I guess that if you only use the decals it would be fine because it isn't that expensice and its a 1/72 kit, so Okay. But only for the people with that kit.

I do not have a problem myself with aftermarket decals been used. You are the second person to ask. Since David started the GB mabye you should post the question directly to him and see what he says. As for the group badge that is exactly why I posted it as one of the choices. It is what made the P-38 one of the greatest fighters ever. No other plane in anyones inventory could have flown that mission!

I call myself "wanna be" as I love to ride but do not have a road bikeSad [:(].  I have a hardtail MTB with slicks and paniers/saddlebag rack for my commute.

I used to ride everyday before my son was born, now there is just too much going on for me to ride everyday.  1.5 hours+ out of each day is a lot, especially when I have my family and these little plastic things we discuss here crying for my attention.

From someone who is going the other way, welcome to the wingy thingy side! (Planes are my main thing and have only built one tank before and now I am doing a Pz III in the Kursk GB).Smile [:)]

Hey hey! Another one! We really should get some sort of cyclist GB going sometime...hehe.

Those 32k per day are exactly 32k per day more than most people ride. Be proud of those miles...err...kilometers. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] I would cycle-commute myself but I live too close to work - can see the roof of the office out my bathroom window.

Hey, what makes you a "wanna-be" roadie?

I'm echoing jboutin's query about decals...I'm sure most of you guys that do the aircraft forum all the time have seen the kit ones done to death...shoot for some variety, maybe? Either way I'm good.

I'm not thinking of starting one right now but I like the European Bomber Command GB. I sorta like my GBs to continue on in the same formaat but different theatre. For exxample, after my Liberation of Wester Europe GB is done, then I'm going to start a Liberation of Nort Africa GB then a Lib. of Southern Europe and finally Lib. of Der Ost Front.

Hey David, I don't think there has been an 8th airforce Gb done before.  The only one similar was the Heavy Bomber GB which is supposedly still ongoing but has not seen much activity.  How about a RAF Bomber Command GB?  Or combine both into an Allied (European Theatre?) Bomber GB?

Modelman8, that sounds good to me. Question, has there ever been a 8th AF GB before, it seems that it being one of the largest AFs that there would have been a GB on by now. Just thinkingWink [;)]

Check out a thread called Let There Be Lightning WIP in the AC. There are a few gripes with the kit, but nothing that can't be dealt with.

Hey hey! A bike guy. Sad to say i'm about 99.75% roadie...with the occasional spin on my now-neglected mountain bike. Of course, I'm a Les Paul guy as well (figures, right? Big Smile [:D]). My axe-wielding sort of falls by the wayside this time of year once the bike rolls out.

I checked out the Lightning post...it looks like this kit is doable. Will definitely require a bit of filler (heh) but hey, it's OOB, it's not destined for a museum any time soon. I need some basic skills work anyway. Let's see if I can pull it off!

Just like everyone else, I have a bunch of builds committed to this summer including 2 for the big Kursk build, so I'm not sure when I'd get going...do we have an official start date for this one yet?

Thanks for your input fellas!

Sounds like a plan David. I am hoping someone else is a crazy as me.  Otherwise I may never build the beast. A good kick in the rear and some insperation from a fellow modeler may be what I need to get inspired to tackle this monster.  am already inspired by the people joining everyday. Well gotta go my meds are kickin' in screens gettin a little blurry se ya'll tomorrow.

I guess everyone is committed to other builds or not crazy enough to build the Trumpeter 1/32 with me? No problem I will stick with my first choice of the Promodeler kit. Hey David have you taken a new head count. Seems the ranks are growing very rapidly. I am pleasanlty surprised with the results. Great idea to start a group build there David! Who knew the turn out would be so good. I am rolling along with my F 5. Just laided down the main color over the masked underside invasion stripes. I mixed it up by eye. I will not know if I am happy with it until I lay down some unthinned dullcoat to give it the faded effect with touch up for overpainted invasion stripes on the upper surfaces. I will post pics when I get a little furthur along.

I checked my container that I keep all my extra decals in and I could not find anything.Sigh [sigh]

I guess i can just wait until we start and then if I encounter a problem then we can go from there.

5 is in the lead with 2 one behind and 4 and 3 tied for last.

I think I'm going to settle with the Monogram kit because of all the variants buildable.

ModelMan, maybe someone has a set they could loan you. This GB is supposed to keep costs to a minimum. I read a review that said it was the nose art that lacked detail, do you have any other 1/72 kits that have nose art? If not, then we'll see what we can do.

Hey Dupes-
The R/M kit is really pretty doable.  It does take some patience but I think that it ia a fun, basic kit.  I have built it in all of its options and have never gotten tired of it.  Yes, there are much better kits out there but this one isn't all bad.  The one I am working on right now seems to be fitting fairly well, just a few places on the seams to clean up so far.  I haven't gotten to putting the booms on yet, so there is still a chance of some problems though.

