Hey simpilot34

There was a SuperScale sheet (72-674) that has VMF-214 and -332, plus VF-193, all Korean vintage.  Don't know where you could find one, but you might get lucky.

Good luck

Since it is a Reverse Polish Wing ( a little joke on my own referring to Reverse Polish Notation in computing Smile [:)]) I would like to join you gentlemen with some 1/48 kit possibly Tamiya.

I would love to use markings for some Polish related pilots. Any information on *SKI piloting those birds are very welcome (You know me by now Wink [;)]

Bummer about the free gun barrels, but oh well.  And, bummer about the CBR!  I was out on my 919 last night, great to be on two wheels again! Big Smile [:D]

I can't remember...has anyone posted up a couple of 'generic' Corsair cockpit photos?

Scott - I was also very surprised at the quality of the 21st Century kits...did the Macchi 202 - had to go wheels up due to a pretty messy landing gear setup, but the rest of it was awesome!

Heyyyy guys! Glad to see a GB of one of my faves. I have a couple in my stash, both 1/72. An Italeri F4U-4 and a Revell F4U-5. I am currently working on a 1/72 airfix/revell swordfish so prolly won't be able to get in on the GB. If I do think I might be able will let you know. I have a question that I think might be answered here in this forum.

Is there ANY 1/72 decals for VMF-214 during the Korean conflict??????? I have been searching but haven't had any luck.

Great thread !!!!

Cheers

Here you go Chris

This first shot is a really cool one from an F4U-5 and the only difference between it and the dash 5N is the inclusion of a radar scope in the middle of the console.  Note the colours.

Here's a couple of shots of a dash 5N showing the IP with radar scope and the black consoles.

Scott, you got METAL legs from AIRES?I`ve never seen them listed anywhere. I got my wheelwell set from Aires today. But SPRUE messed up. Instead of sending my 1/32 engine from Quickboost, they sent some BF109 gun barrels. The # are close but the shipping slip on email even had the engine listed. So I emailed them a little while ago. We`ll see what happens. Looks like a few of us have finnaly gotten buissy. Glad to see it.   Frank, I`ll be sure to let you know how I like Jerry`s stuff. I talked to him on the phone the other day. Hella nice guy. It will probebly be a couple of weeks till I get his stuff. He makes as he gets orders. One man show. Well, see you all latter..............Harv

Darson, Thanks for the kind words and the offer.  I'd love to see those pics.  The whole pit is aftermarket.  In fact, it's my first resin pit.  It's the True Details pit with Eduard PE.  I splurged on this one, and I'm glad I did.

Scott great looking work on what must me a couple of huge kits.  Any chance of posing a 1/48 kit next to one of those birds to get a size comparison.

Fred likewise an excellent start on your Corsair, there sure are going to be some quality builds coming out of this GB.

Fred,  It's extra work like that which makes some models pop out of a crowd.  Great work.

The F4U-5N's pit is nearing completion.  I had some trouble finding good reference pics, so I went ahead and made some educated guesses about colors.  Let me know if I made the wrong guesses.

Semper Fi,

Chris I have some good reference pics of the F4U-5n cockpit at home, I'll scan them and post them tonight after I put the kids to bed.

About the only thing that springs to mind from the pit supplied by Hase compared to the real deal is that there are two boxes with switches on them that sit either side of the gun sight.  This won't affect the work you've done so far though as they would attach to the fuselage not the cockpit tub.

Awesome work on the front office by the way it looks great.  Also, how much of the cockpit is AM and how much is OOB?

Cheers

Well, I'm off and running and now at the point I love the least.  Filling and sanding.  However, this kit was nothing like that old Revell kit I built a few years ago.  The 21st Century kit is molded and engineered well and the quality of the plastic is fabulous.  Nothing that I expected for a 1/32 kit that cost $9.  I paid more for shipping on the landing gear.  The second pic is of both models side by side.  I am rebuilding the Revell F4U after the cat took it for a joyride last fall.  Thank goodness for those aftermarket landing gear kits.  The Revell kit's were really too soft and needed wire re-enforcement to keep them from snapping when I mounted the model to a base.

Got my AIRES landing gear today for this 21st Century kit and they will fit quite well.  Look at the difference compared to the ones that came with the kit.  Then again, this kit was designed for a 9 yr old to take on missions around the house straffing and bombing the cat.

Daywalker,

I have one Corsair going, but thaqt is for the classic build, that and a partially workins P-40E.

I have the "Jaunty Joe" for the med. bombers build.

