In the 300+ 1/48 kits I have in the stash there are three 1/48 Lancaster waiting to be built - one of which is going to be a Lincoln using the Paragon Conversion.

How about, 'FAA GB Bomber Command' with the Lancaster the main theme? Unfortunately, I don't have a Lanc in the stash.Sad [:(] That can be remedied though.Big Smile [:D] But I am not going to start another until I get the Buc much farther along.

I believe if the Cag were awake right now he would ask why you have not finished the Badge yet Frank. I kinda figured it was an official duty of the XO?

Roger that CAG, I also received a Lancaster from a good friend.  I have been waiting for a Gb in which to build it!

One thing- If this in fact a go, please allow the rest of the crew a head's start before Aaron gets going.  He built his most recent Tamiya Lancaster in under 24 hours! Shock [:O]

Bondo,

great story! I know what you mean about bench fatigue.........have a crack at something different it may help. Right now I have some sci-fi builds on the bench and I am really enjoying them. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide on building.

In light of recent events and so many of you expresssing an interest in Lancaster Bombers, I would like to propose that our theme for next years GB be The Lancaster.

A very kind friend gave me a beatiful kit to build last year and right now I cannot think of a better theme for next years build. What do you think lads? Up for it?

EDIT: I want to keep the spirit of our GB going so I won't change our name, this bit of the web is our hobby room, our little club. If any of you want to keep the naval builds going thats fine too. This GB is about having fun, I will never let anyone here lose sight of that.Approve [^]

Gentlemen,

it is my sad duty to report that English actor and WWII verteran Richard Todd O.B.E. has passed away today.

Richard Todd was a much loved actor most famous for his leading roles in films such as The Dambusters and The Longest Day. It was quite ironic that Richard was cast in The Longest Day because he was a young British soldier on the 4th June 1944. He was one of the first Paratroopers on French soil and served in the Parachute Regiment with distinction.

Here he  is returning to Pegasus Bridge in 2004.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8395871.stm

And here as a young Paratooper and then in later years re-visiting Pegasus Bridge, Normandy.

Here he is in the role so many of us loved to see him in, as Wing Commander Guy Gibson in The Dambusters.

Richard was every inch an Officer and a Gentlemen and will be missed by so many who loved his films.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.  I'm still cleaning out the garage for the modelling 'hole' so no idea when I'll start building but as soon as possible, I hope.  I'm returning to work soon, all going well, so I'll probably hold off to the new year.  At least I'll have the finance side of things sorted ... assuming I don't have to shout too many rounds with you lot.

You blokes really know how to tie one on.  The vomit was an inch deep in places.  I personally suspect the CAG as he seems to have lost weight but I'm afraid I can't prove it.  Found a mug that was fortunately well above floor level and will help myself if that's okay.

Saw a heap of kits today in a toy store.  Many 1/48 Tamiya kits around the $30 mark (on special) so I got rather excited when I found a Swordfish/Holy Grail.  However, its $99 price tag had me reeling and reaching for a tot of the good stuff.  Ridiculous.  Didn't buy anything but I can see a path to adding to my meagre, and dated, stash.

John, the Beau is one of my all time favourites.  I'm really looking forward to further progress.  Any specific squadron markings you've decided on?

For next year's GB, the Cold War sounds good but I'm easy ... and lacking in seniority so whatever you blokes decide.  European bombers - I love my RAF twins so...

Bondoman, great read, mate.  A real shame you can't see the pics your family member has.  I'm about to review Brick Eisel's Beaufighters In The Night.  I reckon he would have loved to have seen those photos.

Andy Sign - Welcome [#welcome] aboard, I'm sure you will have fun.

Jason congrats on your promotion, well done.

Great story Bondo, always good to hear all this history. As regards being a little down at the minute I'd step away for a while do something a little different and then the fun will soon come back, a change is as good as a rest as they say Smile [:)].

CAG, I'm more than happy to go with what ever theme is chosen, I also have a Lancaster in my stash which given the tiny size of my stash seems a tremendous stroke of luck! However I think we shouldnt move to far away from the Fleet aspect of the GB?

