I have F4U-1A and 1D (Tamiya 1/48) and I will build both.

Just looking into the sprues I did not see any diference other than:

- canopy

- armament mountings

Anyway,

I have a little problem.

The color specification asks for

Extra Dark Sea Grey (FS36118) -

however this FS # is a MM Gunship Gray not an Extra Dark Sea Grey.

Can anyone help me resolve this puzzle ???

A few other differences are antenna masts present or not, tailwheel length, fairing on tailwheel doors present or not, and step in starboard inner flap present on F4U-1D but not F4U-1A (need to fill in on -1A)

There may be some other differences as well, but I can't recall right now.  Someone may be able to point out some others.

As for the color question, I am at work so don't have my handy color chart available.  If someone else hasn't answered your question by the time I get home tonight, I'll take a look and post for you.

GZt, according to my Handy Dandy FS Paint chip chart- FS36118  is Maritime Upper Surfaces after 1939... SO I would believe it to be used for a variety of painting. MM most likely calls it Gunship Gray as that is most likely the common'st  usage. (yeah I am feeling creative with my own spelling today) You are most likely safe to use this color. Its not like there was a paint store around every corner.

I think those Corsair shouters must be a little Fume Loopy ....

Hey Daywalker

Be careful about that starboard flap step cutout on the -1D.  This was apparently a late production feature. I have many photos of -1Ds without the cutout, plus several photos of -4s without it, too. I don't know if there was any overlap in their production at Vought. One possibility is that Vought switched production to the -4 while Goodyear was still building       FG-1Ds, and the step cutout came after that, with both versions picking it up. Or some may have been replacement flaps.

Does anybody have more info on this?

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, life's been a real kick in the pants as of late.  Now, I'm going on vacation starting the middle of the week, so I won't be around for another week or so after tuesday.

Frank, that's a purty lookin' bird you've got goin.  Looks like you'll be finished any day now.

Joe, I hope eerything's ok - and I hope you know you're always welcome back whenever you're ready.

I hope I can get a few progress pics up over the next few days even though I haven't gotten a chance to do much.

Thanks fellas!  I gave her a few coats of Future this evening, and hope to add some decals later this week.  More to come!

Chris- For the cockpit masking, I used dozens of tiny cut pieces of Tamiya yellow tape, followed by some larger pieces to fill in the center.  Tedious I know, but I like the way it turns out.

Sean, as for the color I used, it is Gunze Navy Blue (don't recall the stock number, but I'll find it when I get home).  As for the photo session as soon as she got home, she came home sick so went straight to bed.

Quick question from someone not too Corsair savvy.  I'm doing an F4U-4, the instructions call for zinc chromate in the cabin and wheel wells but doesn't specify green or yellow, which one is it?
