Ok, I will pass this little tip on to those of you building the Trumpeter 1/32 . As you have found the engine is pretty complex ~like about 94 parts. The "rocker boxes" take up 54 seperate pieces. After trying to hold and assemble one that was enough. By the way I am assembling my engine halves with rockers on and then will paint. Unlike the instructions show for the last step.

Step 1 ~ After making a rocker I decided to make a jig. So I found a piece of scrap Basla and pressed the rocker down to leave an indention.J~3 Step 2 ~ I then removed the rocker and cut out the indented area.(outlined by an ink pen for photo)

J~1 Step 3 ~ I then had a saddle to place two rockers in J~2Step 4 ~ Glue the oil tube on and your ready for the next,J~3 This really works out great as when you go to attach these to the top of the cylinders the oil tube will need to be slightly bowed upward. So having these pre glued and set takes the Headache out of the project.

It didn't really matter what number I modeled because from what I understand they all used planes that were available and working.  They didn't have an assigned plane.  I'm not a fan of the red outlined insignia...i love the earlier first tour markings.  I really want to pull off a sun-bleached weathered aircraft.

Mark, the Black Sheep squadron does not have that complex of insigna. Find yourself a "star & bar" decal or paint your own using friskit paper Thumbs Up [tup] and you can get your # by using DryErase stencils sold at art supply  and Craft stores. Which aircraft are you wanting to build #68 ?

Still going back and forth what I want to model for this build.  I'm interested in modeling a "Black Sheep Squadron" corsair but LOVE the "birdcage" F4u-1.  I know Black Sheep used these but can't seem to find any decals.  Any help?

Semper Fi,

Chris, I would try using light gray or white pastels to get that oxidized look. Nice thing about pastels ~ If you do not like how it looks clean up is really easy.

Hi all,

I have the same squadron in Superscale, in 1:72 and 1:48 -- sounds like there are going to be a few all black birds built this year. I've been toying with the idea of a modern-day show restoration-style depiction, in high-gloss black... It would have the virtue of being unusual, at least!

Ok, boys - the day is finally here, so get to work.

And as luck would have it, I'm in the middle of working on a Bearcat since I discovered a new NMF application.  Hopefully, I can get started on my corsair by the weekend.  My girl is working this weekend, so I'll have plenty of time to build Wink [;)]

Guys, the black bird looks killer, but be careful with a true flat black basecoat.  It takes a lot of weathering to make it look right.  I suggest trying some Floquil Tarnished Black.  It's a very dark grey - like a sunbleached black.  You can see it on my P-61

It looks black, not so dark that it hides all the detail.  Just something to consider.

Chris I found this feature on Hyperscale and I really like the way the modeler has finished his Corsair so I was thinking to try and get the same type of finish on mine.  Have a read and let me know what you think.

Frank, love the front office, I hope your next one turns out just as nice.

Ken apologies but I didn't make mention of that very nice dash 1D she looks sweet, I'll be looking forward to see what you put in for this build.

Cheers

I just picked up that same decal sheet last week too. Blush [:I]  That black one sure looks mean!

Here are the pics of the cockpit and prop I'll be using, from a failed attempt last year.  Looking forward to building another Corsair! Big Smile [:D]

I have the same decal sheet, so I guess we'll be building the same aircraft.  I don't mind.  The sight of an all black Corsair is cool.  Do you have any idea on how to weather a flat black aircraft?  I like to preshade, but that might not suit this all black bird.  I guess I could use black and a very dark grey.  Any ideas?

I tell you guys there is nothing better (well almost nothing) than coming home from work and finding the postman has left me a nice little parcel Big Smile [:D].

Here is the Eagle Strike decal sheet I'll be using for this build.  Ridleusmc (Chris) I pretty sure I'm going to settle on the black Marine Corps bird as I reckon that will look cooool.

Cheers

Thanks for including me. Here are some photos of a Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1D I built OOB a few months before discussion started about this GB. There is nothing else that looks like a Corsair!

I think the corsair hits home more because of the TV show 'Black Sheep Squadron." We can all relate to it sitting down with our family to watch it. It reminded us of the principle roll they had in winning the Pacific campaign.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] This is gonna be a fun one, I can feel it!

Fred- Do we get to start tomorrow, as it will be April 1st somewhere in the world? Whistling [:-^]

And to think, I started this thing on a whim.  I had one to build and I was kinda half-joking when I suggested a GB.  I figured most people had already built a few corsairs in their time and at best, I'd get maybe 3 people interested in a build.  But, here we are, with 34 members signed up and still two before we even begin.

Its funny you should mension it Sean. Just last night after getting of swing shift, sat down, had a beer and started just browsing through the different GB listed. And I thought the same thing at the time. Some of the GB`s that have been going on awhile , indeed have fewer pages than we have, and we have 2 more (looonnnggg) days till we even start. Lots of great info sofar.........Harv