I just have to get those done first. and inbetween those I'm putzing with a Spit, Do-335, and a P-47.

So it's high time that dave starts to finish some, before moving onto another, and seeing as how that are 12 months on this build, and I am 90% done with Pappys bird, in paint with the P-40, and about 40-50% done w/Jaunty, I should be okay.

(BTW, anyone know about this kit...I really want a b-24.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290222839723&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019

thanks.)

(and I just got the Hase 1/32 P-47D for $48, [price + shipping], off e-bay...that looks niiiiice!)

Fred - thanks for the instructions... I like this type of "AM"; self created and crafty. Was worth it for sure... I will try that on the Revell PT boat I have been building of/off for months. I am trying to use "home made" type of enhancements instead of buying PE, to learn the "Craft". Thanks again! Cheers!

piperjoe- I agree, that is the best looking one of the Corsair they have.  I have seen another one that is similar, but not quite as good.

dirtball- I am anxious to hear how you like that Rutman stuff, I have considered a few of his items but don't know much about it.

hartmann352- I hear ya!  I have a bunch of irons in the fire, the Corsair among them.  Hope you can start on one soon!

gigatron- Nice work there!  Looks like time well spent to me. Thumbs Up [tup]

ridleusmc- Great looking office you have there! Big Smile [:D]

Thanks, guys Big Smile [:D]

The ammo was surpisingly easy to make, once I figured out exactly what I was doing.

The first thing I did was cut a length of styrene that was wide enough to fit within those "trays" in the PE bay.  Then I just cut it into 3 roughly equal lengths (though purposefully different).  Then I started cutting up little bits of .032 solder (wider than the styrene) to act as the bullets.  I used some crazy glue gel (put down some glue, add some bullets, put down glue, add more bullets, etc.) and worked my way across until I had filled the styrene strip.

Then I used my sprue cutter to trim the solder back so it was flush with the styrene on both sides.  Then I used some tamiya clear orange (directly over the solder) to give it that copper look on the bullet side and some testors gold to make the casings on the other.  Then I used a small strip of lead foil to act as the links.  I glued it down using some more crazy glue.  Once it was dry, I used the back side of my exacto blade to dent the foil between each bullet and then painted that flat black.

Took about an hour and a half to do all 3 links.  A lot of work, comparatively speaking, but I think it was worth it.  I may leave the ammo chutes off as my guns don't really line up all that well and the chutes would really exaggerate that point.

dirtball - yes, my own book show them mostly "smoothed" over, or blurry, or maybe too small for scale? Or maybe they are smooth to begin with?? Confused [%-)]

piperjoe - glad to hear you are in business!

Fred - impressive! The "whole nine yards"? ;)  Quick question, how you made the "indentations" of individual bullets within the band?

Chris - Very nice pit! Colors look fine to me, but I am very far from an expert... love your "grip" tool, will have to look it up next time I go to Home depot :)

cheers all.

... thanks for the link!

Thanks Harv, I'm glad you like.  I should mention that it's a True Details resin tub with some Eduard PE.

Have at it, Dave.

I've been scratchbuilding parts FOR my PE set - what a world.  I pay money to have someone else do the work (in this case, Verlinden) and I still end up improving their stuff.

I've spent the last few hours making scale ammunition out of styene, .032 solder, lead foil and paint.

Here's how it all turned out:

Don't worry, in real life, it looks much better Laugh [(-D]

Enjoy,

Fred

Fortulantely I have a wee bit-o'time to do this.

Oh & Gig, I might have to ammend the "no AM parts" I found a PE cockpit set I have for it....I might get really brave & dive into that part of this world.

Well I finished my ordering spree today. From Jerry Rutman, I ordered a prop and hub, and wheel update(tires) set. On a side note and off topic, I also ordered resin sets for the Trump P51c from him. A complete pit and also a wheelwell set that includes upper wing halfs with lamminar flow detail. Cant wait!! Doing a little work on the corsair pit today, we`ll see how it goes....Harv

Thanks, Frank!  What a neat site to visit and look through all the aircraft paintings/prints. I appreciate the link.  Some great Corsair images there.  I believe you selected the best one. Thumbs Up [tup]

Say, Daywalker, I've been admiring that Corsair landing on the AC in your signature for some time now...could you tell me where you got the pic and if that is an available print?  Thanks.

Thank you, I really liked it when I found it so I added it to my signature.  It is a print by Stan Stokes titled "Corsair of the Intrepid" available here.  Thanks! Thumbs Up [tup]
