The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

Thanks fellas!  I am really glad you like it. 

Drew- Wait till you see the little PE filler caps on the tanks, very cool!   I guesstimate that I have about 12 hours into those tanks alone.  Spent a few hours with a round cutting bur thinning them to paper thickness so that I could dent 'em up good.  Then, lots of layering and scratching up the paint.  I am most proud of them!   The main color I used was Gunze H-54 "Navy Blue" with a few custom mixes added for some variety.  I am also VERY happy with the fit of the outer wings thanks to a tip from a friend...

This morning, I masked then painted the center hub on the prop as well as all of the little lights.  After all of that masking and painting of the hub, I realized that I had the wrong one on!  You can see the narrow chord blades in the previous photos.  Luckily, I had one for a -1D that I painted as a practice propeller a month or so ago.  WHEW!!!  Glad I caught it before I finished it!  Here she is with the new prop.

I have been working away in the shop most of the last two days, flying along on the Corsair.  Yesterday morning she was just a painted and clearcoated airframe with a box of painted parts.  I have nearly finished her, the only reason I couldn't finish it today was the fact that I forgot to paint the gunsight!   I am off to the paintshop right now to square it away.  The canopy parts are only set on for the photo, awaiting the painted gunsight to be installed first.  Then it's only the antenna wires and finished!  Well, here's how she looks right now:

That looks great.  I'm almost glad you had that little decal problem because I can't imagine that one looking any better.  I know you're not quite done, but the it looks spectacular.  I especially like the look of the beaten up drop-tanks.  The demarkations look good too.  It's very regular, but doesn't look like a hard edge.

Confession time...It's been 4 weeks since my last model build...can't seem to find the time between family time and life..In the meantime, I've been enjoying everyone's progress...it keeps me motivated.  In order to complete both my projects, I think I will work on my Stuka...then when it's drying or setting, move to my Corsair.  Multi-tasking baby!!!!

I am in the same boat.  I have been away for work the past three weeks and have to catch up on family time and home chores. but am ready to prime my 1/32 Corsair and hopefully put some color to it soon.

Daywalker, great finish, it that the tree tone blue and white or all blue finish?  I want to do my in overall sea blue.

well i haven't been able to do anything on my F2G so far. the gun barrels are resin as is the interior the engine the wheelwells....... and i don't have my dremel onboard, so now i await the package with my dremel. as for my fictional Corsair V, the wings have been assembled and the interior is started. i've come up with a few different weapon loads for it but haven't decided which one i'll go with, maybe you all can help me out, here's what i have so far:

1.

---2 Depth charges on each wing in place of rockets

---1 Mk 13 torpedo on centerline, with one depth charge on each Fuselage pylon

2.

---2 rockets and 1 depth charge on each wing (rockets outboard of depth charges)

---1 Mk 13 torpedo on centerline, with one depth charge on each Fuselage pylon

3, 4.

either of those 2 but Drop Tanks instead of depth charges on fuselage pylons.

i'm not sure yet if i can fit the drop tanks and the torpedo but if i can fit both i will probably do one of those 2

On the gunsight, I stayed up late burning the midnite oil and up early this morn to finish it up, here it is:

I cleaned up the seams, then used my punch and die set to punch out a disk of Tamiya tape to use as a mask for the top reflector (?).  After a drybrush session this am, I punched out a disc of clear plastic from a blister pack and filed a flat spot into it and mounted it to the top of the sight.  A little brown paint on the crash pad, and voila!  One finished gunsight.

Scott- This one is in an overall Sea Blue scheme.  The reflections on the fuselage do tend to almost give it a multi-color look.

How's the interior detail, out of the box, on this bird?  Have pics of the pit?  I've grown totally frustrated with the hasegawa kit.  I don't think it'll ever recover from the sad, sad attempt at scribing the panel lines.  They're just too far gone for this bird to be up to my personal standard.

