The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

Well, thanks to mucho rain, I got a chance to stay in and work.

I'm going for a dirty/faded paintjob - like it's been sitting out in the sun and sea air for way too long

There's obviously some cleanup still left to do aswell as the decals, but it's almost there.  I'll have to redo the faded paint application as it got washed out when I put on the Future.

Frank (Daywalker) - you posted some pics some time back prior to finishing your Corsair.  One showed your canopy before installation.  It really looks great - did you use a market mask or do your own?  I'm about ready to fuss with mine - any advice?

That pit looks amazing, the weathering is awesome, the open gun bays are an interesting touch, and the 1 folded wing makes for an uniquely interesting display.  Great work. 

What did you use for the "Tape" in front of the canopy?  It actually looks like tape. 

Is the ariel disconnected for maintenance?

Chris, the aerial isn't disconnected for maintenance, it just came out really, really bad .  I'm replacing it with some .0015 gauge solder and I'll post some new pics.  For some reason, I couldn't get the wire to tighten up without snapping.  Never had that problem before

The tape is actually just one of the kit supplied decals.  A lot of decal solvent and some weathering and voila - instant tape.

Well done there!  You really nailed the worn look of a combat ready Corsair.  Gotta agree with Richie, the fuel spills down the fuse look perfect, how exactly did you get that effect?

Glad to hear you are going to replace the aerial, that's the only thing about this build build I would change.  Awesome work Fred!

I think you will have trouble with solder, tensile strength is too low.  I have started using EZLine and find it is much better than monofilament or my old standby of my daughter's hair.

John, the reason I'm going with solder is that it doesn't have to be pulled at all.  Just get a nice, straight piece, thread it through the holes in the masts and glue it in.  There's no stress, so it won't sag and since I don't have to pull it taut, there's no stress on the aerial masts, either.

Frank, the fuel spill was easy.  I made a really thin wash of turpenoid and burnt umber oil paint.  I wiped a bit around the perimeter of the filler and then, using a 20/0 brush, pulled some down along the fuselage.  Then I added a small drop near the filler and let it follow the path I made.  Then I cranked my airbrush up to 20 PSI and shot air at it from an angle.  The high pressure blast just made the wash stream away in a more natural fashion.

Well, I replaced the antenna with a fiberoptic antenna.  Personally, I think it's the bee's knees.  Let me know what you think

I think I'm actually the happiest I've ever been with a build.  I can't say there's much that I'd really change or do much differently.
