The stuff Moses has been touting, and most of us have been using, is Tamiya's Polyester Putty. Great Models has it in stock. It's TAM87027. It's pricey at $12.50, retail $11.25, their cost. If you have problems getting it, and want it, it is in stock at my LHS and I could ship you a tube. Let me know.

One little comment, Ed. The crews did not camo the rear sides of the wheels. Remember, the camo was done in the field. I'm not sure how they got to the whole surface of the rear wheels.

Chris, Wow... Neat and clean build. I love it. The Zim looks great. How was the fit around the ball mount? It is PE right?

Looking forward to seeing more....

God Bless

hi everyone !

no building progress 2 report on my end...Sad [:(] too many other obligations
this week, but hopefully back on track (so 2 speak) over the weekend !

i'm enjoying everyone's tales of zimmerit purgatory and feeling really good about my decision to go with the ersatz: no zim or camo worries !
i know, u haven't lived 'til u've zimmed, but i'll save that experience 4 another time !Wink [;)]

good luck with the p/e and putty, kameraden !

Thanks to some wintery weather, I have the day off. So far I have finished the zim Big Smile [:D]
Big Smile [:D]Yeah!! [yeah] , attached the road wheel arms, stowage boxes, and other misc. parts. I'm about ready to put on the base color at least on the main body while I await the arrival of the grill pe and barrel. I'll try to get get some pics up of the rest of my zim this afternoon.

Gotter- Jump right on in to the fun. If you go with the Pantehr w/ pe just be patient and if like me, don't worry about the glue on your fingers, it'll wear off. This was the first time I messed with pe and I did'nt have to many problems with it.

Kenneth: The wheels fit great, nice and snug with no wobble, I may not even have to glue them. Thanks again.

Gotter: Jump on in! Welcome to our little group.

thanx 4 the fax... i got it from mom last nite !
some pages were a bit dark, & others were a bit too light ('stone knives & bearskins'-level technology on this end), but every little bit helps !
i hate 2 ask, but maybe u could try the scanner again ?
i probably have more than enough info to build this kitty, but i'd hate 2 think i missed something important.
sorry 2 b such a pest...
and thanx again !!!!!

Welcome Gotter,
Like they said..I think we are all running behind so feel free to bust it out.... The more the better.

I think on Saturday I am gonna yank out the trust ol' Tamiya Tiger II paint dummy and test out some new paint techniques. I haven't really done a serious attempt at snow camo before and it should be a challenge. (hard edge splinter pattern) over what looks like a darker green based camo.

God bless

Gotter,
hop in!
there are definitely some builders in the group waiting for parts to arrive,
or for exams to end, so you won't be the last to start!
no rules of that sort here, so join in the fun.

I think the Tamiya Panther w/ PE that you have is the same kit that
Chris, Eric & I are working on. Eric has decided against the PE Zim.
you will probably want to check the comments Chris (Lizard), Eric (Tigerman)
and i have made abt CA & the PE Zim if you decide to go that route.

Derek's (Claymore) weblink at the bottom of his posts goes to the group page.
so you can look there to see what is going on, and who is building what.
naturally, our posts lag our builds.

i hope you will join us!

Its not to late to join your group build is it.
I was about to start a Stug 3 G project, but I,ve got a choise of Panthers to build and I,ve done a ton of research (to be honest my life from the age of about 5 has been dedicated to german armour building & reading about, Idon,t know everything but I sure know a lot). Here is a list of what i will probably use.
1) Tamiya Panther G (with P.E). Or maybe Jagdpanther (Tamiya or Dragon) late.
2)Aber P.E.
3) Jordi Rubio barrel,
4) I,m gonna use the kit tracks as Tamiyas vinyl tracks for the Panther are fine.
Please let me know if its ok to start late otherwise I,ll carry on with the Stug project.
Thanks, Gotter.

Tigerman,
You may have already found this but just in case here is a link to a Zim technique. I have done a little testing and it seems to work great.http://firestorm1.topcities.com/how/zimmerit.htm

Good luck in whatever you come up with.

Claymore68, Does it look like those wheels will work? I hope they fit ok.

The tamiya steel wheels fit great on the DML axles.

God bless

Chris,
i think we will have to putty gaps in the PE Zim.
i bought Tamiya's polyester putty and their little Zim 'rakes' when i put my order in for the other stuff.
your Zim looks good!
i am falling behind in that department.
i finished the storage boxes, but decided to wait a bit on the big pieces.
i might try epoxy. the CA is making me nervous.

Eric,
sorry to hear of your PE Zim woes.
bold call on the 'by hand' route.
we eagerly await progress reports.

All,
did not do any PE Zim last night, but i did remove the remaining 16 road wheels
from the sprue, clean them up and then painted all 24.
(i count the middle ones as one per axle, since they are glued together).
i shot them w/ 4 parts dark yellow to 1 part flat white.
i figured i should lighten them for 'scale effect' and in preparation for the wash,
which will darken it.

for some reason (because i am an idiot?) i did not paint the drive sprockets or idler wheels when i had the airbrush going.
just plain forgot them. Clown [:o)]Evil [}:)]Angry [:(!]
well, that will give me another easy job tonight, i guess.

i have to figure out how i will do the camo on the wheels.
i am thinking about doing both sides of all wheels.
most wont show, but i can use the practice.
can't hurt, right?

gotta work.
ed.

