Karl, the hurricane is loking mighty fine my friend. Very nice camo job and it looks smooth. Nice job.

Thanks for the prop photos, the center one looks the closest to the condors. It has a large hub like yours. I will check the mesurements on mine and see how they match up.Thanks a lot.

Steve -- the 200 is looking impressive!!! I know the pain of supplies running out -- I ran my gas bottle to zero not long ago, the last bar of pressure being -- gulp -- gauge error. I thought I had enough compressed air to slap a quick coat of dark yellow on a Tiger... I did, just not enough to clean the AB afterward. I was using acrylics, so I stood the AB in a glass of water overnight, changed the bottle the next morning and finally cleaned the brush. She's not been quite right since, I've had all sorts of problems, bent trigger assembly, minutely bent needle tip, spattering. I know my AB technician by his first name.

Okay, guys, what's the story on the 109's leading edge slats? My main reference is the Janes/Zokeisha book from 1980, and if I'm reading it right the slats date right back to the 108 sportster. The kit says to match the slats with the flaps for a deployed config, as if they extended together, but the book has a photo of 109Ds on an airfield in summer 39, all with their flaps down yet none with slats open. There's a shot of a taxying G-6, with what seem to be dropped flaps but closed slats. Maybe I'm not reading the pics right, and need more reference materials. Any advice from the 109 experts would be appreciated!

Might pick up the 65 and 71 today, I'm enjoying a kit that actually wants to be built!

Cheers,

Mike

ADDENDUM

Just got back from town, it turns out I already had some 65, and 02 as well but that's a color you can never have too much of. The 71 was out of stock, so there's another place I can try. No wire as fine as .010" for rigging antennas -- will try for piano wire.

I got some Gunze flatcoat, and learned of a rumour that a local hardware store chain may have brought in some Future -- will check it out in the near future (okay, slap me...)

Looking good there Stan! Isn't that camo a major pain! Are you going to borrow the detail parts from the Hasagawa like we talked about. I finishing up on the CA kit then onto the Airfix kit that is all ready for paint. I am deninetly giong to raid one of my Hasegawa Hurricane's for all of the detail parts. The Airfix details are very heavy and crude.

Steve, nice progress on the Kondor.

She is one big bird compared to the Emil!

Here's a pic of the props I have in my spares box, the squares on the cutting matt are at 5mm intervals.

Let me know if any of them look suitable.

Finally looks like the end is in sight on the Hurricane, with the camo on..

The slight speckling on the paintwork, is a light coat of dilute Tamiya Buff, as the contract between the brown and the green was too stark, and this knocks it back a little. The speckling disappears under a coat of Future.

Paints are a combination of Tamiya and Gunze acrylics. I post shaded all the panels with various shades of brown and green.

No worries Aaron thoses Hurricane's lost were not my boys! The CA fabric wing Hurricane is from the 56th squadron 11 group Rockford, Kent and the Hasegawa Hurricane is from the 229 squadron Northolt. When the Airfix kit is done she will be done in marking from the 306 Polish squadron. So you see no reason to worry! All my boys are accounted for!

Mike, I know how you feel slaving away on an old kit. I love the old Matchbox/Airfix stuff but they do put up a good fight. I have 5 Tamiya Emils in my stash and I have never built a Tamiya kit yet!!!. After all the flash, fit ssues and miss molded parts I think my next kit is going to be a Tamigawa.

He Bondo, keep building the tower. I would like to see it built. I am going to do a diorama with mine some day. Besides, how could you tell when exactly when a building was built. Slap a 1/72 hurricane or spit with it and there ya go.

Kj, cant wait to see how it's looking these days, sounds loke you are making good progress.

On my front we are finally moving along. Both have the undersides painted and yesterday got the yellow down. Bad news was that my RLM04 was dried up and I thinned it and used it. Got the paint down but you got it, it clogged my AB. Spent hours breaking it down and cleaning it over and over but ran out of thinner. Went to the LHS but they are closed and empty, but good news was that they have moved to a bigger new location. It's good to see a hobby shop getting better and hopefully carry more aircraft stuff.

Here is where I am. The 109 is mummified and ready to go to the 02 and 71. The 200 will have some 65 touchups and then also on to the topside.

While we are posting photos, here is a build I did a long time ago that relates to the BOB. This is a Hurricane that was chasing bombers over the Irish sea and ran out of fuel so he crash landed in Ireland. The Hurricane was repared and conficated by the Irish Air Corps and the pilot was repatriated back to England. Thought it was an interesting BOB story.

Thanks for looking.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know the Emil is under way! After what seems a long time fiddling with older kits (the Matchbox Dornier, an early Trumpeter for the seaplanes GB, a 1964 Testor/Hawk for an SF scratchbuild, and contemplating an MPM for the Flights of Fantasy GB, not to mention having throughts of finishing an Ertl armor kit, I decided I wanted a model that simply wouldn't fight me... I assembled the wing, the flaps, and did some preliminary painting and liquid masking. I'll spray most of the parts on the sprue, pick up RLM 65 and 71 this week, and the weathering fluid should be here in time for this build.

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

It does indeed inhale to be the guy facing backward, whomself was the radio/radar op, gunner, crew chief in a two seat, and overall dropkick.

I pause every day to pray, really I do, for those who die in combat. It's often a poopy deal, like the gunner in the Stuka, but its a team bond till death since maybe, when David won.

In the spirit of full disclosure, our Airfix control tower is the 1941 model, so we won't be allowed to be an entry. We will finish tho because it's interesting to us and hopefully to you.

I should have added some info with them but I just kinda like the feel they give you when you look at them. The Stuka Pilot in the Above pics was killed. The Aircraft dived  straight into the ground with the Helpless gunner carried along for the ride. Just like in the movie. Sux to be him.

