Fleet Air Arm Group Build

Bob I have applied an oil wash over Tamiya & Gunze acrylics in the past with no problems.  I personally don't think you need a Future coat with this as you're using the Raw Umber as more of a Filter rather than a wash.

The only reason I use a Future coat before a wash normally is to get the oils to remain in the panel lines if you know what I mean rather than bleeding into the surrounding paint, but in your case that's exactly what you want in this case

I think option #1 is your best bet.  After your wash and weathering, it should really tone down the starkness of the colors.

As for an oil wash over acrylics, I have had mixed results.  Gunze acrylics are no problem, but my past experience with the Tamiya flats is that as long as the undercoats are COMPLETELY cured, and the wash is not poured on, it was usually OK.  If I got a little heavy handed with the washes, it tended to soften up the paint.  Most of the time it settled back down, but sometimes didn't.  Hope that helps!

Apologies for not dishing out the rum ration over the weekend-but it was one of those weekends when duty called. Ho-hum!

In the meantime, I have a weeks leave and inbetween all my family time, I have managed to snag an evening in the hallowed ground of my secret workshop.

I have started to put the markings on my Seafire and boy am I greateful to Frank for his help with this one! If you are reading this mate-Thanks! I owe you one. 

In short, the kit decals I have are worse than bad........ Luckily for me, I've had some help from the Frank Daniels hospice for mental model builders and this build is really coming together now!

Now, as you will be quick to notice, some things need correcting-but fear not, I am on the case. For now, this is where I'm at with this one.....

Your '47 is looking awesome!  I really like the colors on those, very striking.  Seeing yours almost done is really sinking that hook to finish mine up.

Mike- I must admit, I am having a lot of fun with the same kit!  I was a little scared by the Airfix kit from all of the negative comments from others, but this kit really is nice, highly detailed, and fun to build!  I think you should try one!

hi, sorry for "intruding" on your GB.

The Fleet Air Arm theme appeals but I have just begun the Jagdgeschwader GB and have my hands pretty full. However, I would love to do a TBF /TBM Avenger in FAA livery (for this GB if i finish my Me262 in time). My problem is that i know they had specific FAA / RAF modifications like bulged fuselage windows etc but have been unable to find anyone who makes an upgrade or correction set in 1/48. I thought here would be the best place to ask - so, can anyone help?

Darren-nice work.  Very impressive.

Nicholas-If I remember correctly, the Accurate Miniatures (and reboxed by Italeria?) kit contains the buldged fuselage windows.  Not sure of any other changes required.

Thanks for your kind words lads. There is definately something about the "look" of a Mk.47. I have managed to get all the markings cleaned up and  I have also  added the undercarridge.  Some pics will follow later.

I do not know for sure, but I think the Italieri  re-boxing of the AM kit had the FAA mods in the box, so that a FAA variant may be built. (I plan to get my hands on one when I see one. )

It's one of my modeling regrets that I didn't snap up that Italeri boxing when it was first issued as it has all the ordnance and related options that were previously supplied in separate boxings.  These options include four bombs, a torpedo, two depth charges, a radar pod, and radar arrays.  It also includes a very nice decal sheet with US, UK & NZ options.

If I happened to see one on the shelves of a LHS I would certainly pounce on it now.

Quick update-

I managed to get my Mk.47 all glossed up after adding the undercarridge and flaps. I'll leave it to dry overnight and have a think about the weathering. I am quite temped to lleave this on as it is as these birds were kept very clean. If I do add a wash, it will have to be very light on the sky area's of the airframe so not to over-do it. Here's a peek.....

Looks great Darren, but I'd at least do a panel line wash to give it a little more eye pop.

OK, here's some pics. I decided to go for a light wash on the sky and a dark wash on the eds grey. It not perfect, but I'm pleased with it. Some of the decals don't look too clever, but I'm hoping that a satin coat will calm things down a bit. I tried to take pics to show the details.....this is the best I could do!

I also attached the rockets, started painting the canopy and started work on a display base. Its been a busy day! 

Good job with the wash Darren.  Gives it a bit more realism.

Daz the paint job and weathering on the 47 looks spot on to my eyes, nice job.

Progress Update:: Well I finally have something positive to report about a build progress.  I was planning on doing a Sea Harrier FRS.1 for this build but have all but given up hope of ever seeing the kit that I ordered from Lucky Model, oh well stuff happens.  Anyway I was in the LHS a couple of days ago and saw the 1/72 Trumpeter Sea Fury FB.11 and grabbed it . 

I have made a start painting the base colors of the cockpit and wheel wells and so far things are looking good, so it might be a reasonably quick build.
