Roy and Marc thanks!  Joining this forum has been a blast and I hope it will be around for a long time to come.

Phoenix, those are some beautiful looking builds!  The garden looks nice too! Thumbs Up [tup]

John, I've never seen that 224 before.  Thanks for the info.  It definitely would make an interesting build.

That would be neat to build wouldn't it?

A little Spitfire trivia for all:

Before the prototype Spitfire, ser. no. K5054, also called the Supermarine Type 300, their had been the Supermarine Type 224.... a very un-Spitfire looking aircraft that is part of it's lineage.

Here's a vac-formed kit I found at IPMS Stockholm:

Look's like somebody beat us to it Andy!

If you get inundated with Spit requests, feel free to contract them out to me although my copy of Spitfire - The History is from 1989!

Great Spits, Phoenix.  They look great parked at dispersal in your garden!

Great looking Spits! Very nice paint and weathering.  And the cockpit detial is excellent.

MT714 is actually a Mk. VIII. Easiest way to tell the VIII from the IX is the retractable tail wheel.

Or get the giant book o' Spitfires with every serial ever made.... LOL

No matter the Mark- those are beautiful builds!

Phoenix-

damn fine job on both of those!  I really like the worn effect on the control spade on the Mk.V, how did you do that?  The weathering on both is top-notch, worn but not over-done.  Bow [bow]

2 past spitfire builds, both 1/48 hasegawa. The MK V is an older kit but built after the MK IX. The IX is out of box where the V has some scratchbuilt goodies and photo etch in the cockpit. It was a nice day so I thought I'd take some pics out in ther sun and see if I had all the bugs worked out of my pc.

I believe this is a early MK V.

and I think this is a late mk ix with the wide cord tail??

Jon, that book sounds stupendous.  I wonder if the Calgary library has it...

It has been a while since I last posted to the forums.  Anyway I have a bit of an issue.  I am trying to finish off a 1:48 Hasegawa Spitfire mk9.  I am 95% complete but somehow the tail wheel broke off and I have no idea when it happend and I cannot find it anywhere!  Sad [:(]

Please, if anyone can help me, would anyone have a spare that they could mail to me?  please PM me if you can help!

Thank you.

I have a spare for a Mk. VIII. It would need to have the gear leg itself repositioned at an angle, or you could glue it in at an angle. It's from an Airfix kit.

Not a 100% match, but not too far off.

I can drop it in the mail tomorrow if you'd like- just let me know!

It finally arrived!

I ordered "Spitfire: THe History" back in February. Amazon kept emailing me saying the shipment was delayed, but I stuck with it.

Today I heard a loud "thud" at the front door. The postman dropped it off on the front porch.

650 pages of the most minute details of the Spitfire you've ever seen. It's such a heavy book, it's hard to read except sitting on a table. Tons of line drawings and diagrams, with lots of photos and color plates.

It's got the history of every Spitfire it looks like.... by serial number.

Coolness!

Chris I know what you mean, I have that kit and it's a bit of a beast.  I've made a start on it twice now and both times I've put it away due to lack of time and the sheer effort involved in finishing it.

Cheers

The Kit is pretty bad to me.  I have built a spitfire, corsair, and a Huey Hog in 1/72 and I like it.  The parts are very, very small and just touching them the wrong way breaks them.  There is flash on basicly every piece.  The fit of the fueselage is real bad because there are no locator marks for the engine.  It requires a lot of attention but right now I just do not have time for it.

I hear the Albatros D.III is a good kit.Big Smile [:D]

Hi all, sorry I have been missing in action for a while but real life work issues have been killing me and have reduced my free time to zero.

Wow so much progress and so many great looking Spits and the build hasn't even officially started yet Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup].

John, that's a great looking Spitfire (one page back), you've really done a sweet job on it. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

I am sending out a big thank you Dave Harvey7 aka harvs73.  Your suggestion to go to the AMI forum was a great call.  Not only did they respond with a wealth of info in a day or 2, Peter Malone just sent me a follow up email with several photos.  There was one photo showing the a/c in what I am guessing was a paint scheme that was not on the plane for very long.  The Tasmanian devil emblem was only partially painted and the leading edges were white, which must have come off, either by removal or erosion, as the profiles do not depict this feature.  So that's the point in time that I am going to do for this build.  This is all assuming I can show some restraint and not start early.  If I succumb to the pressure I will call it a practice and use the Belgian MkXIV as the "official" entry.

Chris, I'm unfamiliar with Roden's 1/72 releases, but I have been eyeballing their 1/32 Albatros D.III ever since I read a review on it. How bad is their 1/72 kit? If you like working in that scale, Eduard has some great stuff available - Albatros's, SPAD's, Dr.I's, E.III's...the list goes on & on.

Marc-

Ruddratt sent me some Aeromaster Mk.XIV decals for a Spit I'm building that has some markings from the Belgian AF.  Instead of the standard blue-white-red roundels, it has red-yellow-black ones.  Would you be interested in those?  If you are, I would happy to send them to you.

Kinda looks like this, with different codes (3R-C).  Also, in the dark grey/dark green camo.

yup... that's off the beaten track enough for me Big Smile [:D]  That would be great  Thjanks very muck  PM inbound.

Yeah, I started to get the MK Vb because it was the same price but I figured I would just do the MKI.  Yeah I have rodens Albatros DV in 1/72 but it is really poor quality.Sad [:(]  It is really difficult to build so it is set off to the side right now.

Chris, if the Mk.I is anything like the Mk.V I'm doing, you'll love it! What a kit!

Got the fuselage buttoned up on mine, wings & tailplane are attached. Seams are clean, canopy is masked, and the next step is to apply the paint (which I don't have yet Sad [:(] ). My trip to Finescale Models in Vancouver on the 26th will change all that, however! Big Smile [:D] I need to pick up some Soviet Air Force colors for this bird.

In the meantime, I can always work on another biplane! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]