Aaron, great pics.

Sean, some of the 'Usual Suspects' are still around!

Steve, all the props I have, have separate spinners, I'll post some pics tomorrow.

The Hurricane has recieved a coat of Tamiya Sky to the underside, and a coat of Tamiya Dark Earth to the upper surfaces.

Should get the dark green on tomorrow, after which I'll post some pics.

Hey Sean, good to hear from you again.  Yea, some of usual suspects are no longer around but there are still quite a few names you might recognize.  By all means jump in and join us.

Aaron, some great pictures you have there.  Keep them coming.

Well it's been well over a year since I logged onto this site, and at least that since I touched a plastic kit (work, kids, RC stuff) but thankfully the BoB GB is still around...minus the 'Usual Suspects'.

Some very nice models going together here, might just get me back into the right frame of mind.

Really miss weathering a 109.

Might have to blow the dust of the ol' IwataWink [;)]

Aaron, Steve, SC -- I'd like to add my tip of the hat to acknowledge the terrific folk here, for the very same reason -- Luftwaffle sent me the KG3 squadron codes and badges for my Dornier which is taking shape slowly at this time.

Speaking of which, I have an order in play with LuckyModel for that Promodeller panel wash and some Testor Clear Parts cement, both of which should see plenty of action on the Do 17, the Bf 109, and the Antonov floatplane I just elected to build for the seaplanes GB.

Cheers,

Mike

Aaron, thats a great set of photos and thanks for posting them. Some really cool looking pics there and quite a few that I have never seen before. I will be sending out the prop on Tue in the mean time I will post a photo of the prop to see if anyone has a match for it before tue.

Thanks again to all for the help, you guys are truly the best and really show what this hobby and this forum is all about.

Well fellows, time to contribute more than my natural charm and good looks.  I Loaded up my collection of reference pics for this GB. I have a collection of 35 photos that are some of the fewer seen. Watching the movie is great but these photo's from both sides really gave me a feel for what was happening August of  68 years ago.

Some are not the best quality but still you can see enough to understand what was being seen. To me they just speak for themselves.

I'll post more later so as not to bog down the site. One last one for Soul Crusher! This kinda reminded me of your build. (joking)

To the best of my knowledge these are all from August 1940. I have some good ones of the only cannon armed Hurricane that was there and some of the elusive Stuka's

Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup] Even Soul Crusher is getting it done now that he knows Hydrochloric acid makes for a poor clear coat! Laugh [(-D]  Wow I am going to jump on the band wagon and do that Pegasus Hurricane! I am guessing the Hobby Craft and Monogram kits are the wrong version. Really a great representation of that type!

Steve, I've got a choice of at least 3 or 4 props, all Revell, post a pic and I'll see if any match.

SC, this Airfix kit is a definite pot boiler, I'll just be glad to complete mine, and wlak away from it.

Nice gesture there Aaron. It is people like you that make this forum such a great place. Thumbs Up [tup]. This type of generousity makes our hobby much more enjoyable. i myself have been the recipient of this generiousity from John, jeaton1 when i needed a rare set of decals for a 1/48 Lockheed Model 14. I would never have been able to finish it without his help. to everyone here that has helped a fellow modeler out with a spare part or decal.Make a Toast [#toast]!

Sorry I have not been around much.  My house has been turned upside down by recent renovation work and I have lost my modeling bench temporarily.  Hopefully I'll be back up and running soon.

Hi Steve,

Pity Revell are dragging their feet, I've usually had good service where replacement parts are concerned, just recently I got a part from Testors in no time, and I got a replacement for a broken prop on the Ar 196 from Airfix a few years ago. You could drop them a line, open an email dialog -- chances are the business has been lost in the system, not ignored. Don't give up!

But if you need to fabricate a replacement, you can. It'll take work, but it can be done. I've used Alumilite for about three years and it's good stuff. It's neither magic nor rocket science, and there are many ways for the job to go wrong, so be prepared for plenty of reject parts.

You'd need to sacrifice one of the props as a pattern. My impression is you'd need to cast the spinner and the blades seperately, allowing for one-part molds, a LOT easier than a two-part mold -- though you could cast the prop in one go in a two-parter (base of the blades would be very fragile, it might not be worth the effort if they snapped straight away). Air bubbles are the biggest problem in home molding, as it's not usually possible to afford a vacuum chamber to de-gas the resin (nor does Alumilite's three-minute pot-life really give you time to).

The ins and outs of casting are detailed on Alumilite's website and they always include plenty of technique paperwork with their products, there's a how-to booklet that's always lots of help. Give it some thought -- if you need to enter the world of casting, it's a great skill that'll serve you in future. I use it for repetitive structures in SF scratchbuilding and it makes possible many projects which would otherwise be non-starters.

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Thanks everyone for the great comments.

Karl I know what you mean about the canopy fit on that Airfix kit. Mine want to sit sideways in the opening. i had to spendal ot of time filling the opening to get it to sit right.

Aaron i will have my trio of Hurri's ready for Adler Tag!

No Problem at all Steve! I am here for ya! I looked in my spares as well and tried to compare them to your photos. My 1/72 AC stuff is pretty limited as I do mostly 1/48. Those hubs look pretty unique for some reason. Confused [%-)] If you need me to do that just holler!

Thanks for the advise guy's. I did think if I could find the stuff I would attempt to make one but that is a whole new world to me. I may take you up on the offer to mail you one of the kits props if you would not mind doing that.

How close does your prop look like the ones I have KJ. I will take a close up photo and post it to make a comparison.

Which ever way is easiest. Thanks a lot for the offers, I will let ya know soon.
