The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

I think Sean deserves a special Unit Commendation for flying cover when I got flamed.  Threw me his liferaft, too.

I was thinking about using a Verlinden 1:48 WWII carrier-deck section as a diorama base.  If that happens I'll probably use the tug, Harv.  Have not decided on the wing display yet but would like to go with the port wing folded and the starboard wing extended (pilot's looking that way).  What do you think?  (If I don't go with a diorama I won't be using the tug...do you need it for your build Harv?)

Curious: Am using Photobucket; my picture displayed full size on the preview, but looks to be cut short on the right hand side on my post.  Any ideas why?  Also does Adobe PhotoShop work for posting pics?

Edit:  Hey!!  Just looked at my pic and saw the little "pointing finger" and left clicked once and the pic got BIG and I could see it all and that is cool and I didn't realize that you could do that and that is all.   Whew (don't take much to excite me does it?)!!

Joe , So Glad to see you have come Back to Share the Fun ! Wow, what a nice work area... That fan has got to be for wisking away the CA Fumes as I know your not in Arizona. There is a reason my pictures only show 10 sq inches of area - as that is all I have clear

Well, mourning time is over.  Found out on Good Friday, from a stranger, that both my father and grandfather had passed away some years ago.  Was an estranged family situation but still one heck of a shock for me.  Thanks to Sean, who didn't give up on me and offered his friendship during this extremely troubling time (and even tried bribing me with those cookies ), I got through it.  Modelers are a special breed are they not?

Somewhere in this photo is a Corsair F4U-1D!!! Can you find it? Box is opened, paint list made and I even opened one of the plastic bags to get at the "pit".  Going to wash the parts today and start the build.  It will be good therapy and maybe I can get Sean to actually SEND those cookies He has been eating!

got my mr. surfacer from missionmodels last night.  it was about 3 days total, from order to delivery.  I dabbed some along the seams, so now it'll be a few days till I get around to sanding.  I hope this stuff works...

Thanks, glad I am not the only one!  I was able to find some thin wire, and thanks piperjoe for the tip on the fly fishing section of a sporting goods store.

darson & ridleusmc - Really looking forward to your "black" birds... Speaking of which Chris, there was a build of an SR some months ago, the author explained how he "weathered" the black fuselage. Cant remember exact details, but he used various "shades" of Black (Flat Blk, NATO black, semi-gloss black). And darsonn, thanks for that link! Great build...

Daywalker - I hear you about losing parts in the ABSENCE of a carpet.... maybe I can blame the bare basement floor monster?  I like the improved crankcase! Source of thin copper wire? Old small appliances, I also got couple "rolls" from a company called SIG, no clue where I bought it... and thanks for that link!

Summit - Good luck with that PE! I will also break my PE...er...whatever :) this year, but not this build... Pass the oreos in the meantime ;) nice pit and IP! good tips too...

Gigatron - nice pit! I got my jar of Mr Surfacer 500 from Lucky Models.. they will airmail you the stuff (which in theory, they should not!). Reasonable prices, even with shipping. Seems that CONUS web retailers got some in stock finally!

I went and installed the Gauges using the PE Film. Using a reference I colored the back of the film gauge with magic markers for the yellow and red. Attached the film to the panel which I had already painted Gloss White with some dabs of Future. Once this cures I will touch up a few spots, file off the left side protrusion of plastic . Then physce myself up for the pedals. Then add the Gun Charging knobs..

Back to the Pit today as I could not find a sutible source to rob any fine wire for Spark Plug wires......   Painted the panels and circit breakers along with finishing the lap belt. Now to start picking out the details and scratching it up some. Sure hope to see some  Office work soon as I could use some ideas.

Sean, don't be too hard on yourself, that's a mighty fine lookin' wasp.  Just need to get some ignition wires on there

I've built so may of these things, it's not even funny.  Adding the ignition wires is the worst part, especially if you have to use something like solder to make them.  You need a quick set CA so you can attach one end to the ignition ring.  Then you have to hope it doesn't pull off while you're wiring the other end.  Once you've glued down both ends, I usually go back to the ring and add a drop of gel CA for a stronger bond.

Thanks Harv good thing I am not good at taking pictures , I am glad you think that it looks good. This engine has been a real pain to me. It already has had a "Simple Green" bath as I attempted to brush paint the pipes and they looked  like   Wires ? you got to be kidding me.....  I went into this project Blind on most information, but the funny thing is as soon as I near completed a step I found something usefull the next day for reference.... If I was to build another which I usually do, It will be wired as now I have a better idea of this radial engine. Although I might wire the front cylinders - might .....

Finally!!!  The mailman just delivered my Tamiya "birdcage" Corsair.  Must have stared at it for an hour.  It's enough to make a grown man cry!  Now I'm officially off and running!!

Harv, that engine looks like the one's in those old Hawk Kits I like to build.... I say go with the resin, it is pretty nice .

Fred you did a real nice job on your engines. next time need one built I will send mine to you with a bribe.

Ok, Freds engines are a Tough Act to Follow but here is a peak at mine. .

Harv, ditch the POS revell engine and look around for an amftermarket resin kit.  If you need a 1/32 Wasp, get a Contact Resine kit  http://design-marketingintl.com/product_info.php?products_id=265

I used one for my 1/32 HellCat.  Builds up to a really nice powerplant

if you need 1/48, get an Aires