Roy, any joy with your Corsair?

Nice work on the beaufighter John, keep the pictures coming.

Cheers everyone...

I think the pipe is for cabin heat, Bill.  That is a good scheme, maybe I'll use it on a Mk VI I also have, it's in a black night fighter scheme and I don't like it so well.

The box like shape on the front of that bulky aft of the crew acces and forward of the ammo boxes seems to me to be the wing spar. If so, the riser aft of that could be from the engines. Tey're aircooled though, and the exhaust collector is forward of the cylinder banks, so it's not clear to me how that would work. That USAAF Beaus didn't have it. I've got a bunch of interior shots, mostly showing the RO station, and taint there. Of course, in Tunisia....

It's a good story. My Father-in-law enlisted in the Army 12/8/41 with his brother. He came from pretty simple means and had helped his mom raise two littler kids on the farm all through the depression. He wanted to be a photographer which was his job in the world, but his intelligence got him a crew mechanic, crew chief and eventually Flying Sergeant gig. When I first met him oh so many moons ago, we became good friends and he told me, of all the people in his family, his war stories for the first time. I've got days worth of the stuff, probably every week he was in.

After a year of various adventures stateside, including bailing out of a P-70 over the everglades, he went over with the 314. They went to North Africa pdq and were issued Beaufighters. He had the same pilot as from the beginning all the way through until that guy got a P-47 in 1944 and later got killed.

He loved the Bristol. One big reason was that the circumstances and mission gave him a bunch of stick time, which is what I gather all pilots live for. Their usual mission was out at twilight, 4 hours up to Italy and 4 hours back. When he first had a ride, they'd all take turns flying because the aircraft was easy to move around in (by the way where's the door in that partition?) and one could sack out on the floor. Of course in the combat area the pilot took over.

He was fond of the Hercules. Big powerful engine. Easy to work on and he also became an airframe specialist. He got  the attention of the Squadron commander because he figured out a way to rig up B-25 instrument lights, which are on a stalk on the control stick I believe, in lieu of the glowing dials, which really didn't work. And he was the first crew chief to check out the control wire tensioning kit, which he got good at. He was a real stick and rudder man and would have been a pilot if he'd had a dad that had gotten him through high school and into college.

But as a photographer he took thousands of photos and still has the negatives. Unfortunately my somewhat unfocused brother-in-law has them in a box in his house and I'll never see them.

But I've got a big pile of homade prints, hence that scan.

I asked him one time where his leather jacket was. "Left it in a garbage can in Sardinia. The parka was warmer".

He doesn't know what the colors are on those Beaus, because he's color blind, and because he never bothered to think about it. I build a Tammie for him using the Temperate scheme as I figured lend lease- who knows. But in reality it could have been RAF Cactus Airforce or green/earth.

I may crack out the Zvezda Borodino this week and give her a go.

I've also got a Lancaster in my stash that has been calling my name far too long.  Maybe we need a seperate GB?  We'll let the CAG have the final say I imagine.  Captain [4:-)]

Bondo Bill, sometimes I need to step away from the bench.  Usually it only takes a couple of weeks or a month tops to get the desire back again.   I know you have several big ones (models... you gutter dwellers) on the bench and that can really you drag you down.  Taking a break and hitting some nice quick 1/72 armor builds sounds like a great idea.  Might have to pull one out myself here soon with that Snowberry staring me in the face everytime I go over to the bench.

Permission to speak freely?

I like #2; but why not expand it to the early Cold War.. 1945~1973? Korea, Suez, Malaya, the Defence of Taiwan and Indochina/Vietnam opens up a number interesting possibilities, that isn't too broad or are covered by any of the present group builds. The FN, FAA, RCN, RAN and the USN would all be available. You could build Corsairs in the Suez or Korea, Skyraiders in Korea or Vietnam, ect.

