John the Spit is looking really nice, please keep the progress shots coming.

As for Future, I always cut mine with about 10% Tamiya thinner and apply a couple of misted coats about 20 mins apart. Then I apply one or two heavy coats about 24-36 hours after the initial coats, this seems to eliminate the pebbled finish problems that I used to have.

Cheers

Thanks, everybody.  I went out and sprayed a good wet coat of unthinned Future on the Mk XVI, hopefully that will get rid of the grainy look.  The first coat was a light coat thinned 50% with Tamiya thinner, must have hit the aiplane and dried before it could level.

I have the color coats and one coat of Future on my practice ICM Mk XVI.  The Fututre is not as glossy as I would like, but it's also not as rough to my eye as the photos seem, I took them in pretty harsh sunlight.  The masks worked pretty well, and I also applied the paint (Model Master enamel) very thin and at very low pressure, which I was able to do because I put a new pressure regulator on my airbrush hose where it connects to the supply line to my main air hose.  Seems to control the pressure much better than the bigger regulator on the compressor itself.

Thanks for the plug, Roy! Wink [;)]  Guess mine is a lil' of both the Revell and the Tamiya.  OOB Tamiya kit, and Revell decals.  I have to say, I built the Revell one years ago and it was OK.  The Tamiya kit was one of my all-time favorites to build.  It even makes me look good! Big Smile [:D]

Chris-do the Revell/Monogram kit first. Then you will really appricate the engineering & detail of the Tamiya kit. Voice of experience talking here.....

I've built it, and it literally falls together the engineering is so good.  Great kit, one of the top 10 kits ever produced.

Hmm, that's an interesting thread starter.  Top Ten Kits or Top Ten Worst Kits?

Building Now:

1/48 Academy Bf-109G6 - 100%

1/48 Tamiya F4U-1A - 5%

Haven't built it, but I have the kit, and will be building it for this GB. It looks schweeeeet!

A friend told me you can test-fit/assemble it without glue up to the point of having the cockpit in, fuselage together and wings on- and it'll hold together. That's engineering!

  • Worst of all- she used my Future to mop the floor- and then got mad when I followed her up with a panel wash in the recessed lines of the tile!

Just picked myself up off the floor.  The crazy thing is, although I haven't been here long, I can see you doing that, Jon!  I'm still chuckling!

Wink [;)] My mind works in slightly odd ways..... or so I've been told. LOL

Darren, pics over at FAA weren't too bad.  I've forgotten the scary ones.  Actually, that might have been the excessive rum...

Andy, it's a pleasure to finally be able to put a face along with the name. Nice to meetcha! Thumbs Up [tup]

John, Dave....many thanks for the compliments, guys! Means a lot to me for sure! Thumbs Up [tup] John, don't think that idea didn't cross my mind.Wink [;)]  Sometimes I wonder why I go all hog-wild on an interior if it all can't be seen when things get closed up. In this case, when I did a dry-fit of the fuselage, there was still enough of the 'pit visible to warrant the effort put into it.

...and a funny thing about the rudder pedal straps. Almost every pic I saw of the pedals showed the straps missing, but I could see where they were supposed to be attached, so I cut off the kit ones and replaced them with straps made using the foil from a wine bottle.

Mike:

I think you ought to boot the idea of Russian markings for this one and go find yourself a clear fuselage half to put on it.  Send your request to Tamiya today!  I'll send a backup letter if you like.  What a shame to close up all that pretty work where only you and the rest of us here in the group build will see it!  The rudder pedals are nicely done with the regulation top straps.

Roy, you can't possibly want to see me, do you?  I went through all of the FAA GB last week and must have blanked everyone's pics from my memory...LOL.

Anyhoo, I'm 30 and work as a mining researcher for a recruitment firm.  Basically, I find geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists etc that mining companies ask us to track down when they need someone.  I used to drive trucks on the mines and my Dad and sister are geologists so that's where the mining side of things comes in.  Before that, in a previous life, I was an accountant.  Did it for six years but ended up hating it with a passion and it led me to truck driving (decided to do something fun) and meeting my wife (she's a mining engineer).

Other than anything to do with WWII aviation, I'm pretty keen on vintage trucks and have an 85% restored 1951 Bedford 3-tonner sitting in the garage.  Add to that photography, reading, working as a try-hard freelance writer and that's about me!  We got married in Santorini in Sept 05 for something different and have just about finished sorting our house out but there's always jobs that need doing in the garden or wherever.  We share the house with a toy poodle...it's really his house.
