Mike- I tried the dark brown primer idea, but I think I would go with black the next time around.  The dark brown would be an excellent choice for a REALLY worn desert vehicle, as it lends a sense of rust and neglect to the model.  I ended up covering most of it up, which is fine as most of the Abrams' I have come across in photos are maintained quite well.  Not much for weathering at all. Thumbs Up [tup]

Ugh, I am sorry Frank that the dark brown primer did not turn out as I thought.... I really did not put a lot of thought into it but figured a dark colour would still bring out the tones.. Never really realising that a different look would be created.. lol Although, now you have discovered how to achieve a well worn look as you mentioned.. And yes I too have just learned something new!!

With what you will be doing, how much further do you have to go until everything comes together?

Mike- No worries my friend!  That's what I love about this hobby, learning new things good and bad throughout the process.  The sand color over the dark brown gave it a reddish tint, close to fresh rust.  I'll get some pics later today when the camera batteries are charged up. Thumbs Up [tup]

As for how much further- have to finish weathering the roadwheels, then the tracks.  After that, they can be installed so I can then add the side panels which will round out most of the hull build.  A little more on the turret before I can paint it. Thumbs Up [tup]

Have been working on the Abrams here and there all week, and managed to get the roadwheels painted with their base color, as well as a wash or two.  I also painted the tracks a basic dark brown as an undercoat, will finish them later.

I used some dark brown on a piece of sponge to add some scratches and wear on the sprocket teeth.  From most of the photos I have studied, the sprockets are in remarkably good condition with only a small amount of wear on the edges.  A testament to our troops, keeping them in such excellent condition!

I also attached the side panels after adding a few home-made additions.  The "step" hanging down near the front is replicated in the kit by an oddly shaped piece of plastic.  I cut these off, and replaced them with a section of multi-strand wire, twisted to look like the cables used on the 1/1 scale.  I left a small section of insulation on each end as the cable attaches to a round section welded to the bottom of the panels.

You can see the original kit part on the bottom side, and the new one on top.  Much better!  Ialso cut off the squarinsh blob on the top front of the side panels, as this part is really a rectangular tube to facilitate lifting the panel for removal/service.  I replaced it with a piece of brass sheet folded up into a rectangle.

Well, she's really starting to look like an Abrams now! Big Smile

Thanks for looking! [8-]

Thank you very much Tom, I appreciate that!  This build has been a lot of fun- researching something you know very little about is a great way to break out of a rut.  Glad you're enjoying the photos! Big Smile [:D]

Hi Frank,

She's coming along very nicely - the "off" colour roadwheel is a nice touch. I see you even added the fender springs - your usual attention to detail is paying off in a big way.

You're almost home, keep it up... Big Smile [:D]

And then it happened! While on maneuvers Frank's M-1 was involved in a fording operation when the tank comander realized that it had been glued together with Wisconsin Cheese-wiz and water soluable glue. The first leak was soon followed by many others, The bilge pumps could not keep up! Then came the mice. Wasn't pretty.

This is a True story during an excercise in Hoenfels Germany( If I spelled it close) An M-1 tried to follow an APC across a frozen pond. Long story short is the Brigade Commander was asking who was in command of the Submarine!  All you could see was the antenna above water. No injuries except to pride of course.

Frank it looks mighty fine.  The road wheels look good enough to have a new 2nd Lt check the air pressure then the shocks! Laugh [(-D]

Thanks Phil!  I am really having a great time finding new details to add while scouring references. Big Smile [:D]

Mac- Shock [:O]  WHO TOLD YOU ABOUT THAT?!?!?!  We were trying to keep that incident a secret.  Oh, well... the cat's outta the bag now. Sigh [sigh]  Thanks for looking in!

nice,I just want to make sure that the real color is light sand, and the tamiya desert sand is too dark.May be a little mix of white and desert sand,I think

@Testor light sand is also a good choice

Thank you for the paint info.  I used Tamiya Buff as a base color for the wheels, as I wanted them a bit darker being on the bottom and in shadow.  I plan to use a few shades of this color for the for the main body.  Thanks again! Thumbs Up [tup]

that submerged story reminds me of one in iraq where they were trying to cross a ditch or something and the tank was too heavy and slowly submerged on an angle up and i think over the commanders copula (sp?). they got it out eventually but the guys in the unit being the "funny" guys they are, someone took a marker and drew a line across the mid section of the turrent with the words "do not fill above this line". Laugh [(-D] i dont know...i thought it was funny!

Hey Frank,

Wow.. I really like how your road wheels turned out especially the first one that is "off" colour.. Mmm would this be a replacement roadwheel by chance?

It will definitley be interesting to see how you use the Tamiya Buff on the main fuselage  I mean the hull as well.. Here's a thought, how bout maybe a few shades of various yellows.. RLM 04, XF-50(dessert yellow)(testing these of course.. lol)

The subtle wash on the wheels is a great touch and your right, these machines are kept in really good condition...

Adding such details is what brings the build alive... Your build is making me get the itch to do my DML Abrams... There you go again, you kno how to sucker me into things...

 Looking forward to the WIPs..

Flaps up,

Mike

Mike- I think you are on to something there with the multiple shades.  I was at my LHS the other day picking up one of every Tamiya color similar to Buff.  Great minds think alike. Wink [;)]

Haha great minds do think alike..Wink [;)] See I am always thinking, pass my ideas onto you and if I like the results, then I'll use it myself.. Ya kno, it's like cutting out the middle man.. Lol jk Tongue [:P] Ah very cool, really curious to see what you come up with my friend!!

To bad Floquil is still not around.. I have a few jars of their US Desert Storm Sand that I used on my Humvee and I loved it... For what ever reason, this particular Hummer does not like it's pix to be taken this early.. lol The shades are better in person..

Butz, what hummvee set did you use for that? I've been looking for one with a motorcycle like that for a LONG time.  Did you just add it or did it come with the kit?

Hey Alex,
I used the Tamiya Humvee.. I believe the M1025.. I scratch built the motorcycle rack, as well as a few other items..
The dirt bike is from the Tamiya JSDF set with a few mods...

Camo,
Hopefully Frank see this becasue this paint is awesome and to me IMHO, is the best desert sand colour. If you do not mind, I may ask for a bottle or two..

Okay, thanks Burtz.  I was just wondering cause I've seen a few models with the same configuration and motorcycle holder, so I was just wondering if there was a kit. Thanks for the name of the motorcycle, I've been looking for that with little luck Sigh [sigh]...

... and your build is coming along greatly Daywalker! I think that the shading with the tamiya color will be great.

No worries gents, feel free to post here. Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike- Excellent work on that Humvee, I had toyed with the idea of parking on of those next to the Abrams on a base when finished.  But, now that I have an M978 I won on Ebay, think I'll park that next to it instead! Big Smile [:D]

As for the paint, Tom- I really appreciate the offer!  I think I'll stick with the Tamiya stuff as I am used to working with it.  Please feel free to offer it to these guys. Wink [;)]

Thanks again Tom, that was a very generous offer.  Maybe with all of this Floquil Armor Sand paint flying around, we'll get to see more modern armor build threads! Big Smile [:D]

I can hope, right?
