I'm making a little progress. I'm still rusting the mufflers up so they aren't fastened on yet. I just put them on there cuz I managed to glue the rear fenders on. I cut loose the front fenders but I still have to build the PE for them. I'm going to add some sheet styrene up underneath like Erush did. I really liked that idea.

Here's the front fender just after I dremeled it off.

Here's the front fender cleaned up a little bit and also a little test thing I made up for my zimmerit. It kind of gave me a good idea how long it took for the polyester putty to setup.

I'm having a tough time making those little PE latches though. They are so small. Right now I'm rolling them over a small drill bit but I'm not really happy with the results. Anybody else have a better idea?

Being a new guy to the forum, I have been reading all the posts in the Tiger 1 group build to get any info that would assist me in my own current build. I have seen several references to "DIRKS PARTS KIT" and was wanting to know exactly what is available. I've cast my own spare track hangers from an original sent to me by Okie Boy, but I still need to replace the tow cables. Could someone please tell me if "Dirk" has replacement cables?

Hey ya'll,

Nice Tiger Kuma! I like the chipped areas on the Zimm. I can't wait to see what you do as far as paint scheme.
In answer to Omaha's question, Dirk has real tow cables; even left hand twist! My 1/16 German helmets from Dirk are finally on their way.

Looking good Kuma!! I've been slacking the last few weeks. Been real tired and a bit worn on that Aber set too, so I figured I'd take a bit of a break. Tongue [:P] I'll be back on it again soon though.

I understand the Tiger 1 static kit comes with the hinges and interior details for the driver and radio operator hatches. If this is true could anybody supply me with the sprue information and part numbers so i could order them from Tamiya. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Even a xerox copy of the instructions for the hatches would help.

erush, could you send me that information as well?

I have a Tiger waiting in the wings to build and that info would come in handy when I start it.

Thanks

Woofie Reporting...

Damn I hate being sick Dead [xx(] Ok, here is the lowdown on the various things I missed:

Omaha:

You can find Dirk's Parts here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DP-Thema . I've got a load more inbound, and will add any pics of stuff that is not already present on the site, and report on the parts I've bought myself. I'll also relay on others if people are interested. (friend bought the T1 cables)

At present its probably faster to pay Dirk thru Western Union directly, as Willy's... distracted. A few of us are pushing Willy to talk Dirk into PayPal, but again... Willy's busy. I'm also awaiting an image and new parts CD update from Dirk... (but I'm not holding my breath)

BackYard Armor is releasing a new design for the Tiger's suspension. Its similar to the German designs, but MUCH cheaper at about $130 a pop. You can find the assemblies here: http://www.backyardarmor.com/Elite_Armor_Tamiya_Tank_Suspension_Upgrades.htm

From the looks of it, it may even have variable-lift tensioning by adjusting the arm-position before locking the collars (similar to the way ya adjust the stupid KT's idler) I will ask 'em if thats been tried.

The Easy Eight conversion package that BYA announced months ago for the Tiger-target (aka the Sherman) is finally ready for pre-orders. You can find it here: http://www.backyardarmor.com/AIB_M4A3E8_EASY_EIGHT.htm

It includes PE for the engine grilles & replacement engine deck panel, exhaust deflector, T-23 turret & detailing with a 76mm barrel & brake (usually $30 alone) plus a 'mantlet cover kit' (see the 'grey' material in the ziploc with the decals? I may be wrong though, but thats to replicate the canvas weather cover!) It appears that if you to have 'open' turret hatches you have some careful cutting... (ditto the engine deck venting)

It looks decent, but I'll be holding back until I get a report from someone I trust (though $130 USD shipped to Canada is reasonable) There are ~no~ indications of adaptability for basic 53400 traverse or full MF capability. Anyone getting one, please let me know (so I can advise others)

Apart from that I'm dead in the water as I'm also awaiting parts from Custom RC Models. Willy also has most of my manuals for scanning for the website, so I'm stalled. My own 'order' is now at 8 weeks & counting, with nothing delivered. And I've pre-paid for most (if not all) of it. Sigh [sigh]

He told me he's been run off his feet with 9-5 work, and this weekend (End of Feb) is the Danville battle day. He said he'd try to wade thru his mail on Sunday, but don't count on it.