I think I have a Hasegawa kit 1/48 lurking somewhere in my pile, or I may go out and get an Academy 1/72.  Can't decide yet.

Dave, put me down for the 1/72 Academy P-38J.  I know that this build is supposed to be OOB but I have heard bad things about the decals for this kit.  Would you allow AM decals?

I'm in for sure Dave but I'll have to wait untill I pick up a kit to let you know what I am building.  Probably a 1/72 Academy but that is not for sure.  My choice for badge pic is unquestionably #5.  I agree that that mission was a huge one and everyone knows it was a lightning that pulled it off.

Preston, always a pleasure to get to know a fellow mtn. biker.  I've been riding trails since 1987 which was before aluminum was invented.  The sport has come a long way since then.  I leave the music up to the wife though.  Not much talent in that department on my part.

I'd like to get in on this as well, i've got the 1/48 Minicraft P-38L Pathfinder kit in my stash, i kind of like the opened ended idea because i'll be starting the Kursk GB on July 5th and will probably be pretty busy with my T-34 for a while.

oh, i'd have to vote for...the second badge

I'm commited. It will be August before I could get going, though. Will be in 1:48.

I vote for pics 3 and 5, respectively.

Let me pick your brains. Mac made mention of doing the Revell kit again, as that was the main one it seems we have been building. I thought I'd like to try the Academy kit but, I've heard nasty things about thier decals. Doing the Revell again, I would know what to look for. I'm thinking keep my decals from my current build and use them on the Academy (I found a J at eHobbies). I like the NMF on 'Marge'. Ideas?

Hey David

You can be pretty sure the new Acadamy kit fit will be worlds above the old Monogram. Do not just consider the price in selecting the Monogram over the Acadamy. The Acadamy can only be build as an F model. The Monogram can be build as M night fighter F-5B photo recon a J series or a pathfinder model. The Promodeler can be built as an F G or H but is OOP and you would have to snag on on eBay. Of coarse if you are a little bit nutty like me and have the cash to burn a 1/32 Trumpeter is and option. Not to mention all of the 1/72 scale kits avalible. I myself would not try on in 1/72. It is already a pain in the rear build in the larger scales. The smaller scale only makes building it harder. Anybody want to take a walk on the wild side with me and build the Trumpeter 1/32? I will only do it if someone else is willing to suffer along with me. The long build time should be dooable. Anyone crazy enough? If not stop taking your meds for a couple of days then think about it HAHA!

Okay, I need some advice, what should I get to build. The Revell kit that costs $12.00, or the Academy Glacier Girl kit for $25.00. I'm thinking of getting the REvell kit because 1. Its cheaper and 2. ALot of other people ar edoing that.

Oh, and I'd have to go with the 2nd pic as well.

Hey dupes glad to have you aboard. As far as the R/M 1/48 kit goes it is a challenge. With sometime and patience it can be made in to a nice kit. The best feature of the kit is the options. It can be build into four different versions. Though it does require alot of cutting and fitting to convert them. A couple of the participants committed to this group build including me have just or are int the stages of finishing one. Thats what gave us the idea for a group build. I am about 75% done with converting to an early F 5 version in sky blue overall. I plan on using my Promodeller F/G/H kit in 1/48 for the groupl build. If I am feeling real crazy before Friday I might change my mind an use the Trumpeter 1/32 scale L-5 that is in my stash. That is if I am in a crazy mood or forget to take my meds!

David I am casting my vote for number 5 Yamamoto bites the dust! Mainly because the Lightning was the only plane we had that could have flown that mission and the blow it struck was fatal to the Japanese. Possible changing the war into South Pacific forever. That mission represents all that the Lightning was.

I'll join up!  I have a P-38J in progress for the South Pacific GB, I have a P-38M conversion in progress for the Monogram build (Both are 1/48th).  I'd join in with a F-5 (photo recon P-38 - 1/48th scale) for this one.  Or I can join in with another P-38J (1/72nd scale).

Maybe I should change my aviatar?  The P-38 is one of my favorite aircraft from WWII, and almost my all time favorite, next to the F-16.  Interesting that they are both made by Lockheed.... maybe I should get to know the F-35 some.....

My vote for the GB badge is the second photo.  It appears to not be 'theather specific' due to it's size.

I'm in!  Now to decide on a kitParty [party].  I lean toward 5 and 2, in that order for the logo.  I like the idea of ending Aug 15.  It seems appropriate for the subject.

As for rules, let's make it all scales.  Hopefully someone with more talent and patience than me will do a 1/32 lightning.  Besides, there is not quite the selection in a single scale for the P-38 that there is for other subjects.  I like no AM, makes me work on my basic skills and keeps me from getting in over my head.
