1:72 TOPAS (Polish BTR-50 mod)
Posted by Pawel on Monday, December 26, 2011 1:36 PM

Hello everybody!

TOPAS is a variant of the Russian BTR-50 developed in Czechoslovakia by adding a turbocharged engine and side doors of the troop compartment, among others. There are many external differences. Polish army further modified the vehicle, by adding an anti-aircraft MG in a turret. This specific variant is called TOPAS-2AP. That's what I'm going to model. The whole thing started, when I got 50% discount on a resin kit by a company called ARMO. The kit laid on the shelf too long and was getting pretty shaken up, having survived about two moves of the store and was handled by the undecided customers for too many times. Because of that many parts were in a sad shape.

The tracks were worst:

NormallyI don't have problems with resin tracks - I even like 'em. But those were getting "extra crunchy" so I started thinking about a replacement. That's how I found a plastic kit of the BTR-50, by a Belarussian company called PST:

Now maybe they don't have democracy there, but they poduce decent plastic models. The tracks may not be the prettiest thing I've seen, but at least something's there:

And the other side - the worse:

Additional surprise - they included markings for the polish vehicle, wich I'm going to use - there are no decals in the ARMO kit, and the Polish markings arenot mentioned in the PST instructions:

The styrene road wheels are also better than the resin ones:

The resin hull also took some damage due to excesive handling:

Now if you compare the detail on the injection molded and the resin hulls - on the bottom side:

The very nice injection-molded underside gave me the idea of "transplanting" it on the resin hul top, which sports a lot of features unique to this characteristic Polish variant. To do that I had to cut off a large chunk of the resin hull. Lot of work, and it had to be done "wet", so as not to release lots of harmful resin dust. After that I puttied and sanded the hull. For puttying I took a two-component epoxy called "Poxipol":

So that's what I have for now. I'd be grateful for advice and comments. Thanks for reading, and have a nice day

Hello!

As it sems, the transplantation went allright! :D Here's what it looks like now:

As you can se, I also glued on the broken-off fenders. Now I'm going to putty and smooth the hull and install the fittings on one hand, on the other one I'll do the chasis and the tracks (still not so sure about them...). Thanks for reading, have a nice day

Nice work so far, Pawel. I think it'll be easier to build if you move up to 1:35 and get Trumpeter's BTR-40 and modify it into Polish BTR-50. Mine is being built at the moment by my main modeler.

Model Maniac - thanks for your comment. I won't be movin' to 1:35 though - at least not with this machine. And please be careful with the designtions - BTR-40 isn't even closely related to this baby. Only the BTR-50 was a tracked personnel carrier - all other BTRs were wheeled vehicles.

Anyhow, I'm still thinking about yet another set of tracks - there's this company called OKB Grigorov (great name for 1:72 AFV modellers), maybe they would have something for me. In the meantime I went on to tackle some details on the top hull - I made some grabhandles out of copper wire, glued on the fuel tanks and the smoke charges, and made the gear basket out of stretched sprue. Also please note how nice the PST wheels look (they are only temporarily put in place). Here's how the model looks now:

Wow Pawel, that's some nice surgery/transplant work in 1/72. The patient looks like its on its way to a full recovery. Yes

Nice work Pawel, I can't wait to see the completed project.

What's your opinion on the PST kits? Some I like and think are good, others don't seem like they are worth the glue it takes to assemble.

Pawel does some nice work.

Personally,I love PST kits. They may need a little TLC,but the end result is usually worth it.

Gentleman, thanks a lot for your comments. I already started losing hope anyone is reading this!

Bill - yeah, he seems all right now! I try to take good care of him.

Mike - Thanks a lot! There will be more, as soon as I put my hands on some PE tracks!

Rob - Thanks a lot! I didn't see too many PST kits yet. This one PT-76/BTR-50 is a little uneven - very nice details on the hull and many delicate castings, like the tow rope hooks (I didn't put them on yet), on the other hand you have the tracks - not too bad but definitely not comparable to the rest of the kit. Don't know about USA, but here in Poland you can get this one for a very good price (9 USD), so that kinda compensates for it.

TD4438 - Thanks for your kind words! I agree, at least on this one - this BTR50 could certainly be built into a very nice model.

Johan - Yeah, I'm a joker Big Smile Thanks a lot for the compliments. I'll try to keep them unusual subjects comin'!

Thank you all for the comments again, best greetings and have a nice day

You have the heart of a viking and the hands of a surgeon! Much braver than I--I never would have even attempted to rescue that disaster of a resin kit there.Great job so far!

Still, it will be a voyeuristic thrill to see you pull this one out!

PST kits were quite cheap here in the US when Alanger.us was the vendor, but then they had some issues like taking orders and not shipping, sending wrong stuff, etc. and PST kind of became scarce.

They also were the importer for Ace kits so I haven't seen those around in any great quantity either.

Karl - you sure have a fancy way to say things - thanks a lot for your kind words!

K-dawg - also many thanks!

Rob - I understand - they used to be easier to get around here too, now it got worse, but they are still possible to get, so if I could help you getting them, just let me know.

Thanks a lot for your comments, have a nice day

Thanks for the offer, but I have enough PST and Ace kits to last a while. If they release something that I have to have but can't get myself, I'll let you know.

Hello again!

So over a year have passed and I couldn't get any PE tracks - so I designed my own. Got them a few days ago and now one track is assembled. Here's what it looks like:

How do you like it? I'm so glad I can move on with the project now. Thanks for reading and have a nice day

Hi Pawel,

Since I have been following your entries for some time I know you are not joking.

How many etched parts for one track element?
Looks as if you have made a balance between segment and individual?

How difficult / easy would it be for you to create a master?

Thank you for sharing!

Very Best Regards

Johan

Hello Johan!

Did my post sound like joke to you at first? Maybe I have to reconsider something next time when I write?

Basically I constructed long segments of track links, and every such segment consists of two parts - the proper track and the strip with two rows of guide teeth on it. When designing I wasn't surehow this thing is going to behave, so for now I used six tracks segments. If I was to do it again, I would reduce this number to four, or maybe even two. For now what you see assembled in the picture is like 20 parts - with the segments with most severe bends around the wheels having separate outer links. After redesign I could probably bring this number closer to 12.

What do you mean by master? Do you want to cast it in resin? I'd say PM me and maybe I could get you a set of those tracks - if you're working on a PT-76 family member in 1:72.

Thanks a lot for your comment and have a nice day

Hi Pawel,

It is 100% the opposite, there is only respect!

I wanted to point out how serious you are about getting accuracy right.

Your work is an inspiration to me!

Very Best Regards

Johan
