I agree, sleeping under the stars without a tent is not my idea of a good place to work on models Clown [:o)]Wink [;)]

Currently on a weather hold.  No tent, hard barracks.  I got into aviation so I could avoid the Army camping trips.  I like mattresses and air conditioning.

Sleeping in a tent though, does make you appreciate that nice warm bed.

Very nice Soulcrusher, that is what I pictured!

Heading to Ft Stewart tomorrow.  I won't be living in a tent, so I am going to take my R/M P-38 with me and get something done with it while I am there.  I may even take Glacier Girl and try to get a little painting done in the pit.  I will post some pictures when I get back.  See ya in 12 days or so guys!

Thanks for the kind review guys. I am really looking forward to starting the 1/32. Though I am sure the fit of the Trumpeter kit is far superior to the old Revellogram the sheer number of pieces 362 in all makes you wonder if you will ever be able to finish it! Plus I definelty have to figure out a way to display those beautifull engines provided in the kit with out hacking up the engine panels to bad. I do have one good shot of a P-38 being restored and it shows the engine with all of the cover removed.

I understand what you mean, I'd hate to mess up such a nice kit. But they almost bait you with such a nice engine and detail. I think the start date is 14 July (my 18th wedding anniversaryParty [party]), but I haven't heard of the end date.Cowboy [C):-)]

Man it's hard not to with all of that beautifull detail on those engines. It would be a shame to let it all stay hidden under the cowl. Thinning out the panels and separating the panels is a ton of work. I am still undecided but I really would like to do at least one side I just do not want to screw up an expensive kit though. As of right now I would say yes I am giong to try to open up one side. Have we set a start date for the build yet?

Soulcrusher,

I'm leaning towards the 82nd FG in Italy. I've been looking over the kit instructions and noticed that the nice engine will be closed in the nacelle. Do you have any plans for opening the nacelle to display the engine? I think I'd like to try it.Cowboy [C):-)]

Lookin' good there, Soul! I'm messing around with some colors tonight but I have to make mine look believable on an aluminum (aluminium) finish. I'm starting with gunmetal and slowly adding black and red. I hope to have new pics up on the Let There Be Lightning thread this weekend.

Here she is. Kind of a warm up for the group build. It was my first attempt at F 5 recon lightning. Weathering this color is alot harder than your typical greens and greys. There are alot of things I am not satisfied with on this build but was kind of doing it as an experiment. It will  never win any prizes but I still thing it looks pretty cool. The blue definetly stands out in a case full of green and grey camo aircraft.

I think I will mix up some light grey with a little brown in it and test spray it to see if I can get the desired effect. I will post some pics when done. Thanks for the help all.

Soulcrusher-
In every color reference that I have seen, the stains aft of the superchargers appears sort of gray brown.  The condition of the paint varies, but the F4/5 seemes to hold on to the paint in that area.

Soulcrusher, your lightning is looking good!, I will second rudratt's suggestion of a charred look.  I have a pic that shows a white-grey charred look with a bit of dark colours (brown-gray?) fading away down the boom.

I guess we will not be modeling the same plane then seeing that the two kits have different decal options. I guess you have not made up your mind yet.

I found a pic of a P-38 painted in a sort of haze-blue camo, and it looked like the paint was burnt right off behind the exhaust, leaving a sort of charred look & bare metal.

Soulcrusher-
I can see what you mean about the stripes but better luck next time.  It still looks like a winner.  With your build and the FSM article in the back of my mind, I may just have to go out and do one my self.  My kit of choice?  Of course I will most likely fall back on R/M.  I know that it has issues but I enjoy this kit for some reason.  The one that I am working on now is probably the 10th one that I have done since I was 10 or so.  I guess it's a nostalgia thing.

I can't wait to see those 1/32 jobs though.  I figure that I will see what you go through before I get one.  As long as it is better than RoG, I will probably get one though.

Thank you for the kind words there Modelman8. It is not easy to mask stripes on both of those booms! NucMedTech it ain't worth going over the edge unless you can drag someone with you! We must compare notes on this build seeing we are the only ones going up to 1/32. What decals does the Hobbycraft kit come with? The Trumpeter comes with two choices printed by Eagle Edititions! Itsy Bitsy II and Maj Donald Campbell's plane with a moose skull on the nose. I think I am going to do Itsy Bitsy II. I would post a pic of the art but some of it involves a single finger sticking up out of a fist and I do'nt think FSM would appeciate me posting them here.

I am almost done with my Revell 1/48 F 5. I did not try to fix every seam or ill fitting part. Just tryed to make it look respectable. I definelty be interesting to see those of you that have decided to do it for the group build just how much you can get out of such a basic kit. Me myself I went of the deep edge and decided to do the Trumpeter 1/32! Well here is a couple of pics. Not quite done yet. Hope to finish it before the end of the week and the start of the group build.

Soulcrusher

Nice work! Thumbs Up [tup] You have given me a 'bar' to reach.  What color did you use for the overall color?  I am thinking of using the Hazy Grey by Polli Scale.  From what I have learned, the color for the F-5 was one that was never exact from plane to plane due to wartime un-exact paint color mixing, not just in the field, but at the factory as well.

Did you build OOB, or did you add anything?

Nope she is just OOB. I knew from previous builds she would take massive amounts of sanding and scribing to build a great model so I did not go crazy filling seams. I filled in alot of them with Kristal Kleer because it is easy to wipe off and not lose the detail around it. I custom mixed the color myself. About 60% percent Tamiya X 14, 10% Tamiya XF 18 Meduim Blue and about 30% XF 2 Tamiya White. I whish it had turned out a little lighter when it was all done but I still like it. The cool thing about doing the F4 or F5 is the all of the different colors used. Here is a great web sight a forum member turned me onto that explains it all. The possibilities are almost endless as to what color some of these photo recon planes ended up with. I was trying to get more of a contrast from the fresh painted out stripes but you can still see it somewhat.
