The weathering here is exquisite, small touches like the chipped varnish on the wooden seats add a lot. I think the "sarge" would have had the crew's dangly bits in a jam jar for letting the .50 cal get in that state but that is the only nit I can pick. I won't start begging you to tell how you get these effects (although I would love to do just that) but will try and figure it myself. Cheers and happy model building,

Now you got it.  In 1915, the Italians overcame entrenched Austrian forces holding the high ground near Passo Falzarego.  Heading west of Falzarego is some of the most spectacular alpine terrain in Europe.  Being a cyclist, I always wanted to ride a 45 mile loop called the selle ring that encircles the Selle massif.  It is comprised of 4 mountain passes; Passo Campolongo, Passo Gardena, Passo Sella and Passo Pordoi.  Time and life events prevented me from ever accomplishing the ride.  My username keeps the dream alive.

This weathering is simply on another level, I'm glad this one didn't entirely pass me by even if I'm a bit late to the table.

There's so many different weathering techniques on it that make up the unique finish, and it's the exact look I try to replicate.  All of the small details are just right, from IMO a nearly perfect green shade to the fantastic rust effects.

For me, it's just a moment in time Eric. I'm sure no vehicle went through the entire war much less went through it looking the same all that time; but, at some point a vehicle is surely going to have a bad day.

Besides, the weathering adds another dimension to modeling and adds to the fun. That's what it's about for me.

Thanks a lot Manstein.

The barbed wire in the tracks really is a nice touch! That is a beautiful model. I am with everyone else- you are just going to have to do a WIP and share some of that knowledge.

My hats off to you. You have encouraged me to try harder. What a nice job!!!!!

The fact that you turned your own barrel with aluminum tubing alone makes this one a stand-out. I'll echo the calls from the others to post a WIP/build log...would be great to share in the progress on these as well as the end result. Wink [;)]

Thank you Bill.
The barrel thing really wasn't that difficult. If you're careful, (although you may have to add some additional detail) you can do it with about any WW2 barrel. Weapons with a muzzle brake require that you use or cut off the kit supplied one and attach it to the end of the barrel. My next build will also feature a do-it-yourself barrel too.

I'm trying to work up something here. We'll see how it goes.

I've finally gotten to you with an answer. The screens?

    So, here for all.

Back in the mid sixties my dad worked in one of the larger machineworks around here. I found a sheet of this copper stuff in my mom's basement several months back. Well, apparently it's been there for a long long time.

If you think the kit was cheap; the screening was free. Most all of what I add is scratch. I might try some PE some day but I always try to "do my own homework" so to speak.

For what it's worth, I also liked the DG better. That plastic was very fragile. Anyway for $5 it was an acceptable trade-off.

Now........ back to my tank build.

Thank ya sir.....

That looks awesome!  I would second the desire for an overview on the rust process.

Hey, I'm planning a kitbash on this kit; how did lower hull and running gear build up?  The rest of the kit probably won't matter, since it will come from other kits and my own fabrications...

Thanks!

http://th277.photobucket.com/albums/kk62/truckintedybehr/Smileys/th_respect-055.gif And a big thanks to you also beav.

The suspension on this kit is tricky, the fact that the instructions are so vague doesn't help a thing. Be careful as two of the parts making up the front roadwheel arms are depicted backwards and it's easy to assemble them on the wrong side upside down. Be sure to get the shock absorber/springs whatever in the right position.

You'll have to glue the front return idlers in the furthermost position possible. Anything less will result in the tracks having gaps around the drive wheel and front return idler. You can't use the diagram depicting the track positioning. I had to switch the tracks around to get them to work.

I always form my tracks around the roadwheels. On this kit the front roadwheels have to be put on permanently first, (you'll see what I mean) but of course if you do that it makes it difficult to paint them. Inversely, if you don't glue them on first, then you have nothing to form the tracks around. Have fun as I can't give you an accurate blow by blow account as to how I did it. I'm sorry, it's just something you'll have to struggle with as I did. I'm sure you'll figure it out. You already know more about this kit than I did when I started this project.

OK, the rust...

It's simple really. Use a file or an e-xacto knife to "scritch" up the finish where the rust or wear pattern is going to go before ANY painting; of course this depends on how severe you want the rust or wear to appear. You can also use laquer thinner or liquid cement and a small brush to stipple the surface. These methods give texture for the rust and enhance the appearance.

This is too easy. After the final finish is acheived, a very thinned (aprx 80%) solution of burnt (aprx20%) sienna....spread it out in the pattern you want and let it dry thoroughly, it shouldn't be thick....lighter than a stain but heavier than a filter. I only use turpenoid. It'll look like crap, but be patient and let it dry. Next, do the same thing with lamp black in the center of the patches....spread it around in the pattern you want, let it dry. You can blend other rust colors to vary the effect making sure to let each layer dry completely. I'm sure some will think this won't work because it's just too simple. Once it's dullcoted it does just what you have seen. At least for me.

By the way, (not that I have a problem with it) there's no drybrushing involved in the finishing process on this project or in any of my previous builds; I can only imagine though that drybrushing would probably be a help.

Hope this answers your question beav and furthers you in the adventure.

Thank you Mr Treadwell,

Coming from such a respected forum prodigy as yourself, I am honored. Your 1/16 projects are spectacular and http://th88.photobucket.com/albums/k197/RedKnight_04/Smileys/th_hatsoff.gifmy hat's off to you in return. Glad you noticed the barbed wire. I thought it would be an original touch since I haven't seen anyone else do it. At this point in the thread I'm surprised that no one else had noticed or mentioned it.

