I would have to agree with you Frank on the neatness of the paint jobs especially when it came to personal markings. How perfect of a spiral could a mechanic in the field with a paint brush in hand have painted. i noticed in alot of the more clear pictures of spinners that are painted in sections that they look like the are just freehand sprayed with soft edges and not perfectly straight. Most close up photos i have been able to find of any country's front line planes show alot of sloppy paint work badly worn paint and oil stains everywhere. I would have to think neatness does not count for much when someone is shooting at you, just how good she runs and shoots!

Thank you kindly fellas!

Aaron- Great new word there! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  Actually, this is a one-off Bf-109E floatplane.  The long gear are actually struts to the large main float to give the prop clearance. Whistling [:-^]

Darren- That's what I have read about that '110.  Too bad they apparently over-engineered it in the name of more detail.

Guy- Thanks, love the new adjective, how the heck do you pronounce it? Confused [%-)]  On the spinner, I first painted it black then masked and did the white (yep, you read that right!) figuring that's how it was done in real life.  I used a sheet of paper held just off the surface to get a fine feathered edge.  The red is hand-painted, and didn't turn out quite as well as I had hoped.  But, since I had already stripped and redone it several times, I went with it.  Figured the guys in the field didn't get it perfect either, right?  Well, that's what I tell myself to feel better about it. Big Smile [:D]

Well I hate to brag, but I'm actually the smart, good looking one, Mom always loved me best! Dunce [D)]

TB- I can give you the the unit emblems and fuselage codes from a 1/72 Superscale sheet for the Do 17Z.  It's a machine from Stab./KG 3.  I've already used up the crosses and other markings so you'd have to source those yourself.  You can PM at mikeoffutt@yahoo.com if you'd like them.

Doh, Banged Head [banghead] read the above post. Its Luftwaffle that said he had the decals LOL. Im Luftwoller. Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. Id be more than happy to order them for you through Hannants but it might work out a bit pricey. The decals were £4.99 ish? = $10 + postage to the states, gotta be another $10? If you get no joy from LUFTWAFFLE, ill make inquiries.

Hi Luftwoller,

That's an excellent selection! Most of the sheet is 1940 so I should be able to do a dedicated BoB particpant.

You have this sheet, with some subjects used, right? Can we trade? What would you like in return? Name it!

TB379- If you decide to a 1/72 Do 17Z I may be able to help with some decals, I don't see myself building another BoB Dornier in the forseeable future.  Let me know.

It was our Illustrious collegue 'Luftwaffle' with the decals. Ill check Hannants for you here in the uk to see if they have something suitable.

Frank, that 109 just looks fantabulagoriculacious. I had to make up a new superlative as 'Ace' or 'Great' just doesnt cut it. The spinner is just sublime. How did you mask that so sweetly? I cant wait to see this one finished. I even like the wooden U/C. Whistling [:-^]

Darson -- I know what you mean about the race outstaying its welcome. The Clipsal 500 has done the same here... A race in May leaves its mark on the city from April to June with monotonous regularity, and the simple fact is the majority of the audience is there for the four-day rock concert, not the two hour race. All symptomatic of consumer society out of control if you ask me...

Daywalker -- NICE job on the 109! I especially like the subtle mottle on the fuselage. I'd love an AB that'll do that at the scale. I picked up some light machine oil today, the tech at the shop told me what to do and said I should have a go at it myself, it'll cost $50 if he does the job. So, nothing feared, I'll have a go tomorrow... The worst that can happen is I'll have to take it in if I can't get it back together.

Bondo -- actually you're not that far out of the ordinary with a female lending a hand. I have a special lady friend who says she's really looking forward to watching me build something, maybe even learning how herself. She used to watch her dad build long ago and is delighted to have found a modeller!

Lufty -- any info on those Do 17Z decals you mentioned? I can get an order off for accessories in the near future if the project is a Go.

My Tamiya 109 should be winging its way from Hong Kong by now, I'm looking forward to a no-hassles swift-build (that'll counterbalance the MPM Mistel IV I'm con sidering for the Fanciful Fylers, a short-run injection kit with thick parts, flash everywhere, raised panel lines, vacform clear parts that have yellowed with age, no locator pegs whatever. I must be crazy, I could be knocking out a Tiran 4 for IDF... And if GMW take much longer to get the Merk PE set to me I must just do that!)

Cheers all,

TB379

Bondo I'll be looking forward to checking out some photos as that control tower comes together.  Also, how on earth did you convince a 17 year old (and a woman no less) to help you model?  My two would rather go and clean their rooms than help dear old dad with his planes and tanks Sigh [sigh]

Frank mate my impressions are in a word, over engineered.  Ok that's two words but you know what I mean.  Where a part could be simply moulded with one part Eduard has used three or four.  This makes for some lovely detail OOB but it also makes for a lot of very small styrene parts which have to cleaned and glued, some of which are no more than a couple of mm long.  Having a look at my Eduard F6F-3 this problem has been addressed and the kit is a much more straight forward build.

Also, your 109 is looking fantastic!!

Steve good luck with getting that new prop and wing and I'll look forward to some photos.

Cheers

I ordered them from Hannants- they are made by Flightpath.