I mix up what I build, I have a 1/32 Palmer 32 Cadillac and a 1/72 Dodge GI ambulance (I hear they were called meat wagons in the day) under way and finished the Tamiya 42 Ford not long ago, done in civvy black.   You've been building some hard ones lately, maybe you ought to do a Tamiya Beaufighter to get some relief, and straight out of the box like I'm doing this one.  Then again, maybe you got shorted on your rum ration!  Or all those girls that keep messing up my naps aren't visiting you next?

Bondo -  I was feeling the same way a while back while working on aircraft models. I built a Mustang Gt-350 and a ship and felt a whole lot better. Sometimes you need to shake the drink not swirl it.. I am Back to building the wingy things and plan on building another ship build in January sometime..

How about one of those re~issues of the old Aurora Monsters ? That might be fun for you as you appreciate the older subjects..

Hey John, I've always wondered- wots that insulated pipe thingamajiggie? My Beau expert never paid attention to it when he was sleeping on the cabin floor. Here's a good Beau schemie:

I'll take what's handed to me, except there's already Darsons W-in-P going on. And it's official- helicopters and I do not agree. My first is gonna be my last. Too fussy.

I guess I'm inclined to not mess with success, and switch back to USN, which would include USMC of course.

I've been really depressed lately, I'm beginning to wonder if I need to switch hobbies for a while. Or at least subjects. I'm going to do a batch of 1/72 armor and see if that helps...

I like the Bombers in Europe thing best, I can see a Tamiya Lanc in my future too.  Maybe it should be Lancaster Only?Evil [}:)]

As I had promised during one of my sotted binges a Coastal Command Tamiya T Mk.X Beaufighter is under way.  I started this yesterday evening.  I'm only adding PE seatbelts, and separating the tail siufaces, it's out of the box otherwise.  There seems to be a consensus that this airplane was painted in the temperate sea scheme and not Extra Dark Sea Grey uppers only as the painting guide shows, so I'm doing the former scheme.  This is a real nice kit as for fit, only one spot of filler so far, at the base of the fin.  You can see it in the picture with the tail surfaces cut up.  The wings are on already, and there is no fuller there  either, the wing snaps into place.  I may have to add a spot on the left rear underside, but maybe not, have to let the glue settle first.  I have a feeling this one may not take as long as the Lindberg Turner Special!

Thanks for the praises of the USMC!!!!

I was thinking a USMC build that would cover all Era's. We could still get our prop jobs in and for those who wish could do the fast movers or for those really wierd folks they could always build one of them whirly birds:a thousand parts spinning in close proxsimity of each other, pounding the air into submission & so ugly the earth actually repels them!!!

Hello Chaps! Pirate [oX)]

I see Bondo mentioned my intent for next years build theme...........well, there is an idea that I would like to put forward. How about a campaign theme?

Here are my idea's:

1.Pacific WWII -FAA, RCN, RAN, USN, USMC

 2.Vietnam-USN, USMC, RAN

3.1991 Gulf War-  FAA, USN, USMC, RAN, RCN, FN

Lots of possibilities here from warbirds to sweet 60's jets to modern jets. What do you think lads? If you would rather hand back over to the US Fleet next year that's fine too-I just thought I'd put the idea out there.Smile [:)]

Your thoughts please!

Hmmm You know there is a War in the Pacific and Guadalcanal build happening now that a lot of us are playing in.

Vietnam? May give Capt Bondo flash backs? I got to work with the We Were Soldiers fellows from the I'drang Valley while I was at Fort Hood. During the movie Premier and reunion. Was very I don't know the word for it.... Um Left me in an emotional awe meeting the real men.

1991 Gulf war?  Hmmmmm  You talk like that was old history now?  Seems like last week to me.

Evil Herc- Congratulations, glad to have a Marine detachment aboard.

CAG- Interesting ideas for the next theme...

Must admit, any one of those is just fine with me as long as the GB itself maintains the attitude and integrity it has enjoyed all of these years.  So, name the theme when the time comes and I shall put together an approriate build!  That is assuming I have completed the FAA Corsair by then.