I am impressed. I'm just not up to scratch building yet. I'm sure glad (and lucky) I got the Armor Research resin replacement turret before they went oop!
Question [?]What kind of road wheel set did Kenneth send to you? The ones I've got are white metal, but they have no detail on them. They look like metal copies of Tamiya's inner road wheels.

Thanks

Bill

Bill: The wheels are Dragon kit parts. Kenneth is replacing his with steel wheels so he sent me his extras.
Can you get some Grandt Line (sp?) or similar bolts to detail your road wheels?
There is a set of resin replacements for the Tamiya that come with new final drive housings, a bit pricy though.

Chris: Congrats on 4 stars!

sound like you guysare having fun with the PE zim! Mischief [:-,] I'm gonna have to do mine the hard way-putty![:0]

I managed to finish my tracks today (Fruil) and start on some PE but I think I will hold of on the PE for now. I want to get the turret and engine pack done first as they are major sub assemblys. I also want to get some hull corrections done before adding PE.

i got a little done tonight , all the suspension arms are installed and got half my roadwheels sanded and ready to paint. probably finish the other roadwheels and get started on the 2nd track tomorow.

you guys seem to be having a lot of fun with your pe Tongue [:P] hopefully mine won't be too bad , thankfully i don't have to try to line up those huge zim pe sheets, ca glue doesn't let you mess around very long. my only problem now is that i haven't yet made a final decision on what color i'll paint it. i'm starting to lean towards painting it red oxide then just randomly put dark yellow and green spots on it

Thanks Eric.
One thing I just thought about though. Is there any other way to fill in the gaps on the un mount other than how the instructions call for? Or do I need to try and get some putty that it calls for?

Allright, here's what I have so far. Please let me know how it is doing so far. I am sorta trying different little things out to find what works best for me. So far I have found that the handle from a cheap exacto that I got at the dollar store ( did'nt want to ruin the good blade on the pe ) works pretty good at pressing the pe down. The handle works good also long ways rolling the hull side pieces and other large ones to get wrinkles out. Don't know if anyone else does this but it seems to work. I know one thing for sure, don't think I have ever gotten so much glu on my fingers before.
Here's the link to the pics since I can't link the pics:
http://www.geocities.com/lizardqing/panther2.html

Check out the rest of the site if you would and let me know what you think. I redid it and moved cause I was tired of the basic look I had plus problems with angelfire.

Thanks.

Thanks Chris and Peter. I'm ok. a little Sad [:(]. Word of advice ......don't attach pe after drinking a couple of cups of coffee. LOL. Well not to knock the people using it still, but I was a little diaspponted in the pe anyway, so now I'll have to refer to an old FSM Oct. 2002? and try my hand in some homemade zim. Anyway, the grilles look good. I'll try to get as much done, before I can get some milliput? or whatever is the recommended stuff. I believe Jon is using some. Any suggestions are appreciated. Hope everyone has better luck than me.

Tigerman, sorry to hear about the PE. Seems like we are all learning a lot here. I think the other guys are luckier in starting later...they can learn by our mistakes. Me I'm doing July 1943....no zimWhistling [:-^]

Modelling Fiend, good to see some other sucker party join the fun.

I just wondered if the D had these or if Dragon had saw fit to change the design since it is a new hull.

Yeah there are some wide seams on the engine deck. I fussed with them last night. Someone found me a link to a new resin G cupola, but the dang thing was 20$.....Censored [censored] I don't think so...

The D has the grills moulded into the hull top already. The only 'major' components to be added are the cooling fan grills and engine bay hatch. The smaller hatch covers and handles being the only extra work. Guess I was a little luckier here!

The mesh for the radiator grills on the D are supposed to 'hang over' the gap between the intake grill and the rear hull plate, hence the 'wide open spaces' I mentioned. You need to put your own radiator components in there - otherwise you would see down to the kit floor. That's why I'm doing that.

I presume USD $20, that's about AUD$27-50, the Tiger Model Design D cupola was AUD$39 or USD $28.50.....so don't complain Big Smile [:D]. I love my hobby, but not that much (I'm sure my wife would want a divorce if I spent that much on just a cupolaDead [xx(])

That's got to hurt a little Tigerman. Good luck on doing it yourself though, hopefully it comes out better than the pe. I have been lucky so far with mine but I still have a way to go. Figure I'll try to knock out the rest tonite since I got my website done and kids are about to be in bed. May need to share some of them prayers for me as I have the complicated pieces to go.

Disaster!!! I was putting on some pe with what I thought was slower curing glue, when of course, it went on crooked and it was stuck. By the time I unmangled it, it was trashed. Angry [:(!]Disapprove [V] However, not all is lost, the more I was looking at it, the more disappointed I was in the pe zimmerit. Oh Moses, where for art thou? I'm going to take a crash course in doing my own zim. Please pray for me. This of course will totally disrupt my schedule. Blast it, now I'll have to do those bloody tracks. Angry [:(!]