Can't kill a friend. Your advice on the chain is duly noted and credited. I was going by the following photograph in which the chain looks reasonably larger.

Not to worry, the chain is just laid in place. Here's a previously taken picture with the 42 lpi chain.

hhmmmmm....... whaddaya think? Does it seem just a bit small?

And...... a bonus picture of BT hangin' out on my counter top with his battle hardened friend.... he's just lookin' around for a Panzer to pick on....or a smiley.

Oh, and I'm looking forward to your Trumpeter 1/16 Tiger II build. Yeah, I know it's coming.....can't fool me.

Hey redleg,
 I'm pleased that you're pleased.

Dust, rust? The dirt and dust are the lighter colored earth elements on the horizontal areas and under the sponsons, also on the headlights and on the wheel rims/tires. The rust is on the exhaust pipes, front fenders and the various nicks and scratches. The tracks and chain are a combination of both with metal contact points showing through on the tracks.

Good to hear from you and many tanks for your approval.

You know, it's always a stunning surprise to see your latest "disaster" but we could all learn so much from you if you would do a real, genuine WIP thread here. To see how you age your finish, and get your results would be a real plus for everyone; me included! You have so much talent, but it's really not possible to genuinely appreciate it without seeing you "In action"!

How about considering it for your next build????

Thank you for such an "over the top appraisal" doog, I'm really flattered.

I'm glad to be able to motivate the guys here to push a little harder to reach their full potential.
A WIP huh. The image “http://www.day.az/forum/style_emoticons/default/thinking.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. Well, that's certainly a winning invitation for sure. It's just a matter of finding the time. I got to work on my model less than 30 minutes yesterday. It already takes me 4-6 months to butt out a new one; documenting and photography might even double it.

Hey DM, That's the same poorman's lathe I use to turn 2 piece plastic barrels. Glue the 2 halves together, chuck it up and use sandpaper to smooth out the joint seams, a micro chisel to redefine the muzzle break seam if needed. Works great.

one word......superb

I was wondering if you've got any step by step processes of turning that barrel??

..........and that adjective is greatly appreciated Eoin. Thank you.

However I can't help you with one word, so......

As you know, it's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words or two or three.

Here's my poor mans lathe....battery powered at that. A corded drill is too fast. A simple project.

For this mini-project, get some tube aluminum like what you see in those plastic bags of assorted brass & aluminum tubing. Pick three pieces that will telescope together by measuring the kit part.

So, here I am at the kitchen sink........ this should take about 30 mins once you get everything together.

For the shorter tubes, pre-cut (if needed) to the general length and put a drill bit that fits accurately (sharp end toward  backwards  the drill) inside the tube you need to cut off and place it in the drill chuck. You don't have to tighten this 'till your teeth shatter either. This reinforces the tube from distorting and bending. Get your razor saw (that sucker will slice you) and place against the chuck (it's hardened steel) in place of the file as shown in the above picture. Crank up the drill, hold the saw carefully and cut it about a 1/16 longer than you need using the jaws of the drill as your saw support. You'll easily cut through the aluminum but not the hardened drill bit. Next, lay the file against the end of the cut right on the drill bit shaft and file it on down that last 1/16 or so as the drill spins.

For the muzzle, well the pic pretty much says it all. This will give you a uniform lip. All you have to do now is apply more pressure toward the end to get the taper. Stop occasionally and eyeball it to see how you're going. If the lip looks too thick, just use the file to wear it down a bit. Since it's telescoping you can adjust the length when you install it. While it's spinning in that drill, use some scotch brite or fine steel wool to polish/finish it up. I used liquid superglue to assemble the tubing and only had to press it into the mantlet with a tight finish . Make sure to take into account how far this completed unit will fit into the mantlet.

You can use this setup for simple barrels and save some money. Just think of all those Early Sherman and T34 aluminum barrels you can claim as your own.

Well, I hope this is clear. Thanks again!
Gotta go!

I only had about 20 minutes to work on my model yesterday.

WOW!! GREAT work!!!! the weathering is stunning.

How did you do the dust? and how did you make the wear on the front fenders?

GREAT WORK!!!!

Smile [:)]

Thank you stickman.... here you go.

That dirt comes from the dirt supplied with the rustall kit. Use a tiny dental tool with a small flat tip to allocate the dirt where you want it. You can brush off what you don't like. When you get it just the way you like it, use an eyedropper and place a drop of (I use turpenoid) turpenoid that leaches out and fixes it in place. Now, it won't blow off when you spray on the sealant coat. You do this towards the end of the build so as not to disturb it. Actually after you seal it in with dullcote, it is quite durable.
All wear work (dents/dings)is done before gluing the parts to the tank. The wear on the fenders is done the same way as with the fuel tanks by using various shaped files and x-acto blades. Pay meticulous attention to impact patterns.
The end result of this build is a combination of many, many techniques.

Thanks again. Hope this sends you on your way.

That looks awesome!  I would second the desire for an overview on the rust process.

Hey, I'm planning a kitbash on this kit; how did lower hull and running gear build up?  The rest of the kit probably won't matter, since it will come from other kits and my own fabrications...

Thanks!

A wonderful build!---I love the tangle of barbed wire thru the treads-excellent--never have seen that done before--your building AND photography are just going way off the charts---but-- and I hate myself for this -----the chain is in my humble opinion out of scale---kill me now---the model would be a perfect 10 if you went to maybe a 42 lpi chain---

yer pal and a BIG fan of your work ---treadCool [8D]

I love it. Absolutely brilliant. Ditto the previous question, how did you get the rust finish?

Cheers

Steve, I just don't know what to say--it's simply a hit "out of the park" as they say...a superb, masterful build and finish. Humbling!
