Shock [:O]

Looks MORE than "about right" to me!  How did you do it?  I am just getting ready to paint my prop this afternoon.

Frank-- EEK!  Those ARE bad ejector marks.  I think that you and I could have engineered that kit better.

Rafhart- the DrI looks great!  Nice job.

And that prop looks awesome!  I'll second the "How'd ya do it?" because I've got to try to make mine look like that!

Justin-

Couldn't agree with you more!  The ones on the fuse sides weren't TOO bad to sand, but the ones on the rear bulkhead and floor were awful!  Hopefully tonight I can spray the wood base color and see if my work is OK!

Raf, very nice work on the Dr.I. Thumbs Up [tup]

Frank, hang in there buddy. You haven't even gotten to the really fun stuff yet. Wink [;)] Seriously, that kit is in good hands. If anyone can turn it into a gem, it's you.

Marc, great work on the prop. I know that eduard provides woodgrain decals in a few of their kits (the D.VII is one I know of). Is that what you used, or is that all painted? If it's the latter, then I'd say you nailed it!

Thanks Mike, I appreciate that!  I am really excited about this GB, it's fun to try something COMPLETELY different once in a while, like rigging (if there is any Wink [;)]) and wood grain effects.  Have you had any time in the shop, or has work really taking all of your energy?  Hopefully, you will be able to get some time in soon.  After all, we have another Gb starting in a wek and a half! Thumbs Up [tup]

I meant every word, my friend! Your work, along with Marc's, Stephen's, Dragonfly's, Mucker's, Tango's, razordws's, & Swanny's represents the creme de la creme of the aircraft forums (in my opinion at least).

....and yep, work has pretty much zapped me for now, but a re-charging period is coming up soon and I plan on making up for a lot of lost time both here on the forums and at the workbench as well. Lot's of projects lined up for different GB's, the creative juices are starting to flow, the adrenoline is starting to pump, and the enthusiasm is coming back. I love this hobby way too much, so it was only a matter of time.

all the nice little control horns that I drilled out are not strong enough to do much of anything, the good news is I need to remove them to apply the decals anywayBanged Head [banghead]

I am going to give the plane it's first coat of paint and plan on attaching the upper wing.

Has anybody tried the rubberband rigging?

Greetings all;
Here is the continuation of the Roden build. These images are about 5 days old.

The lower wing attachments are shown to advantage here.

If this doesn't look right, then I don't know. Wow!! [wow] This laminated wood effect is one of the things I have no clue how to achieve it. Freehand painting? The mere thought gives me a headache. So how did you do it?

Stephen!! WOW!  That looks amazing!  I don't think that I've seen better work of yours before!  Awesome!

Here's where I'm at with my Albatros.  The fuselage is together, and I primed and made sure all the seams were nice and covered up.

I then went over the whole thing with a wood colored primer--then thought twice about it, and rubbed it all off with alcohol.  You can still see the remnants of this on some spots.  I came back with a dark gray primer instead, and attempted some pre-shading, something I've never really done before, as I'm definitely sold on POST shading.  I figured that a dark gray pre-shade would look best underneath an overall light blue scheme.

I painted the metal panels of the aircraft on the nose and around the engine in a lighter color, in hopes that when the light blue is sprayed on, there will be a little bit of a variation of color.  Monotone schemes can get BORING!Zzz [zzz]  I don't know if you can even tell from the photos.  I may have to go back and do a little more lightening of those panels.

Anyway, I hope to get a base coat of the Hellblau on the fuselage tomorrow.  I'll post some more shots up after that!!

Another question, Stephen-

How do you get such nice looking grass for your bases?  Is that stuff you purchase?  It looks so nice and plush!

WOW, coming from you guys i guess that's a go for the struts and prop color.  Thanks.  I was looking at other WWI builds and one guy said he puts a coat of wood or tan, does the laminates with rust and then a coat of clear orange.  And that's what I got.

Am I the only one that can't see Stephen's pics?

That's looking very sharp mrdrummy.

Mike- Glad to hear things are looking up, and that you're gonna get some bench time soon.  It hasn't been the same round here without you as of late.  And thank you for the compliment, you are way too kind!  Blush [:I]

Well, it looks great Marc! Thumbs Up [tup]  And I can't see Stephen's photos either! Boohoo [BH]  I wanna see!  I wanna see!

Justin-  That Albatros is looking great thus far.  I am pumped to see how it comes out, your work is outstanding! Bow [bow]

Marc, awesome wood effect on that prop. And everyone else is just cranking it up, I can't recall the last time I was in a GB where so much good work was done so quickly. When do you guys have time to eat?

Beautiful work there Stephen!  How did you do the wicker seat?  I really like the look of it.

Dougums, Nice looking engine!  Hopefully you will be able to get some larger photos, and we can really see how nice it looks!

Dougums, Stephen, & MrD.....very nice work, guys! This GB was a great idea! I love these WWI birds, and there are just not enough of them on these forums. To see so much quality work on these amazing machines here is simply awesome! Keep up the great work, guys! I should be posting some pics soon as well.

Greetings Mr. Drummy,

I use several different methods depending on the desired result.  Sometimes I use sheets of pre applied static grass from Germany.   Sometimes I go for a winter, fall or spring look using Woodland Scenics items. I get all of these from a local rail road hobby shop but can probably be picked up from Walthers.

Stephen,

NP, I won't tell anyone! Taped Shut [XX]

Do you know what color scheme the Fokker DVIII was delivered from the factory in?  I'm guessing O.D. green wing, lozenge on fuse 'cept for the panel immediately in front of the cockpit, but I don't know about  the tail surfaces and cowl.  Can you help? Sigh [sigh]

Thanks Stephen, there's a lot of interesting info there!  I really like that photo of the machine in Belgian markings postwar with the "cupping" of the wing surface between the structural details.  Now, I gotta decide if I want to attempt that look on my DML wing.  A little practice is in order on some scrap wings!

I looked through those articles, but couldn't really tell what colors the tail, cowl, and wheel covers would have been from the factory, though.  Any ideas?

All metal areas were done in a medium green.  Model Master medium green is very close to paint chips from an original Fok. E.V rudder control horn in my care at the Lafayette Foundation. Its still attached to the rudder by the way. The tail units were covered in fabric.  There are cases where 4 or 5 colour lozenge was used. The vertical unit was covered in lozenge and over painted in white.  The rudder entirely and the vertical fin was only overpainted over about have its length.

There is if memory serves an article in Finescale that concerns  overstressed metal skin on an airframe.  The cupping on the wooden skinned Fokker E.V / D.VIII wing is very similar.  The newest issue of this Eduard kit has two wings.  One in pristine condition (from the factory) the other with the cupped effect between the spars and ribs.

Thanks Stephen!  I am building the DML kit, and the decals were shot in it.  Luckily, Mike (Ruddratt) was able to help me out with the lozenge and the crosses so I was thinking about doing a factory fresh aircraft w/o individual markings.  BTW, do you know of anyone who makes AM decals for a DVIII?  I have searched, but have come up empty. Sigh [sigh]

Aeromaster did and it may now only be offered through Squadron.   Blue Rider decals (Insignia magazine) can still be purchased and they have mutinational insignias offered.  I have a large selection of Eduard & DML kit decals.  Let me know if you need something.