So, I just ordered the Tammy 1D.  Maybe, just maybe, I can salvage the AM pit (maybe even the gun bay) from the hase bird and retrofit them into the tammy.

I hate to give up on a kit this far along, but I'm more than willing to accept when something is beyond my salvaging capabilities.

Bummer about your Corsair, but I do feel your pain!  Last year, I had the same thing happen to me.  Botched the paint job and ended up ripping the model apart to save what I could.  Luckily, I was able to salvage the cockpit and engine/prop, which I used on the bird currently underway.

As for the detail, the Tammy kit is good, though a little time spent with some wire and little bits will pay off.  These are the photos I took last year while it was underway:

Sorry the photos are kinda dark, I've upgraded my photo shoot equipment since then.  

The belts are Eduard PE, everything else is box stock.  HTH!

If you have never built the Tammy kit, you're in for a treat!  If you are planning on building it with the wings extended, be careful aligning them.  DrewH has a great tip for doing it, perhaps he'll share it with us here?

  Got a quick question for you all. Right of the seat by floor, I have bottle standing upright. Is it an oxy bottle or fire surpresent bottle or what? And what color is it suppose to be?

  FWI for all doing the BRIT version, I`ve seen pit pics that show the rear bulkhead and seat in aircraft grey. Also both in black. These are both restored aircraft though............Harv

Ok Frank, just for you

 Getting the inner and outer wing panels to line up right can be a bit of a bear. So I came up with an assembly sequence that solves any problems (for me anyway). First, assemble the inner wing halves as instructed while adding the wing ribs (B27 & B8) with parts B11 & B25 installed also.

Now, here's the tricky part, glue the outer wing ribs (B9 & B26) to the upper outer wing panel. Once dry, add the outer upper wing panel to the top of the inner wing assembly. Pay careful attention to the flush fit and dihedral as the glue sets. Then I add the lower outer wing panels making them as flush as possible making adjustments as needed. This eliminates any step at the wing fold. The rest of the assembly is straight forward.

That is the Oxygen bottle. Now there is some color questions about them. Yellow is the standard now and was for the Army Air Corp. The Navy on the otherhand.......... Best guess was a medium green or blue. I think (some one correct me if I'm wrong) the the navy's fire extinguishers were yellow during that time and that's why the diffrence. I have always painted mine green and no one has said anything about it.

Drew, thanks, so much for the tutorial on the wing assembly.  Hows the detail in the wingfold area if you decide to build it folded?  I might still be able to get away with my original plan of one wing up and one with an open gunbay.

As for using your AM cockpit on the Tamiya kit, I have to tell you that the office on the -4 is quite different from the cockpit on the -1's.  4's had a cockpit floor, where the earlier models were open all the way to the bottom of the fuselage.

Harv- Excellent work there!  Love that duct hose, wish I had seen that before I did mine!  Ah, well...I am CERTAIN there is another Corsair in my future!

ok, I'll keep the pit for another -4D.

Does anyone know if the Aires gunbay for the Tammy -1 will fit in the Tammy -1D?

Now she's in many, many pieces, but I salvaged the pit and gunbay.  Between the scribing fiasco and the gut feeling i had about the wing fold, I think she's in a better place now.

Gents, I finished my Corsair early this morning!  Burned the midnight oil till 1 am local time, but glad I did as I slept like a baby knowing she was finished.  Here are some pics, thanks for looking! 

Built mostly OOB, with Eduard seatbelts being the only addition.  Painted with Gunze acrylics, and I used the provided kit decals.  I had originally intended to use a set from Super Scale for a bird from VMF-312 (checkerboards) but the decals really did not fit so I opted to build a fairly fresh airframe.  I like the contrast of the smooth, semi-gloss airframe and the really beat up napalm tanks.  The rockets have added arming wires with tiny blobs of glue painted to represent the connectors.  Added some brake lines from fine wire, and the antenna from 2lb fishing line.  The drop tanks alone took many, many hours but they are worth it IMHO.  Thanks for taking a look fellas!