Like WhiteWolf already tried to explain ( thanks buddy ! ) ,
I am behind with filling theses orders….
As well with answering emails….I am trying my best , but since this
is hobby ,
I have to worry about my job first …I work as a service-tech and
travel a lot ….,
And in the moment I am every week on the road….
As soon work slows down a little ,everybody will get his stuff ,
I just need more time …..
I do not ship out ½ done or rush-job's…….
I am thinking about not to go to Danville this weekend because of
that …….
Thanks for your understanding……
kind regards

Willy

Hello All,

I just got the bottom end done on my KT and was wondering how to get rid of the high frequency noise which must be getting picked up by the speaker from the receiver wires?

Any fixes out there?

Thanks, Morgan

Thanks everybody for the compliments Smile [:)]

Sorry its taken me so long to post a reply. I'm still pretty buried with work and the weather has finally started to warm up here so I've been enjoying outdoors stuff.

Buda... I used this stuff called Instant Rust. Its pretty cool and easy to work with. I really wanted to rust up the mufflers good. I bought it from Discount Models up in Michigan but I bet you could probably find another source by doing a websearch on Instant Rust.

WARNING!

Upon arrival at Danville, I soon discovered that the new Zagi 400s do not bring the Tiger I down to scale speed. Normally I wouldn't worry too much about being 9 mph fast, but it mattered when you're running around in the dirt against other tanks. So I'm going to put Graupner 400s in the Tiger and see if that slows her down enough. I also use two 7.2 v 3000mah batteries, whereas most of the other tankers only use one. It's always something isn't it?

Has anyone installed the suspension upgrade for the Tiger from Backyard Armor? This may have been talked about, but I don't recall anybody giving any report on its installation and performance. Anyone? Cool [8D] Lester

Can't wait to here your feedback Rocad Smile [:)]

Thanks for the heads up Okie! Hows that new project coming along?

I've ever so slowly been making progress. Here is one front fender done. I've been prepping the front section of the hull to accept the new fenders. Just my opinion and I have nothing to back it up since I haven't done it yet but I think if your doing this PE set.... install the brass rod into the front hull section as studs rather than building the PE hinge pivots then trying to push them into the hull. I pushed my brass rod studs into the hull and they were a very very snug fit. I'm hoping this method works out ok! Tongue [:P]

Hey Kuma,

Nice looking fenders. The Stug is coming along slow but sure. I'm having some machine work done that requires my upper and lower hull. So for now I'm working on the smaller assemblies. I've purchased all of the electronics needed and metal tracks with sprockets and idlers. I'm still waiting on a resin mantlet and my base plates.

Dirks Parts Update:

Well, the second order arrived, better late than not at all. I'll say now, that for most of the smaller cast parts, he supplies a spare for each set (KT & T1 hangers, and M4 reservoirs) There were a few problems, but the report stands:

Sherman shock oil reservoirs: very clean, and the seam that is supposed to be there (its not a molding flaw) is there. Thumbs Up [tup]

Tow Cables: well made, wire is aircraft-type, flexible; end-loops are neatly cast. Thumbs Up [tup]

Shackles: Very cleanly cast, T1's have one side threaded, KT's use a nut. Only flaw is they need 3mm hexhead bolts, not Phillips-head! Confused [%-)]

Operational KT hatch: clean, very nice; needs an extra bit of brass sleeve tubing glued inside the turret to keep lift-rod straight, and spring is too strong. Confused [%-)]

KT track mounts: Rather simple, and I assume they are supposed to have ~something~ drilled, as a bit is provided along with a cheap tube of CA, but no instructions. Confused [%-)]

T1 track mounts: At first appeared neatly cast, but there are NO HOLES. You have to drill them out. I'm not even going to attempt the 1mm hinge rods, meaning these are glued open or closed, and only removing the turret top will release track links. No provision for the 'latch-handle' either. Brass for hinges provided, and template from Aber manual, but no drill bit (was it missing? I was short two upper mount points) Disapprove [V]

So... Analysis?

