Here is a bit of fun on the Part of Poland PE wire wheels. In truth there are several spoke variations that fall into two main catagories.

The two types we see in modeling (most often) are the cross spoked and the radial spoked. (The French used both).   I have a second set of the cross spoked that I will be alternating the spokes on.  I'll post them here later.

Thanks Stephen.  Right now, I am considering using a small round bur to make a slot for the mounting tab to positively fit into.  I really should have done it this way to begin with, but then it would have gone smoothly and I can't have any of that on this build, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  I'll figure something out.  Also tossed around the idea of getting the new Eduard Dr.1 when it is released alone and install my prop, engine, and guns on that kit.  Just an idea...

Scotty, You are welcome.

Frank,  I totally understand frustrations.  For me, sometimes it takes stepping back and drawing a breath or two.  The good thing with the DML landing gear for this kit  is that they are strong enough to take out and reset. Another possible fix is replacing them with AeroClub "STRUTZ".  This is extruded (airfoil shaped) brass rod.  The instructions detail "how to" replace kit struts.  At any rate  you will figure it out.

Good luck,

Stephen

Stephen,

thanks for the information and links that you have been adding on this build.  I was catching up on the postings, and spent a lot of time checking out those links.  I may have to see if I can find a "deal" on one of those Eduard kits sometime, as the contents look quite impressive.

Justin,

Thanks, I appreciate that.  I have a nice little pile of kits waiting for me to figure something out on them, looks like I may add this one as well.

I did have another idea, perhaps I could get the new Eduard Dr.1 when it is released and use my prop, guns, and engine on that one.  Hmmm...

Ooooh!!!

Never fun, Frank.  Sorry to hear that.

Sometimes it's a little better to set 'em aside for awhile rather than chunk them across the room!!!  I've got a few that are in that position right now!!

Ran into a little snag on the Fokker yesterday.  Evidently, the locating slots for the PE struts to the axle wing are not exactly symetrical from one fuse side to the other.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until final assembly.  Also, I should have scratchbuilt a more positive locating system for the front uprights.  They really don't want to stay attached.  Taking a little break from her for the time being. Sigh [sigh]

Here are some more images of the Se 5a build.  The deeper I go with my references the more I discover.  Warning folks one of the propellers is for the Hispano - Suiza  variant.  Even Part of Poland only provides the Lewis gun Foster mount For the Hisso.

Here is a bit of fun.  I find that when you want to understand a model sometimes you have to go to the fellows who build one to one scale.

Stephen, Frank, thanks for the comments.

Stephen, you are right, the base color looks a bit off in the pictures, but I admittedly certainly didn't hit the color of Fokker clear doped linen too closely. Anyway, I think I will leave this one as it is rather than starting to try improve things and make them worse. It might be a bit tricky to paing the lower wing and the forward fuselage now as the parts are assembled. Or maybe I'm just too scared Wink [;)] And there's always a "next" kit to do things better...

JoeRugby, really nice diorama! Thumbs Up [tup]

I'm hoping to finish one more before time's up!!

Greetings Gentlemen,

Though not officially participating in this build I thought I would drop in to say "WOW !"  truly some great builds going on here..

If I may be so bold;  This is my second stringbag and my first dio...almost finished, just waiting on the remaining fiddly bits; boxes, a dog, etc.  I hope you do not mind me posting...

I used the old Revell 1/72 E.III kit with Orion/Dark Dream Studio figures and the barn is scratched with Micro Mark's roofing material.

Any comments or critque would be welcome as I now have 4 more stringbags in my stash...seems I have caught the bug...

Greetings Sirdrake.

Actually the streaked camouflage is not bad at all. I would have gone with clear doped linen as a base colour for the upper surfaces on a Dr.I type.  BUT - to slightly improve your scheme add some more colour to areas about  3/4 inch wide in real measurement using the dark green. Leaving  3/4 inch areas of the streaked camouflage you have already done.

The only known images of Fokker Dr.I 454/17 in the public domain are after the crash where Lothar bashed his face into the gun butts.  Any previous damage would have been patched and repaired. Or you could simply add more dark green to the fuselage. Then over paint in yellow.

Nicely done, Frank!

Here's some progress pics from the Dr.1. I forgot to shoot pics of the cockpit while it was still out.

Not too much time for modeling these days, as all Europe is watching soccer day after day.. Cool [8D] Only one week left. However, I managed to glue two wings to the fuselage and did some painting. The streaky Fokker finish looks kind of different than any other picture I've seen, but I don't care any more Sigh [sigh]. It's already the second attempt. Don't think it looks too bad, to be honest, but probably far from realistic..

And then there is the yellow tail. Tried to do it right and applied one half of the decal with the serial number first, so that I can overpaint it with the yellow and give it a realistic appearance. Well, I learned not to use masking tape over decals (or maybe wait a week until they are really, really set.

Disaster. Banged Head [banghead] Not really sure how to fix this. Needless to say that the darker background color for the are under the crosses was self-mixed, and I don't have any leftover. Maybe I'll produce some doped-linen-lookalike patch and just paste it over it. Those planes where under repair all the time anyway, weren't they...? Whistling [:-^]

Just a little WIP update from me-  I managed to finish the decalling this evening, and next up is a clear coat to protect them and then final assembly.  Looks like I may just finish this bird after all! Big Smile [:D]

 Greetings, SirDrake

The undersurfaces of the Fokker Dr.I were all lt. blue.  Very light blue.  EXCEPT! the undersurface cross fields from the factory were clear doped linen. When the borders on the crosses were changed the cross fields were overpainted.

Thanks Stephen. And your picturs look great! Thumbs Up [tup]

Justin-

I hear ya fella!  Besides the Fokker, I have a Spitfire, 2 Bf-109's, a Dauntless, and a Skyhawk on the bench.  Yikes!  I hope I don't mess up and mix any parts.  Can you imagine a Skyhawk with a wood prop on it?  Or a Fokker DVIII with jet intakes?

Looking forward to having you back, if the Camel is half as nice as your Albatros it will be a stunner! Big Smile [:D]

Sounds like an Eddie Miller creation in the making! Shock [:O]
