Well, she's on temporary hiatus, yet again.  I ended up obliterating most of the raised panel ines while sanding the seams.  So, I'm ordering a rescribing tool from missionmodels.

Just got this picture to show you of these front landing gear doors.  Not much to scale eh?

Thanks Harv, I forgot about the Lonestar sets and I too am interested at looking at the AIRES set.

I was thinking about making a set out of brass tube.

I know metal legs are made by Scale Aircraft something or other, but they are for the Trump and dont think they would fit. Last night at work, was digging around our shop and came across some small enough springs to use on the outer part of landing gear. I think they will work. If you plan on doing yours out of tube, think of me, ok?.................Harv

Came up with something you guys might want to try.  Tried to take a picture of the idea but the macro on my camera won't allow the shot to reproduce well so will describe it.

Glue wands: Was lighting a fire in the fireplace (...bear with me, please) and you know how those long match sticks are (10 inches long)?  I thought, hey what if I broke the match head off, leaving about 7 1/2 inches of 1/8 sq. wood for a handle.  Made up three handles.  Then I got three sewing needles, the kind with a thread hole in the end, the largest being about 1/32 inch diameter, then a smaller dia. needle, and then another smaller dia. needle.

Take each needle and file the thread end off just enough until you create a small fork shaped opening.  The three needles will produce three different width fork openings.  My fork lengths are about 1/8 inch long.  Take a pin vise and drill an appropriate size hole for a pin into the end of a wood match stick leaving about 3/4" to 7/8" of the pin sticking fork end out from each match stick.  One pin to one match stick thereby creating three different size CA glue wands.  Glue each pin into its matchstick with thick CA and bind the wood where the pin was inserted for about 1/4" with sewing thread.  Soak this thread and about an extra inch of the wood wand with thin CA.  LIghtly sand each wand to smooth the wood surface.

You now have three different sized wands for picking up CA per your modeling needs via capillary action and you can place the glue exactly where you need it in small quantities via the same capillary action.  I place a small amount of whatever thickness CA I'm using on a small paper plate and dip the fork into the glue.  Capillary action draws the glue up the fork.  The length of the wand gives great control and you can reach into areas easily when required.

That's a great "tip" Piperjoe! Seriously, I'm going to have to try that out soon! Thanks!

Yeah, that is a good idea.  I have a left over sewing kit.  It's just a useless pouch sitting in a drawer....  That's it, it's history,

I finished my Mustang today, and I started my F4U-5N.

Thanks, guys!

Remember to go slowly when sanding the metal away, especially just before you sand away the thread loop and create the "fork".  You want maximum fork length to hold the glue.  Have fun and be careful of the pin's sharp end!  (Don't ask me how I know about that Whistling [:-^] )  Use a small piece of balsa, or similiar, and stick the pin into that as you work on the thread end with sandpaper.

Cheers!

Glue wands sound like a great idea for the various amounts and locations that CA is applied.  I use CA extensively in my ships and your idea sounds like a good one.  On a side note, anyone use the Lock Tite CA brush?  This stuff is great, less expensive, and everyone sells it.

Back to my landing gear dilema.  I ordered a set of Airies, if they don't fit ,they will make a good patter to scratchbuild a set from.

Cheers,

Scott

Harv, it looks like whatever you prefer. I went through 5 different Corsair books and they all show mixed patterns. Most of them you cant make out, as they are moving but there are planes with the smooth then some will have diamond tread. Being's the short supply of resources  during the war I would not be suprised to see a aicraft with one of each.

Edit----- I am seeing a pattern that most of the Diamond treads were on late WWII Corsair's and Korea.  But this is not fact as I said most of the pics you can not make out and some are not dated. I am just going by the references I have and some spare time, I am not an authority on this subject or any come to think of .... Confused [%-)]

Harv, I too looked at some photos and it looks like more smooth tires show up.  For what it's worth, I checked my Tamiya F4U-1D kit and the tires are smooth.  I'm going to use them as they came in the kit on my build.

I ACTUALLY STARTED my build today!  Working on the "office".  Went to the LHS with my wife Saturday and SHE helped carry 19 Tamiya paint jars and 2 cans of Tamiya AS 8 paint to the counter...and she was smiling!!!  Angel [angel]

Sounds like a keeper to me. i knew my wife was a keeper when i went to the LHS to pick up a Tamiya Lotus Super 7 (yes my blood is also part motorhead) and she picked up a Dodge charger kit to build at the same time. she even agreed to wait until i get back from deployment to continue working on it.

Thank you, I really liked it when I found it so I added it to my signature.  It is a print by Stan Stokes titled "Corsair of the Intrepid" available here.  Thanks! Thumbs Up [tup]

Navypitsnipe: (what exactly IS that?)  Sounds like you've got a real winner too! Angel [angel]

Thanks, Frank!  What a neat site to visit and look through all the aircraft paintings/prints. I appreciate the link.  Some great Corsair images there.  I believe you selected the best one. Thumbs Up [tup]

Well I finished my ordering spree today. From Jerry Rutman, I ordered a prop and hub, and wheel update(tires) set. On a side note and off topic, I also ordered resin sets for the Trump P51c from him. A complete pit and also a wheelwell set that includes upper wing halfs with lamminar flow detail. Cant wait!! Doing a little work on the corsair pit today, we`ll see how it goes....Harv

I hope to be starting soon....must ...finish...B-24.....P-40....and ... Corsair ...for other group builds first...must resist urge to tear into another airplane.

Fortulantely I have a wee bit-o'time to do this.

Oh & Gig, I might have to ammend the "no AM parts" I found a PE cockpit set I have for it....I might get really brave & dive into that part of this world.

Have at it, Dave.

I've been scratchbuilding parts FOR my PE set - what a world.  I pay money to have someone else do the work (in this case, Verlinden) and I still end up improving their stuff.

I've spent the last few hours making scale ammunition out of styene, .032 solder, lead foil and paint.

Here's how it all turned out:

Don't worry, in real life, it looks much better Laugh [(-D]

Enjoy,

Fred

Oh and Fred, while your at it, could you make me up a couple of scaled feet of the ammo?