The cheaper one at L10 has all the doors and windows, plus new railing stanchions and ladders, and frankly is the more useful. The more expensive one at L17 has all the furniture, a mast, bike racks, met box, etc  mostly PE but also some soft metal. Alas, no soft metal Susannah York...

Guy-  Looking good.  I've got some 8000 and 12000 grit sandpaper that I use to smooth out rough spots works well if you're careful to not get carried away.

Frank- That Emil is going to be a beaut!

Darren- Glad to see some in progress photos.  I never doubted that you were actually working on it but some of the other guys were expressing concerns... Big Smile [:D]

Guy, very nice progress on the 111. It wont be long now.

Frank, the 109 is superb and I like its markings, very unique.

Darren, I have heard about all the detail in the cockpit and your looks very nice and yet more detail to come, wow. Cant wait to see it all put in there.

On my front, the FW-200 has begun but nothing worthy of a photo yet. I have sent away to Revell for a new prop and while I was at it a new wing for my 115. Hope they have them. All the crew are painted up as well as the interior, wheel wells and flaps and gun positions. There is not too much to this kit as far as detail goes and I scratch built a platform for the big open dorsal  position as you can see through the whole fuselage. I will try to get a figure for that position to make it interesting. The kit itself has big attachment points and loads of flash everywhere so that is my next task. The fuselage will be joined soon so photos will soon follow.

All around great models- a real GB! I've added amember to my team, my 17 year old daughter who is helping me build the Control Tower 1/72 by Airfix with lots and lots of PE. We start bending metal this week!

Darren, good to hear from you, our fearless leader!

Guy, nice job on the Heinkel.

I'll second Aaron's suggestion of a coat or two of Future, or Klear, here in the UK.

Frank, that 109 is looking sweet.

Have to love the dragon on the nose cowling.

Darren, it may seem like slow progress but there are more parts in the pit of your Eduard 110 than in the whole of my Airfix Hurricane!

Looking good.

Just need to apply the last of the decals to my He111 tonight.

A couple things Frank, Cool [8D] I think your landing gear is innaccurate. Looks like something outta the n\Knights of the Air GB. Also it seems you have forgotten to remove the canopy masking and the tail flats. I understand though with you being on vacation and all though.Whistling [:-^]

In reality of course you know that is looking mighty fine and I bet soulcrusher is dejected to see another fantastic 109 after that spectacularotious Spitfire! Bow [bow]

Guy that bomber is the bomb! I can't see much diff inte grain from the pics but have been told that a coat of future is more self leveling than your spray can gloss coat. May be worth a try or leave it as is as it looks fine to me but You is the judge. I saw the image was reversed too on the 111 picture but was afraid of what the prize might be. Alas poor Frank, I knew him well...Laugh [(-D]

Darren! Great pics! Been waiting to see them as I want to build that someday and nothing is better than using your expert work as a ref!Thumbs Up [tup] One question did you paint the newspaper girls eyes? Gosh I hope all the girls down under don't look like that! They look posscessed or something! Evil [}:)]

Looking good there Frank. I did one almost like many moons ago. Ilike the dragon emblem masked of on the yellow cowl. If I remember correctly it is the 2/JG3 used during the BoB.

I did some more work on the '109 last night, adding some of the bits like cowl panels, flaps, supercharger intake, etc.  I also finished up the spinner and prop.  Here's how she looks today:

Steve, Darren- Thanks fellas, glad you like! Approve [^]

Guy- WOOHOO!  DO I win anything? Tongue [:P]  The 111 is looking great, and I don't see the grainilocity in the photos. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Darren- Very nice work!  I am looking forward to hearing your impressions of that kit. Thumbs Up [tup]

OK then I thought I had better get the camera out and demonstrate that I am actually building this kit rather than just talking about it.

These photos were taken tonight following a wash or lamp Black and Raw Umber and the shine is due to the coat of Future I gave it yesterday to help the wash and to protect the paint.  Tomorrow nights tasks will be wiping off the excess wash and flat coating the whole thing followed by the start of detail painting and PE.

Thanks for looking

Im on lates this week so tha means if i get up early enough, ill be able to get a god few hours modelling in. Hence, todays update.

I found that the paint texture was alittle grainy so i thought id hit it with a load of coats of Tamiya Clear, hoping to smooth it out. Still seems a little grainy. Not sure what to do. I might try to flat it a touch after the clear has had a while to go off or i might just leave it as is. Anyhoos, youll be 1st to know LOL.

Spot on Frank, the image is reversed for some reason. All 111's were left hand drive. The nose bulge was for the guy on the right not the pilot. There are a few more pics of the Pedro's in that mag. If you like i might take a couple more pics. Theres also some of the Buchon's (Merlin engined 109's)

TB379 I didn't even know you were an Aussie let alone from Adelaide.  Well I'm from Melbourne and as far as I'm concerned if you guys want the Grand Prix back you are welcome to it.  I'm afraid the whole event has really worn out its welcome over here.

Frank as I said in the Spitfire GB, simply stunning Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow].

Guy hmmm, aside from the aerial on top of the 111 I'm stumped.

Frank great work with the black on your 111, the way you achieved that effect looks sensational.

Guy- Nice work on the undersides, I'm going to have to try that technique.  That must be a factory fresh 111 in the photo, never seen one that clean before.
