders done[/red]

I calmed down and finished the side fenders. Getting the ends flush was fairly easy by using the glass-sheet method. Will see if the alky wash (70% medical swabs) was enough cleaning... Will probably do the rear fenders next...

I may say stuff the fine sandpaper and use vinegar for a faint surface etch to give a binding surface. It's what Eduard's info page recommends, not sanding. I suspect it may have been sanding the fret that tore the smoke chain.

Gonna try to see if the jewelry stores up in Chinatown (a few blocks away) has some small cheap links to use (for the cleaner chain too)

Anyone filling the nuts and other 'hollow' pieces with anything, and if so, what? I've thought of epoxy or melted plastic sprue pressed in. Epoxy is thick enough to not leak out of any gaps, but fairly easily drilled. If I wanted super-hard, I'd use the CA and baking powder method. I may still reinforce the fender joints this way... could be disguised as 'mud' ... Even pondered using JB-Weld as a filler.

Silver?

Did it come direct from Aber, or was it second-hand? Both my full set and loose frets were copper...

I ask as someone may have stuffed the pieces from a wave solder process.

Maybe Aber did that to the first ones, then gave up.

Or is that what the vinegar-etch does to the brass parts?

Anyone with an unstarted FULL set?

Got a favor... can you measure now much of each of the wires, rods & tubes you get? I know you need 58mm x 2mm (x3) for the cleaning rods... Ignore the tow cable lengths (probably buying Dirks, and know the proper 1:1 lengths) but need all the others from 0.4mm & up. I have to place an order & want to make sure I buy enough the first time. I know I can under-order the 0.4 cause of the front hatch roll-springs (keeping the nice plastic ones from the static set)

Also have to order the metric drill bits. I managed to partially roll the rear main hinge, then realised I need the right diameter inside. So its back to the bit-parts that don't need tube/rod/wire.

WhiteWolf
(wondering why his are all copper/brass colored)

PS: Erush, I agree with Shermie, you're certifiable! Its gorgeous work though... I'll never have that much patience...

PPS: Happy Holidays! Smile [:)] Pass the turkey! Dinner [dinner] *belch* Zzz [zzz]

Hope i can do mine 1/16 justis (when i get going that is!!)

Erush

You PE work is ace! Are some of the bolts on those hatchs real? Make me feel like buying a static 1/16 just to use the Aber PE set (im not going to get the full set for my RC one! i might come off when driving it about)
