Almost there...

Painted the prop today. All that's left is a few more of the smaller decals and the prop, attenae wire and a little weathering. I cannot begin to tell you guys how much I appreciate all of your encouragement and support. If it hadn't been for you, this thing would still have some interior green and thats about it...

It's far from perfect but at least I am building on my skills

When this one is finished I'll post side by side pics of this one and my other Corsair. The other one is the only A/C that I ever finished. My first model period for that matter. That was about a year ago. I think I have come a ways since then.

Thanks so much Fellas.

Regards,

Jeff

Yeah Jeff Thumbs Up [tup] she is looking really good. Smile [:)]Wow!! [wow]  Approve [^]Yeah!! [yeah]  I really like how the paint turned out and the decals look flawless. Shaky hands ? from the excitement of almost being done or from an old injury ?

After this one is done whats up next ?

Let me first apologize for being remiss. Harv, I am so happy to hear that you wife Bev is doing better. My wife Cari had to have emergency surgery to remove her gall bladder a few years ago. It was considered routine but I was still beside myself with worry.

Got started on the decals. My hands have been kinda shaky latley so I'm taking it slow. Here is what I have so far.

Padakr, looks good so far. You too Steven. I attempted to decal over the nose but it ripped into about 5 pieces. Did I mention the shaky hands?...

Thanks for looking.

Regards,

Jeff

Had my bird sidelined for a while, waiting for paint.  I am making the transition to using an airbrush (my write up and pics at /forums/1051976/ShowPost.aspx#1051976).  But here is one pic to show where I'm at:

Into the home stretch now.

Ditto regarding your wife.  Sign - Ditto [#ditto]

On to the second part, the directive, if you will ... I have been making progress.  These two builds will be my 17th and 18th of this year, and I am striving to finish them this year so that I can take a break from modeling for, oh, a day or two ....

Both Corsairs are coming along nicely.  I have painted both and am in the process of decaling - all the major markings are in place but there are lots of "No Step" etc remaining.  I have a fair amount of external weathering in front of me, especially on the 1A as this was a Marine Corps bird that sat outside in the sun.  More on that later.  I have started to turn my attention to the detail parts, namely the landing gear.  I have just attached the brake lines but have yet to paint the gear.  Pictures to follow.

F4U-1A - this one is dark sea blue and intermediate blue (MM acrylics) with a dirty white (polly scale acrylic) underside (except the outer wings, which are intermediate blue)

F4U-1D - this one is dark sea blue (MM acrylic) overall

Landing gear

Now on to my weathering question.  My plan is to lighten the dark sea blue and spray it randomly to break up the new look of these birds.  But with the 1A I was thinking I'd read on here that one could do a very light dusting of something like tan to represent fading.  Will that work on these colors?  I am not going to use the drop tanks for the 1A so I painted them dark sea blue to use as a test subject, but I'm curious if I'm on the right track here.

Harv -  It has not found the wastebasket yet, my son asked me if he could "have it" to put on his shelf...Sigh [sigh] I cant let him have something that wrecked, it would need to be fixed up of course. After all the nice and helpful comments from you guys ~ it will find its way back to the bench again.

Scott - That was one of my most well guarded shamefull secrets - Ceiling Fans ! My old Hobby room I had in Las Vegas had one of those buggers. It was great for keeping the indoor climate nice and CA fumes at bay. But I dont even want to tell you how many times I had completed a wing and lifted it up off the bench to get a shower of Balsa .... Doh

You would of thought after the first time.... Kept me well rounded with the expletive exclamations...

Sean, sorry to hear the mishap, I know exactly what you are going through since I am Captian Klutz of the modeling world.  I have stuck RC models in ceiling fans and dropped a 1/96 Cutty Sark down two flights of stairs after coming home from a contest.  Non modelers cannot understand why we just don't give up, but to us, especially us who are klutz prone and cat owners, these types of incidents just allow us to try to creat even a bigger, better projuect without having to worry having a space for it when it is done.

Joe - In your Photo~bucket right under the box where the photo would be when or after you upload it says Reduce to then a size followed by a blue square box with a check in it then it says more options. This is where you can change the size of your photos.  I use 640 x 480 [large] for the pictures I load.

Now that looks much better Sean!!!!!! Great Work!!!!!!!!! Thumbs Up [tup] If you darken it as suggested it won't take much as that looks great to me and just the right color as I have seen in photos. I have one pic that shows the streak running almost to the tail albeit faint but its there. Great work!!

Sean, come on man - gotta be some way to salvage this hog. Ok, most of the etch may be toast, but I'm sure the pit still looks good and as you said the plastic is still useable.

Take this plastic and model it!

Joe, Photobucket is extremely easy to use.

From your photobucket screen (assuming you've logged in) click on the blue box labeled "choose files".  This should open a pop-up window with your picture files in it.  Select one (or more) photo(s) and hit enter.

Photobucket will start to upload the file.  Once it's uploaded, you'll see a smaller version of it on your screen.  Roll over the picture with your pointer and you'll be presented with a drop-down box with multiple options.  Go to the one labeled "IMG Code".  Left click on the code (in the box) to highlight it, then right click to open another option box and click on "copy".

Now, come to FSM and create a post.  When you're ready to post the picture, hit "Ctrl V" to paste (or right click to open the option box and click "paste").  It's literally like 5 clicks, start to finish.

Hope that helps.

Fred-

Thanks for the help!  Funny you mention this, I stopped by at my LHS yesterday and bought some Ambroid Pro-Weld and Tenax 7R.  CLipped off a couple of pieces of sprue to chip today to make myself some slurry.  I'll let you know how I get on with it.  Thanks again for the help fellas! Thumbs Up [tup]

Sean, sorry to hear about the incident - I did something similar on an earlier build.  I salvaged what I could and moved on.  Not much more you can do.

Frank, I personally hate using CA as filler and only use it on resin parts.  What you may want to try is making a styrene slush.  Take some scrap styrene (cut into itty bitty pieces) and mix with some styrene glue (ambroid/pro-weld/tamiya/etc) until you get a pasty consistency.  Then use a toothpick to fill your seams (use tape on either side of the seam to minimize over-run).  Remove the tape and sand when dry.  There's no shrinkage and since it's styrene, it sands, blends and paints just like the plastic around it.
