You know Sean after reading your comment about tossing models I had to come check this out. You sure are making it look easy. I have only praise and am glad you haven't tossed it. Also I am amazed that there are more modelers here other than Frank, I thought he was a lone wolf Corsair fan! Tongue [:P]

The "Standoff" has ended with the Corsair. She went into the booth first thing today. I used Model Master Insigna Blue enamel FS35044. The battle is slowly coming to an end with this kit. Evil [}:)]

Paint ! Here she is all blue in down in the booth Wink [;)]

Now stop showing off, 'cause you're going to scare everyone else away and it would hardly be a group build if it were just you Wink [;)] Laugh [(-D]

Thanks Sean!  The little springs are just stretched sprue, which I added some texture to to represent the springs.  I thought about real tiny springs, but they probably would have looked out of scale.  I hope you are able to end your stand-off soon! Big Smile [:D]

Richie-Thanks, and I do know what you mean.  Having the struts compressed all of the way would probably be fine for a fueled-up bird with bombs and rockets.  I wish there was a relatively easy way to extend them on the Tamiya kit.  Maybe on the next one I try making some new scissor links and add a piece of sprue for a lengthened landing gear.  Trumpeter seems to have gone to the other extreme with their kit, molding them almost completely extended!  Thanks again, no offense taken! Approve [^]

Frank That's really nice work!!!! One thing I noticed, nothing of your work, Is that I wish you could have extended the struts a bit! The oleo is completely collapsed! You land it like that and you'll be a lowrider at the snap of a finger!!!! In other words there wouldn't be any 'coosh'. They should have moulded them with at least a bit of chrome showing. Knocking the mouldings not your work , wanna make that clear!

ACK!!!

Had to go all the way to page two in order to find this thread.  Have some progress on the Corsairs to share.  Masked and painted the black and white stripes on the arresting gear, and I added quite a few bits to the L/G, including the retraction springs, anti-rotation link, brake lines, and the lug and deck tie downs.  Also got the outer wings on the FAA bird.

Sean- Excellent work on your bird!  When I saw that first photo of the tire, I must admit I didn't like the look.  But in the second photo looking at the model from the front starboard quarter, they look just right to my eye.  They have that brownish/black color, and just the rigth amount of "sheen" to look like real tires.  I say stick with em, they look perfect! Thumbs Up [tup]

Sean that is looking GREAT!!!!! Thumbs Up [tup] I think the tires look good as is! They certainly couldn't be hurt by a lil subtle pastel work! Well done on your progress.

Harv - Thanks for the approval, The shiny was done with Bare Metal Foil that I had hid away from my "Auto " days..

I got the tire color dulled down some, I'm hoping I will be able improve them some more with some  weathering pastels.

CS 1

Well Imagine my Suprise when the Gear Assembly did not fit under the "sheetmetal"! Dead [xx(]

I had to do quite a bit of filing to "shoehorn" them in. But I am glad I caught it now before painting the Fuse.

CS 2I have heard the Vicious Rumer that the Wings Droop really bad when attached. If that is so I believe I will need to be sedated Censored [censored]

Sean, thats a bummer about your tires. Wish I could help you out. But the legs look fantastic. Very good job on them. Do you also use foil on the shiny part? ...........Harv

I have came to a crossroads on my Cosair - The kit has rubber tires, which I would need to paint with Acrylics so they wont be "Sticky" for the rest of my life. I dont have any acrylic paint for the used tire look. Hobby shop is 80 miles one way, and I dont like the kit well enough to pop for resin tires.... Maybe I can find a pair in those Revell and HawseG's kits I have Sigh [sigh]

Here's the struts after assembly.

St 1Looks like the Ground crew needs to get a rag and some fuel and spiff them up....

Luke - Looks like your off to a great start. Looking forward to your next pics - next time increase the size option for guys like me losing his eyesight Sigh [sigh]

Jeff - Thanks for checking in on my mess ! Frank is "Right On the Money" on how to soften your lines. If it is a "straight" line I will lift the edge of the masking tape to where it will blend also.

Harv -  Stop Clown [:o)] around and get back to work on that Corsair  Wink [;)] Next thing you know the Garage will be too cold to work......

