Well boys, I'm back Big Smile [:D].  Looks like everyone's been keeping themselves busy in my absence Laugh [(-D]

So, I did some work on it last night.  I added the AM gunsights and attached the wing assembly.

Fred great job so far! I realy like the cowling flaps. I would like to make one small sugestion. You may need to add small backing plates to the back of flaps to close up the gaps abit. I noticed on ref. photos they acualy slid between. Would like to see a close up of the wingfold, any luck. It looks great

Thanks guys.

The PE set actually comes with pieces to put between the cowling flaps, but I think they're too small.  I may have to fabricate something from some lead foil that I have.  But to be honest, the instructions for adding the flaps are so incredibly vague that i have no idea if I even did it right.  In retrospect, I would have been better off just leaving the kit flaps as-is.

Oh well, you live, you learn.

The wing flap is going to prove to be a humongous headache.  Even with the PE set, you need to fabricate half of the actuating rods and hydraulic lines.  Plus, just getting the wing to stay in place long enough to dry is going to be a challenge.  I don't know if I should put the landing gear, or the wing, on first.  I have a feeling that no matter which one I put on first, the other will get snapped off while working on the other.

Fred,

Great work.  I love the added touches of the open gun bays on the left and folded wing on the right.  The gunsight and controls on top of the pit look great.

Harv, It's late and I'm up, but... it was a long night at work.  We just try to keep em' flying.  There's no Corsair progress to report tonight.

Chris

since i'm the new guy here might aswell show you where i'm at. I picked up revells 1/48 F4U-4 dirt cheap. Its been years since i bult one so i figured why not. Now we know how detailed the stock bucket is:

stunning isn't it

Well since it's barely more then a lump of plastic i figured i would take a crack at scracthbuilding one. Never done any scracthbuilding before and the kit was cheap so why not.

So here's what i've come up with so far. really the only materials i'm using is some left over PE, wire, Balsa wood, and a pepsi can. after all the cutting this is what was left of the kit piece:

here's the gauge cluster so far:

rear bulkhead before:

after:

and the new seat ( this is where the pepsi can came into play):

and here is a quick mock up of everything:

So thats where i'm at right now, still lots of work left before the cockpit is ready for paint but so far so good

cheers

Cliff

Nice work Cruzr! Vast improvement over kit offerings definately. Is that the old Monogram kit under new box? If so, my brother had that kit back in 1977 or 1978 i believe. Does it still have all the moving bits they had back then that drastically reduces scale appearance because of the bulky hinges? Heat up the screwdriver to melt the axle to hold the wheels on too? Classic kit to say the least.

Cliff, Greg- Great work fellas!  I really want to work on mine, but gotta wait a little longer to be sure the clearcoat is dry before handling. Sigh [sigh]

Greg- As for those small parts, I am not sure.  Do any of them look like bases for an antenna?  Some of the FAA birds had whip aerials installed.  Just an idea...

Greg, those small parts are vents (air intakes) added by the brits to the cowel. They were to cool and power (back up venturi system) their radio sets.

I have no pics on my computer, but a quick search should yield the info you are looking for.

Richie: lol i found the date stamp on the inside of the right fuselage, 1963. i don't have to melt the landing struts but the engine is molded into the front cowling, which is going to make things interesting. The hinges for the wings are sad to say the least. If i don't have any luck makeing new ones i'll just glue the wings down. I am going to cut the flaps out of course.

OMG, didn't know that kit was THAT old! I've seen a small influx of 1/48 USN planes in Revell boxes and was weary of getting one because of that reason. I had the Hellcat about the same time as my brother had the corsair, and it was the same thing. The wings folded, and the hinges were anything but scale, although functional. However the Hellcat DID have the melted axle wheel retention. Pulled the tailhook out and the tail wheel lowered. 90 degree rotating retractable main gear with very chunky anti-rotate locks. Alas, when I built that kit I was about 11, and I had FUN.Big Smile [:D]

Dave, glad you can come out and play with us. Welcome aboard! And yes, I believe it is the same engine. I have the same one for my 1D, but havent had the chance to do any damage to it as late. Still need to get lights up in the garage( my new man cave). If I`m wrong, I`m sure someone will chime in............Harv

There was a difference in engines between the -1 and-4 Corsairs, the reduction gear case is much bigger and has an extra bolted flange up behind the propeller.  It's the same difference you find going from the P-47D to the M or N.  Still an R-2800, but visibly different.  It's a difference Hasegawa missed on their 1/48 -4, and so did I when I built that kit.Sigh [sigh]

Engines & Things sell almost every model of R-2800 there is in several scales so they would prolly have the right one. Make sure you do your research for the particular plane, because the catalog that I have it lists individual models and the appropriate aircraft. Some of the model numbers have 'W' (water injection) or 'WA' (water-alchohol injection) in them so I assume there are external differences on most. I just received a set of 4 R-2800-CB17 for my Heller DC-6B that I am going to make a Firebomber out of. Different models also have different Horsepower ratings as well. Like most enthusiasts, its nice to know the right numbers are under the hood.Wink [;)]

Where would I find that data, the "W" or "WA", and the stuff after R-2800?

Is it worth it if I am not going to be displaying it in any fashion that would highlight the engine? The cowling will cover all but the front.
