Thanks for the help guys, I don't know that I'll buy a PE set. At my local Michaels, the kit cost $5 with a 50% off coupon and I think I'll just make this a low cost build. I could always change my mind thoughApprove [^]

David the Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II were almost identical, with the only visible difference on most models being the more rounded Rotol spinner.

As far as PE sets go you would be safe as houses to go for a set marked as being for a Spit Mk.I.

David-

I'm not a Spitfire expert, but from what I have read the Mk.I and Mk.II are very similar.

I checked Great Models but they don't have anything like a PE set for a Mk.II. Are there any for a Mk.II or should I get a PE set for the Mk.I and use some of the parts for the Mk.II.

Check this link:

I found a few Spitfire detail sets.  It's worth a look to see if the have what your looking for.  Plus you can search all the other aftermarket stuff.  Hope this helps.

Jay,

well, that is simply superb work sir! If I produce a Spitfire like that I'll be a happy man. Also, well done for presenting it to the man that flew her.Thumbs Up [tup] I know what its like to give a model to a veteran and its amazing to see their reaction. Let us know how it goes.

I am going to have two entries in this GB, one of them I have started tonight-a 1/48 Airfix Seafire Mk.47. Its the same airframe as the Mk. 24 Spitfire so it will qualify here and in the FAA group build.Thumbs Up [tup] The kit is a little gem, but the decals are awful, so I am going to beg and borrow from other sheets in order to build a Korean War fighter.

Darren- Jon was kind enough to send me a new set of decals to replace the bad ones in my Mk.46 box (Thanks again Jon!) and the only ones from the kit I am going to use are the stencils.  If you need any of the invasion stripes, Mk.47 code letters or roundels as replacements, you are welcome to mine!

Frank, thanks mate! I'll drop you a PM later.Wink [;)]

Thanks, Jay.  I've got a Ju-388 that needs that treatment really bad.  I'll give it a try, as I just can't leave it looking like a new paint job.  It's in 70/71 so the 02 ought to work.  I WILL do a test panel first, though, to get the paint proportioned right.

John, Bob, Frank, Roy and Dave, Thanks for the comments.  John, the fading is really easy!  When I do the final flat coat, I add 2 or 3 drops of a gray or brown in this case I added 3 drops of RLM02 but I've also used RAF earth brown and RAF ocean gray, depending on the scheme of the AC.  It tones down the colours really nice.

Very nice indeed!  The subtle weathering is quite effective, and the stripes look amazing!  Truly an outstanding model!

Great Mk IX, Jay.  I'm sure the fellow will like it.  Somehow I have to learn how to fade and weather my airplanes like that.
