Got the second (looks like the last) coat of the green zinc chromate done on the interior surfaces of my Black Widow.  Should be able to post some pics next weekend when it looks like I'll be able to put some sub-assemblies together...

The engine painting instructions are a bit confusing to those of us without references to look at, but hopefully I'll find some walkaround photos online somewhere.

Thanks for the comments Silentmodeler. I dont think I could build a C-47 withouth the invasion stripes, just wouldnt seem right to me. The kit is of a D-day bird but after the invasion date and the stripes removed. Some reference of this bird showes some of the stripes showing through an overpaint. I am going to paint them on and go ahead with the kit decals as that appears to be correct. As of now, I dont know how wide the stripes should be on the scale model. If anyone out there knows the correct dimensions please help me out. It's that or I will eyeball them.

Hey, guys.

I have the Revell-Monogram 1/48 B-17G partly built and I need a reason to get moving on it.  I started it about the time this GB started.  It's just got a base coat on it currently, still needs a lot of work.

Do you mind if I join this GB?  I'd appreciate it.

BTW - Nice work on the completed models so far, they are all very nice.

The regulation size for fighters was 18 inches ( 3/8 of an inch in 1/48 scale ). I don't know if that applied to C-47s. IIRC the large identifier numbers on the forward fuselage were white on D-Day and yellow on the later jumps.

I for one, would love to see another B-17G. Maybe it would spark me into digging mine out.

Daryl, thanks a lot for the info on the stripes. It's a good starting point and was approx what I was thinking when doing some mesurements on the wing. I also did not know about the colour coding on the side of the aircraft. I might have new problems now with the decals.

Thanks silentmodeler.  This kit is one big pain in the rear, but I love the B-17.  It's definately stretching my modeling skills, which aren't that great to begin with.  I'll have to jump back into something simple after this ordeal, just to get my nerve back.  :)  My problem is it's hard for me to move forward unless I think I'm building it right.  Well, there just ain't know way for me to make this model right, so I just need to do the best I can and finish it.

Here's an update on my F-106 and Cobra

The Cobra's engine is together and looks better than I expected. I'm working on the interior tub, but have to do some sanding--as I said previously, paint was not my friend when I started this build!

The F-106's pit is finished, and the fuselage goes together around it next...probably tomorrow night.

Sounds like you are making good progress.  Keep it up and maybe post some pictures.

Hey Jin,

I noticed I wasn't on the GB list. Can I still build the Pro Modeler Ju88C-6 for this GB? If not I have a B-29 I could build instead.Cowboy [C):-)]

Hit a snag on the F-106 build, or I should say hit a finger. I broke a modeling finger at work Wed. (with a 12lb sledgehammer, I hate sledgehammers) and won't be able to build til the swelling goes down and I can hold something. I did order decals and Mr. Surfacerer 500 so I may as well wait for them.Cowboy [C):-)]

I finally tore myself away from my grandson for a little while and got work done on my Revell 1/72 F-89J Scorpion.  I used Model Master Silver Plate aerosol paint and then buffed it to a shine.  I just hope the shine isn't ruined by the clear coat yet to come.

I have started a second kit for this group build to go along with my Fort Wayne F-84F Thunderstreak.  This is the 1/48 scale Revell F-89C Scorpion and will have the Michigan ANG markings at Detroit IAP.  The Radar Operator's panel is on the left and the Pilot's on the right.  I sprayed flat black on the panel, dry brushed silver on the instruments and put a couple of drops of Future on the instrument faces.

I started this kit back in December. This Revell 1/48 F-106A was an OOB build with no aftermarket detail other than Eagle Strike decals and a few items I scratch built for the cockpit. I spent most of the time rescribing it and did that 100% freehand. Decals are a mix of OOB and Strike Eagle decals representing the 539th FIS. NO weathering, NO accenting panel line, 100% clean build. Every technique I used for getting this finished I learned for someone HERE at FSM on the forums and from talking to more experienced "hobbyists" of my peers.

The Revell 1/48 F-106A is not the type of kit you can turn out in a week and anyone that tries it will have one sorry looking piece of plastic when they are done. This kit requires paitence and time since there are many manufacturing fit defects that MUST be corrected to make it look half way decent.

Here she is and she is a beauty!!

Airmaster,

Very nice work on the F-106.  How did you do the yellow gasket line around the canopy panes?

Progress report on my F-15C.  Mostly all put together and painted.  Couple small parts still to attach and then it's gloss coating and decals.  Will post pics on Monday.  Should be (unless the honey-do rears it's ugly head) done by then.

Rand.  I hope my 106 looks a thrid as good as yours when i build it.

T-gal and yard.  Nice progress.  How do you get the drybrushing to look so realistic?

hey airmaster, my 106 is almost done. I just need to flat coat it. I'm not using gloss because I don't believe in shiny planes. I think mine might be that sorry piece of plastic you were talking about

Hey guys sorry i ditched this build for a while. All the highschool admission letters coming in and the sorts got me carried away...

GrandmaL that is an excellent BM finish! I will have to try that technique when future builds requiring BMF comes up...

Airmaster- another excellent 106 added to the world. great job!

As for me, my SR needs black ontop (underside is painted) and little subassemblies like the landing gear canopy etc.etc. and decals. Can't wait to get this one done as this will be my first of 07

My Gawd, man.  That is like 2 per week!  Do you do anything besides build models?  Have you ever heard of eating, sleeping or some mundane things like that?

Thanks for the warm words on my Six. I am very happy with the way it turned out.

Silient, You mean to tell me you do not know what scribing is!?!?Shock [:O] Re-scribing is taking a model with raised panel lines and making them recessed panel lines, hence scribing lines into the model replacing the raised panel line detail to more accurately reflect how they look on the real planes.

Doom, I think you should go with at least a semi-gloss finish. Nearly all F-106's had a glossy look up close. Brushing on Future and buffing it will get that semi-gloss look. Trust me, it will look better with some shine than without it.

First of all, Texgal, Yardbird, and Air master, the projects look great.  I like the interior details on the jet intakes and assundrious parts.  Also, I agree that the F-106 would look even better with a gloss finish.  I would suggest airbrushing a coat of Future mixed 50:50 with a high percentage rubbing alcohol (I use 99% myself), as this mix has worked the best for me.  Aside from my nitpicking, everything looks great! Bow [bow]

I also apologize for disappearing for a while.  I have been a bit busy with the family and work lately, and when the weather was nice last week, I was out getting my first miles on the bike for 2007.  Anyway, I did finish my X-15 a few days ago, and finally got around to shooting some photos this afternoon.  Here is my finished project.  As a side note, I did a final coat of semi-gloss to match the reference photos that I have seen of the plane on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum (also where I got the reference for the exhaust pattern).  The external fuel tanks depicted were in a couple of different resources that I found, and I like the mix of part shiny and part flat aluminum.

As always, I am open for any feedback.
