John, the reason I'm going with solder is that it doesn't have to be pulled at all. Just get a nice, straight piece, thread it through the holes in the masts and glue it in. There's no stress, so it won't sag and since I don't have to pull it taut, there's no stress on the aerial masts, either.
Frank, the fuel spill was easy. I made a really thin wash of turpenoid and burnt umber oil paint. I wiped a bit around the perimeter of the filler and then, using a 20/0 brush, pulled some down along the fuselage. Then I added a small drop near the filler and let it follow the path I made. Then I cranked my airbrush up to 20 PSI and shot air at it from an angle. The high pressure blast just made the wash stream away in a more natural fashion.