He may need some 'plans' for a few of the 'kits', though most are self-explanatory. The only real 'fail' mark was the T1 track hangers, and casting the parts around in-mold rod would fix that. To put it in perspective, I have to assume there has been no real 'pre-production' testing-feedback, so I guess we're it.

So... that means I'm ~still~ looking for a set of Tiger track hangers from an Aber set. I'd be willing to trade these, as well as some cash for them. Anyone?

I also have a spare set of Sherman reservoirs to let go.

WhiteWolf

On a lighter note, made my under-turret locking tabs to replace the fragile ones that are part of the rear bin. Will also be replacing the plastic smoke discharger arms with metal after snapping ~both~ off.

Could use a recommendation for chain for the smoke units and air cleaners (35'th scale light tow chain? or smaller?)

I finished up the other Fender and tried mounting one to the front hull but ran into a snag. Even though I built those front fenders very carefully the pivots that are mounted to the hull are too wide to fit the fenders. So I'll have to thin them up a bit without ruining them. I'm wondering if you ran into this snag Erush?

I thought about scratch building new pivots and I just may end up doing that if I can't get the PE to fit right..... pretty frustrating stuff really.

Kuma, I did have the same problem. Don't try to open the hinges on the fender itself, they're very fragile. I used a file and narrowed the pivots on the hull until they'd fit, then smoothed them with CA and mounted everything. I'd also suggest just dry fitting the fenders to the pivots then removing the fender after it's set. I've broken mine numerous times. Sad [:(] Black Eye [B)]

More Aber? ~Yes~...

Well, I stumbled on a link to Aber's site (http://www.aber.net.pl/ramka_aber_ang.html) and roamed about a bit. And buried in the announcements section, found ~these~ jems:

16011 German Panzer troop's accessories:

The fret image (in catalog, 1/16, B04) includes various shoulder boards, many medals, belts, buckles, suspenders/webbing, and lots of other stuff I can't ID. Looks like Techstar's 120mm set has competition...

16012 8.8 cm Tiger I A/T Ammo with box:

I assume this is either cast or machined tank shells and a transport box... no images yet though. Apparently a few people plan on making shells...

16 K02 Detail set for Tamiya's Kubelwagen:

Heaven only knows here... but bet on wipers, gun rack on the crossbar, instrument panel parts, floor pedals, shifter & brake, maybe even parts to make proper seat frames. And don't forget detailing for the engine area too!

No price listed for any of these as yet. Anyone have a contact inside Aber? Euro dealers? Can anyone put a word in for Sherman PE? KT and Pershing too?

Nice find WhiteWolf !!!

Looking foward to a few of these new sets. The 16011 fret is actually found in B03 part of the catalog.

Thanks for the info.

Erush, thanks for the reply. I was hoping it wasn't just me. I did in fact try to force matters and parts of my hinges came loose for my trouble. I've got them glued up again so no harm done. But it still leaves me scratchin my head on how I'm gonna get around this. I think I'll try some filing on the PE pivots. If that don't work then I'll give scratch building a try.

I'm gonna take your advice and not mount those front fenders until I'm just about finished building but I'll dry fit the hinges.

My apologies, and yes. I goofed. Had both in my mind as I posted, and went and used the wrong one.

I've got a letter to Aber pending asking a few things, and when I have answers, I'll let you all know.

And thanks for the tip on the 'hinges' guys. I'll probably hold off drilling the mount holes until I've got most of the assembly done, and then drill them to match the mount locations.