Frank - I took a few days off from the Corsair (Wife and I took a mini Vacation) any way while I was on the road I was thinking aboput those horrible struts - Long story short after some putty work and some Baremetal Foil I had since 1990 plus some wire, topped off with my ever so exclusive knowledge of Hydraulic leakage - they look pretty nice now !(or used)

Frank, your the second one today that didn`t get my PM`s.   I just said that the guy you asked about the F-16  Thundrebirds in the LSP forum, seems abit shadey, and accourding to several other posts. So being the comic I am was poking fun at you, and asked if you were glad he didn`t answer you, thats all............Harv

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated!

I'm looking forward to seeing your pics.  If you think the demarcation line is a bit to sharp, what about cutting a piece of paper to the shape of the line then use little balls of Handy Tak or Silly Putty to keep the edge of the paper a millimeter or two off of the surface.  Then, if you spray agin the colors, there should be a softer line.

Frank and Sean,

You guys are really doing some outstanding workThumbs Up [tup]

I finally got my painting done for the most part. This is my first attempt at 3 color cammo and I think it looks too "hard edged" on the sides of the fuesalage. Just don't have the skills yet to make it blend I guess. I will take some pics tomorrow and you guys can tell me what you think.

Regards,

Jeff

Thanks fellas! Big Smile [:D]

Mike- I'm looking forward to seeing your FAS bird, not many of them modeled here.  As for your question about the backplate, those are exhaust pipes molded onto the back.  On my last build, I painted the whole deal black then used rustall and a few washes/pastels to give them a rusted look.  HTH!

Lil bit of progress this wee hours am after work. Got the PE grills in the wing roots and top halves of the wings on my corsair put together. Letting it cure till when I get home in the morning. Then mount to the fuse and start surgery on the flaps. When flaps are off then I will tackle the fuse to wing joint and tidy that up.

Hi Daywalker,

Good to see your production line moving along!

I got a start on my Tamiya -1D today, masking for the first round of pre-assembly painting, I'm hoping to shoot the green tomorrow. I did some minor assembly on the cockpit, the rearward four parts that can all go into IG as one. I'll spray the forward cockpit unit individually and take a shot at some dirt on those slats, though not too much as the aircraft I'm building had been overhauled quite recently (I think, I'll have to verify that). I know for certain the camo was very fresh, perhaps between about two and about six weeks old, and as the plane went down on the third of four days of action (July 17th 1969) she didn't have time to fade or generally wear. Chips and dust, yes, and carbon staining, the FAS planes were flown hard, but the paint was barely dry before they were in combat. All the same, the paint was said to be of poor quality, so it may have failed quickly.

It's a fairly complex kit, not a difficult one but there are things to think about, orders to do things. She should be a delight to build.

One thing I'm curious about. I was going to use the open cooling vanes to depict her on the ground between sorties, after re-arming. The area behind the engine mounting plate will be just visible. Are those exhaust pipes molded on the back? Should the section be painted black for a dark recess or should the pipes be a burnt-metal shade, like the external outlet stubs? This is one of the details that would never occur to you before you actually see the parts!

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Had to go to page two to find this thread! Shock [:O]

Drew- Looking forward to seeing yours come together, Mr. Corsair Guy! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Diophantus- Looks like you are well on your way!  DO you have any larger pics per chance?  Those are a little difficult to see much in.

Spent a lot of today in the shop working on my builds.  For all of the work I put in on these, the photos don't really show much.  Made fourteen attempts to carve one wayward panel line on the night fighter, and ended up filling and smoothing it and repeating on the other side which was done perfectly THE FIRST TIME!  The other model went relatively smoothly there.  Oh, well- no one will probably notice except me.

I also did a little painting on the engines, and they are shaping up nicely.  Five different shades on the cylinders, and they are beginning to look like I want them.  Still need a wash and some more drybrushing, but they are looking better.  Then, the plug wires!  That ought to busy them up a bit.  Well, not a lot to show but the airframes are (finally) ready for the outer wing panels, and the engine is in the paintshop.  More to come! Big Smile [:D]
