I have been doing a bit of work on my Revell Spitfire.  I tried to take some pics but they all look bad.  I will give it another try later.  I have one question:  I was looking at the decals and notice that the large wing markings look like the have little cracks all over them.  These this mean that if I try to use them they will become a big pile of nothingSad [:(]

Roy

Roy, I think the operative word is "shatter". That's what will happend when they hit the water.

Roy if you can tell me what sort of (and what size) roundels you are looking for, I am sure I can dig some out of the decal dungeon.

If you want I can send or post some diagrams which show this clearly, it's up to you.

Darson,

You know, I normally would say "Oh, well!" and leave it at that, but since I have to do all this touch-up stuff, I think I may do it the correct way.Big Smile [:D] If you could post or PM me those diagrams, that would be great. I was just going off of the decal sheet, and the pics are so small, I almost missed the white alltogether!Banged Head [banghead] That's why I didn't paint them before I did the camo.Big Smile [:D] There's another one to chalk up to experience, I guess!Dunce [D)]

Mike I am so sorry to hear about your troubles with those ICM decals because I have been there and done that myself.  I have only tried to use them once before and that was more than enough.

Also, I don't know if you want to hear this at this late stage but the white stripe on the leading edge of the wing on Aussie spits does not follow the edge but actually cuts across the wing.

If you want I can send or post some diagrams which show this clearly, it's up to you.

I knew this build was going too smooth!Big Smile [:D] Yes, my friends, tragedy has struck. I got a little over-confident while applying the AM decals and thought,"hey! I can use the ICM kit decals for the small fiddly decals that aren't included with the AM set, they can't be that bad!" Well, they can, and they were!Boohoo [BH] Putting them down in a bed of decal solvent and applying 5 coats over the top simply would not make them settle, and they silvered badly!Boohoo [BH] To top it off, trying to remove them was an exercise in futility. Soaking them in water and/or decal solvent didn't affect them at all, and what I did get off left the glue residue behind. My only recourse was to sand them off. Luckily, I only put them on 1 test wing, so the damage is limited to there.Thumbs Up [tup] But, anyway, there is some touch-up painting in my not-too-distant future.Boohoo [BH] I really hope I can pull this one off....this being my first "nice" camo job and all. Wish me luck!Big Smile [:D]

I was so tickedCensored [censored], I couldn't bring myself to take pics of the damage.Banged Head [banghead]

Sorry no pics yet. I was dog sick this weekend and did not get to the bench, I did get the new canopy ordered. I way over shaded the bird and ended up sanding down the whole thing leaving just highlighted panel lines. That looked cool. Then I gave it a couple of real light coats of base grey. I have the bottom masked and am waiting for the canopy to paint the top and apply the camo scheme. Soon it will be ready. I hope in time for Christmas.

Haven't had much time to work on the MkVIII for the past week or so, except for a few minutes here and there. I painted and touched up the white on the leading edge of the wings, attached the MGs, coated the whole mess with future, and tonight I got some of the decaling done.

This side, they're still wet.....how's that for up to the second reporting?Big Smile [:D]

Hopefully, I can finish up the decals tomorrow and shoot it with another coat of future. WooHoo! I'm on the home stretch!Big Smile [:D]

Glad to see you found what you are looking for Tony, I'll be looking forward to some pics now!!!

I went out on the weekend and picked up a very fine grinding set for my Dremel.  I think that's what going to be needed to remove the last of the excess resin and CA that's blocking the IP from fitting, I'll keep you posted.

The XIVs are a confusing series.

LFXIVc - High backed rounded wing tips.

FRXIVe - Low backed clipped wing tips. Camera port on each side of the fuesalage.

LFXIVe - High backed clipped wing tips.

Thanks lads, it's good to be back. Hey Dave, long time mate, by the look of your sig you've been busy, some excellent work there buddy. Believe it or not one of my Spits that i resumed work on is that MK V from the old Canadian GB. the other one is the MK I from the 06 BoB GB.

Darren, mate. Still working on a P 47 for the BoG GB, but i will get it done, eventually. So, how long have Tweets and Tom been MIA for?

Jules you are just like me, I have so many unfinished kits from previous GBs it's just not funny.

As for Tom and Sean, well I haven't heard from them since about early 06 I think.  I might drop them an email and wish them a Merry Christmas.

I never thought to check. I found a canopy for a XIVE at squadron, will that work??

Tony

Depends on the version. LFXIVe is a high back Spitfire so it would fit a XIVc. FRXIVe (as seen in the Academy kit) is a low back version so it would not fit.

The XIVc is the high back version. Does Academy not do a spares service?

Tony:

If you need the bubble canopy, Squadron either does or did make it, I have some in the stash somewhere.

Yeah it's me, i forgot all my old passwords so i had to rejoin. been out of the loop for a long while but i see the group builds are still going strong, havn't touched a model for 18months but i found myself airbrushing a couple of spits the other day and decided that the bug has returned. My last model finished is a clipped wing MK VIII in RAAF markings, as soon as i figure out my new laptop i'll post a pic up....

Anyways for those of you who have no idea who i am the least i can do is show you some of my old work, sorry but there 109's not Spits....

Dave you're right I hadn't notice the Kremps reference in the URL Laugh [(-D]

All we need is to get Tweety and Tom back on line and it really would be the good old days.

Yep Darren, that's the old Jules all right.  Look at the http line in his sig that didn't link.  Notice any familiar references to big german nurses in that line!  Ahh... those were the days!Mischief [:-,]

Darren: your Mk VIII is an inspiration !!! I have decals for this a/c but what kit did you sue for your build ?? Is it Hasegawa ? I did not see this kit anywhere (maybe I did not look hard enough Smile [:)] )

Greg thanks for your very kind words.  The original kit is the Hasegawa Spit Mk.IX with only a small mod to the elevators under wing which required one panel line being filled.  Check your references, but other items you may need to change to convert a Mk.IX to a Mk.VIII are the early small chin air intake and cannon bulges.

Jules, is that you?  If it is long time no hear mate and welcome back to the forums.  There are still a couple of the old timers around as well as some great newer guys.

Cheers
