Hi everyone, been reading the forums for awhile now and i'd like to be counted in on this gb. I have a 1/72 ESCI/ERTL Nieuport 17c. I'll also be building another 1/72 model from the Axis side for a nice air battle diorama. Haven't built a model in years, this should be fun. Looking forward to seeing what people have done!

Very nice! Sounds like a great birthday thus far. I used to cheer for the Rooster myself years back when I watched NASCAR. Now, my brother and stepfather are the big fans. Matt Kenseth's home town is about a half hour from my house, so he seems to be a favorite of my stepfathers. He has Kenseth stuff EVERYWHERE around his house.

Sure did, buddy! Got treated to a real nice dinner last night and got to open up gifts when we got home. The Honeymooners 'Classic 39' collection on DVD (I just LOVE that show!), a months supply of chocolate fudge (my weakness), some autographed sports items, plus (and I'm not sure how she managed THIS one) a 1' x 2' section of fender off one of Ricky Rudd's 'Tide Rides' (when he drove the #10 Tide sponsored NASCAR Ford Taurus back in the late 90's), autographed by the Rooster himself. That one just knocked me for a loop!

And we're off! Today is our official kick-off for this GB. I have to work today, so I am hoping some of the rest of you will be able to put glue to plastic and such. I am really excited, and can't wait to see the work being done here!

Hey Frank--

I had no problems whatsoever annealing the gun jackets, seatbelts etc on the DML Fokker that I was using as a warm up to the group build. Just like Stephen says--heat 'em up, and you're fine. I even went a step further and dipped them into cold water whenever they got red-hot. I don't know if this helped the process much, but what it DID do was knock all the soot off instantly when it hit the water! :) What a happy blunder.

Actually I have had a good bit of experience working with the DML / Dragon Nickel coated photoetch metal. The Dragon PE is a bit different its actually stainless steel. But the DML gun jackets are much like the Eduard aftermarket frets for the Nieuport, Pfalz D.III and Alb. D.III & D.Va sets.

Butane lighters cook them better than anything else. When the Nickel coated PE begins to discolor ( blue streaks) you have done what needs to be done. Always remember to roll the gun jackets over a hard flat surface like a panel of glass or ceramic tile. The new silver nickel PE Eduard uses is very easy to form. I am doing a tutorial over on another forum. Enjoy.

John pretty much hit the nail on the head, Frank. I've had very limited success annealing the metal parts that come with the DML kits. In the case of the seat belts, I found it easier to pre-bend/test-fit/repeat and then CA the pre-formed part into place instead of gluing as I go as is the case with the much softer brass belts.

I don't think you will have much luck trying to anneal stainless. It just doesn't behave like brass or copper. It is really an odd duck among metals. It's useless to use as a bushing because it has less impact resistance than you would think, but is almost impossible to saw, just rips up saw blades and devours drill bits too. It "likes" heat, and is a good material for exhaust systems. You might try it, just in case it is not actually stainless, or an alloy different than the usual 18-8 stainless. If it is stainless, you don't need to worry about the soot carbonizing it. It won't. Just wipe it off.

OK, I have a question for you guys. The DML kit I am going to be building has the stainless steel P/E parts in it. What would be the best way to anneal these parts? I have heard of people heating them over a candle flame, but no mention of how long. Also, wouldn't the soot of the flame get all over the parts?
