Mike- I dunno, maybe an Abrams GB next year?  That will allow me a little break before tackling the M1A1 with the mine plow.

Richie- You are WAY too kind!  After seeing the armor displayed at our local model show last month, I don't know if this one would be good enough to share the table with them.  Those guys are good!

Thanks for looking in everybody!  Hearing that you are enjoying the journey helps keep me pumped up about it.

After a little break while I wrapped up some other projects, I pulled this one back out to add the decals.  I was trying to decide whether to mask and paint the unit codes on the side skirts, but in the end opted for decals.  I did take the time to trim all of the carrier film from around them before applying them.  I used the Doog's technique he mentions in his Hetzer thread of tipping the bottle of micro-sol over onto a soft rag, then pressing it against the decal to help them snuggle down.  It worked very well, thanks Karl!

I was trying to decide how to add the three black stripes on the main barrel evacuator, either by using the decals supplied or masking and painting them.  Remembering how tricky it can be to add fuselage striped around an aircraft's tail, I opted for painting and masking.  First, I measured the width of the stripes from the decal sheet.  At 1.5mm, I took a straightedge and some Tamiya tape to cut a few strips 1.5mm wide.  I laid the first in the center, then butted up two more on either side.  By removing the 2nd and 4th strip, I was left with three perfectly spaced areas.  A little scale black matched as closely to the decals as I could, I sprayed them and voila!

A simple technique I use when painting the striped tail hooks on US Navy A/C, and invasion stripes on WWII Allied aircraft.

Daywalker,

This all looks great.  I'm only getting back into building models, and my next kit is the same M1A2.  Hope you don't mind, but I'm going to "plagarize" the heck out of your work in this thread.  Thanks for the great photos along the way.

Oh yeah, keep talking!  I'd be up for that. Toast

Thanks for stopping Darren, great to see you my friend!

Karl- Thank you very much for that, it means a lot to me!  I have been studying your Hetzer weathering toot quite a bit in the past week, trying to pick up a couple of the techniques.  The lighter color wash for a shaded affect, and the effects you have achieved with the base colors for the scratches on the side panels especially.  Thank you for taking the time to put that tutorial together!

RBaer- Thank you, glad to hear that you like it!  I hope I do not disappoint at the end.

Brian- I hear you, the look of the Abrams just says "tank" to me.  A most impressive beast to be sure!

Hey Frank, you got a fine beastie going here!  There is something about the Abrams that gets the monster in me a stirring!  Can't wait to see yours take on a life all it's own.

Just spent a good bit of time looking through this blog, and wanted to tell you what a fine job I think you're doing here with this kit. Nice work on all that tedious masking on the no-slip surface!

It's going to be a heck of a good-looking model, and a great reference thread!

Hey Frank, nice work on the M1! I like the subtle weathering on the side skirts where dirt has thrown up. Nicely done old chap.

Looking forward to seeing more. PirateToast

Ha! Small world! I found another of those early M1s second hand and convertted it to the IP M1, FSM bought the aticle from me over three years ago but I must have missed the issue, I've sure not seen it in print yet. I dressed it with stowage, did a tie-down antenna, modified the gun length vs the frontal armor, which was built up from styrene stock, and scrounged a bustle rack from a Trumpeter A1, then used dry transfers to do a training vehicle from Fort Knox in the mid-80s, in tri-tone soft-edge camo. That was one of my best ever tank builds.

I have the mine plow version too, I'm looking forward to doing that one. Heck, I find myself wondering if a year-long all-Abrams GB wouldn't be in order...

Dave- Thank you, much obliged!

Thanks Mike!  I appreciate that.  Trying to expand a little this year, with the Abrams and also a 1/32 modern jet on the bench.  Just painted a figure too, first in a long time! (Of course, he IS the pilot for the jet I am working on.)

Funny you mention the short-turret M1 as your first armor build, it was my first armor build too!  Still have it in the display case.  I also built Tamiya's M1A1, and just bought their M1A1 with the mine plow.  Actually put one of Dragon's M1A1 Panther kits in my shopping cart at an online store tonight.  Love those Abrams kits!

Crusher- AAACCCKKK!!!  You found me here too?  Oh, boy... looks like I better get back to that FW-190.

Well done, Frank! It's great to see your kind of talent moving in a larger circle (I mean, beyond the Luftwaffe!). The Abrams was my first armor build, Tamiya's early short-turret M1 (35124), back in the early '90s, a kit I still have the greatest fondness for. I have all the Tamiya Abrams kits except this one, and always look forward to building another. I have others by Dragon and Trumpeter, and one day I'll have a real lineup of them. Nice going all round!

Cheers, Mike/TB379

It's been a long time since I made any updates on this one, sorry for taking so long!  I took a break from this build for a while, until I could figure out a couple of things on it.  I added a couple of more details, like a tow cable draped across the nose, wiper blades for the drivers viewports, and a couple of other tidbits.  Masked off the running gear, and gave it a coat of paint too.  Not sure if you can see it in the photos, but I took an earth tone mixture and sprayed some around the bottom of the side panels and up the front and back of the chassis.  I'll do more when weathering commences.  I'll post some more pics soon, promise!

As always, comments and constructive criticism welcomed!

Phil- Thanks for the quick reply!  I had noticed the velcro strips, and remember seeing photos of M1's years ago with those MILES gear strips on them.  I am going to leave those CIP panels off then, thanks again for the assist. Approve [^]

Hi Frank,

My understanding is that the CIP's aren't currently fitted due to the very low probability of engagement with "hostile" tanks. It depends on the time period of the tank you're depicting.

The turret front CIP's are actually mounted using velcro on the corners (these are the dark corners on the "front" CIP's) and they can actually be pulled off and reversed to "turn off" (it's essentially passive) the CIP.

EDIT: You may also see pics which show vertical strips of velcro (or the remains of) near the "inner" edge of the front faces (near the mantlet), horizontal strips near the lower edge of the front faces and near the lower edge of the turret sides. These are for mounting the "hit sensors" for the MILES gear used in training.

I have a question regarding the CIP panels on the front of the turret.  Tamiya gives you a sheet of plastic to make them from, but after looking through dozens of photos I am not sure whther I should install them or not.  Most of the M1A2's I see photos do not have them, but two photos showed them.  They seem to appear mostly on the older M1A1's.  I am concerned that Tamiya just added them as a carry-over from their older boxing of the kit.  Can anyone help with this?

Haha, seeing some more modern armor would be nice... I guess I can't really talk though as my armor stash is 50-50 ww2 to modern... and I haven't 'finished' a modern in a while... haven't really finished anything Laugh [(-D]
